Excellent display. We were rampart first half and could afford to cruise in the second half.
Gabby, Benteke, Bacuna, Zogbia and Sinclair were all great in attack. TC and Delph controlled midfield.
Have to say that young lad who came on looked incredibly nervous before coming on. Perhaps a year or two too early for the boy, though he did have a go at Birdcutt and won a decent freekick. I'm glad to see Sherwood taking a few punts on these youngens.

Great job. We look like we'll stay up, and probably with some space to spare.

Sunderland are such a brilliant match up for our pacey attacking players, everytime we attacked today you thought we were going to score. Another club ruined by Martin O'Neill I'd suggest.

Don't want them to go down.

I'd be disappointed to only finish 17th now, we should be looking forward to the rest of the season given some of the fixtures and finish strongly in the league. The cup will look after itself.

But I think they're in trouble if either QPR or Burnley get into a run of form.  Although Connor Wickham is probably due to turn up in the last few games.

JOURNALISTS! The Villa played today. Here are some past participles you may need when writing about us in the active voice:

clobbered crushed defeated mauled overwhelmed pasted pummelled routed spanked trounced whipped battered birched  buried caned chastened chastised flagellated flogged licked murdered pelted pounded punished slaughtered tanned  trashed walloped.

I was a little concerned that we started without a genuinely defensive midfield player, but Timeh's gamble payed off big time. Excellent move for the first goal, and good controlled football thereafter. A startlingly decent stream as well.

It really beggars belief that some one could get as decent a bunch of players  as that and then teach them to play such insipid and winless football.

We are the opposite of Lamberts team, players running off the ball, playing with their head up, attacking, communicating and we look a lot fitter too.

We have come a long way in a few weeks- still work to do but a fantastic turn around.

Swansea have been a little iffy since Bony left, so a win next week would put us in a great position. I honestly can't see QPR getting much over 30 points, or Sunderland for that matter.

Right now though, we look a pretty good side too. Players are playing well who previously looked completely done at this level (Gab and Zog).

So far so good Timmy.

. On our way home on the A1m....fantastic performance in every manner..my 13 year old son's first league away day . He's buzzing

Charlie n'zogbia was sublime, at one point in the second half , they had two men stood off him as he manoeuvred his way up, far too scared to get close.

Sunderland are going to have to bite the bullet and pull the trigger on poyet.9 more points will do it..oh and two performances at wembley please Tim.

4 teams below us now, goal difference better than those, and a good chink of daylight points-wise, level on points with the two above us. Another good day all round for The Mighty Villa juggernaut.

I am rewatching the first half. Are we that good or Sunderland that bad?

The way we knocked it about, amazing.

Combination of both, Sunderland were an absolute disgrace as the co-commentator continually pointed out. Bit like the Hull game for us recently, their players seemed to give up long before the end. The farce with Larsson not coming out until 3 or 4 mins in the second half and then limping on summed them up. The likes of Bridcutt, Alvarez, Van Aanholt, Rodwell really looked miles out of their depth today. With the Johnson situation and fans and players clearly given up on Poyet then they are really in the sh*t. Could do worse than start playing Wickham up top again, thought he was decent when he played up the middle in the second half.

For us, we played superb attacking football in the first half. 4 goals but it should have been 6 really. Fair play to Sherwood, tactically I thought he was far too ambitious in his team selection but it worked brilliantly. We pressurised their keeper, defenders and midfielders high up the pitch and reaped the benefits from that. I was a little disappointed with us in the second half and they created some decent chances. But the football played in the first 45 mins will live long in the memory. Some turnaround in form from the likes of Nzogbia and Gabby whom I suspect 99% of fans wanted them gone out of the club by the end of Lambert's reign.

