If Emi goes to Man Utd it would just be another kick in the balls.

15 years ago we had to accept players leaving for a lesser club (Man City) because they had a 'project'. They were less than us but they had 'ambitions'.

Now we are the 'project', with demonstrable progress. We are already better than Man Utd.

Yet supposedly, now that it's ours, our best players aren't interested in a 'project', they suddenly respect history.

Football is fucking shit.

It will also mean he won’t have to move his family…

I love Emi but he's on the downward slope, there's no getting away from that, and £45m is good money. Sell.

I also agree with whoever it was who said on the previous page that he doesn't think Unai has ever been entirely convinced.

Agreed, ideally with Rashford coming the other way.

I get that sentiment entirely and it might be I’m wrong, but my view is that Emi might be on the downward curve or at the very least not in his prime. Now, replacing him with quality is far from certain, but this isn’t Man Utd just wading in and taking our players at their peak. I suspect this would when we are prepared to sell and for a lot of money.

A proper Man United signing this. Buying somebody too old and past their prime.

He was personally responsible for too many goals; PSG and Man City stand out in particular at this hour. Know when to sell.

It is amazing the comments that he is on the downward slope because he is potentially leaving us - a few weeks we were singing that he was the worlds number 1

Of course if he stays with us he will still be the worlds number 1

Go back and watch the highlights of the Bayern game and decide if he's still good enough or not.

I’m not sure they are - if you look at last season there were plenty flagging he wasn’t quite at the level he was at previously. Now whether it’s a decline or an under par season, who knows but it’s not after timing following this link to Man Utd.

A song is a song. "Emi Martinez, why did you just chuck that ball in" doesn't scan particularly well and isn't too supportive.

It might make you feel more at ease to know that nobody is literally shitting on the city- that would be grim or more unfortunately, we don't have by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen.

Agreed.

Also, more generally, I don't think that the "one more push" approach (tacking the odd player onto the existing spine) is going to be enough to keep us moving forward next year.

Now, more than any point, I’m not that bothered about us losing players. Emery & Monchi know exactly what they’re doing.

I don’t know, I just have this gut feeling that we’re on the cusp of something great, and perhaps Emery has figured out what we need to do to turn in the sort of side that looks like PSG looked against us. It’s either that or I’ve got wind. One of the two.

Either I care, and I hate it, I hate it like death, I hate that even when we finish miles ahead of them, when we're so much better than them overall, that they beat us and fuck us on the last day and insodoing put themselves, on the back of noodle revenues, in a position to sign maybe my favourite Villa player of my lifetime;

or I don't care, I take the cold view, I say Well, we have to evolve the squad, good business, really football rivalries are irrational, the important thing is the sensible building of a competitive squad - and a bit of the whole reason I follow football dies.

Bah. I'm just going to think about cricket today.

Agree, there were quite a few goals conceded that I would have expected him to save.
But we looked more vulnerable defensively and most of that was not down to him.

Saved me typing a reply out…exactly my thoughts. Including the wind!

If he goes, he goes. We move on.
