Very frustrating but still up to 3rd. Should’ve been so much better.
-
Massively frustrating dropping 2 points when we should have been 3 or 4 up.
Next up away to spurs and liverpool ffs. We needed to win this really
-
Problem with wanting to stay in the top 4 is you have to win pretty much every week. Poor performance today and Bournemouth deserved the point.
-
Sloppy that. Once we went in front we shouldn’t be letting it slip.
-
Missed too many chances and gave away too many daft fouls. This is why we aren’t title challengers yet. You can’t drop 2 points in the last seconds against mid table sides like that.
-
Ceded control last ten minutes. Whether’s that fatigue or trying to defend what we had I don’t know. Not going to blame just Barkley as it was the third or fourth in a series of stupid fouls. Grrrrrr
-
Our finishing was much better last season and the season before. We have wasted a lot of chances this season. We'd be top if we could sort that
-
Just a moment. Didn’t liverpoool lose at home to Forest a few weeks ago? These beat Arsenal last week.
-
Are game management today after going ahead was awful. Just needed to keep the ball and not switch off. Really fucking annoying as completely unneccessary drop of points.
Completely are own fault we should have scored more than 1, and should be able to keep out the likes of bournemouth.
-
We're one point worse off than last season.
We need to win the next two to be ahead at 11 games.
This and Ipswich were definitely two points dropped.
-
McPhee will be in for another bollocking.
We just had to concentrate for a few more seconds. How Evanilson got to that header before any defender I'll never know.
-
Utterly unprofessional in last 15 mins and to be honest, pretty crap overall in the second half. An upgrade on right back is absolutely essential if this club genuinely wants to challenge. However, every team has off days and we very nearly got away with that.
-
A very frustrating game not to win.
Dominant first half but couldn't score. Second half was building pressure without creating a huge amount.
Then scrapped a goal out and just happy to get a 1-0 before deciding to just foul any Bournemouth player that moved in injury time instead of actually keeping the ball.
Disappointing. Not winning enough home games to be sure of replicating last season currently so need to change that narrative in next two months.
-

Well that’s not, if you want to win the title maybe. Top 4? It’s not that tough. We do need to get more ruthless though.
-
Just couldnt keep the ball last ten minutes and I thought Kamara coming on was going to get us the win, bournemouth wanted it more I thought . With the Cash tackle and Bailey ' handball ' I thought we had got away with the 3 pts , the defending for their goal was terrible.
Some players flat but some great football at times especialy first half. Their goalie MOM
-
I believe the phrase rhymes with "clucking bell".
We weren't quite on it today, and against teams like this that are organised and well coached this is what happens if you're not on it. We gave possession away too often after taking the lead. I wonder too if Unai would have made as many subs if it weren't for all the yellow cards.
-
BTW that was definitely a handball from Bailey and we were so lucky that wasn't given as a pen.
-
Giving a team 3/4 free kicks in the same position, within 5 minutes, with our lack of ability to defend set pieces was asking for trouble. Our subs made us a lot worse for a change.
Massively frustrating and feels like a defeat.
-
Grrrrrrr.
They're a good team but that's frustrating as fuck. Could see it coming when we stopped being able to keep possession and hacked them down at every opportunity.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
-
BTW that was definitely a handball from Bailey and we were so lucky that wasn't given as a pen.
It wasn't, as accidental as it gets.
-
BTW that was definitely a handball from Bailey and we were so lucky that wasn't given as a pen.
He wasn’t even looking at the ball and just missed his header. It’s never a pen.
-
Needed a couple of wise heads in the last ten minutes to slow it down and win fouls, not concede them. Unfortunately McGinn was off the pitch, he's probably not a 90 minute player for us no more.
Bournemouth kept threatening and deserved it. Disappointing that Emery couldn't change the flow. As someone said, on here yesterday, Iraola is possibly our next manager. Decent audition from him.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
What exactly did he do wrong?
The Bailey 'handball' was far more of a handball than Cash's, so feels like we got away with that. Overall that feels like two points absolutely thrown away.
-
Every time they made a move to get a cross in from the right-hand side we seemed to foul them, thereby giving them a chance to get more men forward and more time to get a better cross in. We should have just let them get the crosses in from open play while under pressure from defenders.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.

Quite. He had Semenyo in his pocket until needlessly fouling him. When that free kick came to nothing I thought we’d done it, but no.
-
To be honest second half we werent great. First half we were excellent at times, but didnt take our chances.
Second half we struggled and the game got scrappy - but still should have scored at least 1 more.
In the league we create plenty of chances, but miss too many of them, and are too easy to score against.
-
We played some nice, sharp stuff today, albeit without the killer final ball or finish. On another day we’d be 2/3 up and coasting.
As good as some of our performances have been this season, we’ve also spent a lot of time looking like we aren’t getting out of 2nd gear.
-

We deliberately gave it away as we elected to go long ball and sit on what we had. Not sure why we did that, but we lost our shape with all the subs on.
-
I find it really odd that we are a possession based team but once the goal went in we just went long giving the ball back to Bournemouth at every opportunity. Martinez never went short once after getting the lead. Same last week at Fulham. I'm assuming this is coming from the coaching team but for the life of me I can't understand the reasoning. Keep possession and we win that easily.
-
Rogers needs to start putting these chances away
-

