First ever Marathon and Ultra (52km) completed yesterday in a trail race around the Peak District. Felt ok up to about 75% distance but struggled on the last section and pace dropped off. 8 weeks to my attempt at a 100k (gulps).

Thank you all. I’d hesitate to call it running as I walk up all the ups and stagger and stumble along the flats and downs but the scenery is normally always stunning on the trails and knocks Road running into a cocked hat imv.

I did 100k trail ultra in 2021, monotony doesn’t even begin to describe it. The last 40k were purgatory, not helped by the appalling array of ‘nutrition’ available at the aid stations. Who the hell wants a protein bar or a Fredo chocolate bar 60, 70, 80 kms into 100k ultra?

Good luck with it, I swore I’d never do another one, ever.

How long will it take you as a matter of interest?

I’m 8 weeks out but I reckon about 15 to 20 hrs dependent on weather, final preparation and tapering, ability to handle the hills etc. I now know I can do 50k but the next 50 will be all in the head as the saying goes. A bit worried that my training plan whilst ensuring I’ve got the hills covered (I’m really comfortable powering up those) is somewhat lacking on the volume front and beyond 70k I’m going to really struggle. We’ll see…..

In Jons point re: aid stations the org I’ve been using is Ultra Challenge and as it’s more aimed at charity walkers the aid stations are really good, loads of choice and even meals
Provided for those doing 50/100km options. Though I did see some Freddo bars at one aid station yesterday, I was too busy stuffing myself with cut fruit, peanuts and Haribo!!

Getting back into running. Dropped a stone and a half and signed up for a night time 10K round Rutland Water with eldest daughter in November.

The main reason was the wholly unexpected arrival of a new baby! And once you get out of the habit it's easy to stay out of it.

Back to running 3-4 times a week now though. Me and my eldest have signed up for a night time 10K race around Rutland Water next month, which I'm looking forward to.

Of course yes, forgot about the wee one.

Ha, funny you should say that. One of the mums at the Uppingham running club me and my eldest daugher Izzi go to brought her 7 year old son last night. We were doing some high intensity splits to start with, then finished with a 5K. This little bugger was dead quick, and he ran the final 2K as well. My daughter was laughing at me as I was determined I wasn't going to get beaten to the end by a little kid. "Well done dad, you showed him!" (accompanied by an eye roll)

Got to take your victories where you can!

Haha brilliant. My two keep threatening to sign up for an Ironman or even a half Ironman but so far failed miserably, daughter did a half marathon recently and I wrote her training plan for her and she hit her target time of 1:45 so she’s well pleased, her partner is doing Amsterdam marathon at the weekend, again I’ve written his program for him so hoping he hits his 4 hour target there too. As for my lad he likes the idea of travelling to far flung places to watch people race but not actually do any racing.
