See the Social (sorry Aston Inn) have now increased match day membership to £15 early bird for existing members and then £20 after the one week's period of grace.
The Tavern have increased up to £90 (do you get a padded seat).
Crazy
-
£15-£20 for a whole season is not bad really. £90 is ridiclous though.
-
Someone on this forum mentioned a while ago that Aston Tavern charge £3 entry so £90 for 19 games is a reasonable increase considering inflation and other pressures on hospitality business.
-
Those venues have to maximise profit (hark at me) when they can, that area has little or no business during the close season so it's difficult to criticise.
-
Not for me. I'll continue to run the gauntlet of the Zulus and drink in town. Be interesting to see what impact Villa Live has on the Tavern/Inn once it's up and running.

It might have a positive impact in that I used to go in both but now don’t as I can’t be arsed to pay in then stand in a queue for ages, Live might alleviate a bit of that ?

what's Villa live?

The proposed venue to be incorporated into the new North Stand.

cheers

Still free to enter venues about. The Villa Tavern is my preference after match and The Safe Harbour now has a lovely outside area.
-
We take the kids to the pitch on trinity road for a kick about and take a few beers when weather is ok. If not it’s drink in the Holte Suite which is chilled out and has plenty of room.
-
Ninety quid? Fucking Hell. Absolute chancers, won't be drinking there.
-
I'm curious about this myth that we don't drink in town. I usually go straight to Witton when arriving at New Street. Do we have large numbers of Villa fans drinking in the centre before and after a game? I know a lot of our support is North Brum but the trains back into the city are rammed after a game. I'm just interested. Is it complete bollocks on the Noses part? Obviously on derby day we would be segregated.
-
The myth is that we don't go there at any other time.

Every pub is full of Villa .We do the rounds of town, from Colmore Row to John Bright Street, with roads in between. Also JQ is all Villa.

It is just that........ A Myth. Pubs on or just off New St are usually brimming with villa on match day.
As is the South of Brum being solid blues. Try catching a train from Any of the stations on the south side of the cross city line on a match day & itll be bursting to overflowing with villa.
-
I knew the myth about Villa fans all being non Brummies which was hysterically funny, stupid, and patently untrue but the one.about drinking in town had me curious. I'd presumed they meant on match days for the Noses.

What are they like now? I was never too keen on the Diggers but the Villa Tavern was a lovely old-fashioned place.

The Diggers has had a lot of work done to it and is quite pleasant. Basic fayre beer wise, but a nice relaxed atmosphere pre-match and as I mentioned, the beer garden is nice. The Tavern is same as really, but I've always liked it. It can be uncomfortably packed for an hour or so after the match, but then it's fine. DJ on after every game.

I drink in the Villa Tavern matchdays and it does get uncomfortably full for a couple of hours before the game and for about an hour after. It's actually my local boozer and I know it struggles out of season so I'm happy to put up with it being rammed for a few hours on a match day to keep the tills ringing. Without our home games it wouldn't survive.

Thanks both.

Yes it is, opposite the main gates of Witton Cemetery on Moor Lane. Was past there last year and ut was surrounded by shuttering. Spent a decent part of my late teens and early 20's playing 'Arrers for them.

Used to drink in the Tavern every game till around 2007 I think, the nice couple that ran it were kicked out (the bloke was my folks neighbours son) and some right rabble took over, it went south quickly and we switched to the Bartons.
But it was a bloody nightmare trying to get a pint in there most of last season, and I was thinking of trying the Tavern again as I drive past it on my way in. You've put me off now!
-
Both are rarities - the Diggers because it was empty for so long and re-opened rather than being demolished or converted, the Tavern because there are so few surviving inner city back street locals.

You posted that in the manner of how the Holte End would chant, would be amusing to sing that to them....if we ever meet again.

Town is also full of Villa even when we play them too. They don't have much to go with, so they choose outrageous myths.

