My top Villa keepers would be

1 Bosnich
2 Martinez
3 Friedel
4 Rimmer

I'm always surprised with Friedel's enduring popularity on here...I thought he was no more than ok. David James, FA Cup final error aside, was very good for us I thought. Sam Johnstone was a brilliant shot stopper for us too.

No disputing the first two. Bosnich made impossible saves seem possible at his best.

I agree with all that. I thought James was excellent for us over the piece (you know what notwithstanding).

Emi the king.

Should be our captain imo.

Great list with the exception of Friedel. Surely a place could be found for Coombs and Spink. My particular favourite after Bossie would be Jim Coombs then Martinez Rimmer and Spink

I don’t get it with Bosnich either.
People are entitled to their opinion, though.

For me, In no particular order
Simms, Rimmer, Spink and Martinez were/are all way better

Bosnich I’d rank alongside Guzan.
Made some great saves and had some great games. Both let themselves down

Edit: Good call for Jimmy Cumbes, probably my favourite keeper without being the best

Bosnich's kicking was very poor if I remember rightly.  Martinez is about the best I've seen.

To be fair to Bosnich, they brought the back pass rule out when he was well into his career. He did have a foot like a 50p piece though.

His agent will ask for triple. Emi, a good man, will tell him to behave. After that....who knows ?

Bozzy had that presence.

He played a big part in one of our league cup wins. Interesting watching the season reviews how many errors he actually made during the season with miscommunication with defence (far more than Emi) but sort who can then produce a Coventry style wonder save five minutes later as if nothing had happened.

I do think if we can quality for europe or actually win something Emi will comfortably surpass him especially given what he's achieved at international level in last 12 months.

James was good apart from the obvious game. Friedel solid but never reached the form he did at Blackburn here imo.

That's a very good point and I had forgotten about that.  Also, Bosnich tried to end Klinsmann, which was quite funny at the time.

And then when he was getting a bit of stick about it the following year, did a Nazi salute and goosestep back at them.

I notice the verb "to end...someone" has crept into modern usage. Still think Saranyu was the trailblazer with "to funeral...the Toon".

Anyway Bozzie was still young in 1991 when the rule came in, ample time for him to sort his feet out. Ian Walker did it with aplomb albeit with more annoying hair.

The same Ian Walker that was confronted by an angry Leicester fan for being shit when we gubbed them 5-0 at the crisp dome?