Guzan 6 - had little to do.
Bacuna 9 - would have been 10 only for yellow. Cafu like going forward today with two assists.
Okore 7 - far more solid today though Wickham caused a few problems
Clark 7 - solid again in the main. Has shown great character this season to turn his career around.
Lowton 7 - hardly a long term option at left back but has filled a huge hole for us manfully. Brilliantly blocked one cross in the first half
Nzogbia 8 - would have got long odds on a return to form from Charlie a few weeks ago, outstanding at times though did mess up some promising counter attacks by overplaying the ball
Cleverley 8 - very good in first half particularly, didnt see much from him after the break not that we needed to
Delph 9 - A different level to every other midfielder on the park, deserved a goal
Sinclair 6 - Missed sitter was a shocker but thought his play was very passive anyway. Better player at Villa Park so far for us
Gabby 9 - Showed good perseverance for the first but his second was Benzema like.
Benteke 9 - Took the piss out of them at times, for the rest of the season we need to get him one on one with defenders in the box like his second goal today. That goal was like the Benteke of old

Sanchez had a decent cameo at centre half. Very strong in the air. Weimann and Hepburn-Murphy didnt see too much of it. Westwood didnt impress me against West Brom so fair play to Sherwood for dropping him. Gil obviously needs to pick up his ideas.

Lowlight of the day, seeing that ar$ehole Roy Keane in the stand. Suspect Ciaran Clark has done enough to be starting for Ireland in a few weeks

Brown and O'Shea are years past their shelf life. Both appalling now, and they were only ever average at best. They must be close to the worst CH pairing in the top flight. I was delighted we took full advantage and exploited that, and also their lack of pace throughout the whole side.

Good points. I will say we did keep at it in the second half. 60 minutes in and the USA commentators have just said "4 goals up and Villa had 3 players in the box for that Bacuna cross, and Cleverly just outside it. This is attacking football".

Brilliant :)

I'll tell you what, Hutton's not getting back in the side. I am delighted for Bacuna. He was superb today. Who'd have thought that we have a RB making easy work of playing LB, and a right midfielder looking like Carlos Alberto.

The good thing about that is we have options depending on the type of game it is. Playing City away - Hutton starts for his solidity. Playing Swansea at home - chuck Cafu...er I mean Bacuna in.

Agreed, it was an amazing 45 minutes. Once again we show how much more we want it and teams just can't compete with our desire. Benteke and Gabby were lethal today, both seem to have their confidence back and are finally getting some decent service. Credit to Bacuna for his assists and N'Zogbia for that great run and pass to Gabby.

Sunderland are in a right mess. They looked okay until the first goal but thereafter a complete shambles. I'm struggling to see how they can recover from today, certainly the poorest side we've played this season. They might feel hard done by for not getting a penalty for the Clark hand ball or from hitting the post but overall they were completely disjointed and lacking any confidence. It would be a shame for their fans if they went down but on that performance they deserve it.

The league table is a more welcoming sight for us where for the first time this month I'm looking at the teams above rather than below.

Modest as I am, I have to take credit for us winning today.  Instead of sitting here praying for a result and getting depressed reading the match threads, I got off my fat arse and cut the grass which takes just about an hour.  After that I did my late neighbours which takes about an hour and a quarter but took me the best part of two hours today, all being the first cuts of the season.  I then went to do the grass of my elderly neighbours which usually takes a half hour as Jim has a ride-on mower but I couldn't get the feckin thing going, I flooded it.  The moral for me is: When the Villa are playing, get of your arse and do something.

Back on topic. That was a fabulous cross for Benteke's second goal.  What joy to see free-flowing football.  Sweet beer again tonight.

Insane having to hold in the emotions in the home end as our boys ran riot! The Sunderland fans were, ahem, not happy around us.

My lad, despite plenty of warnings about keeping quiet, first attack we get, NZog cuts inside and he shouts Shooooot!!!! He was good as gold though and loved the experience of his first away game.

Villa fans, as always, loud and proud. We joined in a bit at the end as everyone around us had gone, there was literally no-one left!!

I don't know that I have seen a side look such a shambles as Sunderland today. On and off the pitch they looked a complete mess. I am quite confident we really wanted to step it up we could have comfortably grabbed 2 or 3 more today. Scoring a fifth would have crushing to them and they would have opened up them again. Fully expect Poyet to be fired tomorrow.

Stitches in his ankle, the commentator said.

Which begs the question. How dumb a manager do you have to be to play a clearly injured player when you have replacements on the bench?