It was a poor result, but i'd give Unai at least the Spurs game
-
Easily the better side by a country mile all game.not buying all this Bournemouth deserved their point, they were shite and reliant on their keeper.
Those last 6 minutes were fucking brainless. We comfortably beat their press all game, so why are we knocking it long? They've created nothing from open play and not had an attempt on target second half, so why are we diving in, with men on the cover, to give them the percentage ball into the box? Stay on your fucking feet.
Emery will go mental. 2 points dropped.
-
Very frustrating and 2 points dropped, but there was a time when letting in injury time 'sickeners' seemed to be a regular occurrence. The last year or so it's been us getting the late goal, so we just have to take this one on the chin. I said before these 3 games that 5 points would be a decent return, so it's up to the team to get a win and draw in the next two.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
They where driving down his side all afternoon especially after we scored. Unai did nothing about it. Not first match this happen, cant understand Unai dont see it. IMO has been costing us for long time. That said the whole team wasnt set up properly for defending 1-0 at home, we should have been much more cynical holding the ball not rushing to attack when got the ball, putting on some CB late on and the like. Letting in goals like today and at Ipswich coupled with not being clinical in scoring make us second best to the top teams. We are joy to watch going forward though.
-
We have dropped some points sloppily this year. Could be the European demands, not sure, but we need to be sharper with our chances. Next two games are tough.
-
Massively disappointing to lose two points to a 96th minute equaliser, but at the end of the day, their goalie was MotM, which says a lot that even on a day when we weren't great, they still needed their goalie to play a blinder to keep them in it.
It's going to look bad on paper, but I didn't think we played THAT badly, particularly in the second half. Not great, but certainly not a bad performance, and if we'd seen out the win no one would say it was undeserved.
We just need to make sure we turn up properly in the next two games...
-
Gutted, but Bournemouth are no mugs, still only 1 defeat, but next 2 weeks will be huge.
-
Meh, very very annoying, these will happen over a season. And they are pretty good Bournemouth, so that's the way it goes.
Cash though...man, this is starting to look like a habit.
-
It’s now our fixtures start to get tough, it’ll be interesting to see if it drives us to raise our level.
-
Bournemouth looked a limited side who didn't lay a glove on us, until we gave them free kicks in the last 6 minutes, because we decided we no longer wanted to pass our way through their weak press as we had done for the previous 90.
Emery will strip fucking paint off the dressing room for that. You can't be dropping too many points at home like that.
-
13 bookings in a match. Jokes.
-
A disappointing end to a really badly refereeing performance. 47 yellows and 3 reds in 6 games shows this referee to be incompetent.
He made rod for his own back. The game was not a dirty game a couple of stupid fouls which could have been dealt with a talking too. A normal ref would have probably given maybe 3 yellow cards today.
The Villa performance wasn’t bad. We need the same energy from both team and crowd as we have in the CL games. Morgan looked knackered both mentally and physically and he wasn’t the only one.
It’s tough but they need to be motivated at the same level to play Bayern or Bournemouth. We all knew how that would end. At one time we all thought we would lose that to a spawns one nil.
-
I think we lack a bit of composure / good decision making at both ends of the pitch. Watkins and Duran are doing well, but Bailey is off form, and Ramseys and Rogers are great but there decision making needs improvement. Really we should have had this won in the first 30 mins today
At the other end - we should be able to knock the ball around at the back for the last 10 minutes rather than resorting to that. So frustrating - particularly as we have a full squad - albeit with some coming back. Hopefully it doesnt cost us in the long term but there will be times this season when we will have excuses for dropping points, but today and Ipswich werent those games.
-

Exactly as I see it. Frustrating but it’s a fortunate point for them.
-
McPhee will be in for another bollocking.
We just had to concentrate for a few more seconds. How Evanilson got to that header before any defender I'll never know.
Cash got a few for it and will get a roasting in the dressing room. Emery and McPhee were going mad at him to get into position before they took that free kick, Konsa was having a go at him after it and then McPhee was after the final whistle.
-

Agree it was a sloppy conclusion to a game we should have won.
We’re in an interesting spot, we’re third but have only played 2 of the current top 10. The coming weeks will be big. You look at our squad and it’s fantastic we need to start delivering complete performances in the league, and getting rid of these sloppy phases.
-
Felt we pretty much dominated the whole game but we weren’t clinical in front of goal and paid the price for it at the end. At no point did I think Bournemouth were good enough to put us under any serious pressure and we were comfortable defending their token attempts at attacking throughout…until the last few seconds of the game.
Side note: that was in no way a dirty game, and the ref dishing out 13 yellow cards was pathetic.
-
Ceded control last ten minutes. Whether’s that fatigue or trying to defend what we had I don’t know. Not going to blame just Barkley as it was the third or fourth in a series of stupid fouls. Grrrrrr
Agreed, we were falling over the line last 10 mins or so. Duran and Bailey were a liability in that time when we needed them to hold the ball up. We gave away some amount of stupid freekicks in dangerous areas and no surprise the goal came for it. That last change from Emery didn't work either, Barkley was playing well in midfield but was lost further up. So frustrating, their keeper made some blinding saves, Duran missed a sitter. But Bournemouth were always in the game I thought. Motm was Ramsey, thought he was excellent.
-
I wonder if this sees the end of the cash right back experiment. ;)
-
We're one point worse off than last season.
We need to win the next two to be ahead at 11 games.
This and Ipswich were definitely two points dropped.
One point worse off but played harder games. The next four are toughies
Keep clean sheets in the league ffs !! This is whats costing us dearly
-
It feels to me like we have a much stronger squad this year compared to last season. Equally, however, I think our best eleven from September, October, November and December 2023 would beat us right now.
I don't know if it's a case of us not quite 'clicking' the same way we did 12 months ago or if, as some of us suspected, both Luiz and Diaby were real quality players to lose and possibly brought something to the pitch that has been difficult to replace. Edit, for example, it's the kind of game today where Luiz would pop up with a goal and maybe Diaby would have a burst of pace that could change the game.
I'm very happy overall, especially with us being so hard to beat, but it would be great to replicate that unbelievable form of 2023.
-
It doesn't matter how many points we had at this stage last season, we're fighting this campaign.
-
Awful finishing and atrocious game management last 15 mins have cost us dearly. Yes their keeper made saves but they were "TV camera" saves as we put efforts in his comfort zone instead of hitting either side of him . We will just have to go and win at Spurs now. Rest them all for palace and play the fringe players and kids .
-
I thought their penalty shout could have gone either way. Always seems to be Cash.
-

We look worse defensively than last year and i agree we are missing diaby and luizs goals/assists. Dont think we have really replaced diaby. Zero league goals for bidace so far and baileys the same.
-
Rogers finishing will be brought into question soon unless he starts converting .
-
I thought their penalty shout could have gone either way. Always seems to be Cash.
Cash always seems to frantic or hectic, and the fact that he was chugging a Red Bull in the tunnel before the game probably doesn't help. Cash the berserker.
-
We were less than one inch from being deservedly 1-0 up and would likely have pushed on from that, and Duran missed the target when given a free hit by the penalty spot - these are things that on another day go our way and we win 3-0. I'm disappointed, and a bit annoyed at the defending for their goal at the death, but I can also see it wasn't a bad performance.
We need to start being more clinical, hopefully starting with the next two games.
-
I was furious, still am, that we used added time to give them set piece practice. Totally needless free kicks we were giving away.
-
The game just highlights the inconsistencies with referees. Every player who got booked today deserved it but I can guarantee his next match some leeway will be shown.
As for the match, why are we still trying to score with a minute to go? Waste time anyway possible without giving away dangerous fouls.
Barkley you had one fucking job.
-
Two points dropped.
-

