Never in doubt. As one sided a 1-0 win as you'll ever see.

-
Farckin ell! What a team.
-
Think we ought to give this Emery chap until the end of the season you know. He's alright.
-
Superb, truly superb. All brilliant, but Bailey was absolutely magnificent.
-
The best football I've seen from a Villa team in 50 years
-
Nice routine home win there.
-
Fuck my tablets. I’m getting pissed
-
What a game!
That's the Baily I was expecting when we signed him!
-
We Man Citied Man City.
-
That was a 1-0 hammering. We played 'em off the park.
As much as anything else, the control, touch and spatial awareness of our team is light years ahead of anything I've seen in our team for years, if ever.
-
Get the fuck in! Well-deserved. Great game.
-
3rd, time to believe
-
I'm 28 so I can quite comfortably say that's the best 90 mins from Villa I have ever seen.
No words.
Give Unai the statue.
-
That's a brilliant win. Well done Villa and SUE.
What a performance. Now third in the league.
-
I love you Villa, oh yes I do😃😃😃
-
FORTRESS VILLA PARK!!! This felt like that 7-2 win against then-Champions Liverpool a few years back, minus the extra goals. What a freaking performance!!
-
That's what great teams do. They find a way to win.
-
I bet it's a long long time since anyone battered Man City like that. They may have had heavier defeats but that was a one sided smashing. 22-2 in shots, they had 0 corners.
-
Anyone else shaking? 🤣
-
Good win
-
I'm 28 so I can quite comfortably say that's the best 90 mins from Villa I have ever seen.
No words.
Give Unai the statue.
You’re a baby mate but you and all of us deserve this.
-
Ten wins already and it’s only the first week of December. The man’s a genius.
-
Prior to tonight the best I've seen us play was against Burnley a few seasons ago, where we were just relentless and had about 70% possession and 26 shots, but this. This was a different class to everything I've seen Villa do before. Fuck me.
-
I can cope with everything life throws at me when Villa play like this.
-
Best I've ever seen us play. Incredible, mcginn was the best player in the world there
-
As i csnt afford to get to vp im glad i have amazon. Best ive ever seen villa in many a year. Bailey what a player. Im very emotional as to how my villa are after yeats of shite. Im bit pissed but so happy tonight so so happy. I needed this today
-
Never doubted them*
*After the first ten minutes.
-
I’m a lurker here really, but have got to post to say that I can’t remember a better performance than that in 40 years as a fan
-
How good was that!
-
Marvellous.
-
I'm 28 so I can quite comfortably say that's the best 90 mins from Villa I have ever seen.
No words.
Give Unai the statue.
I'm 40 and I can safely say the same
-
One team looked like League title contenders, who toy with other teams and have their way and the other looked like a plucky upstart hoping to finish in the top 6.
-
Eddie Large...the Gallagher twats...
-
Unbelievable, I'm not going to be able to get to sleep for ages now
-
10 out of 10, every single one of them. Fantastic win. 3rd place.
-
Sensational.
-
Anyone else shaking? 🤣
Yep, I'm working from home and now have the shakes. How good does this feel.
-
In disbelief at how we completely battered the reigning PL and European champions. To a man we were magnificent tonight. Couldn't give anyone less than a 10/10 tonight. 3 or 4 nil would have been more of an accurate reflection of the game.
I think thats the best I've ever seen us play. Genuinely
-
We beat the absolute SHIT out of them. We fucked them up all over the pitch. Unai, the selection was incredible, the tactics were masterly, the game management spot on.
Special mentions (I mean, everyone, but especially special):
Emi, the best keeper in the world;
Pau Torres, his best game for us;
Kamara, looked like an emperor in there;
Tielemans, a revelation recently;
Leon. Actual. Bailey. Just wow. The best performance by a 10/wide attacker/whatever in a Villa shirt in absolutely ages. The best since Grealish left. Actually? As good as Grealish on a very, very good day. Totally deserved the touch of luck for the goal, as did the whole team.
We totally did them, good and proper, no complaints and no excuses. We're fucking massive. I love it.
-
As I posted at full time in the match thread, the BBC only have Citeh having 2 chances all match, the two Ludo had in quick succession. We had 20 more then them.
-
I hope that forsest result doesnt bite us on srse. Can we win the league?
-
We are the real deal
-
Superb, so good I wouldn't have been mad if those rats snatched a late equalizer. We were easily the better team tonight.
-
I can't wait to soak up every bit of post match punditry and articles and all that good stuff
-
This is just incredible. It’s like Emery uses mind bending powers on his players. Bailey has been transformed into the most exciting skill full player we’ve had since you know who but with more end product, Konsa looks like the best defender in the world. McGinn and Luiz are probably the leagues best midfielders.
-
I remember a few years ago, someone said if we were to play night games all the time, we'd win the League all the time. They might be onto something.
-
Unbelievable, I'm not going to be able to get to sleep for ages now
Me too. Got to be up at 6am too. Sweet dreams though, when we finally get to sleep!
-
Can't wait to watch this back later.
-
Still in shock we had a half decent referee
-
I'm 28 so I can quite comfortably say that's the best 90 mins from Villa I have ever seen.
No words.
Give Unai the statue.
I'm 40 and I can safely say the same
I'm 60, and just listening on WM was breathtaking!
-
I hope that forsest result doesnt bite us on srse. Can we win the league?
Yes. I fear absolutely nobody and haven't since about March
-
We are so much better without Matty Cash.
-
Best not get carried away
We probably need another 5 points to be safe from relegation
-
We are so much better without Matty Cash.
Harsh on Cash but I will say that back four tonight absolutely DOMINATED Haaland, Foden etc
-
I'm 28 so I can quite comfortably say that's the best 90 mins from Villa I have ever seen.

Give Unai the statue.
I'm 40 and I can safely say the same
I'm 53 and that performance is up there with the best, considering the opposition. 12/10 every player.
-
Unbelievable performance. Didn't fancy our starting team at all but very much proven wrong. Bailey coming of age tonight, credit to Emery for sticking with him. McGinn was unreal, Luiz, Torres outstanding. So many stars really. Leon Osman said it on commentary too regarding the quality of our subs compared to theirs.
-
I'm 28 so I can quite comfortably say that's the best 90 mins from Villa I have ever seen.
No words.
Give Unai the statue.
I'm 40 and I can safely say the same
Same here brother. Absolutely incredible. Blown away. Crying!
-
Simply fantastic. We really are a great team to watch. Surely City have never been battered like that over 90 mins in the current State Owned era. My only slight downer was missing my first home game in years with a bad chest infection. Watching that has certainly helped me feel better. Can we begin to dream?
-
Immense performance. It wasn't down to City having an off day either, it was down to how great we were. I can't remember a performance as good in years, and we have had some fantastic performances under Unai.
Everyone was superb. The midfield bossed it. Tielemens had his best game. Some of his flicks and touches were utter filth. Konsa was majestic, Carlos and Pau were fantastic and Digne had a great game.
But Leon fucking Bailey. He's fast becoming my favourite player. He's a really likeable guy and it felt like he might have been done at Villa but his resurrection this season has been astonishing.
How often does a player have a couple of indifferent seasons and suddenly have such a turnaround? It rarely happens but Bailey has really stepped it up. Importantly he's managed to stay fit, which has been a big help. Unai wasn't overly enamoured with him last season. Probably on the fence and had Buendia not had that injury we might have let Bailey go for a half-decent offer. Leon's really turned his career around. Love it.
-
52 and it's like the early 80s all over again only I can enjoy and understand it more. Sensational.
-
Emi 10
Konsa 10
Carlos 10
Torres 10
Digne 10
Douglas 10
Kamara 10
McGinn 10.5
Tielemans 10
Watkins 10
Bailey 11
Subs 10
Emery 11
That’s all.
-
I am really liking Pau Torres. Classy player. SJM was superb tonight. Every blade of grass covered by him. Kamara and Douglas were dominant too. What a result. Schooled!
Clean sheet too. Yay!!!
-
Oh and since they get loads of stick I thought the officials were very good tonight.
-
Fabulous.Easily the best performance for many years. Onwards and upwards.
-
Tears here…of the happy variety.
-
40. This is my 95 96 season again
-
Anyone else shaking? 🤣
Yes!!
-
Kamara was incredibly good tonight.
-
Difficult December, was it called?
-
Still in shock we had a half decent referee
He had a really good game.
-
Brilliant performance, to absolutely batter Man City and fantastic performances from McGiin and Bailey has made my week.
-
I feel emotional.
-
You know we looked good when even sha fans are saying we looked good, even if it is killing them.
-
Fuck you, you bald fraud.
-
A performance that had it all, relentless work ethic from the whole team. No one afraid to receive the ball or play to our usual strengths, no one hid.
Clean sheet, goal, great crowd and atmosphere.
The ref had a good game, VAR not needed, and Unais subs were spot on.
These nights don’t come often but when they do, fuck me they are priceless
Up Unai Emery’s Aston Villa
-
Pep being very gracious. Fair play to him.

'Bailey goal gives Villa deserved win over out-of-form Man City'

-
*sob* I didn't see it! *sob*
Did the performance eclipse the 5-1 against Liverpool in '76?
I even got a text about it from my sister saying what everyone is saying in that her husband has never seen a Villa side play better.
Fantastic Villa!
-
We are so much better without Matty Cash.
Nah, we're better when Unai gets the team right for the game at hand. Sometimes it's Matty, sometimes it ain't. We've got a squad of heroes and a manager of genius.
-

Fixed it mate. Much closer to the truth.
-
I hope that forsest result doesnt bite us on srse. Can we win the league?
Honestly, truly, no I don't think so, not quite. Can we get a CL place? No doubt about it
-
The best performance we’ve put in like, forever. Absolutely brilliant.
-
Played possibly the best team in Europe off the park, sensational performance Villa, Leon MOTM brilliant effort, bring on the Arsenal.
UP THE VILLA
-
Yeah the ref was good, didn't notice him for the vast majority.
-

I'm 73 (this week) and can't wait to see a re-run as was out playing badminton! A wonderful early b'day pressie :-)
-
Pep being very gracious. Fair play to him.
Yep, he was just so honest about how much better we were than them.
-
This is the best Villa side I have ever seen. Too young to understand it in 81 & 82 and we’ve had a few decent sides since, but not as good as this team. They are all outstanding and the way we play is brave, controlled and exciting.
-
League? No. But these things happen with momentum. Leicester's title, you were just waiting for it all to collapse, and it never did.
-
Everybody - 10/10
Actually, Kamara, 100/10, SJM, a gazillion/10
-
I’m too young to remember the 5-1 vs Liverpool from the 70s, how does this compare? Best performance in living memory? Better than the 7-2?
-
That was beautiful!

