Title: Newcastle United vs Aston Villa pre match thread
Post by: Smirker on August 03, 2023, 10:11:20 PM
Kick off Saturday 12th August 17:30

First game of the season. It's a big one. Tough to call but I just believe in  Unai and I know he will have been working so hard to create a plan that will get the three points.

Come on Villa!

The way we are setting up is going to cause major headaches for opponents.
Like Leeds under Bielsa but with a rock solid defence . I've only had 2 large glasses of wine when posting.

Regardless or irregardless of result, i can't remember a time of being so excited about the opening game.

I think it's going to be a ripper, and genuinely I'm not that bothered if we win, just how we perform.

Trust in unai, i love this club

I’m the same. It’s a really tough game, but I’m convinced as we work our way into the season we’ll see some fantastic football and results, and if we don’t win it won’t dent my optimism.

Opening games can be an odd indicator of seasons to come,so there's no need to be overly concerned about the result. Under this manager I have confidence he will put things right. If someone isn't performing we have plenty of experienced cover except at either end of the pitch.

1-1.

Awful record up there. Felt they were still ultra physical even with their different shape in the friendly. Hard in the press and tackle, direct in their play. Very tough game to start with.

Thirded, with the third goal coming late on the break when we’re under huge pressure.

I even agree with Paul’s scorers.

They then have Man City and Liverpool, can see a poor start for them and pressure building before they pull it round.

He was, but that's been his only decent performance in pre-season, he was abysmal against Walsall and Fulham and mostly anonymous against Brentford and Lazio, with the addition last night of him having one of his temper tantrums and risking getting sent off in a friendly.

I'd have Philogene ahead of him right now, along with the names above. I'd nudge Bailey slightly ahead of him because last night there was a bit of chemistry between Bailey and Diaby which I think could be useful to us at times.

To further my point, I find it impossible to make a prediction ahead of the last pre season freindly where, and hopefully it doesn't happen, a key player (well the keeper really) could pick up a knock. It feels like predicting the Everton game before this one to me.

I think he might play a three of Tielmans, Kamara and Luiz against these, with and Doaby interchangeable either side of Watkins.

Think he’ll want to try and dominate that central area of the pitch.

                             Martinez

Cash.               Konsa.     Mings.           Digne

9:00am on 13th June the fixtures came out. 9:01 Unai will have started his preparations. Whatever happens you know he will have left no stone unturned and will send a properly coached and prepared team out to win the game. I'm not making any predictions, but even if we don't win it won't be for a lack of effort or preparation on the manager's behalf.

Really excited by how we've played pre-season, but we've absolutely tore this lot apart the last couple of times we've faced them.

Don't fancy us up there first game of season tbh.... Would probably take a draw, then get on with gathering that huge haul of points, starting against Everton at home.

I will be very interested to see how Unai will counter the long ball over the top of our defence which seemed to be the only major weakness in our team.

We begin every season in the top 2 or 3, dependent on whether AFC Bournemouth are in the league - it's up to us to lose that spot, an annual quirk of fate that I'm sure has not gone unnoticed by Super Unai.

So. One nil to the Arsenal at Forest, Wet Spam will get a draw at Bournemouth. I therefore expect us to be top of the table at close of play with +2GD after a 3-0 to us against the Jaudis.

Going to be 15 minutes added on in this given how long both keepers take goal kicks when their teams aren't losing.

Be prepared for that, endless injury time in the lower leagues today so refs will follow that directive to the letter until around October.

I don't know what he wants to do in the middle of defence but I think Digne should be starting at LB until Moreno is fit again. Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne should be the back 4 for Newcastle anyway.

Let's be honest, it couldn't be a much tougher start and while it has been a good pre-season it doesn't really count for anything other than give an idea of individual form. No Torres at left back amd Bailey left back on the bench is the big take and I hope it's heeded.
The first game of the season always throws up some barmy results and we are a very good side.

I’m not sure they both sit around talking about what the ticket price should be

I know they’re ultimately responsible for stuff but it’s called delegation

Of course that’s a bit tongue-in-cheek and, I’m not referring to the actual owners. Just the people that are in charge of pricing, who I think are looking at any opportunity to get more out of the fans eg The Terrace View.