Wonder if that means Konsa at right back next match?
-
Rogers finishing will be brought into question soon unless he starts converting .
Thought he looked very laboured today and missed a great chance first 10 mins. Unsurprising really as he had played every minute until today.
Bournemouth stayed in the game and were neat without really threatening. Their tactic to stop Pau having the ball and allowing Konsa to have it was pretty smart as we lacked the tempo he brings on the ball..
Those last 10 minutes defending a lead were probably our worst under Emery. We didn’t put any passes together at all.
-
Think it starts with Ramsey trying to play Barkley in and losing possession instead of just holding it up and going backwards or towards the corner flag. Silly and avoidable
-
Frustrating.
-
3 points against ipswich man utd and Bournemouth simply is not good enough if they want top four again
-
If you can't win it don't lose it. One more point currently third. Onwards and upwards!!
-
Unai's post match interview:
"For me the referee was fantastic today"
I hope he was being sarcastic!
-
Just annoys me after the Ipswich game to see such bad game management again. I know these things happen etc etc.
I know things are great, I know were third etc etc. But we have had a very easy start to the season, and I know were some way off the standards of the arsenal and man citys of this world, but at some point well have a tough run, injuries etc so dropping points when we dont need to is something we need to avoid. As ultimately 4th and 5th places will go to the club that manage to do that the least.
I think we lack a bit of leadership at times on the pitch, and a bit of quality / form in the final third beyond watkins and duran.
-
I wonder if this sees the end of the cash right back experiment. ;)
Should have ended it after we scored in all seriousness.
Carlos for Cash and the dreaded Konsa to RB would have ushered in yet another clean sheet.
-
It doesn't matter how many points we had at this stage last season, we're fighting this campaign.
#
True but the previous season is always just about the best benchmark against which to measure how a season is going
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
Is this a joke?
-
Should have seen the game out after three subs combined to give us the lead, then lost composure and kept giving the ball away the last 15 minutes. We played well for large parts of the game with JJ causing them plenty of problems, but we need to start taking more of our chances.
-
Bitterly disappointing result. Some great stuff at times, but we have to be more ruthless
-
Unai's post match interview:
"For me the referee was fantastic today"
I hope he was being sarcastic!
He's being his usual gentlemanly self.
-
I have to keep reminding myself, it was a draw, we’re up to third.
If Liverpool beat Arsenal tomorrow, we’ll stay there.
I can imagine the players and Unai probably feel even more frustrated at the result than we do. Hope this means that they all come out swinging, as it were, v Palace and Spurs next week.
-
Unai's post match interview:
"For me the referee was fantastic today"
I hope he was being sarcastic!
He's being his usual gentlemanly self.
He was.
The ref though was abysmal i felt today. Booking our players for minor things het Bournemouth were doing worse at times and he wasnt even giving a freekick
-

He just gave himself nowhere to go. I think there were six or seven fouls in the first half hour and he booked 5 players.
-
I was on edge from the moment we scored because it never felt enough.
That’s because we just don’t do clean sheets, and we flipping obliged.
And why we were unable to keep hold of the ball for more than 5 seconds at a time in the six minutes of injury time will forever be a mystery.
-
Think it starts with Ramsey trying to play Barkley in and losing possession instead of just holding it up and going backwards or towards the corner flag. Silly and avoidable
Yes we were saying the same thing at the time. That was poor game management.
As has been said, considering their press had only really given Onana some issues, I've no idea why we went long all the time from the back in the last 10 minutes or so. It must have been an instruction from Emery though?
They focused all their late attacks down our right but Bailey barely tracked back to help when he came on and was weak in the challenges. Cash didn't get much help.
Tavernier has a good delivery and it was a good finish but it was all so unnecessary having got into a deserved lead and controlled the game for long periods. Bournemouth had little threat from open play.
The 13 yellow cards in the game was absurd. However, by the end, the referee had raised his low bar and was failing to book players.
-
Very frustrating
They had a strategy of playing balls behind Cash all game
I thought we looked less solid without Carlos.
I don’t think Duran and Watkins can play together.
Disappointed Ramsay didn’t just hold on to the ball at the end when he had the chance.
As usual amazed at the number of season ticket holders leaving early when we are 1-0 up.
-
Very, very frustrating. It felt like a 'nearly game' all game and then we got the goal finally. Thought we'd see the game out from there but game management was woeful. Ramsey playing an overhit forward pass straight to their goalie in the 93rd minute needlessly ceding possession summed it up.
Got to get more streetwise really.
On another note, can Watkins please bulk up a bit. He simply could not hold the ball up and got outmuscled throughout by their centre halves. Needs some strengthening work big-time.
Feels like a loss.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
Is this a joke?
Thought he struggled towards the end of the game. From my view in the North Stand, he looked lucky not to give a penalty away. I thought that Carlos would come on for him, with Konsa shifting to RB in the closing stages.
-
The subs were hit and miss. We just couldn't keep the ball in the last 10 or so minutes. Just needed to see it out with possession of the ball. Gave it away cheaply too often in stoppage time. A waste of two points
-
You win some, you lose some.
That's what today felt like.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
Is this a joke?
It’s the internet, people are allowed to have opinions that differ from your own.
-
Cash played well today.
Onana wasn't very good.
Rogers was quiet, as was Watkins.
Ramsey would have done more when he was getting forward in that inside left channel.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
Is this a joke?
He's the new scapegoat
-
Well that was a sickener, conceding to pretty much the last touch of the game. Nobody will be more annoyed that Unai that we threw away two points when we should have had the game in the bag. Last 15 mins were awful.
-
Sooner Cash is sold the better.
Is this a joke?
He's the new scapegoat
No he isn’t. I rarely if ever criticise an individual but for me Cash isn’t a bad player all of a sudden I just think we’ve outgrown him and we need an upgrade at right back.
-
Once Watkins went off nothing was sticking up front . This is the downside of Duran. We also lost all physicality in midfield once Rogers and McGinn went off . After getting the goal finally we had to be more strategic and stifle the game to death .
-
I find it hard to be too critical of this squad. Sometimes we play some lovely stuff but a few off it today. We still deserved the win but we are currently 3rd and top of the champions league.
-
I thought their penalty shout could have gone either way. Always seems to be Cash.
Was a blatant dive, their player didn't even complain when he got booked. But there was absolutely no need for Cash to go to ground in the first place. Idiotic free kick he gave away near the end too, not the only one. Thought Cash had a decent game in the main.
-
The juggling CL and league appears to having a impact. The last two games after CL games we havent won ans the opponents havent been the hardest
Was hoping this wouldnt be a issue
-
I think tatically they got it right too. The first half sub seemed to work, as did targeting our right. (which is an issue - as thats no our swashbuckling, gungho side so shoudl be solid).
Think they made it compacted in front of there box and we struggled to find the way through. The goalkeeper was probably Man of the Match - but they were more good saves from good shots, rather than point blank reflexes. Ramsay in particular struggled with his final ball
-
Hmm. Hope this doesn’t become a pattern otherwise we won’t finish in the top four this season. Maybe some strengthening in January?
-

No he isn’t. I rarely if ever criticise an individual but for me Cash isn’t a bad player all of a sudden I just think we’ve outgrown him and we need an upgrade at right back.
He is fine as one of two RB choices , but I agree we need another RB (Dumfries ?) as Konsa isn't a RB (IMHO)

