surprised Tielemans isn't starting. Clearly Bailey and Diaby will be asked to use their pace to get behind the Newcastle back line. Solid bench

Better font choice and overall design on the team graphic. Confidence has gone up just because of that.

Don't like it. It should  have been Tielemans instead of bailey starting.  Far too risky selection  playing them up there.

Good to see the kids on the bench.

It is, but also kind of necessary. Would look a lot stronger with Moreno, J Ramsey, Buendia, and Dendonker on there. That said, from what we saw in preseason I wouldn't mind any of those there today getting a run out.

Yes, more of an attacking line-up than I expected.

I think I'd rather start Bailey and have Tielemans to come on and shake things up if things go wrong. Not sure I'd be filled with confidence if we're losing and have to look to Bailey to change things.

Best form of defence is attack and thier defence are huge but slow. Could be another tactical masterclass.
We also have have plenty of variety off the bench

Come on you villa boys

I suppose Bailey has been involved in some important goals and assists but he looks like me trying to play football with the kids on the municipal pitch. Useless, chasing shadows and likely to break an arm or an ankle.

He'll probably have a blinder now.

It's weird we've spent £60-odd million on centre halves and neither is currently displacing Mings or Konsa.  Fair play to those two.

Anyway, good to be back watching football. UTV.

Title: Re: Newcastle vs Aston Villa match watching party

Would've preferred a box midfield today or at least McGinn out wide.

If it's Diaby on the left he's going to need to track back constantly as we'll be on the backfoot a fair bit with Almiron and Trippier that side.

Fair to say I'd be happy with a point today. Good thing is you look at both teams and it looks very evenly matched back to front so when was the last time you could say we arguably had as good a team as one that's just finished 4th in the premier league?

Don't seem switched on anywhere.

I've muted the sound of my stream as it's been a wankfest since before kickoff. Next step will be to throw my phone into the lake
Fucking hell mate. Disappointed in you in that you are not throwing an octopus in someone’s face.

Tielemans for Bailey is a very very very obvious half time substitution.

After awful first 10 minutes I actually think we've been o.k but we badly need some control in midfield, odd to see an Emery team not playing game at its own tempo.

Diaby looks like that long hoped for attack upgrade, not sure Ollie has the quality to link up effectively with him so that's the next issue but can look at that next summer.

Remain hopeful but we can't be going 3-1 down to this lot.

Mental Half. Gutted to lose Mings. I thought we weren't alive to Newcastle at the start of the game but we've grown into it without ever bossing it.

Watkins should have scored, Dougie could have done better with his header from the corner, Bailey needs to come off.

Bailey clearly isn't good enough for where we want to be.

Tielemans for Bailey at h-t.

Tight game, both sides absolute mansions of shit, they got away with one more so they're winning.

Being let down by individual moments really, most of them from Bailey, but Cash and Watkins nominated for worst supporting (Ollie's just having one of his 'only buildup' games, it's like tantric striker play).

We're so cursed with injuries - I really really hope for the best for Tyrone but it looked bad.

I mean back then we lost terribly to a team who were everyone's favourites to go down and despite exceeding those expectations they still finished 16th.

Like them or not but Newcastle deservedly finished top 4 and have good players all over the park and can win in different ways.

We are still in it and the disruption with the serious injuries isn't helping either although Pau has looked composed on the ball which is nice to see at least.

Not our finest half so far. Their 2nd a mile offside. I haven't missed the diving, play acting or general crapness of officiating and commentary. Still in it but team looks bit off it so far. Bad injury to Tyrone too.

Hmm - seemed to lack the calm and composure we have had normally under Unai.

We have been bullied by them, which hasn't helped, and having Mings crocked for the foreseeable means that could be an issue this season.

Mings is a big blow - unfortunately, similar to last season we make a couple big signings but then lose a couple of players through injury.  Seems to be very much 2 steps forward 1 back in the squad building front.

How Andy Hinchliffe gets work I have no idea.

Still well in this - but our squad has taken a real battering this week.

2 bad goals to give away but we should really be winning this. We look the much better footballing team but in front of goal it’s that lethal edge that we badly need.
Look good in possession but that injury to Mings is a proper kick between the legs. We have to invest there and if that’s at the expense of anywhere else then so be it.
What have we done to deserve these injuries? Still, we are still in it and if Bailey comes into the game then we have a chance.

Mings - gutted for him, but now we get to see Pau.

Bailey - waste of space.  Emery must see something in training, but my goodness he’s bad.

Cash should be on a yellow as should Kamara.

Emi better be careful especially if we need to time waste at the end

Newcastle are exactly what they were last year - ugly and effective.  We had a poor half but could easily have scored 3.  Fine margins.  I'm sick to death of us having these injuries, but Torres has looked very very assured so far in a tough introduction to this league.

Terrible first ten minutes. Just appalling. After that, we got a bit of control.  Mings got injured & the game became slow & scrappy. Already made my feelings about Bailey known. But he needs swapping for Philogene-Bidace. Especially after he tore all of their full backs a new on4 in America....

