Okay for 40 minutes. Gave up after the 2nd. Defence shit. Midfield terrible. Forwards awful. Not a good combination.
-
We had a likeable group of players for the first time in about a decade.
I am not starting to really dislike many of the players because they lose so many. I thought SG would make us tougher to beat but it seems not.
-
Piss poor. The managers tactics and style are terrible, we should have scored but you can see their confidence is on the floor.
It's stinks at the moment and I don't see much to spark any optimism at all.
-
Awful manager, awful players.
We go again
-
Not a surprise to fall behind after a mistake. But we dominated the first half. After wasting all our chances, it was inevitable we would lose. This was such a Villa performance.
-
Watkins, Ings and Konsa drop to a new level of garbage.
Thought Coutinho and Ramsey were the only ones to come out with any credit.
Why Coutinho would want to stay with us next season is anybody's guess.
-
Has to be the most ridiculous 0-4 I’ve ever seen. More possession, loads more shots, more shots on target, loads more corners, more touches in opponent’s penalty area. But looks like they’re streets ahead of us on scoreline - they ain’t!
-
Not the worse player we've had by a long shot ( although his misses were terrible today) but Ings must be one of the worst signings for years.
-
That second half looked like the the second half of a manager about to lose his job.
He’s clearly not - but fuck me that was poor second half
The players need to take a lot of responsibility - but to me if you team is less then the sum of its parts there’s something wrong and I think that’s where we are.
-

They knew exactly what they were doing and are so far ahead of us as to be embarrassing.
-
Medals to all who stayed in the ground for the last 10 mins
After missing so many opportunities in first half, you knew what would happen
Which Villa player on the pitch today, maybe Phil would get in their starting line up
-
Wasted effort. Huge talent/skill gap between the two sides. We were pathetic in front of goal and gift wrapped and shipped 4 at home. Some might say the result wasn’t a true reflection of the match, but that was an arse kicking.
I’m embarrassed, and that makes 6 losses in or our last 9. My trust in SG is waning. Fixing the problem involves adapting and new ideas, and we just keep trotting out the same general XI getting pummeled every week.
Nothing good will come of the season at this point, another wasted year of anxiety and failure to meet expectations.
It’s clearer now than ever that the spine of the team needs replacing. Another CB, a DM, a clinical finisher and a wish that Coutinho is willing to resign.. which I can’t see happening at this point. Do we trust our recruitment team and SG to get it right?
We’re safe.. right?
-
I'm sorry, but today showed the difference between having a top manager like Conte and having a PR stunt appointment like Gerrard. Spurs were under the cosh for virtually the whole first half, so he changes it. Gerrard's response? Rabbit in the headlights. He's got to go.
-
We could have been out of sight in the first half if we had converted our chances they put us to the sword second half very disappointed.
-

Their front three are. Gave us a real masterclass in movement and clinical finishing.
-
And yet…
If we had Son instead of Watkins AND Ings, even with 10 men, we could have been out of sight at half time
-
The first half was the most one-sided half I’ve seen in months but we contrived to lose it 1-0. Once they scored early on in the second we gave up. Unacceptable.
Watkins, McGinn, Luiz and Ings, Mings can all be sold. Piss poor the lot of them. Wankers.
-
Panic button pressed when we got rid of DS. Gerrard’s not the answer at the moment Chambers had to cm back in for Konsa and even the cat for McGinn

Yeah, you’re right about that. If Kane/Son and Watkins/Ings were on opposite sides we’d have gone in at half time at least 3 goals up instead of 1 behind.

On current form I would add Konsa, shocking today.

