actually slightly disappointed by this. Mcginn has served us brilliantly, is clearly a popular and senior member of the squad but is not, in my opinion, the future long-term. To be honest, of all the tenured senior players, i'd probably only suggest Emi fits the bill.
Looking at the statement, I wonder whether Gerrard thinks it will help Mings and being captain was a distraction on the pitch for him.... (not sure I buy it though)

Bit of a 'fuck you' to Mings. Not even vice captain.

I think it will propel him to be better. Good for him. And a very classy message by Tyrone.

Hmm. Not thrilled about this as it suggests little will change from last year with McGinn being in a no-mans land between defence and attack. Hope I'm wrong but starting to feel a little anxious about this season.

Think this may be the relevant part of the statement regards Ty,
“Naturally, I have had to have a discussion with Tyrone Mings and have explained my reasons for making this decision. More importantly, I believe that not having the responsibility of the captaincy will allow Tyrone to focus more on his own game which can only benefit him and the team.”

Just because someone’s captain, it doesn’t mean they are guaranteed a game if they aren’t performing. Personally, I couldn’t care who it is and it’s not as big a deal as it used to be.

I think this is a mistake.

I dont have an issue with him being captain for a game, I think he is a good player, but McGinn doesnt suit the way SG has had us playing.

We have enough issue trying to balance the midfield as is, and now making him pretty much undroppable worries me

It convinces me we aren't getting in another midfielder now.

I can't think of many teams where the captain isn't a guaranteed starter. Why would you make them captain if they weren't?

If he’s performing then fine, but there’s no way he stays in the team if he’s not. He may start the season in the first 11 but Gerrard won’t keep him there if he isn’t doing it. That goes for anyone and the armband doesn’t make anyone immune ffrom having to perform.

I think when he DS dropped Mings, we all knew the writing was on the wall.  And as McGinn wasnt dropped when he was poor for large parts of last season, I cant see him being dropped now

Good that Mings can now be dropped.  Bad because I wanted a midfield of Kamara/Ramsay/Luiz.

Midfield is still a weak point for me and we need another in there. Someone said earlier they see this as a sign we won’t get another in, I hope not. Last season, a lack of competition meant a few kept their places when out of form but as we build this won’t be the case. McGinn will still have to step up.