I think we have obviously overtaken Leicester City's position as a threat to the regular top 4 or 5.
Newcastle are just another Manchester City and Chelsea type.
Villa will be doing as well, if not better, than Leicester when they were winning trophies and threatening the top 4. We may do this in reverse order, like top 5, then FA Cup, then League, but it's an upward curve, and I'm very excited to put Newcastle in their place next week.

My two concerns are Barnes and Wilson. others that can handle them.

Had a quick read of a pre-match thread on one of their forums, most think that neither will start.
I like what you say!
Please make it so! Both should start in my opinion, but I assume Newcastle like to have 10 men behind the ball. With that brute Dan Burn getting sent off for fouling our players. Emery wouldn't look once at him has no finesse belongs in lower leagues not the Champions League.
Emery will be roasting Howe once again!
I'm hoping to hear Peter Drury on commentary for sky sports
he's fantastic.

And best wishes to everyone who is going to support Saturday. I've never gone to St James or even Newcastle, and I doubt I'll ever visit that part of England but I've been told the away fans get placed in the higher tiers.
Well to me that's a sign we're above them!

Up the Villa!

With the exception of the season behind closed doors, for too many years we've started the season slowly & left ourselves with an up hill task. I'm hoping this season will be different.

We're a very good side, with a top class manager. Nobody will brush us aside like they did in previous years.

Newcastle away is a tough start. Let's make a statement & let the media know we mean business.

My team for Newcastle:

Martinez

Digne
Mings
Konsa
Cash

McGinn
Douglas
Kamara

Ramsey
Watkins
Diaby

Subs: Olson 🫣, Torres, Carlos, Tielemens, Buendia, Coutinho, Archer

That bench is STRONG.

Okokok. I've tempted fate by booking the same hotel in Newcastle that I stayed in after the 6-0. I'm tempted to wear the chequered-sided shirt from that season too, and go for a revenge motif.

I think we will concede, I reckon it may take a few games to get our defence as hardened as it was at the end of last season, but I think we will get something. I keep thinking 3-1 to us...

They were set to press us because as Howe said in his press conference, 'that's how we play every week'. So we flipped it and Martinez was bypassing the defenders and their press by playing it out to McGinn/Ramsey/Watkins and they were never able to adjust to it.

Agreed. I think 8 spots are set in stone with 3 places potentially up for grabs:

Martinez

Cash
Konsa
Mings
Digne or Torres

McGinn
Kamara or Tielemans
Luiz
Buendia or Philogene

Diaby
Watkins

for the 'ors' I think they come as sets as well, if Torres starts we'll want more natural width so Philogene gets the nod but it also means we can be slightly more progressive in the middle so Tielemans comes in for the extra passing rage and to provide another threat shotting from distance.

They will definitely target Matty Cash with quick cross field passes to try and get Barnes in behind him. Something I hope Cash has worked on improving over the summer, brutal at losing the flight of those kind of balls. Should be a cracking game. First game of the season and I wouldnt be surprised to see us sit in and take them on the counter.

Can't see it being anything but the starting line up from last weekend to be honest, with the only real question being whether Bailey starts out wide.  J Ramsey missing means that we can't really play the narrow 4 across midfield which worked so well against them at our place last season, as there isn't really anyone who can play that role in the same way.

The Guardian appear to think that the biggest talking point ahead of our game is Nick Pope's treatment and recovery from a broken finger.

Jesus fucking Christ.
The only mention we get is "While Emery ended up at Aston Villa". FFS!

Everything I saw in preseason says Digne should be starting LB while Moreno is out.

I don't know how/when we work Torres into the squad, but with a really tough opening game like this, it's not the time to be unsure in defence.

One of Cash or Digne won’t be playing as Unai seems intent on the 3 centre back formation when defending so either Konsa or Paul will be the FB come CB
Also wondering if he might surprise by playing Phil

Agreed. When we beat them convincingly at Villa Park, SJG played high and wide on the right and really targeted Burn as a weak link in their backline - though they were all poor that day.