It's still a decent old pub. It's mainly the bar that gets rammed but it is pretty small. The room at the back is used as a real ale bar on matchdays and that never seems to be too overcrowded.
-
Thankfully, my ageing waterworks have made this sort of problem academic for me. A couple of pints before the game, and I'm spending the first half in the bogs. I envy you iron-bladdered buggers.

Funnily enough I read it to this tune. Hopefully in a few years when we're conquering Europe again.

Absolutely. That's why I see it as my duty to drink as much beer in the Tavern as I can. I even told my mrs that I see it as my duty to preserve our local heritage.

What's The Aston Social (Inn) like these days? Haven't been there for donkeys years after we decided it was just too much hassle, overly packed and found the blokes on the door to be a bit unpleasant, kissing the arse of shall we say, the more unsavoury characters.

For those who may be renewing membership at the Aston Social. We went down today and renewed, some form of Id is required, so if you are renewing multiple cards get some Id for the cards, the young lady behind the counter suggested that a photo of the Id ( Bus pass, Driving licence etc) sent to your phone or “ what’s app” to your phone as a last resort may help. You will also have to fill in another form of details for each card, in case changes of address, phone number etc.. so take a pen. Hope this helps H&Vers .
-
Birmingham will obviously have more supporters in town/digbeth as it's very easy to walk from their stadium into the city centre/digbeth,which to be fair has a nice selection of bars these days.
Birmingham City centre seems busier than ever now on a Saturday afternoon with youngsters and those in their late 40s-60s seeming to opt for afternoon drinking since COVID.
There never really seems crowds of either supporters on a match day in the centre these days the odd group here and there but fairly shocking compared to other big city centres. You'd barely know we had football clubs walking around on a match day.
Liverpool ,for instance on a match day is full of supporters and a real feeling in the air that there's a match on . You'd never know in Birmingham

We also lack a good sports bar in the city centre. I find on the continent every bar you walk in will have football on even if it's a replay and shirts on the wall. In Birmingham you struggle to find a good place to watch the football / scores these days . Very, very depressing

Brum is full of pubs that show sport.

Unfortunately they all empty when Fred walks in!

Walk up Temple St. or Bennetts Hill and Joint Stock its full of fans on a match day

Drank in Town most of last season and there were Villa fans everywhere, plus fans of the team we're playing. The most popular pubs have door staff which they wouldn't do if it wasn't required. As for Liverpool, they have a large amount of tourists attending the match who will be staying in the Centre. We avoided pubs showing the early game 'cos they were too busy and it was a pain to get served.
-
Yes there's obviously fans around but not as in the whole pub is full of villa fans singing and so on just small groups here and there.
The way you make it sound it's like there's a sea of claret and blue on Temple Street.
That area has become VERY popular now even the Trocadero is in with the cool kids. Didn't think that would happen 10 years ago.
The council could do more to advertise that we have clubs in the city , especially us being a premiership club. It's a shame the city centre store closed down as a lack of shop presence is also very bad. Liverpool and Everton are next to each other (I think) and obviously Man Utd / City have a big pull in their Centre.
Even a shop with a cafe/bar could work although that could be a target of rival fans
-
Liverpool City centre is absolutely tiny compared to Birmingham. The towns and cities of the North are villages compared to Brum.
Liverpool on a match day has hotels rammed with day trippers and glory merchants. I know, as I work there and walk up Castle Street with Irish and Norwegians absolutely everywhere. It's why they can charge £750 for a corporate match ticket on a Champions League game for what is my mates normal season ticket seat, in the equivalent of the lower Witton.
Now there's some shifting of the working class for you to actually moan about.
-
It's almost as if arguably the two biggest clubs in the world are there, and a massive amount of their crowds are tourists staying for the weekend.
-

Sadly, we have to be. Get them here and get their money.