The best performance we’ve put in like, forever. Absolutely brilliant.
It was superb, for the most part we controlled the game. The difference Kamara made tonight was massive.
-
Just wow...what a team.....
-
I feel a bit emotional after that. I would say that's the best I have ever seen a Villa team play.
Everyone was immense - but, personally, I have to say:
Bailey was amazing - I didn't think in a million years he had a performance like that in him - he was brilliant - like peak Grealish and then some.
The back four were all imperious. But well done Carlos - who I haven't rated til now - but his physicality against Haaland was impressive and him and Pau looked so comfortable all game.
Tielemans - was brilliant, as he has been for a few games now. McGinn also - absolute captain's performance. Emi too - showing why hes the best in the world.
And of course - big thanks to Unai - for making all this possible. What a time to be a Villa fan
-
Everyone played great. Special word for the skipper, at times it was like the ball was glued to his foot.
-
Doubt we can win the league because we have too many Forest/Bournemouth results, but can we make the Champions League? I think we can... but it is only December, so trying not to get too far ahead of myself here.

yes - was such a relief to have one that didn't make it about them.

I was worried about Haaland v Torres, but apart from the early chance the gargoyle on steroids didn’t have a sniff.
-
fuck my old boots. What a game. We played the fuckers off the park!
-
To a man, we were untouchable tonight. We have been waiting a very long time for these nights to return to VP. The crowd were immense.
Onwards and upwards. Arteta won't be sleeping well tonight.
-
I am 67 and my memories are probably tinted by time, those years in the 70,s
When we beat 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' 5-1 it was 5.0 at half time
Tonight was the most complete performance i can recall, they had a bit of possession after half time but we hunted them down and pushed forward.
On that showing we will beat anyone.
Anything is possible

Hope you have a lovely birthday. The fact that you are 18 1/2 years older than me and still able to take part in active sports is making me take a long hard look at myself...
-
I decided to look at a few other forums.
sha, hating it but saying how good we are
Ditto Wolves
Ditto Blue Moon
Ditto Newcastle
Ditto RAWK
Ditto Red Cafe, with a number of threads about us.
-
I was worried about Haaland v Torres, but apart from the early chance the gargoyle on steroids didn’t have a sniff.
Torres was magnificent, as were all of the back 4. Basically every player was brilliant.
-
West Midlands 2 - 0 Man City
-
Been going for 57 years, that performance was as good as anything.
Odds now cut to 22/1 to win the title. Just saying.
-
Emery till I die.
-
Thanks to Unai, Wes and Nassef, we are a really good side. Great time to be a Villa fan. Pride is back.
-
Our self belief when we are on the ball is astounding. The very definition of oozing with confidence. We were amazing
-
Are we mathematically safe from relegation yet?
-
Are we mathematically safe from relegation yet?
Nearly. We need to play for a few draws along the way.
-
Are we mathematically safe from relegation yet?
Nope we’re only 15 places from relegation
-
Vamos Villa!
Absolutely beautiful performance!
Dominated the match and Emery is my hero!
Well played Bailey!
Well played Villa.
An utter joy!

That’s all.
This pretty much sums it up for me. I have a hard time thinking of anyone that didn't play superbly tonight. Emi had two world-class saves and then got the rest the night off. Backline was immense as Haaland was invisible most the night. 2 shots for City all night and 22 for us, that's incredible! Our midfield felt like it won every tackle and dribbled their way out of every tight situation. Bailey looked like a threat every time he touched the ball, easily his best game for us.
-

Apparently, best start to a league season since 80/81. More food for thought.
-
Speechless at our performance. Fucking hell.
-
What a gentleman Emery is, love him. The perfect fit for us as well.
-
I can't think of a better performance. A magical night. I love this team and I love Emery.
-
Villa first on MOTD with only a 1-0. Fix.
-
The perfect performance.

Rubs eyes in disbelief. This team I'm watching is actually my team.

The 22 shots Villa fired at Ederson's goal are the most Pep Guardiola has seen his side face since taking over at City, whose meagre two efforts in total was a fair reflection of the hosts' superiority.

Also loved the stat that those two shots for City were the fewest a Pep side has ever created in over 500 games.

Brilliant isn't it !!
Man City attempted just two shots in the match the fewest ever by a Pep Guardiola team in a game within Europe’s big-five leagues, while the 22 shots from Aston Villa was the joint-most faced by a Guardiola side in the same period (tonight his 535th such game)
-
Best Villa home performance since Sir Brian's Lions twatted red noses Manure at the start of 1995-96 season 👍
-
Outstanding performance. Of the gazillions of improvements under Emery perhaps the biggest (it struck me tonight) is just how unbelievably comfortable and confident the whole team is (including all the defenders) with the ball, always happy to receive it in tight situations.
Shout out for Diego as well. He's done okay considering the serious injury but I have had some nagging doubts about him. Thought he did great tonight.
I'm 45 and this team has now equalled (probably overtaken) BFR's 92/93 team as my favourite (loved 95/96 too).

Nah, we're better when Unai gets the team right for the game at hand. Sometimes it's Matty, sometimes it ain't. We've got a squad of heroes and a manager of genius.
Agreed. Cash improved is when he came on against Bournemouth on Sunday.
-
The stats say we’ve torn them a new one which just confirms what my eyes saw. Love this team, love this manager BIG!!
-
The Amazon Prime post match interviews are painful to watch.
Turned it off immediately and flocked to other clubs' forums to absorb every last ounce of misery/reluctant praise (delete as applicable) available. A beautiful night. My beautiful Villa.
-
That was absolutely the best performance I’ve seen in the modern era. Every player was outstanding, the football we’re playing is arguably the best I’ve seen in my 61years. Just outstanding

Wow...you expect for that one bad minute to just ruin every thing as it always does for Villa.
VAR, the one bad pass i defense, an unreal deflection or a standard referee coinflip call.... but it didnt happen.
It was just a perfect game, I wouldn't change a single Villa player who touched grass this evening.
Strangely I feel a little sad...or maybe afraid that we never going to see a performance like that again.
22-2 in attempts...against fcking Man City. And those 2 attempts from Haaland....point blank on goal felt was just there to let Emi Martinez humble that Beast.
How do you wind down after this so you manage to fall asleep?

I won't do quotes from everywhere, but I liked this one from RAWK
When did the Villa players start using methamphetamine??
What the fuck did I just watch? They looked like peak Liverpool throughout that. City were shite but that was bizarre, Villa were ridiculous!

Clean sheet too.

I've never seen a team work so hard. They must all be absolutely knackered after that.
I love every one of em.

Wasn't even nervy towards the end, you just knew we'd see it out, it's what we do now. Fucking glorious, roll on Saturday.
-
I thought that Emery picked the wrong team and was late making subs. But he seems to always know exactly what we need.
-
It’s been said before but echoes of 89-90 when we beat Man Ure Boxing Day and Arsenal a few days later, great days.
Tarquins should be shitting it.
-
What a game, what a team. It was weird, it was the first game in years that both by buttocks weren't fused together for the last ten minutes. We are back! Proper manager. Great club. It's a very long time since we've had a good man at the helm.

Loved Emi as he walked down the tunnel at the end: "At last a clean sheet!"
-
Absolutely superb and I bet we see a different line up against Arsenal. Unai is exceptional.
The Ref also deserves a special mention, no bias and no contentious decisions - including the time added on.

Statement win. Absolutely blew them away . Get the fuck in.

Eddie Large...the Gallagher twats...
Bernard Manning...
About 600 million students at my university...young people here love Man City. ******
For now they do….
I will put them through turmoil today.
They'll have to redefine the meaning of power harassment in Japan 😂
-
I said on here a week or so ago that I fancied us against these but I wasn't expecting it to be as comfortable as that. Everyone was really good. Can't pick a bad player.

Thinking about the starting lineup and something worth noting is that Konsa had played the most minutes in the league out of the whole squad. He's also played in every European game (not full games) bar AZ away, and he played in the League Cup game.
So there's a possibility the juggling with Cash/Carlos is to give Carlos/Torres time to gel together because at some point Konsa will need a break too. Cash is getting a rest at the moment and possibly we'll see him come back in and Konsa sit one or two out.
Obviously there's a horses for courses element to it too.

So wired. Realised I'm not going to sleep until well into tonight, so have some Carlsberg Export on the bedside table as the missus sleeps. PAR-TAY.

Nice to see Buendia getting in on the celebrations.

Wow, just brilliant Villa.

Can't wait to watch this back later.
Last on MOTD probably

I'm surprised Diaby can run that fast with that handicap.
Also, no Emery as he is already watching Arsenal games ready for Saturday.

