I’m happy with the choice, it could be good for McGinn. Must have been tough for Mings as he’s been a fantastic skipper for us and he’s been a favourite of mine for some years now. Although I do worry if we kick on like I hope, we will need an upgrade on him. He does worry me at times when we play it out of the back so often now. I have the same worry with Konsa. Chambers looks far more assured on the ball than those two.

I also still have faith that McGinn will get back to a more consistent force for us.

Absolutely baffled by this decision? Was expecting him to be a substitute next season to be honest.....VERY worrying

It is baffling, not sure about VERY worrying.

Logically, if he had already made his mind up about Mings, who else was he going to pick?  Neither Ings or Watkins, as both will be interchangeable/droppable.  Coutinho - not the right character.  Buendia - still establishing himself.  Ramsay - too young.  Kamara - too new.  Digne - too French (joke).  Cash - about the only other person I could think of, but doesn't seem vocal enough.

I can only think McGinn was his only choice and that he won't be afraid to drop him, much in the same way he wasn't afraid to take the captaincy from Mings.

You've said it all , we don't have enough true leaders , if anyone thinks things are going to improve next season then they're in for a shock , mcginn will be undropable and we struggle for goals plus a few unhappy players in the camp.

I would have just given Martinez the captaincy, if vice needed then choose on the day with A.Young given the Club Captain role

I'm fuming

Just because someone’s captain, it doesn’t mean they are guaranteed a game if they aren’t performing. Personally, I couldn’t care who it is and it’s not as big a deal as it used to be.

This is true. I’ll add,  Mings will behave like a captain in any case just like when Grealish was captain.

By breaking lockdown regulations and getting pissed behind the wheel?  I hope not

Haha only just seen this news as I've been busy today.
Don't get me wrong McGinn's a good character and very funny, but captain material? I'd suggest our manager has sat out in the heatwave far too long, but he was pondering this with 5-10 games remaining last season. No wonder our form suffered and we couldn't win against anybody in the top 8!
In all the time I've watched McGinn I've never seen him take charge of any situation  on the pitch, as a captain might. He may yet surprise me!
As regards Mings, a class statement, one you'd expect a proper captain to make.
We've got captain McGinn, super captain McGinn...

Martinez is vice captain, Ashley Young is club captain.
Wonder what this means for Mings?

Martinez being vice-captain gives gerrard scope to drop McGinn. I think he likes having an outfield player as his captain, but we literally have no one who you could say is a guaranteed starter who is also captain material. I would imagine we’ll see Martinez as the on field captain a reasonable amount this season… it takes away all the uncertainty when meatball isn’t on the pitch, because barring injury, Emi definitely will be…

Not convinced by that - if you want Martinez as captain, you make him captain.  McGinn, barring injury or things going to sh*t will start at least 35 games next season

I do think Mings has been shit on to be honest, but I guess we will have to wait and see how McGinn takes to the role.

I thought he had a terrible season, not the only one. Unless he improves dramatically, I think he will be replaced.

My worry is that signals that we are going to set up as last season with SJM in no mans land and Mings and Watkins up front.
Or worse, Ings and Watkins

This is whats giving me the sinking feeling - that this season will just be a re-run of last one

McGinn is a good player - if used right - I dont think that the way that SG wants his team to play suits his strengths.  Having Kamara may help, but to me he is SGM is worse than Luiz and Ramsey

I think your over thinking the impact this will have on the whole season. There are far too many unknowables at the moment, what the first day team will be, although easier to guess now, will the new players settle, will Coutinhio pull up trees…or not, will Bailey been like a new player etc etc. i dont think it sensible to start worrying what the whole season will be because McGinn is a favourite of the manager.

I do think an earlier poster had called this in thats its probably just as much about Mings not having an automatic place in the team.
