Saturday 10th September, kick off 3pm.
Big one lads.
I think it will be much tougher than many are assuming.
Leicester are really up against it and they still have some excellent players.
Any win will do.

A must win.
Let’s see
-
A tough game that we'll underestimate at our cost.
I would probably start with the same team except bring in Dendoncker for McGinn and ensure the full backs are kept in check.
A win will give us 7 from 7 and that's a better basis to kick on with Soton at home next.
-
A win and a draw frm the next 2, probably keeps Gerrard in a job. Think Southampton at home will be easier so a point would be OK. They still have several good players.
-
Statistically Leicester must be quite close to getting a result which bothers me. A run of five losses is rare. Six rarer still. Here's hoping though.
-
Fuck - Rodgers has been tin-tacked - queue the Leicester bounce back this Saturday!
-
If we apply ourselves like we did on Saturday then we shouldn’t worry about them. It’s a huge game for us as it’ll show if we are moving in the right direction. Lose and I suspect the owners will pull the trigger. I think we’ll pick something up from the game.
-
For me the nature of the performance is more important than the result. If we play well, look interested, seem to have cohesion and appropriate tactics, I can take any result.

For me three points is more Important than the way we play, get a few wins together and confidence will grow which should lead to better performances long term.
-
They are playing with zero confidence and are poor at the back.
Draw

Has he?
-
2-0.
-
Poll added. Bloody amateurs.
-
Theres nothing anywhere about Rodgers being sacked?
Need a win, id probably take a draw.
There a wounded animal and hard to imagine they’ll just keep on losing.
Id be tempted to bring Dendonker in for McGinn or start with the team after McGinn got taken off on Saturday.
2-1 (Watkins, Coutinhio)
Martinez
Young. Konsa. Mings. Digne
Kamara. Dendonker
Luiz. Ramsey
Bailey. Watkins

Not as far as I can tell.

The first of two pivotal games for the Manager and if the result of this one is a loss then it's all on the Soton game.
The glimpses of tactical nuance and togetherness witnessed at the weekend need to prevail, I have to confess that although I thoroughly enjoyed the game I fear it will be an exception but we surely have enough to prove naysayers like me wrong and get a win? Time for positivity.
0-1

This for as well - must be close to McGinn being benched and why buy Dendonker and not play him

Looking forward to this one.
That's how they get you.

I’m not sure who’s assuming this will be straightforward. I think it’ll be very tough.

Bournemouth Lions first mini bus off the season to an away game. Much more confident after Saturday. The three previous aways have been nothing short of horrendous. A good day out spoilt by 90 mins of football. Hopefully a good performance and result. I'm assuming Gerrard will stick with the extra body in midfield which we so desperately need.
-
Considering Leicester have been regularly in Europe recently, won the FA Cup and PL in recent years and have a track record of selling their best players for big money, their financial situation doesn't make sense to me. Hopefully not another Pompey like situation developing there.
In saying that, Rodgers antics in recent weeks have been disgraceful. Pretty much begging to be sacked but of course won't walk away. Coach and players have downed tools, though look at his bench and there are plenty of his expensive dud signings like Vestergaard on it while he whinges about his problems at CB....
Anyway onto the game, McGinn I think will be dropped and Young will retain the RB slot. Key for me is whether we switch to 4231 and keep Ramsey further up the pitch or stay with 433 with likely Dendoncker replacing McGinn. If we weren't so low in the table this would be a game to play a very attacking lineup with full backs pushing on. But I'd say we will sit in again and try hit Leicester on the counter. A really nervy tight game in store with maybe a late Villa winner.
-
They are bottom and need a win. 'Cue' the Aston Villa Football Welfare XI with 3 points.
-
P.S. Could Guilbert return to the squad?
-
P.S. Could Guilbert return to the squad?
I would say there's more chance of Steve Hodge coming back.
-
I wasn't expecting anything positive out of the Man City game and came away happy.
I'm now expecting a good team selection, good performance, and a good result.
Leicester looking for their first win, we all know what happens next.
It is the hope that hurts the most.
-
I'm going for a 2-1 Villa win.
-
Oh good, the ref for the Leicester game is the clown on VAR for the West Ham debacle that happened this weekend just gone.
Referee: Jarred Gillett. Assistants: Simon Long, Richard West. Fourth official: Peter Bankes. VAR: Mike Dean. Assistant VAR: Mark Scholes.
-
That means he'll be on his best behaviour though so all good.
-
Fuck - Rodgers has been tin-tacked - queue the Leicester bounce back this Saturday!
Has he?
No. DC Comics is talking balls.
-

Bastard Mike Dean on VAR though.
-
The identity of the officials is academic in the absence of any who aren’t crap.
-
Hopefully we are the catalyst for Leicester to change manager.
-
Desperate probably managerless winless Leicester 2 so who you gonna call? Ghostbusters? No, Aston Villa! 1

Rumour is that he wants £15m payout with the ability to take another job immediately, Leicester have offered him £10m to go. Either way, the longer it drags through the week the better for us.
-
Well, he's entitled to a payout, and if they're trying to prevent him carrying on his career elsewhere, that's pretty shite behaviour.
-

Ugh, dirty cash. I was warming to him with his recent interviews, made it feel like he loved the owners.
-
Would love a win, but this will be a battle.
2-1 to us. Ollie and Mings
-

It does boggle the mind. He won the FA Cup, which is far beyond what the real Leicester (without the dodgy as fuck league title) have a right to expect.
I'd take the job, accept the £10m and (after paying off the debt I owe, and the debt of every one of my family & friends) do more good with it via charity than any of these thundercunts.
The money in the game is obscene.

Yes fingers crossed it isn’t concluded before we play them.
-
The not working again immediately is standard practice. They usually get paid over the lifetime of the remainder of their contract rather than a lump sum. It's why you see managers disappear for quite a while after they have been punted - see also Dyche. Sounds like he wants it all straight away and work again straight away. Which must mean he is being lined up for Villa. I hope not. I have changed my mind on him. He seems to blame everyone else but himself when things go bad.

I doubt he needs it either, apparently owns a massive property empire.

He could always resign too. During the summer when his reputation wouldn't have been impacted and enabled the club to get in a replacement. To be honest, MON leaving that time a week before the season starting left us in the shit but these I suspect are the antics he would have carried on with if he stayed.
-
It's not like Rodgers needs it, he's apparently got a massive property empire. Though he lost a bit when he dumped his wife for a much younger, slimmer, bottle blonde.
-

There isn't a single player or manager in the Premier League who "needs" more money, they're all wealthy to an obscene extent, but it's incredibly rare to find one who freely passes up a wage increase from a new contract, or a pay off when they get sacked.
-
No, I suppose it's pretty natural. Though if you're unhappy in your job and there's another waiting for you that you want, would you risk losing that to engineer a big pile of cash to add to your already big pile of cash?
-
According to Sky if he resigns he has to pay them money. Not sure how that works.
-
Maybe they put that clause in to stop him legging it once a better offer came along, like he did to go there. The only problem is you're bollocksed once you want shot of him.
-
Never been a fan of Rogers, just gives off that air of loving himself a bit too much.
-

I guess it makes sense if he's on a big contract. Good work by Leicester, apart from them now being fucked up as they want him gone, he wants to go and nobody dare pull the trigger.
Not sure why they haven't had a Protected Conversation yet, unless they have and can't agree. Anyway, the longer it goes on, the better for us.
-
That's probably the same for any manager - you resign you pay up your contract (or the club that poaches you does).
The fact that even after selling Fofana for £70m they can't afford to bin him is crazy. Hope they wait until after the weekend to make a decision.
-
Quite happy to advise him on the Settlement Agreement , especially on a percentage fee basis!
-
Maybe him and Stevie can do a job swap til the end of the season and we can all sit down in May and decide what we'd all like going forward.