When those ****** cheated their way to the Champions League last season, a few students turned up on the Monday in their Man City shirts.
I put on a really serious face and tone, and politely explained that they wouldn't be allowed into the classroom wearing that kind of garment.
Beyond petty, but there we go.
-
Amazing performance and the best I have seen in many years, especially given the opponents.
If it had been 3 or 4 it wouldn't have flattered us.
I thought everyone played exceptionally well, but Konsa and McGinn were brilliant and I didn't think Bailey had it in him to play so well all game.
-
What a fucking team we have become, in just a year and a bit, amazing stuff.
-
If Unai can just weave his Baileyspell on Zaniolo ... ...
Zaniolo has a higher ceiling, based on previous.
-
Just back. Reminds me of 1980-81. That's all.
-

I would agree... and it's taken until the start of this season for Bailey to come good under Unai, so not prepared to cut the loan short in Jan like some are calling for!
-

Can hardly believe what we've just all seen! Best I can remember - and I'm 67! I honestly didn't think we would be able to keep going like that all match. Incredible! UTV
-
Any confidence I had completely collapsed around 4pm, no idea why but at almost every turn this Manager makes a fool out of me. I didn't fancy Konsa at RB even without their winger but Ezri was peerless. These are extraordinary times driven by an extraordinary manager.
I predicted 1-0 but imagined that it might be backs to the wall but Unai said bollocks to that.
And as Saturday approaches, any thoughts of a shit cart after the Lord Mayor's Show will be firmly dismissed. This is different, very different.
-
In Australia and was woken up by Jane at 06:30 yelling that we had beat them, and beat them well. Great alarm call!
Some ghosts laid to rest with this result.
-
Magnificent performance. Leon Bailey was outstanding! Now for the Gunners.....I predict 3-1 to Villa!
-
Not long got back from being at Villa Park. What a night and performance. It wasn’t a fluke win either as we were the better side for significant periods of the game. A number of players had arguably their best game in a Villa shirt tonight
Watching from the North Stand, it was clear that we had done our homework and were quite happy to let Kyle Walker have the ball in their half, but really pressed the other three defenders and it really worked.
-
What a game!
That's the Baily I was expecting when we signed him!
I was excited, but I didn’t think he’d be THAT good.

Not at all. If I'd had kids, I would've disowned the buggers if they'd brought shame on the family like that!

Had a really shitty cold for the last few days.
Tonight's performance and result is just what the doctor ordered.
But I'm supplementing it with a large brandy to help the recovery.

Said pre game it kind of had a big game feel like Ipswich H in 1981 . Keep this up and every game is going to be huge .
-
Just back….. Wow just wow.
I’m starting to believe we are going places again.
Fabulous football and every player was superb as was the atmosphere. The turnaround in Bailey this season is remarkable, he constantly wants the ball and his work rate and attitude is fantastic now.
Absolutely played them off the park and could have been 3.
Same starting 11 for Arsenal please.
-
Nice to see Buendia getting in on the celebrations.
Although not balancing on the edge of the seat stretching like that.......
Would be a very Villa injury setback to fall off a seat in the changing room of a game you weren't playing in.
-
When was the last time we played that well? Genuinely can’t recall it.
Just fantastic.
-
Just a dream this.
We've been many top tier sides over the years. Usually through counter attacks and clinging on at the end.
When have we ever won with such supreme control like that? Bar 5-10 minutes after half time it never felt like we were in any danger whatsoever.
We're a CL club in waiting, we just have to keep believing it and produce it on the pitch as that was a 11/10 performance easily from everyone and the manager of course.
Superb!
-
Just got in from the game.
Didn't think we'd top the Spurs result so quickly... :D :D :D
So pleased for Emi on getting his clean sheet again after so long! Chuffed for Leon Bailey too after his frustrations against Legia last week!
-
That wasn’t just good, it was elite. You will not see that Citeh team often, if ever, utterly overwhelmed in a game like that - we were swarming them and if anything 1-0 flatters them.
The most shots Citeh have faced in a game since Guardiola took over.
Absolute Unai Emery masterclass. Again.
-
He's no Steven Gerrard.

Would you bet against us ?
Up the fucking Villa.
Incredible.

We were fabulous against Newcastle last season, which was the best I’d seen for many years. This was off the scale - the intensity, skill and togetherness of this team is just remarkable. It feels like they will run through a brick wall for Emery. Ron Saunders had the same effect on players - just saying.
-
I’m 67 and first went with my Dad in 1966, for me this was the most complete performance since the 5-1 home win over Liverpool in 1976, everyone else a 9 out of 10 but Bailey a 10, what a night, thank you Unai.
-
Great result, shame about the dressing room photo. Need to back it up with a win under the lights on Saturday evening.
-
And no Eric Gates to spoil the evening
-
I had us down to win in my acca but, as soon as I saw the line up, I thought it was as good a time as any for Unai to start looking for a new employer. What the fcuk do I know as the Master came up trumps yet again. In view of that performance, I’m going to write to the board and plead that the manager should be given at least 2 more games to see if he can cut it as a Premier League manager!! Arsenal certainly didn’t think so.
-

Yeah all a bit Saudi Geordie that , oh well
-
Just a superb performance from the Villa.
Top 4 contenders without question.
-
Don't usually post on the match threads as everything usually gets said but I have to say that, considering the opposition, for us to maintain that level of performance for the whole game was staggering. We looked much fitter, stronger and quicker than them. Absolutely up there with the Liverpool 5-1 from the 70's.
-
A faultless performance, which showed that it is unwise to fault Unai's team selection. Konsa at right back was the big surprise. SJM back to his brilliant best. Bailey phenomenal. Luiz/Kamara in complete control. Defence gave them nothing.
The one possible drawback is that we put so much into tonight's game that we will be short against Arsenal.
-
Mind blowing performance, I was in awe for most of the game at what we’ve become.
Special mention for the midfield, McGinn/Luiz/Kamara/Tielemans must be one of the best we’ve ever had. Endless running, combative but also incredibly skillful and composed. And they cost what, £18m between them?
-
My main reason for feeling a little giddy is the hope that that fills the players with the confidence that we can beat anybody.
So let's go out and win the FA Cup.
-
The one possible drawback is that we put so much into tonight's game that we will be short against Arsenal.
Hope not, really want to beat those f*ckers, preferably with a 97th minute winner so that our entire bench can run onto the pitch to celebrate.

Arsenal also had a very tough match yesterday, I know they have an extra day but they will not be looking forward to coming to villa Park on Saturday

Agree, surprised the statue hasn't been started yet , must be waiting for the better weather to get the bronze up

Bloody brilliant.
I let out a Come on you Villa boys from the trinity, but choked as I said it, which made me sound like a young teen who’s balls were dropping right there and then! Tried to ride it out but it got progressively higher pitched, as more and more heads turned wondering where the awful
noise was coming from!
Well worth the embarrassment. Onto that Lego haired, whinging bastard on Saturday!
WHAT A NIGHT! UTV!

If Unai can just weave his Baileyspell on Zaniolo ... ...
Zaniolo has a higher ceiling, based on previous.
We as fans need to be more patient. Especially with young players coming in from other leagues where the standard might not be as high and there is a professional and personal adjustment that needs to happen. That along with coaching that is critical to development. What has transpired with Bailey shows that confidence, belief, application and coaching has turned him into a player that will be so crucial to us this season. The same might apply to Zaniolo who previous to us, was a very promising player with bags of talent. He hasn’t suddenly become shit. The lad has been through a lot already with injuries so he’s a fighter. And then throw in the gambling allegations and a lack of form and confidence he’s probably not feeling great about things. But if Bailey, Tielemans and the rest of the squad under Emery are anything to go by, Zaniolo in time can also be a massive asset for us.
-
It was a sublime performance ( not in the same league as Liverpool 5-1) . I was kid on the Witton End that day, so didn't really appreciate the performance or magnitude of that result or what was to come after.( I do now)
Sorry to be a dour Brummie , but that linesman was a c#nt. Didn't flag any fouls against Villa all game (I was in the Trinity) despite being a few yards away from any discretion , until a Man City player fell over in injury time he started waving it like he had a cattle prod up arse... C*NT

100% agree, some of the negative comments aimed at Zaniolo is naive. Trust this manager, trust the process , not for a second would I question an Emery signing .
-
That was a bit good wasn’t it? Can’t stop grinning!!
To a man, a fantastic performance all round, truly brilliant.
-
Just reading on BBC that this is the first time in 7 years Man City have gone 4 games without a win. Also, they've lost the last 5 games that Rodri hasn't played in.
-
City under Pep , tonight - most shots against , least shots they've had.
It's a total masterclass
-
Unbelievable, I'm not going to be able to get to sleep for ages now
Me too. Got to be up at 6am too. Sweet dreams though, when we finally get to sleep!
Me too. Good job I’m on nights.
-
I got a 9am meeting so I'm ok to stay up to about 4am watching this over again
-
Wow just wow!
We utterly played them off the park.
I’m 54 and that’s the best complete domination of a world class side I’ve ever seen.
We were truly magnificent.
I wasn’t sure about Konsa in that position but he had a blinder.
Bailey ( maybe I / we need a new apology thread for him) was just world class.
We are now title contenders.
-

Still going hard at those Export on the bedside table. Good job I'm off tomorrow 8)

Probably need to have a chat to my neighbours who I know well.
But I was very loud.
-
Tonight was a massive milestone.
-
Remember the opening weekend we'd just lost 1-5 , then Fergie came out and said we were the best team or team that had impressed him the most that weekend . I thought he's pissed or absolutely trolling us.
Looks like one of the greatest managers ever had seen something already
-
Don’t you just love our Villa!!

Staying over night in Brum.
What the f*** is happening.
1 0 flattered them.

Probably need to have a chat to my neighbours who I know well.

Not as loud as the sound of VP was by me.
Means nothing to anyone who doesn't know the area, but I live just down the Beeches side of Walsall Rd, by Tower Hill, maybe two miles from VP, and for the first half I thought it was a huge group of supporters at the Towers pub.
I knew what was them missing a chance, I knew what was us going close, I knew what was us winning a corner, and Leon's goal sent shivers down my spine.
And this is from inside the house, behind double-glazing.
I've never known the noise to carry so well and it was absolutely fucking magnificent.

