He’s fucking terrible. I’d sell him tomorrow.

And yet he's our captain. What must the manager be on?

God knows. I said it was a bad decision by Gerrard when it was announced.

39 touches, 10 less than Emi1.
13 turnovers
19 completed passes
36’ Yellow

Where’s the super gone?

And by all accounts bolted straight down the tunnel at full-time yesterday.

For all the criticism of McGinn's appointment, and what he does and doesn't bring to the role, not one of us sees him in the changing room before and during games. Not one of us sees him on the training pitch day in day out. Not one of us watches him engaging with his teammates one-on-one when things are going well or badly.

It might turn out to be a terrible appointment, but there is little reason to believe it was done for any other reason other than "he was the best candidate for the job" based on the above observations of the management team.

People were slamming Mings last season, insisting we needed an upgrade in defence, or that he had to improve.  So if he's NOT the captain, who realistically could it otherwise be?  Assuming you don't want a keeper as your on-field captain.

First and foremost he has to put in better performances for the team, because if he doesn't, he'll get dropped.  We know he's capable of better. We've seen it.

Yes, he was great in the championship. How often in the PL? People were pointing out his bad form in our first season up, then he got injured and became the messiah.

I think he was probably one of if not our best performers in those first few months of the first season back, then he got that horrible injury against Southampton. I don’t really think he’s been the same player since.
The captaincy just over complicates everything, if we do manage to get another midfielder in, it shouldn’t automatically be Ramsey that drops out, but it’ll just seem controversial ‘dropping’ the captain. If pre Carlos injury, Mings wasn’t going  to be an automatic starter, it should of just gone to Martinez. Loris does fine at Spurs. It'll just be an unnecessary distraction.

It’s a tough one. What is captain material?

What a fan wants may be way different to what a team wants.

I guess it how the manager wants a player to lead.

Some shout & organise. Others lead by their performance.

McGinn doesn’t do either

He's not played well since January in the Cup at Man United. He gives the ball away so easily.

Sometimes the ball is at his feet and he still doesn’t know where it is. Ends up bending over and going round in circles.

I ho0e whoever takes his place on Tuesday has a blinder so he has to be left out. The midfield conundrum will not be sorted whilst he is in the side

Let’s not rewrite things here. John McGinn has paid for himself many, many times over. He’s played some superb games for us. But as we aimed higher he has shown that he’s not at the level we need. A brilliant squad player to have but he should not be starting and not captain. I thought it might elevate him but he just doesn’t have the quality.

John McGinn: The grease monkey whose Aston Villa fee ‘was an absolute disgrace’
By John Nicholson

Little snippet from the article
'McGinn is the WD40 that oils the wheels of The Machine. He is the grease monkey. He is the boiler room which you stoke to deliver the goods.

While his 12 assists in the last three seasons are decent, they don’t document his role in creating the assists, often being the fourth or third pass in the move, but making the most important. There must be a deep cut stat for that – ‘expected forward progressions’, perhaps.'

'it seems that Steven Gerrard understands how important John is to Aston Villa, giving him the captain’s armband this season, saying: “He is universally respected, he has been around the club for a long time, the fans adore him and everyone around Bodymoor (the club’s training ground), everyone around Villa Park, have got major respect for John, his peers have, he plays with consistency, he is my type of player and that is a few reasons why I decided to go with him.”

You can’t say fairer than that, can you?

At his best, he is the fountain from which all things flow. For those of us who saw him on the way up, it’s something of a vindication.

He’ll be 30 by the end of his current contract, at which point it’d be good to see him return to Scotland. I don’t know if Celtic hold a bit of a grudge about him because their bids were rejected, but he plays the kind of football that Celtic like to play and it would be an obvious move for this excellent midfielder'

Yep funnily enough I was having the same conversation with a couple of players I play 6-a-side with tonight. Their perception was that Villa fans  think he’s brilliant at everything he does.

Thats been happening to me regards perceptions by non villa followers over this weekend in similar ways. This was in regards Gerrard leaving out Coutinho and why we obviously lost the match to Palace because of not selecting him.

It pains me to say it but he looks finished as a top tier footballer. Struggled all night to get into the game vs League 1 opponents. Just a shadow of the player he once was. It wasn’t a good display by the team but he has stood out for just how much worse he was than the rest.

He is good enough at this level but I’ve absolutely no idea what’s happened to him. Sad to see but I live in hope.