I'd take that. He did really good things with that team when they were actually prepared to back him financially - played excellent football and picked up a lot of points.
Bit of a Brent, but a very good coach IMO.
-
Never been a fan of Rogers, just gives off that air of loving himself a bit too much.
Yep, that's the main reason I wouldn't want him, whatever his ability he's just not likeable. For someone truly exceptional I think you might hold your nose and live with it, but not someone with such a mixed record.
-
I don't think it's fair to call his record 'mixed', he's had relative success at every club as far as I can tell. He went closer to winning the league at Liverpool than anyone had since their heyday until Klopp.
I agree he comes across as a prick though, and gives the impression that if he was made of chocolate he'd eat himself.
-
That self-loving thing is thrown at him a lot (as it was with Pardew) but I haven't noticed him being particularly like that over the years. What has he said/done?

A tough game that we'll underestimate at our cost.
Very true. Despite having 5 put past them I thought Leicester looked half decent at the weekend, not half as crap as I was hoping for. The defence and keeper are their weak links but we're hardly a free scoring team so they shouldn't worry too much. Time for Ollie to start demonstrating he remembers where the back of the net is.

I just hope this isn’t yet another of our notorious Villa-esque results where we gift the points to teams on a bad run. We’ve already seen one of them against West Ham, so the mindset needs to be fully focused on getting all 3pts on the board.
-
I hope he starts with the following:
Martinez
Young Konsa Mings Digne
Luiz Kamara Ramsey
Bailey Watkins Couthinho
Get after Leicester from the off. Bring on the likes of Dedoncker to protect the lead when we're 3-0 up.
-
If we’re 2-0 up at HT I’ll start to get worried.
-

I’m in the middle. It’s subtle. He’s hardly Trump - but he’s hardly Mings humble either. Takes all sorts.
Decent manager.

The infamous envelope episode at Liverpool? Straight from the Brent school of management. He talks a lot of corporate speak shite.
His strength is in coaching and player development (where we struggle badly) and has had a few big successes in the transfer market (some turkeys too like Vestergaard). In game tactical changes not his friend and while ambitious he always has his eye on the next gig. He downed tools at Celtic when they didn't sign McGinn that time and not even hiding it recently at Leicester.

It's the likely selection but I don't think we should be moving Ramsey too far from Watkins.
If we switched to 4231 it would give us a lot more options. 3 man midfield might suit Luiz but Kamara, Ramsey and McGinn are all struggling with it. Can't drop Luiz after his decent display v Citeh, nor Bailey after he scored. Also gives us the option of playing Coutinho or Buendia at 10.
Same back 5
-------Luiz, Kamara,
Bailey, Coutinho/Buendia, Ramsey
----------Watkins

Problem is we’ve had one game where a more defensive selection has worked but that was against a near on top of the league Man City and everyone played well and look good
We’re playing bottom of the league on Saturday and most people are still going with a defensive minded team
The biggest question is how can we get players like Coutinho and Buendia into a workable formation because playing 2 defensive midfielders against Rubbish sides will get us nowhere, might as well have gone for big Sam
We have to be playing open progressive football against at least half the teams in the league, and that’s Gerard biggest challenge in my view
We have the players but Breaking teams down like Bournemouth and West Ham where we were on top for most of the game has proved difficult, Playing more defensive players will not help with that
It’s a conundrum which need answers

No matter what the level you need to physically match the opponent. That's something Gerrard forgot v Bournemouth. Seemed as if we thought we could just rock up and they would roll over for us. Chelsea and Italy played two holding midfielders in their recent triumphs that rarely got beyond the ball. They could all play on the half turn though, McGinn simply can't.

Isn't that rather the point? - we surely need to impose ourselves on the opposition first, by playing strong and dominant midfielders. That doesn't mean not playing one of Buendia and Coutinho from the outset, which can be done in a 4-2-3-1 set up.
I'd start with
Martinez
Cash-Chambers-Mings-Digne
Kamara-Dendoncker
Bailey-Buendia-Ramsey
Watkins
I'd be ready to bring on Luiz, Coutinho and Archer at some point (this game being an ideal time to the latter some more gametime, agains ta poor defence).

I like your pointing-out about McGinn and Hourihane before him not being able to play on the half-turn.
However, I feel the expression, like the recent "pivot/double pivot" discussion may leave some posters cold and confused. Can you explain what this half-turn fully means and why it's so important, so that people can understand the qualified criticism that McGinn receives?

I always used to say to anyone who would listen that Hourihane always received the ball facing his own goal and in that split second to turn around the press was on him - and that was in the Championship.
McGinn is very much the same - watch how may times he receives the ball facing his own goal, takes a touch to control and then has to spin round to keep the move going. This is the reason he gets into trouble so much as that split second time to do that allows an opposition player to press him and if he is lucky his spin using his large arse can get him out of trouble. When he is not so lucky, or if his first touch is not great (which it often is not) then he either turns directly into a block or he is pressured to release the ball quickly - usually a 40 yard punt hit and hope to no one.
You watch the better teams and their flowing moves usually see the ball always in front of the attacking player where they can take it in their stride without breaking motion and keep the move going forward at pace.

These are 2 slightly different problems.
I think there's an element of truth that McGinn can be a bit Laboured in taking possession, turning and getting his head up. It is, in my opinion, the biggest reason why he struggles when he's too deep. A big part of being a good DM is having thr ability to take the ball from the Keeper and CBs and start an attack. As a team in general it's been something we've been poor at for years though and that's including players like Luiz and now Kamara who are easily capable of providing this, which makes me think the bigger part oft he problem starts elsewhere.
The 2nd part about how we pass is a much bigger problem and could well be caused by the same flaw as the bigger problem I mentioned. If you watch how we play (tand it was really evident in pre-season and in our poor start) too many of our passes are 'soft'. We make the recipient collect the ball and take an extra touch to open play up. It's only a minor thing but it means most of our play is 2-3 touch and often requires us to stop/slow-down or even turn around. All the little fractions of a second that this wastes is a big part of why we look so slow. When it clicks and we make things happen it's usually because we've had 2-3 moments of play where we can play 1-touch or where we find someone on the run who doesn't have to break stride.
I suspect this started because it was how Grealish liked to start play so he could control the tempo and too many of our players just got into doing it as a habit. If Gerrard can fix that and make our passing crisper and more 'in front' of play I think the comments about our lack of pace would thin out very quickly.
-
You're right about the passing Paul. Too often they're either just backwards, which gives all teams time to shut us down, or they're not played into space, meaning the receiver has to take an extra touch instead of running onto it or hitting another first time pass. Teams like Man City can get away with it, when 10 'safe' passes in a row are then finished with a killer pass from the likes of Foden or de Bruyne, but too often we'll get the ball in midfield, pass it back to a midfielder or defender, pass it along the defensive lines, before running out of options and then hoofing it and losing it.