There's no real space for them these days at Villa Park in any great numbers, hence the rebuild of the North I suppose. Liverpool and Man United though definitely synergise the weekend break with the "traditional" English football exprience. They don't mind paying top dollar for a ticket and buying tat out the club shop, much in the same way as we do I suppose if in the US taking in baseball or whatever. Just because.
We're outstripped commercially to such a huge extent and as you say, it's what we have to do and do more of if we want to try to shrink the gap.
-
Look at BHX on a Saturday in the season for proof. The biggest number of supporters traveling from Ireland is Liverpool, then Manchester United with Villa a distant third.
-
Unfortunately they all empty when Fred walks in!
That must be it!
-
Drank in town for a few games last season and saw a few old faces. There seems to be a bit of a shift towards drinking in the city which is due to the dwindling amount of pubs around the ground. If the owners plans come to fruition it will inevitably bring a larger amount of people travelling into the city and using the hotels. I welcome that and look forward to meeting Villa fans from far and wide. The more the merrier as it's an indicator of our growth as a club.

Some people like to go in a pub and socialize rather than watching sport. It's fun you should try it sometime.

Personally, home or away, if I walk into a boozer and it's rammed with fans singing, chucking beer about and five deep at the bar I'll turn around and go somewhere else.
-
we now park up Holborn Hill and have occasionally got an Uber to the Bartons, we used to park up near the Manor Tavern and also walked to the ground for a beer, but I have never been in the Villa Tavern....we might try it...what is it like in there ?

Villa Tavern is a cracking pub. It's been covered by myself and others on here. It gets very busy in the main bar for a couple of hours before the game and an hour after. Good atmosphere. No food though except cobs.
-
The Edge......shhhhhh!
Seriously though, I really like the place.
-
Spoons at One Stop in Perry Barr is always packed with us on a matchday, decent atmosphere in there aswell from 1sh/6pm for midweek. No throwing pints into the air/letting off flares or whatever the kids are doing nowadays in theme bars to put on Insta.

I’ve been going to Villa Park since the mid 70s and have never been to the Bartons
I really should get round to paying a visit sometime

I say it regularly but it's strange to think that when me and the late lamented Mac first went in the Barton's there were less than a dozen post-match drinkers.

Just as 'El Floridita' was a lot quieter before Hemingway started drinking there, despite their rather fine daiquiris. :)

There were many more options back then I think. The first time we went there was for a H+V post match meet upstairs.
I'm still having nightmares.

Anyone drink in Shanahans and what's it like?
The Albion Vaults is OK for a matchday if you fancy a brisk 30 minute walk to the ground.

Shanahans is decent. They've put a rooftop bar in there which is pretty good when the weather's nice.

The beer is normally decent in my view although you can always do better in the Black Country.

They serve anything in any glass when busy, some may say understandable but i cant get on with it.
The service is dreadful.
But I do enjoy it there and the food is amazing

I was up the Green Duck the other night before going to the Seven Stars. Nice stuff all around.

Bit of a stretch for Villa Park mind

I think we've had a pre match pint in the Bartons for the last 4/5 years I'd say but have given up because of the waiting times to get served.
Recently we've just been turning up at the ground and drank a couple of pints of Purity at £5 a pop.
Bartons food is very impressive though.

The service is dreadful.
But I do enjoy it there and the food is amazing

If you mean the Barton's, it's the classic victim of its own success but they don't help themselves by simply not being geared up to be a football pub.

I was up the Green Duck the other night before going to the Seven Stars. Nice stuff all around.
Bit of a stretch for Villa Park mind
Not if you hit them before getting the train to town!

Now if the thread was Drinking by Stourbridge Junction you'd have a case.
Always jealous of the Bitters by me who have the luxury of having their own station on the line.

The one and only thing that the B-Lose have in their sad existence is a number of decent boozers in Digbeth, within walking distance of the swamp and not paid entry.

I used to drink in Digbeth regularly 20 odd years ago, particularly after home and away games and you'd rarely see a 'Nose.
I popped into the Kerryman before a gig at the Institute pre pandemic and was horrified to see references to the Rags about the place. I repeated that visit in May and am pleased to report that said references had vanished.