I thought they were extremely lucky to only be 0-1 with zero time to play. Good finish from their forward, but the game being a draw has not very much to do with their tactics being successful in my view, and more to do with us having numerous brain farts in the last 10 minutes.
They did defend well to give them their due
-
Hmm. Hope this doesn’t become a pattern otherwise we won’t finish in the top four this season. Maybe some strengthening in January?
Last season, second half of the season in isolation, we finished ninth. That was with our paper thin squad running on empty. That’s where we’ll improve this time. We’ll be fine I reckon, and anyway, fifth will get Champions League.
-
Hmm. Hope this doesn’t become a pattern otherwise we won’t finish in the top four this season. Maybe some strengthening in January?
Just improve our finishing we will be fine
-
Fair play to Bournemouth 4 points vs us and arsenal a very good return
Got chatting to a load of their fans before and after game outside villa park nice bunch of away fans.
-
Really poo⁷r game management after we scored
At that stage it could have been 4=2 so we knew they had a threat
Faffed about, iet them have possesion and gave away free kicks
Maybe all the changes also unsettled the structure
Onwards and Upwards

2022/23 unai stated the aim was to try to get to Europe. 2023/24 Unai stated the aim was to try and get to the champions league. This season he has recently said the next stage is to try and win something. I believe in the man.

Was ALL of the ball out of play?
Doesn't look wholly spherical to me (turn it through 90 degrees and look at it again).
The quality of the image is pretty poor. Surely the "wealthiest and biggest and best league in the world" can find better technology to employ across the grounds?

Does Hawkeye only cover the goal ?
-
Only works between the sticks.
-
We're one point worse off than last season.
We need to win the next two to be ahead at 11 games.
This and Ipswich were definitely two points dropped.
I'm not too worried with things like that.
Last season was an exceptional opening first four-five months. Think we won eight straight at VP up to the Sheffield United game. However our form in the second half of the season balanced things out as it was little better than average.
With the squad we have now we shouldn't fade as much as we did then given the endless options. Only reason we might is if we do deep in CL or FA cup but that will be exciting enough in itself to paper over inconsistent league results.
-
Only works between the sticks.
Mostly ;)
-
The only be benchmarks of relevance is that 70 points is usually always being enough for 4th and a need to average 2 points a game to achieve it. Ta'da, we are and we look a really good side with plenty of depth. There's only the Man United game that stands out as one we didn't do enough to win so far this season. Arsenal, Ipswich and Bournemouth have all got away with it, massively.
Last November the sky was falling in for me against Forest away. I'm so mightily annoyed that a bunch if mistake bloggers had the temerity to do bugger all but be gifted a draw through our own largesse. I look forward to us laying waste to them later in the season.
Until we find a way to increase that killer instinct we invariably have most of the time, we won't challenge for the title. That's what today means.

Was ALL of the ball out of play?
Doesn't look wholly spherical to me (turn it through 90 degrees and look at it again).
The quality of the image is pretty poor. Surely the "wealthiest and biggest and best league in the world" can find better technology to employ across the grounds?
I literllay do not understand why this clear and obvious error for VAR to intervene. Even now i cant tell if 100% over line so why disallow it? Poor decision for var to get involved in my view.
-
Easily the better side by a country mile all game.not buying all this Bournemouth deserved their point, they were shite and reliant on their keeper.
You never credit the opposition!
Emery said we played excellent, bizarrely. Though did concede that we let them control the last 15 minutes.
-
The image they put on the screen looked like the ball was out.
However, there is no way it would've been looked at had it been certain other teams.....
-
It feels to me like we have a much stronger squad this year compared to last season.
We look worse defensively than last year and i agree we are missing diaby and luizs goals/assists. Dont think we have really replaced diaby. Zero league goals for bidace so far and baileys the same.
Diaby wouldn't get in this team. Opposition players bounce off Rogers or they need to double and triple up on him. Diaby was as weak as piss and effective only when running onto the ball. How's he doing in Asia, by the way?

I watched the game, what would I credit Bournemouth with? Their supposed effective press that we passed through easily all game? Their midfield that we cut through, all game? Their defence that exposed their keeper, most of the game?
Their limp effort to lay a glove on us first half? Their time wasting from the 50th minute on? Their non-existent threat second half?
I'll credit their number 2 between the sticks for having the best game of his career, they'll get nothing else because I saw nothing else worthy of anything but contempt, the smash and grab wankers.
-
Rogers finishing will be brought into question soon unless he starts converting .
We were poor for the last period but it wasn't a patch on the AWOL performances at Brighton and Palace at the end of last season, albeit with the team running on empty.
-
You win some, you lose some.
That's what today felt like.
But neither of those things happened today!
-
Torres made 2 exquisite through balls that Pirlo would have had a semi over and cracked a shot from 25 yards. He was excellent. They tried to outmuscle him in the duels, but they seldom got in those positions and did absolutely nothing when they did win them.
We chucked that away. The game management in injury time, was moronic. The profligacy in front of goal stopped a stroll.
-
Bournemouth were intent on trying to stay close in the game but we can blame our finishing as much as their keeper for that. They were hardly contemptible for their approach though. You could say we were contemptible for changing our approach in the last 10 minutes when it made no sense.
A couple of their subs near the end did make a difference, whereas one or two of ours didn't.
-
I am absolutely livid about today. We threw 2 points away via stupidity. Why the fuck did Emi started clearing the ball upfield instead of playing out in the last 10 plus injury time? Playing out would have retained possession and wasted more time. He did it time and again and every time it came back resulting in a corner or free kick for them. They scored from the third more or less identical free kick they had in that period. It was insanity pure insanity and it got what it deserved. Absolutely fucking annoying.
-
We're one point worse off than last season.
We need to win the next two to be ahead at 11 games.
This and Ipswich were definitely two points dropped.
Yep, but sadly an additional 2 points we didn’t particularly deserve or earn on merit.
-
You win some, you lose some.

We lost 2 points though . Emery will turn on the hairdryer and we will go and batter Spurs now .
-
We played some great football today.
The disallowed goal is a bit of a disgrace - even the picture shown on the stadium screens did not decisively show the whole ball was out
When Chris Kavanagh gave his first yellow after 4 minutes, my heart sank. He set himself up to fail, and many of the 13 he waved were not worthy of such judgement. And, in other news, Villa should have been home and hosed by halftime. We weren't.
-
Once Watkins went off nothing was sticking up front . This is the downside of Duran. We also lost all physicality in midfield once Rogers and McGinn went off . After getting the goal finally we had to be more strategic and stifle the game to death .
Thought Rogers was poor and can't have any complaints about being hooked early.
Onana provides physicality but his limitations with the ball are becoming clear. Tielemans was blowing out his ar$e last 20 minutes and should have been hooked and Barkley left where he was next to Kamara. Emery got that one wrong.
-
Onana is good on the ball. Got caught once, but I've seen Kamara caught a number of times in the same position. In fact, Onana is excellent on the ball, what a weird take.
-