I usually sit in the North Stand or Holte End so get a view from behind the players. It has been the case for many seasons now where movement off the ball when we are in possession is not great. Gerrard's formation has exasperated this as we are so disjointed.
There really are few options when defenders and central midfielders are on the ball and when the ball goes out wide, our full-backs are isolated and have to go backwards.
As I say, this has been an issue for some time and we have struggled when the onus is on us to have possession for longer spells and try and break teams down.
-
Some decent debate on how defence and midfield can control and move the ball more effectively, sometimes it’s not a right or wrong scenario but just different tactics and skills of how to play
Seeing as Hourahine and McGinn have been brought up the biggest difference between the two in my view is that McGinn always tries to move the ball forward most of the times he gives the ball away it’s because he’s trying something positive, Where is Hourihane was very cautious safe and in my view slowed the game down too much,
In summary you’re always going to give the ball away more times when you take more risks
Although I agree his form is rubbish at the moment and needs to be taken out
Moving away from that little nugget the link up play between the back four and midfield is without doubt the biggest problem we have had for a long time, again that’s just my own opinion
The amount of time we spend passing around the back with no real intention or idea of knowing what to do it’s nothing like what Man City do as Rizzo says And often leads to lumping the ball up in the end anyway
It’s incredibly frustrating to watch and it’s a combination of needing better tactics as in the midfielder’s dropping back to move the ball forward or better players
It’s the reason Grealish played so deep, he’s probably the best player we’ve seen at VP For at least 20 years And he was a genius at not losing the ball in very tight situations and moving it to someone else in claret and blue
We obviously miss that because he was One of the best we’ve ever had
The whole defence midfield is an interesting debate everyone has their own view mine is I like more progressive front foot football and not so much The two defensive sitters that’s not to say it should never be used but not as a default position for me
-
Some decent debate on how defence and midfield can control and move the ball more effectively, sometimes it’s not a right or wrong scenario but just different tactics and skills of how to play

I'm generally with you regarding the holding midfield set up, but I'm convinced with the players we have we'll see far better attacking play by giving our attacking players more room to play in and drawing teams onto us a bit more.

I think if a team is struggling its often a default position to try and add a bit more security into the team with more defensive minded players. Whilst id prefer us to be more attacking, i think at the moment we need to get back on an even keel and probably grind out some results. If/when we are able to string a few results together and confidence grows, we could then go more expansive again against the right teams.
Footballs funny in that ability of the players obviously makes the difference but confidence and momentum count for an awful lot as well. Id be more than happy being a bit mire defensive minded and grinding out a couple of one goal wins against Leicester and Southampton, if that built confidence amongst the group to go out and attack teams more.
-
I agree with the idea above of using a solid midfield base to give more freedom to the attacking players. Although Gerrard hasn’t really used the option yet having 5 subs to bring on gives a manager the ability to switch styles quickly if needed.
We’ve been too inconsistent to predict the result with any confidence.
-
Personally I like the idea of 4231 with the squad we have.
So long as 1 of the 2 is Kamara or Luiz who are probably the best 'transition' players we have to get the ball to our attacking players in good areas of the pitch. By having the 2 you also allow the fullbacks to get forward more, which is clearly something Gerrard wants us to do.
For the 3 the biggest problem is that we've left ourselves a little short. We have no choice but to go a bit lop-sided and have width on the right and be narrow on the left. If we can let Digne push forward that's not such a problem, just something we need to plan around. Having Buendia or Ramsey on that side in front of him gives us the work rate and agression to make teams a little more reluctant to push forward too quickly and they certainly won't want to be dwelling on the ball out there. That also frees Coutinho up for more of a 10/false 9 role where he can be told to stay up the pitch and fairly central so we get him on the bal lwhere he has more chance to hurt teams, playing off a willing runner like Watkins allows for that but if Ings comes in we'd probably need to go towards more of a 433 and repalce Countinho with someone a little more willing to work off the ball, which is where McGinn adds some value potentially.
-
Thinking about the Arsenal game specifically it was painfully clear how much better drilled they were at one-touch passing, quick movement, one-twos, flicks in tight spaces after drawing the opposition marker in. Simply receiving the ball, having a touch, and then looking for the next pass is rarely going to create any space in this division which means you are relying on a player with unreal pace/skill or a mistake from the opposition to allow an overload or create a chance. As such, as many have mentioned before, our slower passing game will invariably lead only to either an error by us to give the ball away or a relatively harmless punt upfield for Ollie to chase. At best we might work a situation where Cash/Young or Digne might swing the ball in for us to compete for in the box. This is an option every now and then (more so if we had someone bigger in the box!) but shouldn't really ever be the main plan. Would be different if we were able to quickly move the ball and work space for the fullbacks to bomb into closer (or entering) to the opposition box so they could attempt to pick out a player in the middle then I've no doubt we would see the results.

Johnny Giles has always described it well in terms of "moral courage" as he sees it. A guy playing on the half turn is always at risk of being dispossesed so the player has to have the courage to keep making himself available for the pass and secondly getting turned on it quickly. To be honest it also takes a lot of skill, good balance/strength. The other type of courage in flying into tackles, not that Giles was shy about it, he saw as the easy part and the one traditionally favoured in the English game.
The likes of Luiz particularly and even Kamara the last day infuriated me, if they sensed even a hint of pressure they were returning the pass to the likes of Mings. Luiz clearly has the ability but too often he is to willing to pass the buck. Then the likes of Mings gets it in the neck for going long and losing the ball. Maybe Gerrard to be fair thought Carlos would be able to step into midfield as another body, though there was no evidence of this at Bournemouth.
I think we too easily forget how good Grealish was in getting us playing through the lines when we looked like we were going places. Luiz and McGinn as a midfield two had plenty of good games then but Grealish was always an outball for everyone.

Agreed about Grealish, John. You rarely if ever saw him give the ball away, or get tackled fairly. If he ever lost the ball it was mainly because he was running with it and got fouled. When he was at his best he just it so much easier for the rest of the team. He could go past defenders on either side, whether he was running at full pelt, or was almost stationary. That made it easier for Watkins because he'd be getting a lot more balls passed to him in dangerous areas, and also made it easier for the likes of McGinn, because if teams were sitting depper and double marking Grealish, he'd have more time on the ball and could play in a more advanced position.

Could it be that kamara is going to be pushed a little further forward and Dendoncker playing Kamara's position.
I keep seeing training clips of Kamara playing further forward.

The best thing about him is that he was able to quickly transition defence to attack on his own. We didn't really need to play out, as he would pick balls up in our defensive third and before you knew it we were in the opposition's half.
When we were in the Championship, he was able to do it from a central position and then from a wide area when we came up. He could literally get us to the edge of the opposition box on his own in no time and we could go from there.
Enough about him anyway. I think one of the reasons we tend to do OK against the better sides is that we can play on the counter attack against them and that suits us. When teams come and put everyone behind the ball, we just don't seem to have too many ideas how to break them down.

ha ha very good, see what you did there

I hope he starts with the following:
Martinez
Young Konsa Mings Digne
Luiz Kamara Ramsey
Bailey Watkins Couthinho
Get after Leicester from the off. Bring on the likes of Dedoncker to protect the lead when we're 3-0 up.
Following the training videos online, the following were not spotted training yesterday ;
On top of Carlos, Guilbert, Cash, Digne, Mings, Buendia and Archer were all missing !
That will significantly change selections above if not available Saturday
Club just tweeted, Josh Feeney and Tommi O’REILY both included in first team training this week too
-
3-1 win for us
-
If those players who missed training aren't fit to play this weekend that's going to be serious disruption to our defence, regardless of what some may think of the individuals concerned. That's 75% of our most recent back four potentially missing.
In fact, if you count Carlos as someone who would have played if fit it's even worse.

All games will be off surely? Giving Steven more time with his troops to explain how he wants them to play.

Man utd played tonight? I think the games will go ahead Saturday

No chance any British league games get played this weekend.

My last "no chance" prediction was Potter to Chelsea so I've got good form for this.

probably what the Queen would have wanted knowing her attitude to life, the show must go on

They said the European games went ahead as fans were already there (and the game had already kicked off, in the case of Hearts) but would have been called off otherwise. They've called off two English, one Scottish and one NI game scheduled for tomorrow already, and will confirm more details about the weekend's games tomorrow.
I'll be amazed if they go ahead.
-
Yeah they'll be off, bad for us as Leicester look more of a mess than we do atm.