If they have Targett at LB, then I think he will also struggle with the physicality and nous of SJM.

I would also fancy Diaby and Watkins taking a wide-ish left position and running at Trippier - he is a booking waiting to happen. UTV

If Torres plays we won't start tielemans tucked in on the left, we'd go with someone who gives us natural width on that side.

When we have possession our shape turns into a front 5 of the 'wide' midfielders, 1 full back and the 2 forwards, that's why Bailey has played so often because he gives us that width on the right to balance out Moreno on the left. If we flip that shape we need a bailey on the left, so either him swapped sides or philogene makes more sense.

Has Nice Guy Eddie been saying nice things about us at his "presser" this morning?

I'll answer usself, shall I...

Quote
On Aston Villa, who Newcastle drew 3-3 with in the Premier League Summer Series last month, and his opposite number Unai Emery...

"If you look at last season and the job that he did - and we obviously encountered one of those wins that they got towards the end of last season - I thought they were excellent against us. I think he's done a magnificent job, I think his players have done a magnificent job as well and they narrowly missed out on getting close to us.

"We know it's going to be difficult. We've played against them again in pre-season, so I think we know each other quite well and I think there's a lot of healthy respect between the two teams. It's the Premier League, though - there's several teams in our bracket, as in vastly improved and looking upwards, so we're not alone. That's where the Premier League is such a special league, because there's no guarantee for any of those clubs that that momentum will continue."

If you recall Watkins, Moreno, and Ramsey terrorised Trippier that game. From the first minute where Watkins hit the post cutting in from the left. So Diaby on Trippier is a good call. McGinn on Burns on the right was another great move. It stretched their defence across the pitch and we really exploited the gaps.

They have home advantage though and it is probably one of the places you do not want to start your season. We imploded up there last year, I think it will be different, a proper test first up.

Schar is supposedly fit now, or he's been training with the team since Tuesday, so interesting to see if he make the starting 11 or not. Could be another avenue to target if he's not 100%, or there's someone of a lesser standard playing instead of him.

I think he’s a great manager but Newcastle overachieved last year
This year the fan base will be expecting more
The first bad run they get it will be the same old story ‘ he’s taken us as far as he can’ and they will want a big name in
Pressure will build and he’ll be gone before the season is out

In fairness, one of the things we gained with Uni is his ability to attract players because of his gravitas and the respect he holds within Europe, Howe doesn’t have that and that will increase the pressure for a bigger name

I’m putting money on it which will pay for my season-ticket next year

We will have to be spot on this afternoon with our defensive high line that we keep. Isak, along with both Barnes and Gordon are pretty pacy players so I do see Newcastle playing balls over the top.
Preferably, I would like us to go with a back four to start with both Cash and Digne on either side.

I do think we have enough to go there and win, so I predict a 2-1 Villa win.

I would line up something like:

                            Martinez
Cash      Konsa                       Mings       Digne

                             Kamara

         McGinn           Luiz          Tielemans

                   Diably

                             Watkins

Records are only records because one team is usually better than the other. We've got just as good a team as they do, and while Howe is a very good manager, Emery is better. Even if you allow say, a 10% leaning to them because of home support, I'd still argue it's only 60/40 in favour of them at best.

We went to Pizza Hut while waiting for the hotel room to be ready, and the waitress asked if we were here for the football. We said yes, and she said “fingers crossed for a win”, and my mate said “yeah, for the Villa”.

She looked at us and just said “I see” and walked off.  ;D

Didn't the claret & blue facepaint and jester hats give your allegiance away?

Yep it’s a dreadful record. Although Everton are an odd team to list there.

Well, the fact we used cutlery should have at least hinted that we weren’t from Newcastle.

Since losing at home to Chelsea at the end of October 2021 the only sides to leave there with 3 points are Liverpool (twice), Man City and Arsenal.

Diaby aside, the same team as last season.

Really hope Bailey steps up here. We'll need him to if we want a win.

Good to see Philogene and Kellyman on the bench, well-deserved based on pre-season.

Only one keeper on the bench? Is Unai feeling okay?

Apparently Diaby bought the best out of Bailey when they played together before.