I’ll have a pint of what you’re on!
-
If you're in agreement with Mr 3.5/10 then you're probably up to your neck in a deep rooted crack problem, so a pint of anything but liquefied Angel Dust is unlikely to touch the sides.
I watched Onana spray a number of passes that cut through Bournemouth, as he's got an excellent range. I also saw him get booked with his first tackle and was worried his telescopic legs wouldn't survive the entire game with the referee. Emery seemed to think the same.
-
He was lucky not to be sent off for a studded challenge.
Unai knows his limitations and he was always likely to be pulled at half time.
Bonkers to suggest he’s good on the ball. Cheerfully bonkers!
-
He clearly is, with his ability to pick passes between the lines. I'm not sure what game you've watched or what Onana you've been watching all season.
-

Agreed with regards Onana’s limitations on the ball today apart from one superb pass which I’ll give him the benefit for as being intended.
-
I thought Onana was probably inhibited by the early yellow card and although he did some good things, he was also the one who was most susceptible to error today.
-
He's usually very good at timing a sliding tackle, but there's no way I'd trust it second half with the referee being as card happy as he was.
-

To be fair that’s how he always plays. I think Unai uses him for a combative first 45 before trying something more creative. Tielemans is adapting to playing with someone like that and generally bypassing him!
-

Not sure how fit he is as he hasn’t got past 45 minutes recently but I think Kamara will be first choice alongside Tielemans before long.
-
Onana has a better pass success rate than his contemporary Kamara did last season. He's 90% Premier League and 94% in the Champions League. He also passes the eye test. Both are good on the ball and very good defensive midfielders.
Both he and Boobie have better passing stats than Tielemans, which is to be expected given the outrageous threading through the eyes of needles Tielemans attempts most games, an absolute joy to watch.

Diaby has more assists than jaden and bailey combined from waht i saw. But hasnt scored when i last checked
-
If Philogene didn't have the strongest finger tips since Bruce Lee, he'd have probably got some minutes.
Bailey assisted the goal today...

Was a harsh sending off but avoidable
-
Deeply frustrating.
The game was neither physical or niggly, yet the ref gave us 7 yellow cards for 12 fouls conceded. Ridiculous.
-
Only had one eye on the game this afternoon, which makes picking out individual performances difficult. Overall, I didn’t think we were too bad, but our final ball was lacking and we were not clinical when we did make a breakthrough. For example, we seemed to work our left side overload 6 or 7 times, but did not find our man with any of the crosses.
The game management was very poor in the last 10 minutes, in which we were punished for not showing the opposition respect, I felt. We must learn that lesson.
The bigger picture is that we’re picking up points at a rate of 2 per game, but without performances - rather like we did last year from January (though our points haul was slightly worse in that period). We’ve started the CL positively and are still in the Carabao. But of course the second portion of the first-half fixture list is so much harder than the games we’ve played so far. So a smallish bump in the road, everything still to play for and a stronger squad to lean on.
UTV!
-
I only had to watch that uncharacteristic last 20 minutes once, I fear the squad will be made to pour over it for many hours. Not at our best today but looking like a deserved win once we scored only for us then to play like Steve Bruce was back
-
Some of our approach play whilst nice on the eye is overly elaborate and we need to mix it up a bit more . With all our possession and chances today to come away with a single goal is massively disappointing and needs looking at , again plenty of set pieces too that resulted in not much .
-
Just watched El Classico and how I wish we'd have bagged Raphinha. Pace to burn ,an eye for a pass and can finish. We'd win the league with him
-
4 to 6 points thrown away so far this season. We’re spoiled currently but also not winning this kind of fixture has the potential to stymie the chances of playing Bayern et al next season too.
-
We're usually pretty good at managing the latter stages of games in which we have the lead, so it was baffling to see us constantly hoofing panicky clearances in the last ten minutes.
All very annoying, but it's a learning curve I guess.
-
As exciting and entertaining as it was, beating Bayern and Bologna but only drawing with manu and Bournemouth has done us no favours. It would have been better in the long term if we had drawn the champions league games and won the Premier league games. We would still be in contention for top 8 champions league and would be top of the premier league tonight.
-
What pisses me off is that results like this and Man U , feed the narrative of lazy journalists who say that Villa will struggle to cope with CL and PL fixtures.

We still wouldn't be top of the League but I get what you mean however we have more chance of correcting it in the PL than CL.

The problem is that those were not panicky clearances, we were deliberately using the tactic for Emi to kick is long.

It suggests they are doing their homework well.

The ref was unbelievably shit. Started his authoritarian stance from the off., then forgot about it once a 2nd Yellow should be administered. He’s not the reason why we couldn’t see out a victory though. FFS, it was the Gerrard years all over again with its utter naivety.
-
Seeing the highlights on MOTD, I'm still not convinced that ball was fully out before McGinn's goal and I don't know how the VAR can make a definitive decision without goaline technology. That said, seeing their two penalty shouts, I think we were a bit fortunate as I don't think either would have been overturned if they'd been given.
-
If that stat is true - 7 bookings from our 12 fouls, something is wrong - either the ref being shite or us being brain-dead.
-

The ball was clearly out. Not even contentious.