I was once verbally abused for us taking over "their train" to go from Stour to their shithole. They are odd fish.

Haven't lived in Brum for a long time now, but when I did the Yenton in Erdington was always rammed with Villa Fans. A quick five minute walk to Chester Road train station and you could be in Aston ten minutes later if you timed it right

Always found Theatrix decent , we usually try a few around there . Pure craft , Theatrix , The Colmore , Flight Club , Cosy Club and Lost and Found , The Good Intent and Old joint Stock .

Can't see why not , pleasant enough isn't it.
Many people buy Beers from the shop next door to Alibaba Fish & Chip shop and stand out the front . With the cost of living I expect many more will take up that option rather then paying pub or ground prices . The last lager I had at Villa Park was awful
-
They do also have a fanzone bar at Trinity Road outside now so there’s an option. The queues aren’t anywhere near as bad as inside either.

I might take more than a few drinks in my living room to soak up the football on Saturday.

Yes quite a few do it, although you'll need to find somewhere quiet to have a pee. Please take you cans and bottles to a bin though, pisses me off when I see them lying around.

Yeah, that boils my piss. There's a massive bin next to the burger stand outside the Holte entrance. No excuses.

It's gonna be hot so remember to drink plenty of fluids. ;)

It was slow today underneath the holte. I went downstairs on 35 mins to get a beer and the kids some water, i got served 5 mins before the players came back out.
Maybe the not the right week being so hot, but i cant understand why they dont look at how many Heineken or Amstels are sold at each bar and pre pour a load of pints pre match and a few mins before the half time rush.
-
They should just make it bottled beer only and be done with it.
-
I doubt glass bottles are a good idea in grounds.

My son and I did this today for the first time. Very pleasant until some twat started puking up by us and then the chavs walked through openly snorting coke.

In yesterday's heat came more fan abuse with parking at the social at £8 - up £2, a £90 matchday pass in the tavern, lack of staff in the Holte Suite, no selling of match day passes in the social (too busy) but you could go in to what is for all intense and purposes a public bar. Oh the joys of being a football fan

The service in the Bartons was poor again, it didn't seem that busy either.

It's not so much that more related to the way the staff man the bar. It happens in lot's of places, you're waiting your turn patiently but the staff serve everyone in a haphazard manner leading to someone strolling up and getting served immediately. It did get a bit fractious at times, the heat didn't help. To be fair, the staff were grafting but there's no decent organisation.

It was a bit of a struggle getting served even when the crowd had thinned out. The middle aged Thai barman (not Wichai) seemed particularly slow.

I've given up on the place, we were going to head in for a pint after but we went to Hockley Social instead, which had loads of room, good beer, food and fine music. What more do you want?
-
Never have that much of a problem after the game. I get two pints when I first arrive, if you're a quick walker there shouldn't be much of queue. By the time I'm ready for a third pint the queue has usually thinned out. It is a nightmare about a quarter of an hour after I arrive which is usually about when I'm ready for pint two if I don't double up on my first visit.

This doesn't concern drinking near *our* ground, but it's relevant if you ever want to drink on the way to Millwall, Palace, Fulham, Brentford or Chelsea (depending on where you start from).
I loathe knee-jerk anti-London nonsense. It's a wonderful city that I've loved spending much of my adult life living in. These pricks are slowly killing it.

It will be a roaring success. There are enough wankers who live in Clapham alone to keep it going for half a century.
Edit: these are the same people who always order a complicated burger at any pub they visit. I hate them. They also will give unsolicited advice on which pubs (exclusively in the Clapham/Fulham areas) serve the best burgers in London. I hate them.

There was one on the link bit between Grand Central and The Bullring. That went on to be replaced by one of those cafe's that lets fucking cats roam free around the place. Great idea, any meal is greatly enhanced by some moggy licking it's bollocks in front of you or walking away with it's tail in the air, it's pencil sharpener on full display.