Typical Villa. Go all those games without a clean sheet and then get it against the treble winners from last season. Piece of piss this.
-
Just got home.
Atmosphere superb
Performance the best since Unai took over
It’s also put to bed the discussion about Konsa on the right - he and the rest of the back 4 were superb.
Who was our number 31 tonight? Hardly recognised him.

Well I'm glad we don't waste it on them anymore. They have their own attempt at a football club.
-
Took an age to get back thanks to the M6. I'm speechless. I think that's one of the most dominant performances, with the context of who we were playing, I've ever seen. Bar 5 minutes after half time, and even then nothing was created, we absolutely battered them.
I've never seen a Pep side under siege in their own box before. That was frighteningly good.
Carlos physically manhandling Haarland was a microcosm for the entire game. Just better, everywhere and by a mile.
Emery is a genius.
-
There's more to come, we're getting better.
-
The same intensity on Saturday against Arsenal and against that clown they have in goal and we can start dreaming a bit of where this season might end up. And oh to stick it in the face of that smarmy prick Arteta too.
-
I am 67 and my memories are probably tinted by time, those years in the 70,s
When we beat 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' 5-1 it was 5.0 at half time
Tonight was the most complete performance i can recall, they had a bit of possession after half time but we hunted them down and pushed forward.
On that showing we will beat anyone.
Anything is possible
5-1 at H/T. No goals second half.
-
Carlos physically manhandling Haarland was a microcosm for the entire game.
I loved seeing Carlos just gently pressuring him on the touchline and seeing Squidward losing his balance and toppling over.
Even though it was a free kick against us, it was brilliant.
'Let them know you're there' as the old defenders' credo goes, doesn't matter who it is.
-

Claret and blue Fred Perry for me at work tonight underneath the standard work gear.

What a fucking team we have become, in just a year and a bit, amazing stuff.
Yes but it's a timely reminder that when we called out a manager over the years, as we did, despite the tide of 'oh he's doing okay', 'give him another window' bollox, we knew along with a few others, he was shite. Tonight I doubted Emery's team selection, it really hadn't worked previously but f**k me, we have a genius on our hands, a genius that I don't believe will be interested in the money any club will want to throw at him. He's in for the long haul.
Earlier today I heard a Man City fan point out that we need to start believing, maybe not winning the league but believing we can can finish top 4 as right then, we were in the top 4 on merit. I hope that even with beautiful Brummie humility we start to realise the standards have changed and so should our ambitions. One step at a time but for me 4th place should be a battle between us and Newcastle. Everybody else is Spursy.
As for tonight, to keep repeating myself but the battle is won in midfield and we have a top 4 midfield. I love every single one of them. The standard has been set, we have a chance to bring in new faces in January, let's build on today rather than think it was the highlight of the season.
That Umai is bloody ambitious. As are our owners. And going my the sound of our fans tonight, so are they. Going under the radar may now be a thing of the past. Deal with it and push on. It's what big teams do. Get used to it.

Beat Arsenal and top 4 can feck off, we're after the title.

Yep. I questioned the line up tonight but Emery is the man.
Seriously great times ahead for us all in the massive Villa family.
-
The best football I've seen from a Villa team in 50 years
I’ll 2nd that. It was a magnificent performance, flawless in fact. Konsa, man of the match I reckon. Baily, the most improved player of the season absolutely excellent too. They were all brilliant. Dare I say it, we’re looking the best villa side ever, my lifetime anyway and that includes the last 50 years. Is that hyperbole? I can’t ever remember us being this good for 90 minutes against such a top side. Maybe the 5-1 v Liverpool late 70’s?
-
Also have to say, I'll give a match rating of 10 to everyone in the stands. They played the part of the 12th man, and it absolutely came through on the broadcast. What an atmosphere! When Bailey scored the goal, you couldn't even hear the commentary. A few moments later after they had a chance to let the crowd noise die down a bit, they were still yelling as loud as they could. Awesome stuff!
-
Doing it to Newcastle last season was one thing, but doing it to Man City?! Absolutely incredible performance from everyone. I thought before the game we’d have to be flawless and aside from Pau putting a ball out for a throw in I can’t remember another mistake in ninety minutes.
Bailey could have had three!

Emery masterclass. Bailey was excellent. # Believe.

I find myself wondering how much of previous games playing Konsa on the right was in preparation for this game (or games like this)

Just started the first few minutes of The Villa Podcast. No-one talks about the Villa like those guys, a podcast worthy of the team.

Well I'm about to head out to play footie with my O40's team (and I'm 56) and I'm here to advise that tonight, even at my age, I will be a massive full-kit wanker and proud of it :)
Claret and blue Fred Perry for me at work tonight underneath the standard work gear.
Do you ever wear anything but, Percy? 🙂
I have many colours, but I’ve never had the feeling this one is lucky. Luckily, there’s no luck in Unai’s armoury.

Probably need to have a chat to my neighbours who I know well.
But I was very loud.
I was gonna ask you about that after your post earlier. Brilliant stuff.
I've lived in this house since I was 2. I spent two years in Lichfield and six in Worcester, but otherwise this has been my home. I have never heard anything like it.
Whether it was just the wind blowing in the perfect direction or not, it was extraordinary. Credit to all the boys and girls there today.

The commentator summed it up at the end when he said referring to Man C "out thought, out fought and out played"
SUE is a genius.
We absolutely battered them, it should have been three or four.
Bring on Arsenal.

I used to go on the lam from my ex round there. Dyas Avenue I think it was. You must know it.

Absolutely brilliant performance I got home at 2am but I don't care it was worth it to witness that performance.

Anyone struggle to get to sleep from the adrenaline after that game?!

I wasn’t even grumpy with the dog getting me up at 5am for a wet and windy walk
-
Anyone struggle to get to sleep from the adrenaline after that game?!
It's been a problem for me since leaving England in 2006, mate. Particularly living in Asia with an 8/9 hour time difference.
If we win, yeah, the adrenaline. If we lose, I'm in a furious mood.
These 8pm ish kick offs aren't so bad, as that's 4/5 ish in Japan, and I have to get up at 5:30 for work anyway.
The 2pm Sunday games are more of a problem as that's 10/11pm here and by the time it's finished, it's gone midnight, and I have busy Mondays.
Still, if we're winning, fuck it, they can do a worksheet and I can drink coffee 😂

Their fans were rubbish last night too, barely a peep from them.

Their fans are always rubbish. Twats

Sensational performance, great atmosphere, a half decent ref, sensible amounts of stoppage time in each half and no VAR interventions. What’s not to like?
-
After all the euphoria of pissing all over the treble winners, even though it’s quite an apparent fact, I’ve just realised we kept a clean sheet! Ha ha!
-
Bailey and McGinn were magnificent. The rest were merely excellent. I have a slight niggle that I just hope we haven't peaked too early but my hangovers tend to make me a bit anxious these days.
-
fantastic performance from the TEAM
Pau's passing from defence into our midfield was sublime, McGinn was so dominant and Bailey's performance was outstanding
Hopefully we can beat Arsenal on Saturday evening
Axl Rose - hopefully you went into work wearing a Villa Top
UTV - and Mr Emery and his staff, thank you so much for bringing our ASTON VILLA BACK!!!
-
Just back. Reminds me of 1980-81. That's all.
For those who can remember 80-81 (I was born during that season), how did last night compare to the 2-0 win v Liverpool that season?

Villa beating Citihad was the top sport story on the infoscreens on Munich's transport network this morning. Nice going to work seeing Leon Bailey celebrating the winner.

After the Beaver Moon, the Blue moon was never gonna cut it.

What a performance. Was trying to think of a better one. Probably not even the Liverpool Semi but that was probably more the occasion.
My only slight downer, did anyone see Diaby race down the tunnel at full time? Doesn’t look overly enamoured in the team photo either. Hopefully my natural pessimism and nothing else. 🤣
-
I was surprised Haaland didn’t play. Was he injured or suspended?
-
I've heard from more non-villa supporting mates since last night than I have after any other Villa game I could remember. Fans of loads of other clubs. It seems there are LOT of people with Amazon Prime. To a man, they've all been incredibly complimentary, with the gist of it being, "Christ, how long have you been playing like that??"
I think any hope we were still running under the radar is now well and truly gone. Can you imagine what it'll be like if we can repeat the feat on Saturday? Personally, I thought two points from these two games would be perfectly acceptable. I now think 4 points would be incredible. 6 points previously unthinkable but now a real possibility.
No one. Literally no one, will fancy playing us at Villa Park now.
-
I was surprised Haaland didn’t play. Was he injured or suspended?
Oh you big wally. He came on and mooched about in defence for abot 5 minutes towards the end. Apparently Guardiola sent them back out after the match to try to get another shot on target, and they're still there this morning.
-
As an aside, is that the set now, ie the only team I can think of that we hadn't beaten since we've been back up?
-
John McGinn showed what a great midfielder looked like last night. He was immense
-
I was surprised Haaland didn’t play. Was he injured or suspended?
I was listening on 5live (too nervous to watch) at one stage and commentator said 'Haaland gets the ball on the edge of the city box and plays it upfield. The problem for City is they needed Haaland on the end of that ball'
Word of beauty to my ears. When does he ever have to that?
-
This was supposed to quote Stu but …..for Stu…
In Australia I think you get an hours highlights of every game the next day so you should get to see a good chunk of it!
-
Just watching MoD just for that move by Bailey as he cuts back and the defender sails by...
Like lots of others a poor night's sleep where I was just waiting for the alarm so I could get up and watch it again.
I was at the 5-1 and that was stunning up until half-time but did not have the intensity throughout as we had won it by then,
Dream...