Only seen the angle shown on MOTD. Was there another angle shown?
-
Someone near me showed me the still of the ball on his phone. The ball was just out of play so correct decision to overturn our goal. Also, just watched match of the day and, as I thought, in real time, Cash tripped their player and should have been a penalty. Watching the Bailey incident, regarding handball, that decision could have gone either way. Had the ref given it as handball, I don’t think var would have over turned it.
-
It was over the line. Inter Milan over the line.
-
We were a kick away from three points. Bit odd taking McGinn off especially when Onana had already gone off. Need to win games like that if we want Champions League football again.
-
As many have doubtless said, really frustrating to concede so late, that almost felt like a loss.
I thought we weren’t quite on top of our game in the final third and should have been more ruthless, both in chances created and finishing. I also think we shouldn’t have just decided to shell it long in the last 10 minutes and should have kept possession and not commit so many men forward. We also gave away a cluster of late free kicks in a similar position which allowed them to set their sights on us, partly because Cash and Bailey aren’t as tight defensively as Cash and McGinn. Partly also because we lost a few 50:50 challenges high up the pitch.
Obviously I trust Emery and the coaching staff but for really late free kicks when defending a lead I’d prefer our defensive line to be 5 metres deeper so we’re not running towards our own goal.
Finally, 13 yellow cards in a fairly benign game is madness.
-
This is my view as well. We’re basically going at the exact same pace we were this time last year, and in a good league position relative to our rivals. We were on a red hot run last year form and results wise, so to be at pace with that is impressive. The improvement on our points total will come in the second half of the year - that’s where the squad depth will show.
Today was frustrating and was ultimately down to missed chances, but despite that results around us have been kind, and if Liverpool win today we’ll be third outright. Positive is that we are much harder to beat this year than last, only one loss in all comps and it’s nearly November.
Rest most of the key players in the week and let’s have people fresh for the Spurs game - excited for that one.
-
Not that he was to blame for the result, but from the stats quoted, that ref needs sectioning. He's more card-happy than Clintons.
-
I think the ball was out, and frankly we’ve had a pretty key “ball over the line call” go our way in the last few years, so can’t really grumble. We should have won anyway, it was a lack of control at the end that cost us.
-
We were the better team but we should not have conceded in that manner. The only path for them was by free kick or corner, all Cash needed to do was keep the player running wide, the foul is typical of the way he plays the game. What stood out for me was the lack of pace down our flanks, Bailey for me seems to be running at half pace. It's no disaster but Emery will see what we see and the rebuild is not yet finished. More pace please.
-
I thought Cash was pretty lucky not to give away that penalty, whatever decision the referee gave wasn't going to be overturned and it went our way, but he just dived in like a crazy man yet again. Teams know to attack him rather than Digne or Maatsen.
-
What pisses me off is that results like this and Man U , feed the narrative of lazy journalists who say that Villa will struggle to cope with CL and PL fixtures.
Yes, this pisses me off too.
-
Not read any earlier comments to see what others thoughts are, was at the game and just watched the sky highlights, my general opinion hasn’t changed, didn’t really think we had a hangover from the Champions league, on another day we could have been 3 or 4 up if it wasn’t for their keeper, unfortunately when you are only 1 up going into the last few minutes, you give the other team a bit of hope to go for it, we didn’t learn from giving away a few free kicks from a similar area, I saw at the game Cash getting a hard time from Konsa over the goal, watching it now, I think that may have been a bit harsh if Cash was in the position he was told to be in, it was a good ball that just dropped over his head, thought Duran could have been closer to the goal scorer, but again he might have been where he was told to be, good ball and good header, sometimes you have to give them credit. Overall I thought we did enough to have won the game, felt like a loss at the end but let’s keep our heads up and looking forward to the next games and I’m sure we’ll be fine
-
Points dropped but think we will batter spuds anyway. Liverpool will be tricky but was a fair result as it was a pen for Bournemouth
-
I thought we were comfortable and held them at arms length, without ever having full control. I think our downfall was decision making in the final third, we got into so many promising wide positions and wasted them, even the McGinn 'goal' surely Jacob is scoring that, no overhitting the pass for a tap in. And that wasn't the only one.
Emi had little to do so to concede from what little they created was criminal, and what a game their keeper had, 4 top class saves was it?
Overall, a wasted opportunity from a great position.
-
Should have won & it should have been comfortable. We opened them up multiple times but never picked out a player or when we did it was missed. The frustration comes from the fact that it was as dominant as any performance this season.
The last ten minutes was ridiculous, if you're going to bring a player down do it on the halfway line & not when he's reached the point where they can throw everything into the box.
Reminiscent of the Wolves game a couple of years ago which we lost. We got lucky with the penalty decision today.
Love Matty Cash but we need a right back.
-
I’ve thought that a few times this season that it looks like they are just cutting it back into an area, rather than actually picking someone out, maybe carrying out instructions and hoping someone is there
-
Obviously disappointing to concede such a late equaliser but to be fair I thought Bournemouth played a good game and deserved their point. Both keepers had to make good saves, not just theirs.
-
That was a shit goal to concede. Cash and Duran blaming each other, watching the ball and not tracking the player. Basics to get to a cross as it comes in.
It was obvious Barkley was going to foul him there and I was screaming St him not to, and when it was awarded I just knew they were going to score.
We need to be more clinical up front, and more solid and sensible at the back when we're in front late in games. There's nothing wrong in closing out a 1-0 with dull and uninspiring football.
-

It's Barkley who dives in to concede the free kick leading to the goal.

So frustrating. He’s running along at full pelt, Barkley up his arse, Cash in front of him, and his team-mates spread all over the pitch. Just jockey, or even let him get his cross in. Whatever you do, don’t foul and allow a cross where nobody is allowed to stand within ten-yards and he can aim towards ten of his team-mates all in our box.
-
Ceded control last ten minutes. Whether’s that fatigue or trying to defend what we had I don’t know. Not going to blame just Barkley as it was the third or fourth in a series of stupid fouls. Grrrrrr
Barkley, no.
Matty, yes - who was he supposed to be marking across the backline?
If he was stood right in front of the goalscorer he would have had an easy headed clearance, and still allowed him time to cover a late runner into the channels (if necessary).
-
Should Martinez be getting beaten by a header from that position? Not sure his footwork was as sharp as it could have been.

I know some are desperate to have a go at Cash, if anything it's Duran who loses his man for the header.

All depends whether they were stood where they was told to, looks like we zonal mark rather than pick up a man, if Cask could have stood in front of the striker, then Duran should also have moved forward as he could see better what was happening
-
Barkey could of smashed him a bit earlier, like nearer the halfway line. Have to say the bournmouth centre half with the rolled down socks did a good job on Watkins today. Ramsey was our best player, Rogers off the boil.
-
What pisses me off is that results like this and Man U , feed the narrative of lazy journalists who say that Villa will struggle to cope with CL and PL fixtures.
Yes, this pisses me off too.
However it is a factor. Evidence is there to see.
-
Martinez 6, Cash 6, Konsa 7, Torres 7, Digne 6, Onana 5, Tielemans 7, Ramsey 8, McGinn 7 , Rogers 4, Watkins 6.
Barkley scored a good goal but crazy decision to give freekick away cost us. Bailey got an assist but poor again that aside. Duran missed a sitter and was rubbish when we needed him. Can't remember much impact from Maatsen or Kamara. Not Emery's best day on the sideline, his final change unbalanced us late on.
Two points dropped, especially given it was probably the strongest matchday squad we have named in about 25 years.

I don't really think it's his fault alone for the goal or anything, but he is a liability and a weakness for us and the finely-tuned football we want to play.

It’s just levels. We’d have loved his whole-hearted effort, even his ability, in many of our past few seasons. He’s probably our best RB since Kyle Walker. It just so happens that now even our centre-half is better there.
-
Does Hawkeye only cover the goal ?
In this day and age it should covers all sides of the grounds - allowing the assistant refs to concentrate on offsides and fouls.
It works in tennis with a much smaller ball and higher speed of travel.
-
I thought their penalty shout could have gone either way. Always seems to be Cash.
Was a blatant dive, their player didn't even complain when he got booked. But there was absolutely no need for Cash to go to ground in the first place. Idiotic free kick he gave away near the end too, not the only one. Thought Cash had a decent game in the main.
My point was more that if the referee gave it. I don’t think VAR would have overturned it. They’d have let the ref take the crap for a questionable decision

I know some are desperate to have a go at Cash, if anything it's Duran who loses his man for the header.
Duran was behind the player, so normally the player in front will win the header - Matty was in front, but nowhere near him and the ball sails over his head, Matty was not marking anyone and a defensive wall was not necessary.

