I'd expect both to have extensive contacts and be well aware of potential targets from Villa. Top clubs don't only sign players who played for other leading clubs. Look at Liverpool raiding Southampton every few months, for instance.

Do we think Van Tagg with all his European market experience, has been leeping a close eye on mid table Aston Villas John McGinn all this time. Sane as Conte
Its all a load of old bollix

Is that the same Conte who just bought a midfielder from mid table Brighton?

;-)

Good point and maybe its a case of me not valuing one of our players (though i still really like McGinn).

I just think theres not much going really transfer wise and its just shite talk. Same as Bale coming to us. Absolutely nothing to see here officer

I rate him more than some on here and definitely want him in our squad next season. If Man Utd want players to get them back in the top 4 though, McGinn isn’t the answer, let alone if they want to be challenging for the league.

Because only the greatest players in the world have ever finished in the top four? Wes Brown won five league titles.

McGinn has been going to ManU for the last 4 years if you believe every article.

Exactly, and it all originated as apparently Ferguson liked his fellow Scot some years ago.
Theres very little going on transfer wise for anyone at the moment and its just creating stories for the sake of it.
Luiz is out of contract, even if we get another midfielder in, theres not a chance of both McGinn and Luiz going and if its between the two it’ll clearly be Luiz

And he came through their youth system and was mainly a back up player to better players. Do you think that Man Utd would be wise to shell out £40 - £50m on McGinn in the expectation that he'll propel them into the top 4 and maybe beyond then?

I think he would be a shrewd signing at that price, compared to the money they have spent in the last few years. Anyone who thinks McGinn is worth half a Maguire is at it.

He's worth twice Maguire. If you've ever watched that donkey play

An interesting analysis of McGinn;

Interesting. Or at least it would be, if I could only understand a fraction of it!

I wonder what Steve Bruce makes of stats like this. Not a word about sleeves being rolled up.

So, basically what we've been saying here all of last season - play him further up the pitch!
It does, clearly, indicate the selection challenge DG has: whether to play McGinn or Ramsey; or whether to keep Luiz.

I think you can easily carry 3 players for those 2 positions (and then have a 4th choice who is clearly squad cover). We really need to starting thinking about a 20 man match day squad more than a first 11, most games we're going to see 16 players get time on the pitch so you want at least that many that you'd be happy to see starting.

On the basis that we play 41221 or 41212 (the 2 shapes we've mostly used under Gerrard) you want a bench with a keeper, centre half, DM, CM, AM and striker who wouldn't look out of place starting as the minimum squad. Right now I think we're pretty close to that but we'd probably want a 3rd striker (if Archer isn't considered ready) and I'm not sure about Nakamba as the cover if Kamara is out for any length of time. After that a few useful squad players and the youth team covers most gaps so we only need to find where we're really short on cover for any signings after the 1-2 mentioned (maybe full backs and a 4th CM option if I'm greedy).