I’m Feckin hangin and an hour late for work.. still worth the head ache though

Missed the match because of holiday booking,so the brother took his son who has been before but didn't have any interest since about 6 years ago,he loved it and sang song Sweet Caroline with the naughty bit about the blues, I am pleased, the confidence I have in Emery is unbelievable

Walking out of the Holte last night as Hi Ho Silver Lining was playing, I was that discomknockerated by what I had just seen I sang the actual silver lining bit rather than Aston Villa.
What a plum....
-
Wow what a fantastic preformance , just something about VP under lights for big games ..
It must have been loud in there last night as my mrs heard crowd singing sweet caroline at the end all the way up at witton lodge rd !!
Lets bring on the same noise levels saturday against arse ...also under lights 😁
-
Listening to Alan Brazil this morning still couldn't acknowledge how good we were and Manchester missing players, I thought they had two teams too call upon Ipswich twat
-
Guardiola kept going on about our medium-block, and it occurred to me just how hard it is to play that way, to not get sucked into going too high nor dropping back to the 18-yard line. It's such a delicate balance, and it requires such coaching.
-
Wow, what a performance.
Don’t you just love it when entitled t**** get there arse handed to them at Villa park.
-
Just watched the highlights again on MOTD. That really is a proper shoeing.
-
Don't think I'm getting much work done today, or should I reframe that , even less work than usual. Need a coffee
-
Something that struck me this morning, watching some of it back while enjoying my breakfast, is just how well we knock the ball about with genuine confidence. After years of dross, it still gives me kittens sometimes when we're knocking it around at the back and they've got three players pressing hard from the front, yet time and time again yesterday we passed it around them and then found a man in space in the midfield. I've seen us do that to a few 'no-so-good' sides, but this was the first time I've seen us doing it to a team that usually do it to us.
The players look SO confident in how they play. The speed of passing to players who they KNOW will be in a particular space. I'm sure the time will come when I feel "comfortable" watching us play this way out from the back. I'm not there yet, but a few more days like yesterday and it won't be long. Can we have the next one on Saturday?
-
It was the thing I noticed about man city - passing through small spaces, taking the ball under pressure, passing to the keeper in front of the goal. We did it as well as them, if not better?
-
Just watched the highlights again on MOTD. That really is a proper shoeing.
Shame they had to show 8 games so curtailed the highlights. Not that I bothered watching the other 7. To be fair the 2nd string are far less smug than the main line up
-

Yes, we comprehensively out Man Citied Man City.
-
All that performance was missing was more goals.
That should have been a 3 or 4-0 game, the scoreline flattered City.
But if it helps us stay under the radar a bit longer, then so be it, we all know the truth.
I really believe we're on the cusp of something great here with Unai Emery.

Its high risk, high reward. It is risky. I was at Leicester game earlier this year and the execution wasn't right. However we created enough to win 2 games in the first half alone. I was disappointed losing to the East Midlands luddites but not at all disheartened as I usually would be,

Phil McNulty's write up on BBC this morning is a good read. Some highlights..
Seconds before a magnificent victory over Manchester City was confirmed, a roar swept around Aston Villa's famous old stadium. It was the sound of something special stirring under manager Unai Emery.
Emery has produced an outstanding body of work since succeeding Steven Gerrard in October 2022 but this was a masterpiece, the biggest statement he has made since arriving at Villa Park.
The scoreline , a 1-0 Villa victory, is almost laughably misleading when set against the sheer dominance Emery's team exerted over last season's Treble winners, giving him his first triumph over City manager Pep Guardiola at the 14th attempt.
Leon Bailey's winner 16 minutes from time had a touch of fortune, with a crucial deflection off Ruben Dias beating Ederson, but there was nothing lucky about this result. The only injustice was that Villa did not win more convincingly.
Villa hunted down City fearlessly and ruthlessly from the first whistle - then when they caught them, shook them until they rattled. It was a fearsome going over, one the champions have rarely been subjected to in recent years, reflected in the statistic of 22 Villa shots to City's two. That tally did not flatter Villa.

McNulty is happy as it opens the door for Liverpool. Yeah I know he says he is an Everton fan but I have never know a rival fan to write such sycophnatic drivel about their rivals over the last 20 years

A little while ago Tielemans was bemoaning a lack of game time and suggesting joining us was a mistake. Last night some of his work and touches were sublime. I'm sure he's perfectly content now. As always, great management by SUE.

I don't think praise can get any higher than that.

Controversial perhaps but I'd be happy for Liverpool to win it if it can't be us. Man City not launching their annual comeback and being out of contention in latter part of the season, but Arsenal still bottling it would be glorious to watch. Although Liverpool missing out on the title by 2 points, bringing up that Spurs game again, would also be an enjoyable end to the season.
-
If it's not us, I can't be happy for anybody else but Liverpool would be the least worst option. I despise Arteta and don't want him to win anything, ever.

HOW ASTON VILLA MADE MAN CITY
LOOK UTTERLY ORDINARY FOR 90 MINUTES
Fifteen years to the day after Unai Emery first encountered Pep Guardiola, he finally managed to overcome him in the most dominant of ways.
Aston Villa produced a performance for the ages on Wednesday evening and it should be considered their magnum opus since returning to the Premier League in 2019. It was a victory as domineering and deserving as there has been against Manchester City in recent memory. Quite simply: no one does what Villa did to them.
Even though Guardiola’s declaration of Villa as title contenders was premature afterwards, he had just watched his treble winners being completely outplayed and out-hustled.
City barely landed a punch. They registered two shots all game, the fewest ever by a Guardiola side and the joint-most shots faced (22) by an opponent. The second of City’s two shots came in the 11th minute. The 1-0 scoreline was merciful on Guardiola and could not have been more polarising to his first meeting with Emery in 2008, when Barcelona, eventual treble winners, won 4-0 against Valencia.
“Thierry Henry, I remember…” smiled Emery at Tuesday’s press conference, recalling his hat-trick. “You analyse my matches very well. But when I start remembering and thinking about my past, I stop as a coach.”
It served as the beginning of 13 games between the two, nine resulting in Guardiola wins and the other four being draws. In other words, Emery had never beaten Guardiola. Until now.
The tables were turned emphatically on Wednesday evening. Villa Park was caught in a frenzy and furore, testing its old foundations as Emery strode towards the tunnel at the final whistle.
Post-game celebrations after a landmark 50th game in charge were typically low-key, but there was a buoyancy in his step. Villa’s supporters were at their loudest and most exuberant. Shouts were hoarse from deep and long bellows. Emery had a toothy grin and hugged his close friend and director of football Damian Vidagany, who was waiting for him.
Vidagany was Emery’s press officer at Valencia in 2008 and like others close to Villa’s head coach, shares the school of thought that nights like Wednesday are a by-product of the Spaniard’s dedication and expertise.
“The Premier League has 20 of the best 50 best managers in the world,” said Vidagany. “Unai is close to the top level that marks Pep Guardiola. It’s a matter of time to get there for him. I’ve never seen anyone in my life work as hard as him. This is leadership. He also has a good heart.”
Despite history and records falling against them — with Villa having won only seven per cent of all Premier League fixtures against City — the theme of discussions between Emery and players’ before the match centred on being the “protagonists”.
In lengthy analysis sessions, recently running up to an hour and 15 minutes, Emery stressed the necessity of retaining the ball for prolonged spells, enabling his side to control the tempo before then cutting through City’s pressure from the front. And as ever, his players brought into the plan. “He’s naturally confident but he loves Emery,” said one source close to a key player in Villa’s dressing room who, like others, spoke anonymously to protect relationships.
Villa had reason to be bullish tactically. It is 10 months since their last home defeat (against Arsenal), a moment Emery retrospectively regards as a turning point. He held meetings with players, preaching that seizing control in matches would lead to the concession of fewer goals. More pertinently, he demanded an increase in approach and expectations. Fourteen games and as many wins later, Villa have equalled their longest-winning home streak in top-flight history. Expectations now are at an all-time high.
“(Emery) has been amazing,” said match-winner Leon Bailey. “His way of doing things is different. He knows exactly what he wants. Day in and day out, he knows what he’s doing to help us get three points.”
Emery knew the importance of Villa not solely reducing themselves to a counter-attacking threat. He wanted to create overloads centrally, selecting four archetypal central midfielders in a box shape that would lock on man-to-man against a City side without the suspended Rodri and a specialist midfielder.
There was a soft launch of the approach three days earlier at Bournemouth, in which the system used against City was unfurled in the second half. Emery has spoken about trialling different tactical systems during games, due to four fixtures in nine days affording scant time on the training pitch. Instead, messages needed to be explained while watching video clips inside the auditorium at Villa’s training ground.
Bailey’s role was instrumental in trialling formation. He was asked to stay high and wide on the right but, with Youri Tielemans playing slightly deeper nearby, make darting runs inside — similar to Ollie Watkins, who would stretch play in the opposite channel.
As encapsulated in his goal, Emery gave licence to Bailey in particular, encouraging him to dribble at speed and towards Josko Gvardiol. Within a touchline microcosm where the cogs in both managers whirred, Bailey’s usage was part of a broader plan to offset City’s rhythm.
“Sometimes at home, we are watching him and thinking ‘Wow, what a player’,” said Emery.
“He even plays better at home because he feels the love from the fans,” Bailey’s stepfather Craig Butler told The Athletic, watching from back home in Jamaica. “He’s very motivated by appreciation and how you feel about him — you’ve just seen that.”
As it turned out, Villa won possession in the final third 13 times against City, the most ever by an opposition team against Guardiola. They were shaken and stirred to dizzying levels and to the point where Erling Haaland was forced to clear inside his box while defenders slipped and slid in panicked scrambles to atone for errors.
“It was all about getting on the front foot tonight,” said one source close to the dressing room.
“We did the high press and being at home, we are really successful,” said Emery. “We have to be organised doing it and against City too, trying to recover the ball from their players is difficult. But we were very organised and did a fantastic job.”
While Emery carried out post-match media duties, members of his backroom team joined in with players’ dressing-room celebrations. It was controlled but jubilant, with team photos being taken before being congratulated by their families after they had made their way down from the player boxes.
This was a night to savour. Emery’s Villa have reached new heights and delivered the club’s greatest, most optimal performance of recent times — and they did so against Europe’s best team.