I was talking about it last night with someone who works in coaching. He said that Cash would be positioned there normally to cover runners off the ball if they had two over the free kick. As they didn’t, he said Cash should have been deeper to block off that space and you could see Emery and McPhee screaming that at him before the free kick was taken. He also said Duran would take some of the blame as well as he didn’t pick the man up properly.
-
Cash was also covering the channel, though, wasn’t he? Either way, they shouldn’t have allowed so much space between them. Duran is watching the flight of the ball rather than the attacker, which is why he gets caught in no man’s land. Shame because, although it was a well-flighted ball, we didn’t make their striker work for the goal, and that may well have made the difference.
Having watched the highlights (the game seemed more even to me live than in the highlights package), we really threw it away with our wastefulness. Duran obviously for his sitter, but Ollie also had a couple of good chances and Rogers surely has to hit the target from his shot on the edge of the box.
-
Slept on it and sobered up as well. Reflecting, some of our build up play was a joy to watch, however, it did feel like ‘one of those games’ where, despite being the far superior team, it felt the game could get away from us. Hugely frustrating then that we looked like we were going to get it over the line.
I dont think anyone played particularly poorly and some, Tielemans, Konsa, Torres, Ramsey, were very good.
The one thing i would say is that we’re not quite as dynamic going forward as this time last year. I was sad enough last Sunday to look at the brief highlights of all our pre xmas home games from last year and Bailey, Diaby, Watkins, McGinn, Luiz, were ruthless going forwards and we were blowing teams away.
If we’re going to challenge the top 3, which I think we can, we are going to have to beat Spurs next week and then possibly get something at Anfield.
-
That last 10 minutes or so yesterday reminded me very much of Brentford at home last season, when we went from 2-0 to 2-3 in the same amount of time. On both occasions we lost all shape and discipline, with the opposition focusing pretty much entirely down our right hand side, and no-one stepping in, or stepping up, to halt it.
-
Good job the ref blew up, another 5 mins we lose that game.
Anyway i think we will win at Spurs as the game with Spurs coming at us will suit our style .
-
Re their equaliser.
Barkley had no need to commit the foul - Taverner was heading down the touchline and Matty Cash had moved into position in front of him ready to slow him up and how him down the line.
Had that been the case, then Barkley would have been able to doubled up with Cash to either regain possession, force a throw in, or just run the clock down a bit more.
Neither Cash or Duran covered themselves in glory for the free kick. Not exactly sure what Cash was doing so far out and Duran obviously let Evanilson go unchallenged- needed to get much tighter.
Pretty sure Unai will have appropriate words with all concerned when he gets them back to BMH.

Yeah i think duran was more to blame than cash tbh

Yesterday was a prime example of where rotation needs to come into play. Rogers wasnt veey good and probably fatigue played a role in that. This is a example where we need to rotate
Im almost certain he will be rested vs palace

It was 0-0 when Duran missed, so Barklay’s goal makes that irrelevant. Same with the ball going/not going out in reality.

I am still so pissed off about yesterday.
I’m avoiding any football or links or footage of the game.

Understood, but watching MOTD, especially Brighton’s game, made me feel better. I’d have been thinking about throwing myself onto the tracks at Witton Station had that been us.
Which reminds me, public transport was decent yesterday. Stayed til the end of the game and got off the train at Marston Green at five past six.

You can’t just ignore everything that happens before a goal though. If we’re wasteful in front of goal over 90 minutes, only score once and don’t win, our missed chances are definitely relevant.
-
As good as we are at the moment we won't actually win anything until we can be more clinical with the amount of chances we create.

Ultimately that's what cost us yesterday - missing 3 gilt edged chances , as we rarely keep clean sheets so generally need 2 goals minimum
-
Definitely frustrated but we will learn from this.

Thought the same...Cash was a bit too far forward but most blame has to go to Duran who was ball watching. Watkins defends that front post area very well, something Duran needs to learn. Id expect Martinez to have tipped it around the post too.
I thought Bailey was fortunate enough to avoid giving away that penalty.

Maybe an early goal (McGinn’s for example) might have relaxed us and led to us having more space to score a second. But the principle of a goal changing the game still applies. Barklay’s goal just led to panic, and there’s no reason to believe that Duran’s chance, had it gone in about a minute earlier, wouldn’t have led to the same. One thing is for sure - if he’d have scored and there had been a kick-off instead of a goal-kick, the circumstances leading to Barklay’s goal definitely wouldn’t have occurred.
-
Shearer and Walcott both blamed Cash for the goal on MOTD.
-
Still really pissed off with us chucking it away yesterday. To be honest, our home Premier League form is a bit mediocre, and has been stretching back into the second half of last season.
-
As good as we are at the moment we won't actually win anything until we can be more clinical with the amount of chances we create.
And can't keep a clean sheet in the league
-
Wrong thread.
-
Watching MOTD this morning, Cash’s sliding tackle on Semenyo was a penalty, Bailey a tad lucky too with the handball, but we definitely got away with one with Cash, made me feel a bit better really.
If we get results against the better sides, this and the man utd result wont feel frustrating, spurs feels a really big game now.
On Cash, the things I’ve always liked about him, his whole heartedness, willingness to throw himself into a crunching tackle etc, are also ironically the things that are starting to make him more of a liability as the team transforms. He’s a really good player for us as we established ourselves in this league since 2020, whilst he can still ‘do a job’, i would much rather have Konsa there now for most games, whilst Ned gets up to speed.
-
This game and Ipswich away are the ones that really disappoint . More of this and you can forget top 4
-

We had a real problem in our right full back/right centre back area against Ipswich. Cost us the game that day against relegation fodder. Bournemouth are a decent team, far better than the Bologna team we beat without breaking sweat during the week.

I'm not convinced that the ball was out when Ollie pulled it back for McGinn. The only tv angle they showed wasn't conclusive at all.
-
Disappointed with the goal, so so easy, Bournemouth were nothing special and thought Real Madrid and Everton give us a harder game
-

Reflected in our goal difference compared to the sides around us.

It was out however it was not given out by on field official so it should have stood because it's not VAR's job or within it's technical capability, such as a view from top, to make a decision.
-
Saw a real close close-up on twitter and judging by that, if that was out it was a funny shaped ball.
And yes, VAR either shouldn’t have got involved or said assistant ref’s call.
Shame, it was a great finish by SJM.

I dunno...we'd all be saying it was clearly out if it had been Bournemouth. We fucked-up yesterday, no one to blame but ourselves.
I hope Dave Bath's kids will still come back, at least they know what following Villa is all about after seeing us win one and then villa-fy another game a few days later.
-
Yeah it looks clearly, if just, out to me. Thought so immediately at the time.