Not many places you can go to read a discussion about pre match pints and find yourself reading about cats arseholes. Love it here.

Cats arsehole the new £8 a pint 7% craft beer served in the new chrome based bar…the Dogs Bollocks, laptops and airpods available in every dome based pod….talking shit to other punters and having a laugh about any old shit, absolutely frowned upon and will result in being barred if this gross violation of beardy coolness is consistently ignored.
Welcome to the world of gentrification

Utter pricks and actually unimaginative.
It looks like they've pinched a few ideas from a couple of recruitment videos from a decade ago for (self-proclaimed) cool design or tech companies.
Meanwhile they prop up their cashflow by discounting their beer in supermarkets - presumably whilst still giving a finger to 'the man'.
Allegedly, the 'Equity for Punks' scheme is a dressed up Ponzi Scheme so at some point it might all come crashing down - though sadly punters drawn into the myth will lose out.

My wife was given some meal vouchers for that place last year by one of her friends. Apparently the idea is that they are looking to re-home the cats so I guess that it is only likely to be people that are cat lovers that frequent the place. The vouchers are still unused.

I met an old workmate in the one on John Bright St a few years ago, before I was aware of the bellend that owns it and the whole thing. The beer was good and we had these large battered chicken wings in a hot sauce that were bloody lovely, it has to said.
Not been back since though.

Yes that's true. It's all down to the brewery I'm afraid. Promises not kept like getting the heating fixed for example and the prices they charge for the beer makes it impossible to earn a living wage. The only option would be a big price hike which would drive what's left of the custom away. Unless the brewery make such concessions I'd be surprised if anyone else takes it on. They have already had cash offers for the building which they may well accept but it wouldn't a pub anymore.

Called into the Manor Tavern for the first time in years. It was magic, nothing north of Carling, Brew XI on tap, and no Sky Sports. It was like being in the King Edward in 1991.

Me and the lad sticking to a couple of beers in Aston park with some cricket on today too.

was it rammed though?

We tried the Witton Arms on Saturday. Props to them for taking advantage of the fans losing the Holte Suite, but it was absolutely rammed with massive queues outside and, I wasn't a big fan of having to make a contactless payment of £3, just for the privilege of entry. One off for me.

I'll give that a try. I don't live very far from there.
-
Walked it back to town tonight and I stopped at Silhill Brewery on the way.
It's a taproom so all the equipment takes a fair bit of space. Still enough seats inside though. About half full inside which is fair enough considering it's a new venture. There was a woman singing a few songs with her guitar on the balcony above which is a nice touch. There's a marquee outside as well for those that want some fresh air.

Becoming increasingly problematical getting a beer by the ground these days - the age of the Rat pan, the Ads and the Aston Hotel etc etc etc seems another world ago.
-
Drinking in town and getting an Uber to the game is the only thing we ever even consider anymore.
A couple in the Witton after the game to see old faces and let the traffic die down and that's about it.
Such a shame we haven't made the most of places like the Aston Hotel. What a gorgeous old building.
Its just not worth pre match drinks by the ground anymore.
-
The Diggers is under new management and should be open for the Bologna match.
-
Thinking of trying somewhere new for a pre-match pint as The Witton Arms is great, though you can queue to get in and then queue for 20 minutes to get a pint.
Has the Diggers Inn re-opened on Moor Lane?
And what do people think of the Silhill Brewery Taproom? The Bartons is another under consideration. UTV
-
We're planning on trying something a bit different today as well. Might check out the Aston Social. Not been in there for years.

The proposed venue to be incorporated into the new North Stand.
Am surprised to hear about this as I had rather assumed that the plans for redevelopment on TNS had been abandoned with a view to shortly announcing a brand new 70,000 seater somewhere.
I wouldn't be at all surprised in fact if our lot have been in touch with The Brady Bunch to discuss a possible billion seat megapolis New National Stadium type of thing...