A great night out without even having a drink, I never knew that was possible!
Reading mentions of the 5-1 win over Liverpool, it’s impossible to compare the two really it’s such a different game now - I’m just thankful I was at both.
The 76/77 team was the most exciting to watch in my lifetime and was packed with players still remembered fondly as club legends and with a manager who without doubt got the best out of every one of them.
I have no doubt that a good number of the current players and the manager will hold the same great memories for our younger fans in 50 years time too. Enjoy the present!

The list of most chances against Citeh had us top and them 2nd. Of course they won't state they went 2-0 down to a 10 man team (Ederson sent off in the 12th minute) but they still came back to win in the very end of the match.

It's a hard one. City are financial dopers. Hate it regardless of how good they play. Klopp's 'act' as the smiley, happy, uncle wore thin a good while back. Replay the Spurs game - he fucking moans about kick off times let alone extra games. Arteta jeeps he is turning into Mourinho without the trophies.
I'd rather us or Spurs win. Neither will likely as not.
-
If it's not us, I can't be happy for anybody else but Liverpool would be the least worst option. I despise Arteta and don't want him to win anything, ever.
I want us to finish above Arsenal, because it gives Unai further vindication. They sacked the best manager in the country, and though I'm grateful they did, I want them to rue that decision forever.
-
52 years of watching the Villa has given some fantastic memories, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team play such confident, assured, focused, quality football as Villa last night.

Reading that gave me the same butterflies in my tummy that I got when I first met Mrs Edge.

McNulty is happy as it opens the door for Liverpool. Yeah I know he says he is an Everton fan but I have never know a rival fanC to write such sycophnatic drivel about their rivals over the last 20 years
Controversial perhaps but I'd be happy for Liverpool to win it if it can't be us. Man City not launching their annual comeback and being out of contention in latter part of the season, but Arsenal still bottling it would be glorious to watch. Although Liverpool missing out on the title by 2 points, bringing up that Spurs game again, would also be an enjoyable end to the season.
I don't want anyone "new" to win the league. That includes Arsenal. I don't "want" anyone to win the league apart from us. But if it has to be someone, the least-worst option is Liverpool, then City (as any trophy they win will always be tainted). But the next team to win it beyond City or Liverpool, I want to be us.

what a night! Villa Park under the lights is always magical.
I think my biggest shock (admiration in a strange way) was the people still leaving 5/10 minutes early.
If you were ever going to watch the conclusion of a Villa match!
-
i wouldnt mind Arsenal winning it to be honest, at least they arent sportswashing cheats.
-
A few Citeh fans at work. They are from the area to be fair. One just said Villa were outstanding and would have beaten anyone last night. Music to my ears.
-
That was the best team performance I've seen since that 5-1 vs Liverpool in 1976. The first 45 minutes of that game was on a level I don't think will ever be repeated. But last night, for the full 90 mins we utterly dominated, in every aspect of the game, the best side in Europe.
But the parallels with that team & what came are there. We have better owners now too.
With a bit of luck we can achieve anything over the next few years.
-
Probably need to have a chat to my neighbours who I know well.
But I was very loud.
I used to go on the lam from my ex round there. Dyas Avenue I think it was. You must know it.
Yep, I know it 🙂
-
The morning after the night before and I am still feeling a mixture of euphoria and disbelief at what I witnessed last night.
The Play-off final against Derby will remain engraved in my memory for the outpouring of relief and joy at the fact that we were back in the big time after 3 years in the Championship but to watch us dismantle and destabilise the League and Champions League winners was extraordinary.
It will be a hard push to replicate such feelings again (unless it comes on Saturday of course!).
Every player was magnificent and at the absolute top of their games even more than maybe seemed possible.
One for the ages.
-
The best atmosphere for an evening game at Villa Park in a long time.... Everton when we came back up was pretty decent, but still nowhere near the heights of Athletico Madrid or the penalty win against Inter Milan before it.
If we keep playing like we are and putting performances together like we are, the roof is going to come off Villa Park. Bottle that up and mix it with next season in the Champions League.
Saturday evening, fuelled by an all-day piss up is going to be electric!
-
*sob* I didn't see it! *sob*
Did the performance eclipse the 5-1 against Liverpool in '76?
I even got a text about it from my sister saying what everyone is saying in that her husband has never seen a Villa side play better.
Fantastic Villa!
Not for me, brilliant though it was. That night has yet to be surpassed.
-
Brilliant night, under the lights.
fabulous team performance, so hard to pick a motm. They were all brilliant😁
is it too early to start building a statue of El Maestro 😄😄
-
It was a perfect match. The scoreline did not reflect the performance.
One of the most complete performances I have EVER seen from my team, Aston Villa!
Emery , the El Maestro asks the players to impose his strategy and meet the demands !! Magnificent!! Still smiling let Unai keep demanding the best from the players!
Heroes the lot of them!
Let's go Villa!
-
If there was ever a manager to get the team to focus on Saturday after last night, it's Unai.
I think he'll change the team around, with Cash and Moreno coming in. He can't rotate Bailey though...
-
Reading all the comments, makes me realise how much Aston Villa means to all of us.
A fantastic night that I will remember for many years to come, so glad I was there to see it and be part of it.
We need to get behind the team on Saturday again, as that is going to be another tough game.
-
I woke up to a message off my dingle mate this morning saying "You lot were brilliant last night, reminded me of us under Nuno".
I don't think praise can get any higher than that.
A genuine snort into my coffe at that.

El means 'the', so you've just called him the the maestro.
-
I said to my mate at half time, 'you know I don't think I've ever seen us play better'. I had by the end of the second half.
The worst kind of cheats they may be but they are still the best side in the world, and we made them look like a newly promoted side, they still had to defend superbly to keep it to just one.
Every one of the player were incredible but Bailey, Kamara and Konsa were out of this world and I don't think I have the vocabulary to describe John McGinns performance. One that I'm sure Ill be talking to my grandkids about as the best performance Ive ever seen at VP, it had everything.
And the old place was truly rocking as only it can.

What I recall about that game was how quiet it was when they went off a half-time. It was as if there was a stunned silence. Few could believe what they had just seen
-
I couldn't go last night because I was down London for a work away day and Christmas Do. Ended up watching it on my phone with a growing gaggle of of fans of other teams - Arsenal, Liverpool, Palace, Leeds, Particle Thistle - all very pleased, mostly to see Man City lose but also for us.
We were absolutely faultless, I thought this side was playing close to its ceiling (brilliantly) but they smashed through to another level today.
Man City and Liverpool are both weaker than they have been in previous years. Arsenal have been doing just enough without really convincing. You never know do you? Play like that and we have no reason to fear anyone.
-
I feel drunk. Had the morning off work, been to the Box and still feel drunk. Didn't have any ale. But my mind is swimming.
I cannot comprehend what I've seen. How absolutely flawless we were. My 8 year old thought we were going to do them. I hoped. Hoped. That's all. Didn't fancy it. Seen us get to the cusp so many times and just felt nah, I think we'll come up short.
But then that. What have I witnessed. I don't know what to do with myself.
-
Teams losing key players left, right and centre too whilst ours are coming back.
-
What an absolute thing of beauty from start to finish.
Wonderful performance, wonderful result, wonderful night!
Every single player performed & we made ManC look a bit shit with our play.
3rd in the table, matching our home league win run, media talking about us being in the title challenge & deserved praise all round is nice for my smugness, but again, Emery proves what an absolute beast that he is by talking about standards not dropping, needing to be right for Arsenal, Bailey needing to be consistent, etc.
Demanding more. Expecting more.
And then you hear Bailey talk with raw & honest emotion & you can tell how much they love the manager & how close this squad is.
Something magical is happening at Villa Park & Im just happy to have our club back.
And credit to Guardiola for not giving excuses & admitting that we were just better than them last night.
I don't like him as a manager but that was a touch of class.

Other than a couple of half-arsed renditions of Blue Moon, and the utterly shit "We know what we are, Champions of Europe..." their fans hardly made a peep.
-
One annoyance from last night.......the Ref's inconsistent attitude to where free kicks were taken from.
Makes Villa retake a defensive free kick when they'd done so behind where the offence occurred but waved play on when Man City took an attacking free kick well in front of where the foul took place.
-

Match was later KO then usual for a weeknight, so maybe the trains connections didn't work for them if they left it any later?
-
Since my first game at VP in 1980/81, I don't think I've seen us dominate a game so completely.
We were excellent...and dare I say how proud I was of every single one of the fans. The support and atmosphere was exceptional.
-
Since my first game at VP in 1980/81, I don't think I've seen us dominate a game so completely.
I think we have plenty of times, but it would be extremely rare against a top side and certainly not against the treble winners of the previous season.
It was a masterclass in control and the players oozed confidence. Nearly everything came off there was little if any panicking and it was a joy to watch. Emery's team just keeps getting better.
-

This is very similar to me, i did have some beer but only 3 pints.
Last night, i was buzzing, adrenalin pumping through my veins, i knew i was off work today so watch MOTD and the first half re run on amazon. Got up early today despite the late night and watched the 2nd half.
I feel a bit emo today, partly over tired, but emo not because we beat man city champions of the universe best ever bla bla. But because we dismantled them in ways I have not see Villa do in 40 odd years of going. Most of the first half we did this , but from about 58 or so mins after they had 10 mins or so of possession, we just came, wave after wave, attack, press, pass, move, attack, press, pass, on and on. At one point there was a 5 min or so period when virtually all our players other than Martinez were in their half, Torres orchestrating from the centre, McGinn biting and harrying, Bailey swerving one way and other. I think that particular period ended with that brilliant save from Edison from Dougie.
There are no guarantees against Arsenal, if Im emotionally drained, God knows how the players feel. But whatever happens, under this man Emery we are absolutely the real deal. This really could happen.
-
Knackered today. Was out for lunch in Brum, was suitably refreshed, then carried on drinking in town, before having a few more at the game. Got home at 12.30am but then had to spend another hour watching the highlights over and over again.