I mean the man was openly hobbling the rest of the game. Thats insane, risking his injury like that just so he might score a free kick.

I feel like we're Dickie Attenborough popping up from that tunnel in The Great Escape. It's almost too easy...

Er.......you do know how that film ends though............................. ;)

Yes, but Attenborough would probably have escaped if he had dumped the Scot earlier.

On BT Sport last night in their football chat show they were examining Man Ure's run in games.   One of the precious tosser pundits commented "the only bit of respite for LVG is the game against Aston Villa".   Don't hold your breath.

If we play like we did today, we'll beat them easily.

I don't know about easily, but we certainly won't be going there like we did in 2013 to help them win their league title. That was such an embarrassing example of white flag waving only topped by our disgraceful capitulation at Spurs.

If Lambert was still manager I would 100% agree with you. Mind you if Lambert was still manager we'd have been knocked out of the cup and we'd be discussing our away trips to Barnsley and Ipswich right about now on the back of a defeat on Wearside.

At half time, I couldn't quite believe what I had seen. Sunderland play narrow, but we cut them apart time and again with the pace and slick passing/movement down the channels. It was utterly ruthless and we were full of cutting edge.

Sunderland had three in the middle, but Bridcutt was sat so deep it was essentially 2-2 in there, where Delph and Cleverley completely bossed them. So positive and energetic, they were first to every second ball.

N'Zogbia murdered them, Bacuna was a full back who spent most of his time as a second right winger. It was brilliant to see us really push onto them.

At half time I couldn't help but remember the ghost of Mark Draper in a Leicester shirt, but I need not have worried. We very impressively kept the ball throughout, probed and worked them. Actually it reminded me of us under Lambert as we stroked it around in second gear.

A brilliant performance.

I thought Hull were the worst team I've seen this season & Lambert somehow managed to lose to them. If he was still in charge he would have handed the game to Sunderland today without a wimper. Thankfully we now have a manager who wants to win, rather than one who's so petrified of losing he never takes a risk. What's more, the players seem to believe in him too.

As well as we played today, Sunderland were truly awful. We have laid the foundations for survival, but there's a long way to go yet. A month ago we were dead & buried.

Martinez's reputation was always over hyped. Steve Bruce had a better league record than him at Wigan and Rodgers took Swansea up but many gave the credit to Martinez. You don't get scrutinized too much if you are likeable and at a smaller club. Now he is struggling at a big club where he has spent a fair few quid in fees and wages his media fan club has gone quiet.

They absolutely are in the shit, I agree.

I've never understood why, when most Villa fans have a respect for Everton that reflects the fact our histories are so similar, most of their fans seem to hate us. Why?

Anyway, fuck them, I would love them to go down.

They really have been stealthy in their descent to relegation, though. I'd barely noticed their descent to the shitty end of the league until recently. I think that is probably because Villa had made me want to stop ever looking at the league table, but even so, they are right in it.

I feel for the Sunderland supporters, I don't mind the club at all and it's only a few weeks since we were feeling similar pain, I hope they stay up.

Isn't it mad how things can change so quickly with football? After the Newcastle game I thought we were nailed on to go down and very pissed off with football in general and villa in particular. Since the league win against albion I've thought of very little else other than villa this last couple of weeks.

Got back in the house around 12.30am, thanks to having a very pleasant hour and a half at Bramley Working Mens Club in Rotherham.

Fantastic result. The difference for me is seeing players run off the ball and passing it forwards rather than standing still and passing sideways. It looks a totally different side.  Bacuna was superb in the first half and Gabby played like we know he can. No-one really had a bad game though. Let's hope we can keep it up.

There have been times when I have seen Man United come to Villa Park and they've pushed into us so much that their full backs end up looking like 3rd and 4th wingers and I have wished to see us take a game like that to somebody. That's what the first half was like. Bacuna and N'Zogbia could have been arrested for murdering Sunderland.

The second goal summed it up for me.
Okore had the ball deep in our half and was facing Guzan. 4 weeks ago he would have passed that back to Guzan.
Instead, he turned, knocked it to Clark, who sent a ball over the top for Gabby to smash home.
No way on gods earth would we have looked to be that positive under TSMII.