Shout out to to the ref for being a ******. Im not sure if there is actually a new initiative to allow contact but looking at that bleach blonde haired ballerina tumble over his own feet & the ref give foul after foul, along with that Brazilian with a battleships board shaved into his hair, it seems they can fall over & get decisions after having their safe space invaded, yet they are allowed to leave a foot in, or push & pull our players when they miss the ball & the ref allows it... Not to mention Cash being blocked from running back to make all 15 of their players who were in offside positions, to actually be offside...

******.

Granted the Martinez situation is debatable & with their fucking mouths whining at the stadium like its them thats been hard done by, this ref is just the man to crumble further under fan pressure & try & redress the balance as the home fans see it...

Again, ******...

We look like a side thst lost a key cog in the team 48 hours before kick off to a sickening injury, and then got another early in the game.

The ref spent the first half an hour giving them everything.

We've been awful since. The second goal should be a foul on Cash by Burn.

Emery will sort it I'm sure. But we've had a truly awful couple of days, and probably the hardest away game you can imagine to start.

Far too complacent the first 15 minutes and we’ve never really recovered. Only likely positive aspect is that it might be Bailey’s last start for a good while.

Don't be too sure of that.

It's really tough to see and I agree on the leadership. However we can't just write off seasons because key players are getting bad injuries as believe it or not but other sides get plenty of them and have to cope.

We certainly need a new CB in next two weeks, hopefully one with leadership skills as I think Konsa's going to shrink without Ming's presence alongside him.

Sigh, Emery gone in November and relegation battle to look forward to?

Hopefully we can count on our usual donation of 3 points from the Toffees, and just write today off. When things go wrong for us, they properly go wrong.

4-1 does not flatter them, it bats eyelids while persuading them that they are Barcelona 2010.  We have missed absolute sitters at crucial moments and gifted at least one of the goals, and the ref has been awful in key moments.   It's in the key moments that this stuff matters the most.

I am looking forward to playing these cloggers at home and smashing them again, because they are the most limited 'top 4' team I've seen since Moyes's Everton.

Wilson coming on for Isak and scoring himself is exactly the sort of depth we lack in the final third.

Pretty sure he scored as many as Ollie in the end last season.

I like Watkins, but the Jawdies have two strikers better than him.

Add in Almiron who hit double figures last season and them signing Barnes with his 12 goals for relegated Leicester.

I admire the optimism in people predicting top 4 but we simply don't have enough players in final third who are credible scoring threats, Bailey with just 5 goals a season certainly isn't going to cut it and he'll be back on the bench after today's effort.

Add in Buendia out until March, Archer not really been fancied and Duran injured for all of pre season and very unproven and we are far too light for a side actually in european competition.

We need someone else in on top of Zaniolo seemingly being signed as a Buendia replacement.

I said at the start play like this and they will get half a dozen. They still might.

No use having 300m midfield (can only play 3 of them) if Cash and Bailey are starting.

Traits from pre Emery where we’d choose the easy option and give in. I hope it shows Emery we are nowhere near top 6 and have characters susceptible to this.
We need a goal scorer, another centre half and a midfielder capable of doing the dirty work to get anywhere near it.
If we have ambitions to compete then I’d like to see some decisions made in the next few weeks.

I think, I hope, that we are about to find out what Emery is made of. Brings to mind the Toon pasting we took when our manager told the players to make their own way home.

Disappointing , fitness wise and organisationally the last 30 mins we were all over the place. Don’t think you can underestimate the impact of Mings injury on them. Affected them for the rest of the game, a few scrambled minds out there  and his loss will be huge on and off the pitch.
Long season to come. We have the right manager and structure. We’ll learn from this and improve quickly as the team gels.

Why the fuck didn’t we go for Barnes?

“He doesn’t work hard enough”

*Leon Bailey starts*

We only lost 2-1 with Bailey on. We lost 3-0 without him.

Think about it.

I hope we don’t try and pin this on the Mings injury, that would be a cop out.

People having digs at Watkins who kept going, created the equaliser and was better than most of the team is interesting …
Kamara gave up, Tielemans was atrocious and the defence was even worse. I think we will bounce back though. Been a tough week and need to get behind the team at Villa Park next week.

Agreed. If losing a player, however influential leads to capitulation then we are in huge trouble. This is where you expect others to step up not give in.
I hope this is a blessing in disguise and Emery takes no prisoners. We’ll be fine and Emery will
sort it but he’ll need the cash to do it.

To be fair though they've lost two team mates to really bad injuries in 3 days. Yes someone should have rallied them and shown some better leadership skills after Mings went off but all in all pretty awful circumstances they've found themselves in. Shouldn't be used as an excuse for a 5-1 drubbing mind, but hopefully we can just write today off and get things back on track next week.

In footballing circles you damage limit at a 3 goal advantage - should have been a lot better in defence but early days

I agree, Bailey isn’t the problem, so I don’t get all the angst.
I think the biggest issue today was Cash getting the run around.

We haven't played well at all, but at least we're still in it.

This was at half time.

Full time.

I think I’m going to try fishing or train spotting

Same.

I might take up dentistry. On myself.

It’d be more fun.