Another who thinks pretty much all sporting events in this country will be postponed this weekend.

Still as gutted as ever when a game gets called off. Even when we’re shit.
I remember a game v Man City. I woke up to see nothing but deep snow everywhere I looked outside. The then Mrs P said ‘the game will be off then’. (We lived in Chelmsley).
I was really hopeful and optimistic that Aston would be fine.
‘Don’t be so fucking stupid’ were her wise words.
Liverpool at home one Boxing Day in the nineties, new issue of the fanzine. Financial pain thrown in there as well.
-
Surely it would be better for the games to go ahead and have a fitting tribute at the grounds.

We can't be having that, our lives must grind to a halt for some unknown reason.

That Liverpool game in 95 was just frost wasn’t it and most were at the ground.
The worst was Burnley last season as the late decision felt avoidable.
-
It's a tricky one because it will look incongruous if football is off but the St Ledger goes ahead, or vice versa or just the Test continues and nothing else.
I read a piece last night that said that the instinct is not to have an extended period of mourning and to try and get back to normal fairly swiftly while still acknowledging what has happened. The postponements today feel right but when you go into the weekend I think everything has to go ahead over the two days or nothing, the line becomes blurred otherwise and then we'll have accusations of disrespec' etc etc
-

That Man City match was supposed to be my first. As a kid, that was the only time I'd been gutted by the sight of snow.

Happened to me in 1976: travelled by train from Leicester only to find the game vs Spuds was off. Travelled back to Leicester with a trainload of the unwashed: they beat Leicester 6-2 that day (Kenny Burns scoring a hat-trick, IIRC).

I got all the way to the A38 island under Spaghetti when the Burnley game was called off in the pandemic. Carried on round and got back on the M6, and spent the afternoon in the pub instead.

If they are going to cancel it, could they please get a move on. It'd be nice to have as much notice as possible if they're going to bugger up everybody's plans for the weekend.
-
Let the football go ahead. Let us have a minutes silence. Let the Scousers make an absolute show of themselves and let's all get on with things.

I think there was a meeting scheduled with DCMS to make a decision this morning, so I'd guess an announcement would come late morning / lunchtimeish?
Reckon 80/20 it's cancelled.
-
Wouldn’t be surprised if no football until after the international break
-
There was a call at 09:30 so the decision shouldn't be too far away.
-
The Athletic have just said the government have stated that it's up to organisers if matches go ahead. If they do, they should consider a minute's silence and black armbands etc. Premier League to meet at 11am. I reckon it's now maybe 60/40. They'll want to cancel it for fear of being seen as disrespectful, but I genuinely think that rearranging games will be extremely difficult this season.
-
11am I heard that decisions will be announced.

Assuming it’s called off you can guarantee that by the time it is rearranged Leicester will have had a massive improvement in form.

Seeing the West Ham fans sing God Save the Queen last night was quite moving. I feel that would be a more fitting tribute and then carrying on but whether that's what happens, I have no idea.

Absolutely pathetic nonsense.

It's not without a certain Orwellian undertone.
I shudder every time I hear just the phrase "national mourning". Adding "guidance" on it is, as you say, dark.
I think games should definitely have gone ahead, partly because the images from them would be a far better tribute and truly "national" portrayal of the majority feeling towards Queenie than having empty streets and the world stopping. Having a mandated period of wailing isn't a true reflection of the affection for Her Maj.
-
Fixture congestion will be interesting this year, particularly for the sides in Europe. Might work to the benefit of everyone else.
-
Just announced, all games off.
-
I cannot see a reason as to why we need to postpone sporting events.
-
What a load of fucking bollocks. Country on the brink of a recession and they're going to cost the country billions more by cancelling a load of stuff that really doesn't need cancelling. 'As a mark of respect' my arse. What's disrepsctful about the country going about its business. Just about every shop and other business is still open.

Ludicrous.

Indeed, how is an empty stadium, people losing a day of work, unused train tickets, all of that, how is it any more respectful than stadiums full of people belting out the national anthem?
The country is an economic mess right now, we can't afford to do this sort of thing
I also read that the week after likely to be off too.
-
I would imagine HRH would have wanted for everything to just carry on and not have cancellations because of her death

Get on with your work scumbags.

There will be people right on the edge at the moment, a weekends lost income could potentially see them jumping in front of a train. Nevermind eh!

Apparently it was the leagues decision, twats.
From the BBC:
The league's chief executive Richard Masters said: "We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty's long and unwavering service to our country.”
The government's national mourning guidance advised that cancelling fixtures was not obligatory, leaving the decision up to individual sports.

Costing the proles money and not giving a toss - actually it's the perfect tribute.

Isn't Masters Villa? Maybe he hates Gerrard and wants as much new manager bounce as poss.

I think that there’s been a suggestion that there might have been an issue with availability of sufficient police for matches, although I struggle to see that myself.

Are they postponing the Horse Racing?

It really does not make any sense.
I can not imagine it was in her wishes.
I absolutely believe that there should be a day of Official Mourning, the day of her funeral but just stopping everything serves no purpose.
-
Are they postponing the Horse Racing?
Tomorrow and moving the big races due to go off at Doncaster to Sunday, when no football will be played.
This has nothing to do with showing respect and everything to do with the fear of being accused of not showing respect. Everyone I have spoken to, Royalist or otherwise strongly disagree with this decision.

I also don’t think the Queen would have wanted this. They would have been much better to give football fans the opportunity of singing God save the Queen for the last time. That to me is real respect.

Seems a pretty unanimous view that 'the show should go on'

Horse racing is cancelled tomorrow but back on Sunday.

Postponed! Wrong decision imo.
There would have been nothing disrespectful about football going about its business as usual and fans/players choosing to wear black armbands, singing the NA or engaging in a minute's silence/applause.
-
Seems a pretty unanimous view that 'the show should go on'
It is in Rugby Union and Rugby League and a myriad of other sports.
-
Why can't there just be a minute's silence beforehand, as will be the case at theatre performances etc. How is football any different?
-
I bet even Will was looking forward to having something to take his mind off things for a couple of hours.
-
Even if you don't like the royals, I think that the way West Ham fans sang GSTQ last night is a far better tribute than cancelling games.
-
Even if you don't like the royals, I think that the way West Ham fans sang GSTQ last night is a far better tribute than cancelling games.
Yep agreed.
-
What a load of fucking bollocks. Country on the brink of a recession and they're going to cost the country billions more by cancelling a load of stuff that really doesn't need cancelling. 'As a mark of respect' my arse. What's disrepsctful about the country going about its business. Just about every shop and other business is still open.
Totally agree. Fucking ridiculous decision.
-
Lousy decision, football brings together the nation like no other sport/pastime. Apart from maybe pubs which I'm sure will be still open.
I have heard its just this weekend (Fri to Mon games) and then everything else will be on, other than games on funeral day.
-
Are they postponing the Horse Racing?
What’s your point?
She loved her horses.
-
Entirely predictable but still immensely frustrating that thousands of people will be out of pocket and had plans ruined because we live in a country where the head of state must be worshipped.
Even worse is the way in which the pandering morons are spouting their "ITZ ABOUT RESPEKT FOR R QUEEN"
-
Whats been the justification for cancelling football but not a lot else?
-
It's the right decision.
Would be very disappointed if Southampton at home goes especially if funeral is scheduled for the Monday.
I know it's a friday night but I can't recall previous home matches to Southampton needing endless police presence so we can surely get by with minimal presence and that will go for other non-london fixtures aswell.
-
Absolute load of old bollocks. Kids (all grassroots) football cancelled as well. So as well as not being able to watch football, kids run around their local parks and clubs kicking a ball. A load of fecking shite
-
Ludicrous.
-
It's the right decision.
How and why?
-