My son actually said when we going to watch villa , the first time since they bored him 1 2 against Newcastle .
It had been punishment for the poor lad.

Its great to feel like this again about villa.

Full credit to tim and the staff.

ditto Juan,

my egg chasing son, actually asked if Villa where home next week, my cup runneth over.

Love the Villa

Yep. There is no chance a Lambert side would score 4 against Sunderland.
Yes quite. OK we did well against a poorly motivated team but there are some ridiculous comments here about Lambert.

I think the point isn't that Lambert didn't do it, it's that one of his Villa sides this season wouldn't be able to. Lambert went from being every bit as adventurous as Sherwood to a reincarnation of McLeish.

A bit annoyed Burnley won. We still need to do plenty of work.

Sensible comment in amongst the celebrations. We are still only 3 pts above the bottom 3 - but at least there are 3 teams below us who have a lot more to worry about than us on current form.

I noticed that one, too. I wonder if he got a shout, or the voice inside his head suddenly reminded him of what they've clearly been working on in training these last few weeks.

Enjoying the day as we should BUT...
as pointed out in the escape thread we HAD to win here or at Newcastle to hit the magic target points.

This means we still got to win 3 at home. Thats very achievable with the new energy and positivism Sherwood bringing to the squad.
But there is still  not a lot of room to deal with bad luck, blind refs and freak accidents that seems to always befall our beloved club.

Yesterday I almost thought we might get away with just 6 or 7 points then Burnley ruined that hope. We still need 9 more to relax a bit.

Agree with 9. 37 will do but don't have to win 3.  2 wins and 3 draws from 9 should be possible.

We now have to get at least one point more than Hull, one point less than Sunderland, two points less than Burnley, five points less QPR and/or 8 points less than Leicester. Any three out of those five things happening will see us safe. We have better form, more confidence and better players than all those teams. I'm not worried any more.

Every one of those teams has games against big sides, writing them off as not even worth turning up is what McLeish and Lambert have done for the last 4 years, I suspect we will see a very different approach this tie round and I wouldn't be surprised to see 2-3 points from those games.

Two of the goals, edge of our own box to the back of their net, all along the floor, in seconds. One, "over the top" and run in behind. One, cross-field pass with a back-post cross and header. Good positive mix, ya just dunno where we're gonna get ya from!

I think our chances of getting something from those three games have improved dramatically after yesterday's performance. Also, we have somehow managed to do only as badly as the teams around us while having that dimwit Lambert in charge, so in my view it's unlikely that with a new manager we're going to do worse to the extent we'd have to, to go down.

There's a summary of who each of the relegation battle here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31892314

It seems to me that Hull have by far the toughest run-in overall - Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are their next 3 games; and also have Man U, Southampton, Burnley and Spurs to play.

QPR also have a tough run-in, I think Leicester are already down (or at least won't catch us), and I think Sunderland will need a new manager bounce not to get sucked in.

I think the equivalent of 9 points will do for us, but our tough April and the postponement of the QPR game, will probably mean it's going to be squeaky all the way to May.

On current form, it's possible for us to get something out of each of our home games (Swansea, Everton, West Ham, QPR, Burnley); but will be tough to get much out of our away games (Man U, Spurs, Man C, Southampton).

I agree. Even in Benteke's tweet he mentioned 9 cup finals so I don't think anyone is taking anything for granted. All we have is 6 very valuable points and a lot of momentum but one bad game and it can all feel very different. I hope that not only do we play 9 brilliant cup finals but end the season with 11 cup final wins as opposed to 9!