I have been trying to think when the last time I saw us play as well as last night and yes it was that 5-1 Liverpool game!
-
my head is still spinning
-
Endeavour and passion on the pitch in cinque with a raucous VP. A night to remember. Roll on Saturday.

I’m knackered too and I’m meeting a couple of mates at 2:00 for a few pints. One Villa and one Blues so we’ll have fun! Tomorrow is recovery day then it’s all go again for Arsenal.
-
Watched the match with a couple of Man City fans! To say they were stunned would be an understatement of the highest order. :)
-
The atmosphere was great last night - I do wonder how it compares on TV to other big grounds?
-
I saw an interview with John Stones from, I think, the Man City media team, done a bit after the match and he sounded devastated. I know it's not just because they lost to us, they've gone 4 games without a win now, something none of them are used to, but something does feel a little different about this slump.
That said I won't be one bit surprised if they don't lose again for the rest of the season and finish 10 points clear at the top.
-
There was a period in the second half, everyone will remember it and I’m sure it’s been mentioned already, but it was sustained pressure every time they tried to come out We took the ball of them and it was just wave after wave of attack It was unbelievable to watch
I didn’t notice it, but my lad said Walker at one point looked up to the heavens hands in the air and basically said what the hell is going on
It was a memorable night, I think there’s plenty more to come
-
Don't usually post on the match threads as everything usually gets said but I have to say that, considering the opposition, for us to maintain that level of performance for the whole game was staggering. We looked much fitter, stronger and quicker than them. Absolutely up there with the Liverpool 5-1 from the 70's.
Agreed however in Liverpool 5-1 we rested in the second half😊

Yes just an amazing and incredible experience.
Almost surreal in its content.
The big concern was, after being so good in the first 45, were we going to inevitably conceed, and from 45-55 I though it was just around the corner but we were magnificent for the next 35/40 minutes. Quite magnificent.
That spell when we were camped around the Holte End was a bit of a defining moment for me with City resorting to the tactic we've adopted over so many years of just clearing your lines.
We needed a statement win to attract outside interest and we've got one now. Not that we're concerned about the lack of it.
With this manager in charge he, like all others, will have setbacks, but I think we can say that because of what he's achieving, our Aston Villa are clearly the real deal now.
-

The analysis over here pointed out how Walker was totally nullified by Emery's tactics. Digne was pushed up so high he was basically on Walker most of the night.
-
Foden looked very frustrated as well. That young lad looked completely and utterly out of his depth to be honest.
-

That's the really exciting bit about all this. We know this isn't some flash in the pan, just having a good spell of form like when we spanked the Scousers.
This is the real deal.
-
Just noticed the fucking fanny Foden has his squad number tattooed on his neck. Is that so they have to retire the shirt number when he is fucked off by Pep to a lower side.
-

Stones mentioned in his interview that they weren't able to build out from the back at all last night and they just never got any kind of momentum going. I guess the fact they didn't really have a midfield meant we could just kill them at the back and not have to worry about anyone getting it to Haaland.
-
Commentator out-of-context: "Pau Torres losing out to Erling Haaland".
Context: Ludo just gets ahead of Torres to win a ball 10 yards outside his own area after another one of our attacks (not even a freekick, just normal play). The "won" ball is then carried into his own box whilst under pressure resulting in a wild hoof out to no-one.
-
Foden looked very frustrated as well. That young lad looked completely and utterly out of his depth to be honest.
But for the first 10 minutes you’d have hardly known he was playing. That being down to our defending completely.
-
Still buzzing , got in about 7 am after meeting Vila mates down the pub who had just come back from the game , had to be done.
Ive seen Villa beat Liverpool 5 1 and Arse 5 1 in the 70s , watched us win the league and saw us in Rotterdam win the European cup , been buzzing after beating MAnure 3 1 in the cup and had some great unbelievable moments even recently beating Liver pool 7 2 but being with my son last night , running around the room , open mouthed and tears in both eyes and feeling dizzy as fcuk after , I was shaking for 30 minutes and said Im off to get pissed.
Was one of the best performances in a long long time ,might have even been some of the best football Ive seen , fcuking amazing and I realised this team could win the league in the next couple of seasons.
Im shattered . LOve you Villa. Just wish we was there .
-
Some of our football though.
There were more gasps and groans from the crowd than a 70's porn movie.
-
Anyone know if the 22 shots at goal include shots blocked by a defender which doesn't actually go towards goal. Because if they don't, that is another 9 shots we had last night. Oh and plus five to our catching other teams offside counter. So no, we don't need daylight rules please.
-

I know, I posted something like this last week, when we got to fourth! The Table is looking very good.
Hopefully we will continue onward and upward for Christmas 🎄!

Being a massive fanny, I took a screen shot of the table after we scored, just in case we ballsed it up and conceded. Should have had more faith!

Lewis was lost and Stones or Akanji second half were dreadful next to him . Phillips might not a great player but it's coming across vindictive from Guardiola not to to give him a proper chance. That guy from Wolves who came on looked another pub player. At least Phillips has a physical presence about him if nothing else. Walker as captain is another strange one, seemed like they were trying to move him on last season now he's an ever present. Looks finished. Thought the same v Spurs (with Rodri) that they are very easy to play against these days.
It was probably around this time last season that they were struggling badly, Guardiola punted Cancelo out as the sacrificial lamb and galvanised them. They are capable of it again but are going to need a fully fit KdB and Stones after Xmas to win the title.
-

It does, most stats sites break in down as on-target, off-target and blocked.

Can't wait to see Pete the Canadians Holy Trinity 😆
still pissed on Canadian Club probably .

Why do Man City need two team buses? Flash bastards.

The boy's Christmas jumper day at school today. He hasn't got one that fits, so he's worn my Villa one, bells and everything. Apparently he was a very happy chap, walking up the road with a spring in his step and a hearty "Up The Villa!” for anyone and everyone en route.
-
I didn’t notice it, but my lad said Walker at one point looked up to the heavens hands in the air and basically said what the hell is going on
It was a memorable night, I think there’s plenty more to come
The analysis over here pointed out how Walker was totally nullified by Emery's tactics. Digne was pushed up so high he was basically on Walker most of the night.
Stones mentioned in his interview that they weren't able to build out from the back at all last night and they just never got any kind of momentum going. I guess the fact they didn't really have a midfield meant we could just kill them at the back and not have to worry about anyone getting it to Haaland.
You would have thought the great Messiah Pep would have overcome that problem

Can't wait to see Pete the Canadians Holy Trinity 😆

Hopefully Crown Royal.

In case they ever give Pep his marching orders, he doesn't have travel back on the same coach as the players.

What are the odds of Pete suggesting that Pep requires the services of Paul Hansaker & 24/7 services to plug those defensive gaps?

My heart bleeds for Man City and their injury crisis. Imagine only having a bench with midfielders like Nunes (£53m), Phillips (£42m), Kovacic (£25m) and Gomez (£11m). The humanity!

yet Id have our bench everytime.

It’s always someone else disadvantaged to help explain our wins. Spurs were fucked. We had no injuries of course. I’m sure it will be Arteta in the stands as the reason Arsenal take a beating this weekend.

Anyone know if our Wes or our Nassef were in attendance last night? They must have been dreaming of January spending to fund the final tweaks in our treble winning season.
-
Very telling that normally winning post-match threads have less comments then losing ones because there is only normally so much to say after a win. This one is approaching 30 pages on the default view in less then 24 hours.
-

Looked like we were happy to let Walker have the ball to be honest. Watkins, Tielemans and Bailey pressed the ball when the other three defenders had it, but not Walker.
Wonder if they'd seen something in analysis to suggest that Walker isn't as good with time on the ball or maybe it was trap to press Lewis when the ball was played to him.
Either way, it looked a deliberate ploy and it worked a treat.
-

To be fair, their usual routine works extremely well for them, and with even one of the missing players in midfield they probably would have worked it out eventually last night.
What it does go to show though is that Haaland is not overhyped as such, but he's not the key to stopping Man City. You can sit 3 defenders on him all night and he'll still probably score if KDB or whoever is feeding him the ball all night. But if you cut off his supply he's not a miracle worker.
-
They looked drunk at times I thought. The amount of unforced errors, lost possession, even saw Ederson slice the ball out for a throw in. Looked really bad for them. Never seen them that sloppy before.
-
Never expected to be so relaxed during 6 minutes of added time, when only 1 up against Man City.
Lovely

Probably need to have a chat to my neighbours who I know well.
But I was very loud.
I was gonna ask you about that after your post earlier. Brilliant stuff.
I've lived in this house since I was 2. I spent two years in Lichfield and six in Worcester, but otherwise this has been my home. I have never heard anything like it.