Yup, Im really annoyed about that, the kids can do pretty much whatever they usually would on a Sat, other than play organised football. And that after losing so much time over lockdowns.
Its getting a unanimous kicking on every platform.
-
My under 10s are training tonight, they need the distraction really, it is somber enough at the moment

This looks increasingly like a poor decision and rather than showing respect it has created an unnecessary fuss and resentment.
-
It's the right decision.
How and why?
I should've put an "imo" after that comment.
Just feels with the news still being absorbed and reflected it feels right to have weekend to mull over. I'm no royalist but that's what my instinct is.
Certainly shouldn't be cancelling Southampton at home just like that though especially if a funeral is still 48-72 hours away so I'd be very disappointed and suspected all clubs are waiting to see when it's scheduled before making individual calls on whether to play or not.
-
Southampton should be cancelled. Not the match, just Southampton.
-

But yet my kids training is on tomorrow it’s just the games (Sunday) that are off. Utter batshit decisions today. If next week goes I’ll be fuming
-
It's the right decision.
How and why?
Exactly. ALITA provided info on two previous monarch deaths and football was played. We are very OTT these days. This decision is akin to fake poppy wearers on TV chasing good PR.
-
Rugby is all on…
-
Southampton should be cancelled. Not the match, just Southampton.
On similar vein Leicester has greater right.

It's the right decision.

I have to say that's up their with one of the most wrong posts ever on here. If people are genuinely upset and need to "mull over" then nobody is forcing them to go to games if they don't want to. What we've got now is football cancelled, with all the cost and inconvenience to individuals and companies that entails, but you can still go to a rugby match or horse race meeting of your choice. There's nothing right about it, it's an absolute fucking disgrace.
-
Word is the Test and Golf will resume tomorrow, mercifully.
-
it's an absolute fucking disgrace.
These are deeply emotional times but I dont think we should be stealing other poster's catchphrases.
-
Makes the decision even more ridiculous

Well there is precedent so it's not some 21st century wokery stuff. I've never gone to see any royals opening shopping centres so I'm far from rabid monarchist, just respect her service and what she represented for the country.

Liverpool-Newcastle cancelled on 31st August 1997. Deceased wasn't even a working royal at the time of course....
Games being called off this weekend was always inevitable imo, perhaps I just have a different tone as I don't have a ticket or hospitality to Leicester.
I do have a ticket for Southampton at home though so won't be happy if that's called off for no good reason! They really should be making every effort to get next weekend's fixtures on aside from those in London where it may be logistically impossible.
-
FFS so rugby matches tonight (Coventry) and Sat/Sun (Prem) are still on but the Premier League and EFL are off all this weekend and Monday? Where's the consistency? There are people on the breadline who can't afford lost wages/revenues for small businesses because of such last-minute postponements - think the football authorities have been bit too rash on this one, can't think why a proper minute's silence and black armbands would not show proper respect. They could even play the national anthem beforehand (like the game I went to in the States a few weeks back)

-
The fucking rugby is on. The fucking rugby.
-
I bet even Will was looking forward to having something to take his mind off things for a couple of hours.
It would have been nice for Villa's inevitable shit performance to only have been the second most upsetting event of the week for him.
-
Grassroots football in Scotland on.
-
Are they postponing the Horse Racing?
What’s your point?
I think it's disrespectful to whip animals so bored people can throw money away during a period of mourning.
-
The Scottish Opera is on tonight. Rugby is on, horse racing is on, it's just us plebs who can't enjoy our weekend as we choose to do.

Liverpool fans would've been relishing this moment given they've been booing the anthem at the last two cup finals so I think behind closed doors they just didn't want the potential of one match disrupting things and then football gets yet more bad press for a week etc.
As I've said I'd be very disappointed if next week's match gets cancelled aswell, they should be on if it's logistically possible in the area the fixture is being played. Will surely have no choice if the 3-4 English teams all complete their european fixtures anyway.
-
I bet even Will was looking forward to having something to take his mind off things for a couple of hours.
He’ll probably be able to find something to take his mind off things.
-
Of course it's logisitically possible to put the matches on, just likes it's logistically possible for tomorrow's matches to be on. There's no good reason for cancelling them, whatsoever. All it's done is massively diminish goodwill towards the Royal Family, and isn't actually achieving the 'respect' it sets out to.
-

I'm sure he'll crack on with something else.
-
If the hospitality sector wasnt in enough of a mess, you'll now have a load of independent traders having a load of short life food that isnt going to be sold tomorrow. Good for the foodbanks, not so much for them.
-

I meant it more in terms of policing resources so probably London based games will be called off next week with endless people going down there to line the streets for the funeral.
However we're playing in Aston on a Friday night and Southampton at home must be as low risk as you get during a season, will certainly be in bottom 5 list for WMP so I'd certainly be as miffed as you if that gets grouped in blanket postpontment, has to be a match by match decision there.
-
Rugby is all on…
Not entirely. Looks like they'll lose one match from today...
The two games scheduled to take place on Friday evening – Bristol vs Bath and Sale vs Northampton – have been postponed. It is expected the Bristol match will take place on Saturday instead.
-
Personally, I think its the right decision, but recognize many don't like it.
For Villa, it may work in our favor. We have a home game coming up Friday, that should generate a cracking atmosphere, is very winnable, and could see us on a roll into the break and more time to reset, get our new signings up to speed etc. A loss against LCFC would have created a real bad feeling.
-

A lot of foodbanks rely on matchday collections.
-
I can't quite put in to words what a fucking joke of a decision this is. Like others have pointed out, a compilation of hundreds of thousands of football fans belting out the national anthem would have been shown around the world.
My brother was taking his kids down to London to watch a WSL game as well tomorrow (they've never been). The cost to customers and businesses... just utterly pointless.
-
I'm a royalist, but still think all sport should go ahead, in fact I reckon, that is probably, what the Queen would of wanted, especially the racing!
-

Not sure it's really possible to 'belt out' GSTQ 😉 but I agree.
-
A rubbish decision. What ****** there are in charge of things in the UK. Fucking useless.
(Leicester needed to be utterly smashed, also)
-
Didn't realise Leeds-Forest was on Monday night, certainly bizarre that has been called off given the date it's been played.
It is a bit lazy if all fixtures in locations are being lumped in, I certainly disagree with that part of today's decision and really really hope they don't apply it to next weekend aswell otherwise I'll be straight on the Southampton pre match thread complaining to the heavens.
-
I can’t add much other than to say this is an awful decision. We’re not in the 18th century anymore.
If some people want to mourn the passing of a 96 year old they’ve never met who lived a life of privilege, go ahead, take all the time you need.
But don’t enforce / inflict it on others.
-
I think the best respect to honour the death would have been to have packed stadiums holding a minutes silence
Feel for those who will have travelled from abroad and long distances in the United Kingdom to watch their team and the loss of money etc
-
Absolutely pathetic nonsense.
Agreed.
-
Not the first time the FA have made a wrong call is it?
-
According to the FA, they have made the decision on our behalf as we all wanted matches to be postponed!! I think they live on a different planet.
-
Feel for those who will have travelled from abroad and long distances in the United Kingdom to watch their team and the loss of money etc
I had thought about booking to go over for the Southampton game given the atmosphere on a Friday night would have been decent. Glad I didn't now but feel sorry for Bertie Bassett.
-
Peter Crouch calling the decision odd.
-
Not just football, my kids Netball and Tennis also cancelled.
I don’t think it will be the only death this weekend.
-
I reckon the Queen (may she Rest in Peace) would have been horrified if she knew sport was going to be postponed on her account. Daft decision.
When I pass away, you have my permission not to close down H&V for a week or two. :D
-
Great North Run on on Sunday.
-
Garth Brooks concert still going ahead in Dublin
-
Garth Brooks concert still going ahead in Dublin
I don't think I will ever not do a double take when I see his name.

