Thanks Jon. Got round in 3:57:23 so I achieved my sub 4 hour target and it was an absolutely out of this world experience.

Saw a couple of Villa flags in the crowd and gave them a shout out and there was a guy in the 87-88 promotion season top running at mile 25 on the Thames Embankment.

Did a 21 miler with a couple of big hills on Christmas Day. Took a few weeks to get that out of my legs, but it made me think I ought to be capable of a three hour marathon. So rather than going through the hassle of signing up for one I thought I'd measure one myself (in amateur fashion) and wait for a day when it wasn't windy, my wife wasn't busy, etc.

That turned out to be today. My time was 2:56:56, but let's face it my measurement was nowhere near accurate enough to be dealing in seconds. I ran slightly over 0.4 miles extra before my watch reached three hours, so I'm satisfied I can claim a sub three hour marathon. Don't particularly fancy doing another one.

I had my kid pass me a cup of water just beyond halfway. Once I had consumed about a quarter of the water and inadvertently poured the rest on myself I tried to put it into a bin as I was passing, but it fell out. I felt sufficiently socially conscious to go back, pick it up and put it in the bin which cost me a few seconds. Repeating that move would take me about a minute at my current stiffness level though!

You bastard. <winky thing> just when i feel I’m making progress with a nice 14k very hilly trail run yesterday you throw that into the chat.

I’m putting this down to charlatan weighing less than Kipchoge and utilising the latest in carbon shoe technology…..

Only about a stone more and about six inches taller, but my shoes cost 25 quid!

Bit worried now. My sister (three years younger, twice as much training, about 50 times as much race time in recent years) got within 11 minutes of my time today. T

Trouble with sciatica lately. Might have struggled to beat her.

Particularly delighted to have been an hour and twenty six minutes faster than the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Just been twatted by an angry goose while out running on the towpath at Coseley. Will probably have a lovely bruise on my arm later.

So 34km trail race today from Corfe Castle to Weymouth, course was absolutely brutal and the rapidly increasing temp from 11am meant temps of 21 degrees for the rest of the day which was let’s just say sub optimal!! Managed to get it done in just under 6 hours but a brutal introduction. Also helps if you’re not a twat like me and go the wrong way adding 3k to the 34. Anyway still alive and next race a 50k in the Peak District next on the agenda in July.

Well done mate, great effort. Sorry to hear that you went the wrong way, 34km is long enough.

They feel like they belong to somebody else. Somebody very old, with rickets!

First one is always the hardest though I guess.