Whilst we are still not out of the woods and will rarely meet such inept opponents, it is a pleasure to see things such as players moving off the ball with purpose and with a forward momentum, players willing to pass it forward quickly and to feet, players taking opponents on and beating them, composure in the penalty area with players calmly "passing" the ball into the back of the net rather than swinging wildly at the ball, and players who had previously clearly been going through the motions showing enthusiasm and commitment.  And width - I'd almost forgotten what it was like to see Villa wingers and overlapping fullbacks bombing down the flanks, and as everyone except Lambert could have told you, Benteke is beginning to reap the benefits.  The first goal yesterday went from Guzan to Benteke to back of the net in 5 crisp, precise passes, three of them one-touch.  It was like Alan Partridge's liquid football.  Under Lambert we'd have passed it sideways for 5 minutes.   In many ways it's just simple "tweaks" that every man and his dog bar one could see were required, and to Sherwood's credit it hasn't taken him long to introduce the blindingly obvious.  But so far, what a damning indictment of his predecessors managerial ability.

Despite the fact they will stay up (which is always an achievement for them) and wouldn't have won the cup anyway we have managed to totally spoil their season by beating them twice. Their only thought and ambition now will be trying to finish at least one place above us.

Assuming we go on and finish the job of staying up, we and they will know that the catalyst was playing them at home. They had a chance to inflict a huge blow which could have been detrimental and they didn't take it. They can keep hold of that memory.

Arguably NSFW. but then they did show it on TOTP and that back in the day.
Wunderbar or fair pair as we say in Walmley. Oh I miss those days of lads holidays in Mallorca, late 80s.

Me and my missus split up on Christmas Day '87. I was such a little nobhead then.

I got with one of my exes on Christmas Eve '87. It was the beginning of a ten year nightmare (apart from two nice kids). Thanks for reminding me of that.

Should have watched Europe's Top 10! It was great for videos you never normally saw.

The weird thing is we had the early incarnation of Sky in Milton Keynes in the 80s on cable (called Sky Channel) and it was almost non stop European pop music. I can't believe I haven't seen that before as a result, as they didn't care what they played.

Anyway back to the match. I feel a bit sorry for Poyet and wouldn't be surprised if he goes today.  John O'Shea's awful mistake against Gabby and then making no attempt to rectify the mistake suggests he has lost the team. Potent had the look of a rabbit in headlights after the match.

Brown and O'Shea might be the most bobbins CH pairing in the league right now. Both are well past it, and were only ever average at best.

Up until yesterday both were having relatively solid seasons. Harsh on both to be honest, Brown's career has been destroyed by injuries. O'Shea was a very useful utility player for Man United. Both were probably their sides respective best players in the CL finals of 2008 (Brown) and 2009 (O'Shea). Both have done pretty well for Sunderland generally since they arrived.

The money their last few managers have wasted on a load of flops both on the pitch and sideline is the reason they are struggling. Rodwell (10m), Bridcutt (3m), Buckley (2.5m), Altidore (8.5m), Giaccherini (6.5m), Johnson (10m), Fletcher (12m), Graham (5m), N'Diaye (3m), Wickham (8m). Their squad is really poor and unless someone like Wickham can finish the season strongly then they look in serious trouble.

Keane, Bruce, O'Neill, Di Canio and Poyet have a lot to answer for. Bruce was struggling by the end but perhaps should have been given more time. The other four wont manage in the top division again.

Its a disgrace, considering the players we have in comparison, that we are only two points above them.

To be fair they both had a good game against us in the nil nil draw at VP last season. They played with their heads like the seasoned pros they are but the sands of time seem to have caught up with them. How did Wes do on Family Fortunes on Sunday night? I think his family were up against Jamelia's.

Completely agree.  I said similar when Redknapp left QPR.  It didn't matter who they got in they're absolutely awful apart from Austin, where as if we got someone halfway competent we'd probably be Ok as our squad, although not top quality should be plenty good enough for 12-8th and anything approaching that sort of form should see us safe.

You can't polish a turd and QPR and Leicester are absolute turds squad wise.

I don't think Sunderlands squad is all that terrible.  Defoe and Fletcher are limited but both can score goals, Wickham is a decent target man, Larsson is a good free kick taker, O'Shea and Brown are better than they looked at the weekend and Pantilimon is a decent keeper.  It's the midfield that's dire, with Johnson out indefinitely they've got no creativity (far less than us even though it's been our weakness as well) and they don't even have players that can offer more if used better, Cattermole is their best option, which is pretty damning.