As mentioned on the golf thread. Wentworth resuming tomorrow.

Is he a better singer than he was a footballer?

I'll bet he's a better singer than he is a pundit

I'm in the minority but I think it's absolutely the right decision. It's called respect.
-
No respect for the poor sods that have flights, trains or hotels booked though is there?
-
No respect for the poor sods that have flights, trains or hotels booked though is there?
Plenty of events called off every year for lots of fairly shit reasons eg bit of snow.
This is the death of our Queen, after reigning for seventy years.
-
How is playing or watching football disrespectful?
-
I'm in the minority but I think it's absolutely the right decision. It's called respect.
Do you not think tens of thousands of people around the country singing GTSQ one last time would be a better tribute?
-
I think most respect the Queens memory but want to do so with a stiff upper lip and by getting on with life.
-
How is playing or watching football disrespectful?
I can understand the day of the Funeral but everything else seems a bit archaic in tradition
-

Like she always did

It's not. it's the temporary halting of "going about our normal business" that is a mark of respect.

Bollocks is it.

Bollocks is it.
As I said, I am in a minority on this, football, forum. Just saying what I think. As are you, very eloquently :)
-

This has nothing to do with the FA, etc having respect for the Queen. It’s to do with them not wanting the odd complaint about not cancelling the games.
Do you also think that the women that had to sit alone at her husband’s funeral would want such a fuss?
-
Wrong decision.
Hundreds of thousands Would have been given an opportunity to pay respect to the Queen.
So the other sports that are taking place are being disrespectful then?
Bonkers.
-

Can you not respect someone without cancelling everyone's plans for a weekend?

Question still applies. Can you not respect her without cancelling everyone's plans?
It's all a bit Kim Jong-Il for my liking.
-
Just a bit of context, games were cancelled in 1901 and 1952 for the death off the monarch (Edward had the good grace to pop off post season 1910).

I bet he loves Rangers.

I wonder if the letters page of the Times had many strongly worded complaints about people having their weekends ruined ...
-
I'd imagine, as now, the Times was wall to wall North Korean style hagiography.
You still haven't explained why it's disrespectful to play football. Should we all just stay in all weekend sobbing, would that make you happy?
How about let those that want to attend do so, and if you don't want to, you stay home? Is that an unreasonable position?
-
As has been said by others, the postponement is not being done as a show of respect. Rather, it's the fear of something happening that might be perceived as disrespectful. It's interesting that other sports are going ahead but not football. Makes me think that someone up top (wrongly) assumed that football fans couldn't be trusted not to cause controversy.
-

Yeah, 'someone.....who lived a life of incredible privilege and opulence by virtue of an accident of birth and in exchange for travelling the world waving at people'.
She was a human being. I will respect her as such, not as something more simply to accommodate your archaic belief system.

Yes. Everyone has to do what I say. Signed Kim.
All about opinions. I've given mine, and explained why, in the interests of the balanced debate. You think it's wrong and most on here (possibly all :) agree with you - all good !

I dont agree with our friend here but he’s expressed his opposing view in a pretty mild and polite manner, perhaps the ‘pile on’ is a bit uncalled for.
-
It's okay, mate. But your opinion is to stop EVERYONE attending. Why not just allow those that want to go to do so, and those that don't want to attend don't have to?
Seems very harsh on those who have paid for travel/hotels, etc, don't you think?
Apologies if I came across as arsey.

I've heard from a pretty reliable source (rather I didn't name them) that the FA were worried about Liverpool fans booing the National Anthem should that have been played before tomorrow's games.
I agree with others that Prince William might have appreciated the distraction of our Leicester game!
-
Nobody was halted from going to fucking work today, were they?
This. Alongside the gushing on social media with people who couldn’t normally give a shit. Work was open, I won’t even get sat off for funeral. But football is stopped yet plenty of other things are not. I get that people want to mark the passing of the queen but a round of GSTQ would be better than mourn you bastards because if you don’t you are not a patriot. But odd that work was open today to make money as a wage slave yet others will lose income tomorrow after 2 years of shit. If it was the funeral or the day of her death then fair dos but it isn’t

It is harsh on them I suppose, but the monarch doesn't die every week. It's hard to explain - it's the cancellation that is the mark of respect, not the fact people go or don't go. If it was on I'd go I suppose, I'm not advocating staying indoors with the curtains drawn. I'm glad it isn't though. Maybe its bollocks, but it feels right to me.
No offence taken as I said. I knew it would be an unpopular opinion on here. They probably all agree with me on majesty.com/forum lol

I get that. I think the way I feel can best be expressed as, she may have been your monarch, that's grand, but she wasn't mine.
FWIW I had nothing particularly against her as a person. But any king, queen, prince, princess, duke, earl, whatever, can fuck off in my book.
My respect to the woman, not the office.
-
Think football has totally missed the trick here. Every football ground could have paid respect to our queen. But now they will be empty. Missed a massive opportunity I think

Fair enough. And she would absolutely have respected your right to hold that opinion.

I bet he loves Rangers.
I wonder if they've changed the photo in their dressing room yet.
-
It's okay, mate. But your opinion is to stop EVERYONE attending. Why not just allow those that want to go to do so, and those that don't want to attend don't have to?
Seems very harsh on those who have paid for travel/hotels, etc, don't you think?
Apologies if I came across as arsey.

I think you're right. Sorry again for losing it a bit, my job over the last 28 hours has included about 20 hours of writing and publishing tributes to her on behalf of other people, so I think the false sincerity has burnt me out.

Haha no worries , I imagine it has. I'm a thick skinned bugger don't worry, I just like to say what I think even if I know no-one will agree with me. UTV and GSTK.

So people can go to watch rugby union, golf, horse racing, the Great North Run, rugby league or cricket but not football? Why is the national sport the only one where going to a match wouldn't be respectful?
-

Shut up football fan scum and know your place. Egg ball fans, horse torturers, apple throwers and walk ruiners are superior to plebiscite football fans. Know your place or we will make you.
In short it’s fucking hypocritical thinking we can’t behave

Dunno, but you've tied it to nationhood more than the others there. I wouldn't elevate it like that. If it's special, that could be grounds for treating it differently somehow.

From a royalist perspective, surely horse racing is more "special" if you're going to single one out? Seeing as that's the one she liked.
-
It's a load of bollocks that the match is off. Some bullshit contrived sense of "respect". I'm glad all the other sports commented on in earlier posts are going ahead because, quite honestly, why wouldn't they? We are making up the rules of grrief as we go along. What a load of shit

Thr argument about not going if you want to respect the Queen is a false one frankly. The point about the postponement is that nobody misses out.
I think respecting other people's rights to mourn, or trying to do the right thing, is a simple thing to do that shouldn't have the gnashing of teeth. It's a football match.
The Queen, like it or not, has been head of state for 70 of her 96 years. I'm not a monarchist but can see why this is such a big thing.
It's a shame that some have purchased accommodation etc, has anyone tried getting a refund or moving bookings?

Out of interest, do you think it would be right to call off the next round of fixtures (i.e. Southampton at home for us)?
I think a case can be made for calling off the games this weekend because it's such a recent event. Not so sure about the next round of games.