The distortion at the side of the ball is the digital artefact's from zooming in on the picture. As there is green showing I will accept that as the predominant colour and the ball is out. We just need consistency. Shame our cameras are so close to the by-line unlike Newcastle's. Any angle on the picture and they wouldn't be able to judge.
And not sure why you think VAR shouldn't get involved on an absolute rather then a subjective decision.
-

Can you see the different shape of the ball on one side to the other? Or is it one of my eyes?

I did think the shape was a tad odd and who knows what's causing it, but I'm looking side-on and can see green between the ball and the line.

Well, the goal-line technology is not set up for anything outside the posts, which was the excuse for the Arsenal one last season against the Jaudis.
-

it looked out to me in real time hence i didn't do a lap round the living room frightening the other occupants
-
Does anyone know what the precise rule is re when VAR can intervene?
The decision from the match officials was that Watkins kept the ball in and that McGinn scored. Then it is claimed that VAR overruled because of 'factual evidence'.
Though if it is not Hawkeye or other technology, then is it 'factual' or simply the VAR official offering an opinion?
That strikes me as the VAR stepping beyond their remit and making decisions for the match officials. UTV

Occupants or inmates?

We had a few of these sort of results last season. Making a balls of it against Brentford at home in April and then beating Arsenal away springs immediately to mind.
Also the drawn game against Bournemouth away before Christmas. Felt like we needed all three points in that one before facing Citeh and Arsenal at home.
If we see that sort of response again this year I'm sure most of us won't mind at all.
-

Depends which teams are involved
-
Semenyo dives quite obviously.
-
Semenyo dives quite obviously.
Goes to his knees with the greatest of ease for sure, but there is a bit of contact and had it been given my hunch is it doesn't get overturned, as it wasn't with the decision that was made.

It's a dive. Abiut the only booking Clinton's Cards got right.
-
I don't disagree. I just think Cash lunged in and got a bit lucky.

VAR can override on absolute decisions if they are called wrong on the field WITHOUT the ref needed to rewatch to decide. So ball out, offside and handball by the scoring player in the build-up. If the decision becomes subjective (player was offside but was he interfering, handball by another player before the goal, etc) then the onfield ref has to make the final decision with VAR showing them.
-
Thought we played well first half but definitely dropped off in the second. Rodgers looked tired second half which is understandable considering the amount of football he’s played.
Last 10 mins or so were very strange from what we’ve come to see in terms of managing the game out.
Upgrade at right back is a priority. Cash battled well against Semanyo and is always willing to get forward and works hard. But positionally he can often be caught out, his final product is often lacking and he’s always a danger for giving away a penalty either by sliding in recklessly or handballing. Season in, season out.it continues. He’s probably one of the few players that hasn’t improved under Emery which suggests he doesn’t have much capability to.
-
The trouble with Cash is that as the game progresses and he tires, his decision making suffers. Tbf he kept Semenyo quiet for about 80 minutes but I don't know what Iraola did but all of a sudden Cash was getting isolated one on one time after time and it has to be said it was only a matter of time before something happened. I couldn't understand why Carlos didn't come on and Konsa move wide but Unai decided we could see it out but unfortunately we couldn't.
-
We used five subs. Kamara for Watkins was the obvious defending a lead change, nobody is leaving two forwards on at that stage.

Gah you're right I missed that on the day.

In Cash's defence he had 2022 version Bailey in front of him for support . No wonder they targeted that side more . Once McGinn and Rogers went off we lost all physicality in midfield and they just strolled through. .

Yeah but Cash was all over the fucking shop for their goal, just stood there doing fuck all. That's nothing to do with Bailey.
-
We lost 1 point on the top of the table, and no points against Liverpool, Arsenal or ManU. We gained points on Tottenham and Newcastle and lost out to Chelsea and Man City.
Not bad overall.

Bailey was stood there forming a one man wall god knows why , Duran is more guilty ball watching doesn't even challenge the goalscorer who he is watching him score

VAR should not get involved unless they have a top view like the one in the world cup (Japan goal). It's the only way to make a decision taking into account the circumference. The image shown has a gap but both the ball and the line is distorted. So the correct call is stick to on field decision and play to the whistle.
-

True but they all had arguably tougher opponents. We'll see what we're made of in the next two games - but away to Spurs and Liverpool might well see us fall a few places in the table.
-
Arguably, yes. But then that's the same every single week.
-
Didn’t Liverpool lose at home to Forest?
Over the course of a season there’s going to be games we should have won or got lucky. We played well which made it annoying not to win but at least our form is looking good.

One defeat in all competitions, on 24th August, so far this season.
-
The next five weeks we have Spurs A, Liverpool A, Chelsea A, with Palace at home twice in the cup and league. Safe to say we’ll have a much better idea of the direction of our season after this set of games. Really big month.

Yes but on average Liverpool chuck points away less often than we do. Our home record is a bit mediocre as I said before, and has been stretching back quite a way into last season. That's arguanly the strongest squad we've had in many a long year, but we couldn't find a way to beat Bournemouth, which is really disappointing. Given we've got pretty well a full strength squad, we need to start playing a bit better in the league if we're going to finish top 4 again, we should be taking advantage of teams slipping up around us, not just accepting that at least we didn't fall behind them.
-
Yeah our home form hasnt been as good as last year. We should be beating one of manure or Bournemouth at home. To fail to beat both is not really good
Our away forms been better but we have some real tests now coming up

Very disappointed with the result given the chances we wasted and the last 10 or so minutes when we turned into Wimbledon of the 80s minus the nous. We lacked any leadership on the pitch in that time.

Yeah, I'm surprised Mcginn went off unless he was one of the 700 that were booked.

He'd been booked and it's a standard Unai sub.

Kamara was probably on to stamp some authority but it didn't happen, he needs games to get back up to speed and he should play 90 mins v Palace this week .
-
Bournemouth's equaliser was eminently preventable and Unai will be really pissed off about it. Why did Emi launch it when we could of kept possession? Both Duran and Bailey made token gestures to get to the ball. Both failed miserably and there was just a shrug from them as the Bournemouth player legged it down the wing. Barkley gave chase and for some reason decided to bring their player down when he still had Konsa to beat but from that distance he probably thought there wasn't any danger. Then Emi for once in no man's land and and the defending awful. All in all a total clusterfuck of a goal to concede at any time but to do it in the 96th minute was suicidal. Ah well I'm over it now and I'm certain that the boss will be replaying it to them and pointing out those errors. Duran did not cover himself in glory and coupled with his glaring miss in front of the Holte I think it's safe to say he had a bad day at the office.
-
Need to control the last 10 minutes of a match much better when leading!
Oh and the Terrace View GA+ is rip-off. I didn't pay for it btw.

For the money they charge, you could have a very nice meal in town, with booze and taxis to and from the ground - and sit in better seats (if you are already a season ticket holder.)

The last 10 was horrendous like we'd forgotten everything we've been doing for 2 years and went back into Gerrard mode. Very frustrating , the subs were wrong .
