Just for the record, I was a police officer for 27 years. I put plenty of rapists, murderers and child molesters in prison. I have spent hours viewing the most disgusting videos you could imagine and matching them painstakingly with e mails to prove someone was part of an international paedophile ring. I sent down two men who had burgled and terrified a string of old people.  I comforted the bereaved, I dealt with things and saw things and shared people’s suffering in ways I suspect Bob can only imagine. I never lifted a finger to a black person and hate racism with every fibre of my being. I put myself in danger, I got injured, I carry mental scars from what I have seen and done for half the money my mates earn and I did it all, like 99% of plod, because I care. If this bloke has done what he’s accused of, I would have taken massive pride in helping send him to prison. So I suspect I have contributed more to the poor and minority groups than Bob ever has. Not trying to provoke, genuine question:

Your family members and close friends that are/were in the Police, i’m hoping they are not wholly bad folk, and probably like all of us have mixed motivations for everything we do? Do you mean you are wholly against them too when in uniform?

Even if we chose to do a role in theory to serve others, presumably there is always some unconscious need being met in us, being the saviour/martyr etc.

I can only speak for myself, I do my job in mental health because of my own lived experience, my ideals, altruistic/activist intentions but equally I get a wage, and also see how people working in the system get shaped by it, and need to watch out for that, lots of issues around working in an imperfect system, picking your battles, compromise. Inevitably too much of my identity, self esteem/worth gets derived from my roles.

I’d presume it’s the same in the Police force, histories of prejudice, opportunities to exhort and abuse power.