The Queen dying is a big thing, and people have the right to mourn. But why does that have to involve football matches being called off. Today I've been to take the kids to school, got a coffee on the way back, nipped to the shops to get something for tea and took my eldest to the opticians. 99.99% of businesses are open and life is continuing as normal. Why does infringing on people's right to enjoy their weekends as they see fit increase others' ability to mourn? The pubs are open, bookies are open, cinemas are open, lesiure centres are open, but we can't go to football. Football matches where respect could have been given, as it was at the West Ham match yesterday.
As I said before, you can go to just about every other sporting contest you'd like this weekend. It's arbitrary bollocks, and just another example of the nonsense that grips this country when people think being SEEN to do the right thing is all important.

this will upset the momentum we took from the city performance. Gerrard is still under pressure from some sections of the fan base. He needs results to come quick. couple of wins then the discontent might have dispersed before the international break. Now Saints becomes must win/ dare not lose.
Since he was hired Gerrard seems to me to be cursed. Everything he's done or tried to do has gone wrong.
He said in his first interview how important the cups were, then got drawn away at old trafford twice, the bissuma saga, Couthinio signing (bloke looks shot), the long injury to Carlos, the public spat with Mings, McGinns captincy and form, Beale jumping, Critchley and the passport debacle, the draw in the league cup and now a winnable game being postponed. Things just haven't clicked into place at all and not just results. Just seems inevitable whats going to happen

Why does she deserve more than that, John? When nobody apart from she and her family do.
A system based on the assumption that someone is better than everyone else, on the basis of a thousand years of their people being better than everyone else's people, doesn't have much currency with me.

FWIW, any postponement of any sporting events, as a mark of respect after the death of the Head of State of 70 years (whatever you think of the monarchy as an institution), should have been across the board, or not at all, not this half-arsed nonsense!

When the new North stand is built it will probably be called the Ron Saunders stand is he better than you or me ? no but he was better at football and we are respecting him for that
Same for the Queen not just for a few years of football management it for 70 years of service to the nation

Probably should have told her to die in the summer.
I'd be happier for the game to go ahead, but I understand why her passing means so much to so many people.
-
The game could go ahead and people could actually choose whether they want to go or not. Could choose if they want to sing GSTQ if they did go. And could choose how they pay their respects should they wish to.
-
Exactly. This is all about the removal of choice. People who want to make grieving compulsory inflicting their views on others.

I'm still fucking working mate, and will be tomorrow and Sunday. Paying respect for people who respect her so much they haven't written their own tributes.

We played after the deaths of Victoria, George VI, and Edward VIII.
Edward VII died in the close season.

It’s obviously a big moment for the nation but I’m with Risso on this. Other sports and cultural events this weekend are going ahead, including the English cricket team - representing the country - playing a test match, so I don’t see why football shouldn’t be played as well. If people feel it’s not the right thing to do they could simply stay at home and do want they feel is right.
My train ticket from London tomorrow is non refundable so that’s £50 down the drain. After speaking to the Trainline help desk, with no luck, I messaged somebody I know who works on the railways for help and his simple reply was “forget it, they are c**ts”. Somewhat harsh…… I know people from Ireland who’ve booked flights and hotel but their money is lost too, much more than my £50.
I imagine there are tens of thousands of people up and down the country who have lost a few quid this weekend on trains and hotels. Armchair fans as usual suffer not. The food and drink industry will lose a fair chunk or revenue this weekend.
-
I was bereft when Freddie went but if you couldn't care less it was cool. That sort of choice doesn't seem so readily available today.
-
And I was far more gutted about Freddie dying than Liz.
So was I. And I wasn’t remotely bothered about Freddie Mercury.
And I've always had you down as such a big fan of Queen's music. :(

Well we had the two cup finals recently and the anthem was on both occasions booed loud and clear so certainly get the feeling they wanted to avoid one of the minutes silences being massively disrupted (but didn't want to directly call out Liverpool).
I don't want to pile on Liverpool given the history of last few decades but to best of my knowledge their fanbase is only ones to show dissent at the anthem in recent times so think the FA got nervous at optics of that.
Was out earlier and generally it was just like any other Friday and you'd never have guessed the Monarch had just passed bar the advertising boards showing her image as sign of respect and also obituary notices being put up in shop windows.
I genuinely thought it would be ghost towns for days after her death. I got it wrong so yes in these conditions and given most other sports are continuing football should be on this weekend after all. Not conceding I was wrong on Gerrard just yet though....(wink).
-
I am no Billy Britain, but that Liverpool fans booing the anthem thing is so fucking plasticky wannabe revolutionary.
Ooh, look at us, aren't we controversial?
******.

What on earth made you think it would be like that?

It was like that the afternoon Phillip died when I went for a walk around the same places I did today (can't for life for me remember what stage of lockdown we were in April 2021).
I just assumed mourning period would include kids getting the day off school to watch all the endless tribute programmes and nation just grind to a halt for a day or two so it would have bank holiday feel but miles off that!
-
Kids getting the day off school? No chance.

People who think their right to watch a game is more important than the constitutional set up of the country. The sport expects people to sing to her before major fixtures.

People attending football matches has no effect on the constitutional set up of the country.

Personally I think either it all stays on or all gets cancelled.
This way smacks of football trying to do the right thing. I'm not that fussed and find it a bit surprising that people are so het up about it. Maybe it's because I wasn't due to attend mind.

Sky were scheduled to show German football match tonight and BT were to show a match from the French league. Neither of them were shown as far as I could see. Is there a total ban on showing this evil game of football??!!
-
The German game was on, saw a bit of it.
-
If the games were to continue it would have given millions of attendees the opportunity to pay their respect through the minutes silence.

So people can go to watch rugby union, golf, horse racing, the Great North Run, rugby league or cricket but not football? Why is the national sport the only one where going to a match wouldn't be respectful?

I genuinely thought it would be ghost towns for days after her death.
Really?
What on earth made you think it would be like that?
It was like that the afternoon Phillip died when I went for a walk around the same places I did today (can't for life for me remember what stage of lockdown we were in April 2021).
I just assumed mourning period would include kids getting the day off school to watch all the endless tribute programmes and nation just grind to a halt for a day or two so it would have bank holiday feel but miles off that!
We were, quite famously, in the "sit alone at your spouse's funeral" stage. Pubs and all nonessential retail were still shut when he died.

Hence the furore of the picture of Her Maj sitting alone while Johnson was living it up.

So whilst football is cancelled its not all doom and gloom. At least the British public can watch the Masked Dancer to ease their pain.

For what it's worth I think the earlier comments re the likely reaction of Liverpool supporters is a key factor in this decision. Instead they should have been read the riot act to and suitably punished in the event they transgressed.
-
In the circumstances I don’t think Liverpool fans would have done anything bad. Seems to me that, as always just like Brexit, instead of taking a little more time to get things done properly, the powers that be took the wrong decision. Let’s hope they don’t feel that any more matches should be put off. Oh well, it’s back to Serie A for me this weekend!!
-

I’m glad somebody has said it. This is surely the one and only reason they were quick to cancel football. Certain teams reaction to any tributes at football games would have unwelcome headline news. And we know what certain teams north and south of the border they would be.

The fixtures should have gone ahead with the reaction from all the grounds. If they wanted to show themselves up well happily put it out there for the whole world to see.

As mentioned on the golf thread. Wentworth resuming tomorrow.

Having slept on it, the decision for me was based on not trusting all football supporters. However, much the game has changed and the millions pumped into it, its still a working class sport at heart and us plebs can’t be trusted compared to those nice lot watching the rugger.

Concerns that the tributes wouldn't have been respected and the poor image it would have created were consodering factors in postponing the games.
So I'm not at Leicester today because of Liverpool.

Such an annoying decision. I had planned to leave on 70 minutes today to mark my respect.

What I dont understand is , If the reason for cancelling is the fans misbehaviour , when they do play surely they will have some form of tribute and they will play up anyway.

