Albion came to play for the 0-0. After we'd gifted them the goal, it became the 1-0.

They were absolutely without ambition beyond the long ball over the top for Gayle to latch on to. They were disgracefully short on attacking intent, I thought.

More than that, though, I am struggling to recall the last time i saw such a prolonged example of shit-housery as they provided today. Time wasting from the start, players throwing themselves to the floor for long periods, dirty bastards who clattered into Jack for the first time after less than 60 seconds of the game, it was exactly like watching a Pulis side.

By far the biggest factor for the second leg (other than us winning the first, of course) will be the absence of Gayle. He does look threatening, he's definitely a top flight quality player, and he's not going to be there.

That'll be the end of his loan period at Albion now.

I found myself wondering if he was just ensuring he could fuck off on holiday earlier than might otherwise be the case when he went through Steer.

Oh and shout out to their fans, who I thought were pathetic, amongst the worst away fans we've seen at Villa Park this season, barely a peep out of them.

Im convinced Dr.Tony Xia was driving up and down outside the Trinity Road stand about an hour before kick off, which I found quite bizarre.

And I was sat a few seats away from David Bradley, aka Walder Frey from Game of Thrones, who I now know is a huge Villa fan.  He was joining in with the "Fuck the Albion" chants with more gusto than I imagine would be good for a man of his years.

But I thought that was common knowledge and everyone who has ever visited this site knew that?  ::)

I had no idea I'm afraid.  Can't say that I've seen his name mentioned if I'm honest.

Never mind all that.  How long did it take you to get served at half time?

Half time? I'm still in the queue for a pre-match pint.

It was very nice of their fans to join in with the "Fuck the albion" chant, I thought. Something you just don't get enough of in "modern" football.

Did my ears deceive me or did I hear the strains of KRO on about 55 minutes very briefly coming from the stripey throstle ******?

I think we can be way too critical of our own sometimes.

After we gifted them a goal they sat back and "parked the bus", along with wasting time and fouling at every opportunity. That's hard to combat after a difficult season of, mostly, playing catch up. But each and every one of our players gave everything for the shirt today. Were there errors? Yes. But there was no shirking of responsibility, and I'm proud of what the team and manager achieved today.

Well done all. Let's finish the job on Tuesday.👍

I've only seen the highlights posted on here. By the sound of it Albion must have hired Steve Bruce for a bit of playoff consulting work. Good. It's his specialism.

I was glad to get the win, given that we weren't looking that likely to score despite having so much possession.

McGinn had an anonymous game but I hope it was a blip. With their formation of 3 centre backs we tended to play into their hands and poor crosses and wasted short corners didn't help. We needed to have a higher tempo and drive and run at them far more, as El Ghazi did.
Thank goodness for Conor and his left foot; he gets slated more often than not but he comes up with some great strikes and delivery.

Well that was very enjoyable. Interesting to see their Manager has obviously taken notes from when Pulis was there, god they were dull. We stuck at it and fully deserved the win, Albion were out on there feet at the end after spending the afternoon chasing the ball, shame we couldn’t nick a third.

A point about the ref. That c*** made sure he was the star of the show with his ambling round the pitch. He had more of an effect on the game that anyone, and after 2 mins when he pulled play back after Jack had been fouled, but didn’t book their player, just set the tone for the rest of the game.

As he gave us a penalty, refused them what looked to me to be a penalty, booked Gayle for time wasting and later sent him off, I'd say the referee was ok today.

Indeed I thought he was ok. Seems a bit harsh to call him that.