I've noticed today that a lot of articles and discussions about the game start with the writers/pundits basically saying "we're not going to criticise Man City for a bad performance here because Villa were excellent/brilliant/world class"
It feels like a slight turning in the tide as far as how they're talking about us, and our wins. I've never given two fups what they say about us, but given how often people on here get worked up about the way they report on us, it feels like something worth mentioning.
Man City's Youtube page titling their highlight video "deflected strike sees City lose to Villa" is the only thing I've side eyed today.
-
...and even that is factually correct
-
I usually hate deflections and feel they should be banned or replaced by a free-kick from the point where the shot was taken but we should have won comfortably last night and deserved a bit of deviation on the pig's bladder.
-
The collective opinion seems to be they were lucky it was only 1-0. If it was the only shot we had you might feel a little iffy about it, but we dominated them all night.
In fact, if we wanted to rain on our own parade I'd say that 1 goal from 22 shots, 7 on target, isn't good enough! But 1 goal won the game, so fupp it.
-
I think I'm still in shock. I remember years back discussing with Chris Smith on here whether teams can perform for 90 minutes rather than having a very good 45 minutes. It may have taken some time but after last night I think I've finally won that debate. What a team performance. Every single one of them for every single minute.
The biggest shock was the performance of Carlos and Torres with Konsa at right back. Every time we've tried it in Europe and at Bournemouth last weekend we've looked shaky and just waiting for a fatal error to occur. Last night they looked like they'd successfully been playing that system for years. Watching Carlos look across the line, stepping up then back then up again to control the offside line was hilarious, Haaland was so busy watching him he forgot to see where the ball was or when to make a run. When he wasn't trying to stay onside skinny Pau Torres had him in his pocket. Another Villa player along side Bailey who had their best games in a Villa shirt.
Words can not explain how much I love our midfield, they are so important to everything we do and must go down in football history as the best £17m ever spent. All four were superb last night. I thought I'd seen the best and most complete midfield performance by John McGinn the other week against Fulham but last night he took it up yet another level. Where he gets the energy from I have no idea but nothing would make me happier and nothing more deserving than to see him lift some silverware as captain of Aston Villa.
I could go on about other players but much has already been said. Final memory will be the Villa fans. Bloody hell, what an atmosphere, what support. There will never be a goal more beautiful than watching the Villa fans celebrate a goal. The TV cameras are close by to the away fans and normally they come across as loud but last night, from the first minute, all I could hear was our fans. Such brilliant support and as Bailey and others have pointed out, it really does help drive the team on.
Unai is building something really special and I believe he's in it for the long haul. Despite nearly shitting myself when I saw his team selection, once we kicked off I never really doubted us. After the goal we looked so comfortable, not once did I think Man City would equalise. We were that good and he deserves all the credit for getting the players to buy-in with his methods. The man's a genius and it's still early days. Allow yourself to dream. This is real.

You are getting smashed and overrun in midfield, you have an England midfielder sitting on the bench, what do you do? Kalvin Phillips has to feel like shit, why on earth would he stay there?
-

Ha! In my defence we'd seen nothing before that made me think moving Konsa over to right back and bringing in Carlos would work. I'd also seen the highlights of their game against Spurs when on another day they could have scored close to double figures. I didn't see a queue of people before the game thinking it was a great move either. That said, I will try and tow the 'Unai knows best' line from now on and for the record, it wasn't me that needed a change of underwear for the last 15-20 minutes. ;) I've seen us numerous times comfortably see out games. Yesterday was probably easier than most.
Before I forget, I'm taking credit for the win. I was making spinach, ricotta and pecorino balls before the game and when rolling them out I realised I'd have 13. I made 12. Not that I'm superstitious but I wasn't going to risk it. ;)

It's bizarre.
When your manager would rather play defenders in midfield than pick you, there's something clearly not right.

He will stay because being at a "big club" will guarantee he is on that plane to Germany.

Usually on Canal+ Foot, I find the commentary is loud and the crowd noise seems to be turned down. I hate it. Saps all the atmosphere and emotion.
Not last night. Could hardly hear the commentator over the fans!

As always listened to many football podcasts while I was working today and they were all gushing over us. Think it was football weekly that said if you hadn’t known who won the treble last year you would have thought it was us given our performance.
Another one was “holy shitball…totally outplayed them on every level……..exceptional football….result flattered City……mildly laughable the difference in quality between the teams”
Edit. It’s a game that will live long in the memory.

The Word of the Year should officially be revised to the verb: TO EMERY.
Definition: to out think, out fight, out class.
Example: Manchester City have just been Emery'd
-
Emery's version of Saunders 5 - 1 against Liverpool in 76?
-
I was there for the 5-1 demolition of LIverpool in 1976. It was a scintillating display of attacking football against the future champions. However, the big difference is that, at 5-1, the game was over at half time. Yesterday, was a sustained 90 plus minute display in which we were superior to the current European Champions in every aspect of the game.
The amazing thing for me was that I just didn't feel nervous, so assured was our performance.
-
My heart bleeds for Man City and their injury crisis. Imagine only having a bench with midfielders like Nunes (£53m), Phillips (£42m), Kovacic (£25m) and Gomez (£11m). The humanity!
Bare bones.

It was just over a year ago I walked out of Craven Cottage halfway through the second half. Made my way to Putney tube station utterly demoralised by the effort of our team and Stevie G. By the time I boarded the train at euston Nas had pulled the trigger. Last night was another world in a different universe as far as our team performance is concerned. Thank you Stevie G, you did it for us.

I tried to reply last night on Dave's post re the 5-1 against the 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'
I think I was pissed and forgot to hit the post button
I was on the Holte that magical night, finished college, travelled in a mates Capri, parked up close to the ground and enjoyed the spectacle.
That season we finished 4th. but we had the league cup odyssey against Everton to live in memory
However we had some crap results on the way
losing twice to the Blues is hard to believe
77 and 78 were my two loving years, but looking at the stats we finished 8th and had average gates of 32,000
Last night was , awe and wonder.
That team and the management that set them up to play, last night was 10 out of 10 for everyone involved
I have been sceptical abought, high line, Konsa as full back
last night I was not nervous at any position we were in on the pitch or any amount of time added on.
Based on last night I am not scared to put my head over the parapet and say, bring them on.
This is a special team, with a special manager
Any thing is possible
-
Still buzzing after last night. Absolutely perfect performance and a nice clean sheet too. City only played as good as we allowed them. Don’t want to get carried away but we ARE in a title race at this moment in time.

Yep I remember that object display and thinking that players were just not buying into the managers plans (whatever they were)
Polar opposite now with Unai players fully on board with the coaching and revelling in the joy of it
And all been done since Gerrard’s departure with no takeovers or cash injections from state owned wealth funds
Which makes it all the sweeter

Did your house get egged one Hallowe'en?
You little bastard!!
Honestly Rory it seems like a lifetime ago and i was late twenties at the time and mainly inebriated.
Did you really egg my old house 😂
Haha I really, really wish I could say yes.
No, but I saw it happen. I was picking my brother up from after-school violin lessons at Calshot. The fuckers weren't even trick-or-treating, they were just picking random houses and egging them.
I knew who they were, because one of them had shot me in the face with a pellet gun in Turnberry Park.

Probably need to have a chat to my neighbours who I know well.
But I was very loud.
I used to go on the lam from my ex round there. Dyas Avenue I think it was. You must know it.
I know exactly where the fucker lives Perce, I used to live in Fowlmere Road.*

I remember as we were the last house on the road, some yoof used to hang out in the alley next to where we lived, i think i had a word about something or other once, maybe it was the egging! Moved up to Boldmere 17 years ago, so long time back, though my in-laws still live not far from the Towers, so over that way a lot.
Anyway…up the villa!

Fair comment, I sign off from this one

The forum just can't handle the Great Barr massive. Not our fault we're real Brummies and don't live in Shropshire, Ealing or Mexico!

Beautiful.

Reading this post match thread makes me happy.

Apparently the 5th time in the Premier League that we've beaten the defending champions.

Name the other times, GO!
Hope it's not Blackburn or Lesta.

I remember Blackburn being one. They were rubbish the year after they won it. Southgate got one of the goals for us, a good header.
Definitely not Leicester, for obvious reasons.

Wasn’t one the Liverpool 7-2?

Up there with one of my favourite ever nights at VP. The performance was outstanding. The feeling at the final whistle, it feels way bigger than just another win/3 points. We are onto something special with this group. Our ceiling is huge

Probably Arsenal in the late 90s?
Edit - the 3-2, parachuting Santa game.

I would have thought so. Another Man City one as well I think. And Blackburn was one.
-
Did see the list.
Think Manure in 2009. Blackburn 2-0 in 1996. Obviously Liverpool 7-2 and Man Citeh 1-0. Think the other one was Arse 3-2 in 1999.
-
I think the Arsenal game was 1998 - 25 years ago next week.
-
We beat Arsenal after they were Champions - Yorke's panenka penalty - does that count?

It's where you (or indeed your parents) are born. Not where you live. That counts.

Completely forgot that one. We beat Arsenal twice when they were champions that year then.
-
In no particular order - I can only think of two similar performances where we have battered a team of man city's level (that I've been present at) Inter 2-0, Man U 3-1 95/96.

Of course, but I don't know where Paddy was born.

On the Great Barr massive thing. Our first house was on Fowlmere Road purchased in February 1975 five months before we got married. We moved in in early August after getting back from honeymoon.
We had friends that purchased their house in Booths Farm Road at the same time and neither of us had much in the way of furniture so we hired a van, split the costs and we moved into our respective houses the same weekend.
This particular weekend the body of a young girl, about eight if memory serves, was found in Turnberry park. A house to house was conducted by the police and I was interviewed by two detectives, one who did all the talking and his mate who, was a shifty looking fucker who said nothing but was continuously looking around. Anyway I explained all my whereabouts for that weekend and they went away.
A couple of days later they came back and I nearly shit myself. They asked me more questions like van hire company, time of collection and drop off etc. When they'd finished they told me that they'd been around and interviewed my mate and we're back to see if our stories tallied, they did, thankfully. I never heard from them again but it was a scary experience.
I don't know if anyone was arrested for the death of that poor child but I've never forgotten her.
No more from me about Great Barr. Apologies for hijacking the thread.

There was an inquest four years back: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-48882666 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-48882666)

This is 12 minutes well spent. How Villa dominated Man City.

I was coming on here to share this. It's perhaps the best take and analysis I've seen of us under Emery. I loved the pass maps, made our fabled line to be so high that it's gone past the halfway line and is now 5 yards inside the opposition half!
I'm watching the extended highlights now after watching that, and it's adding to the enjoyment. I don't think I possess a sufficient number of pairs of eyes to watch us properly.

Here’s an interesting stat I saw online yesterday, wish I could remember where. Of the outfield players who started the game for us against Man City, the only one who DIDN’T create a chance was Torres. I’m not sure what they call “total football” these days, but that’s total football.

Torres did nearly score himself though with a good shot from inside the box superbly saved by their keeper, yes total football.