Reports casual staff in the dripping-with-wealth Premier League may not be paid as a result of the cancellations. That's really in the spirit of the thing. What she would've wanted, I'm sure.

Man City are paying all theirs. Fulham are paying the ones they directly employ. Some said they wouldn't pay, Liverpool and Arsenal were two I think, as they would be paid for the rearranged fixture.

I’m not sure I ever saw any evidence of her giving a toss about the well being of the poorest in society to be honest.

Of course they won't be. There's no guarantee that the same agency staff turn up on any given week, so who would they pay even if they wanted to? That's thousnds of the very lowest paid people in society not getting a day's pay today, because of some ridiculous notion of respect.
-

Liverpool away next weekend (and indeed given they're due to play Chelsea at half 4 next Sunday that's very likely to be cancelled I think due to close proximity to funeral).
Then with international break they wouldn't have home game until October when everyone will be moving on.
I know they've got a european home game in midweek but Uefa might not put it as jurisdiction you have to have a tribute/moment of rememberance.
It wouldn't have been the only factor but ultimately premier league not doing their job if they don't consider the optics when some in their fanbase booed the national anthem at two separate cup finals last season.
-
I've just had a quick look at Liverpool's fixtures. They've already got 9 games scheduled for October.

If Man City can work out how to do it then i'm pretty sure the other 19 could as well. If they wanted to.

And what about your average League 1 and 2 side whose owners aren't worth many billions of pounds and who struggle to get by on a weekly basis as it is?

Fortunately the Premier League is its own entity and its members are fully capable of doing this.

The point Monty made was about the Premier League. And your reply was also about the Premier League and how would they know who to pay.

The point stands. All they can do is pay the agency the usual weekly amount, and hope that they pass it on.

Which is something the other PL clubs could do if they wanted to. Which was my original point.
The people who would have been working in PL stadiums this weekend would already have been chosen by the agencies/clubs considering the games were only cancelled yesterday. So it would be pretty simple to pay them. If the clubs wanted to.
-
Just a bit of context, games were cancelled in 1901 and 1952 for the death off the monarch (Edward had the good grace to pop off post season 1910).
They weren't cancelled in 1952. We beat Portsmouth 2-0.
Apologies, got the dates mixed up. The gap in fixtures in early February must be for the FA Cup instead
-

The people who would have been working in PL stadiums this weekend would already have been chosen by the agencies/clubs considering the games were only cancelled yesterday. So it would be pretty simple to pay them. If the clubs wanted to.
But most clubs aren't going to do it, are they? So people ARE going to miss out on pay, in the Premier League and at every pretty much every other football club in the country. Why should people have to rely on whether or not a club is feeling generous or not, just because of some completely ridiculous notion of "it's what she would have wanted." Then there are all the other costs, like travel and lost revenue for hospitality etc. Also, I bet virtually every single Premier League club would have chosen to play this weekend, so why should they have to voluntarily donate money to cover staff wages, when it was the Premier League's decision?
-
Well we know most clubs aren't going to do it, a bunch of them have already said they aren't. Point is, they very easily could if they wanted to.
The rest of it has zero to do with what Monty said. I don't think the games should have been cancelled, but that's got nothing to do with what we originally replied to, same as League 1 and 2 clubs have nothing to do with it. The debate was, PL clubs choosing not to pay people. Them having to make that decision is a different debate.
-

Well the point I made is that thousands and thousands of people aren't going to be paid, and that point remains a cold, hard fact. There will also be no way of Man City knowing who the agency ends up paying.
-
It isn’t quite that easy.
The staff are casual labour for a third party company.
You’d be relying on that third party passing on that pay, to people to whom legally they owe no right to compensation like this
Then there’s all the other companies and traders who will have bought food supplies for today which is not going to be earning them a penny
It is a ridiculous exercise in pointless forelock tugging.
Especially when you look around and pretty much every other part of life, sporting or not, is carrying on as normal.
-

Ok Rafa.
-
So cricket and egg chasing is ok but not football? I don't get it and it really pisses me off. It would have been a great chance for thousands of fans to pay their respects but no only cricket and egg chasing are able to do that.
I know it's all been said before but I just need to vent.
-
I wonder when this round of fixtures will be rescheduled. There can't be many free midweeks to utilise in this cramped season when there's no European/domestic cup/international games.
-
I don't suppose it would be difficult for say Leicester and Villa to reschedule their game, the whole thing becomes more problematic though if an entire round of games has to be scheduled so as to enable all the 10 postponed games to take place over the course of a 2/3/4 day period.
-
Well we know we'll be free to play a rearranged fixture on FA Cup 4th round day.
-
I thought I saw somewhere it wouldn’t be until February.
-
They will wait until football is back up and running and quietly announce that they've scrapped League Cup Semi-Final Second Legs, and FA Cup replays. Or ask for the Champions League Final to be delayed by a week so they can put the end of the season back a week.
-
Boring afternoon. Just tried cleaning the limescale off the toilet. Even the Bundesliga game that Sky are showing later (well I presume they are showing it) doesn't look a great one. Schalke v Bochum, neither side has won a game this season.
-
I've just done a covid test for something to do. Still got it. Still bored.
-
I’m laughing my bollocks off reading some of the whingeing and whining on here
-
The cricket's on, you could watch that if you're bored?
-
Toilet limescale, Bochum and Covid tests. All grim as feck, but reckon I can top them. I'm studying for my next accountancy exam.

I've been reading about fracking. Boring as frack.
-
I’m in the garden having a cigar and a glass of wine watching my grandson crawl about
Heaven

Bopping around H&V as well obvs
-
I'm in the pub, it's like a mini close season, cricket silently playing on the screens to only passing interest, a smattering of regulars and the odd guffaw here and there.
The gaffer is grumbling about the football and boxing being called off and there it is, rain stops play.
-
Flamingo, we should have applied to play in the Bundesliga for this weekend and played either Schalke or Bochum…oh no on 2nd thoughts maybe not as neither of them has won a game this season so, we just know what generous Villa would do!!
-
"Here's Gabby Agbonlahor with his thoughts on the role of a constitutional monarchy in the modern world..."

Disappointed that this one moved. As knowing Viola Leicester will be in better form when it gets played. Need to win against Southampton now so more pressure on Gerrard.
I’m in Melbourne getting ready to get a plane to Auckland and wishing I had another hours Kip left. Watched an Aussie rules match in a pub last night instead of the footy.

Not for the faint hearted.

Well we know we'll be free to play a rearranged fixture on FA Cup 4th round day.
Don't be so defeatest, I think we're capable of winning at Old Trafford

Anyway, I'm having a lovely afternoon up the Night Owl with old friends

It’s not just the clubs and casual staff, many pubs near grounds make a fair amount of their revenue from match days.
I live near the QPR ground and the gaffer of my local, which is in a side street away from major footfall, told me that without football the pub isn’t viable. He counts on 15 Saturday 3pm kick offs a season. Customers from 11 -2.30ish, and again from 5-11pm with food sales on top of booze. Midweek night matches give him a shorter window, roughly 5-7.30pm and 1 hour after the game. Sunday matches fall off sharply compared to Saturday, and even early Saturday kick offs don’t have the same revenue as the 3pm games. He books extra staff for match days, and he kitchen increase their food orders from suppliers too.
His model is based on QPR covering his running costs for the year. Everything else is his profit, mainly made up of Wednesday - Saturday trade, with some live music and quiz nights etc. Today’s cancellation will definitely have dented his revenue.

Doesn't look like many of the SPL teams have done it except Rangers.
-
I wonder how much of it was really a case of "Let's blame an unpopular decision on the Scousers"?
-
I doubt it was the main reason. I really can't see them postponing hundreds of games just because Liverpool fans would have behaved like bellends.