Finishing below Newcastle is a sackable offense as far as I’m concerned. Can’t get results, can’t turn the corner, can’t put a stamp on the team.. can’t be manager.
-
We were very good for 45 minutes the goal apart. We’re too narrow and it’s our downfall. We need a decent striker and a strong midfielder to improve.
-
Didn't see the game, but was it on the flanks or centrally that they ransacked us on the break?
-
Son is fucking magic. That is all.
-
We are facing the ignominy of losing 20+ games in a single season.
-
Miles off acceptable. You need to start dropping the likes of McGinn and Konsa Mr Gerrard - they are way below an acceptable level.
-

But that’s a chose we have a squad full of wingers but we won’t play them
-
It's OK the main issue we need to address is who is captain next season.
Talk of the town
Sorry but Fuck Of SteveieMe
-
Didn't see the game, but was it on the flanks or centrally that they ransacked us on the break?
It was mainly on the pitch
-
An improved 1st half on recent performances, but ultimately embarrassing for us.
After today's events I know who'd I'd rather a half time team talk from.
In May last year we beat these easily 2-1 at their ground with Villa even taking the piss by bringing on 2 debutants (Carney and JPB)
11 months on and both teams have different managers.
We chose to scour the spl for ours. They chose after a blip to appoint Conte and we are where we are; not even within touching distance again of a team who have won f-ck all in f-ck knows how many years.
Not good enough Villa today or in general.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's tough - the scoreline is harsh on us, but it's the reality and we have to accept that. I have to accept it - I'm responsible. The story of the game certainly wasn't a 4-0 game.
"It's the first time in football I've gone off at half-time 1-0 down and been really happy and proud, we were magnificent, we didn't take our chances but at half-time I said if we can continue this I have no doubt we get back into the game. The second half it flipped, Spurs' quality players made it about our backline and they punished us really heavily.
"Analysing the first goal, a long straight ball we could've defended that better, they got a bit of luck but they're ruthless in front of goal. To be 1-0 down at half-time was against the run of play, we were outstanding and the chances we've created against a top side is enough to win two or three games.
"We asked them to maintain that at half-time and we tried, we talk about defending the area around 18-yard box and Spurs punished us heavily in that area.
"We've got time - I don't know if that's a good thing, you want the next game quickly after a defeat like that which stings but I've got to pick the players up and be ready for the next game. I want us to remember that first half, we have a lot to learn and defensively in the second half we have even more to learn."
-
Good teams don't get beat 4 zip at home like that.
We've gone from turning these sort of sides over last season to full on Lamberk.
-
We are as far away from breaking into the top ‘x’ as we ever were. We are fucking miles away from them.
At least under smith you felt could win against the ‘big boys’ which we frequently did.
Under this bloke we just alway look like the plucky underdog.
No doubt ‘it’s on him and he knows what he needs to do to develop our identity’….again!
-
Clearly, we don't have enough players in the squad to make wholesale changes, especially when Sanson, Bailey and Traore can't be trusted any more than the clowns who played today. I'm not sure what has happened to Ezri Konsa this season but he has not warranted the game time he's been given. I appreciate that Young made a tit of himself when he got booked, but this is exactly what Konsa needs to do every so often. He was owned by Kane and showed him far too much respect. The headers, or non-challenges he put in were absolutely crap and someone said in the match thread that he should have been taken off to make a point, I agree. Too many players go missing when we fall behind, although first half we showed some mettle but when the second goal went in, too many were all anonymous. Steven Gerrard should be asked a simple question: before we give you a shitload of money, can you make the players you have any better? On the evidence I have seen so far, I think he hasn't. Consistency is key here, the first half, we were very good, but the second half was woeful. The only consistent thing about Villa at the moment is the fans, sell outs every game. Does this current team and Manager deserve that?
-
We got hammered at home to spuds...no fuckin positives just 4-0... not one fuckin positive from that scoreline
-
That second half looked like the the second half of a manager about to lose his job.
He’s clearly not - but fuck me that was poor second half
The players need to take a lot of responsibility - but to me if you team is less then the sum of its parts there’s something wrong and I think that’s where we are.
I thought we went all out far too early in the second half. That third goal was the kind you might see in a cup knockout game in the last minute when a team has pushed everyone forward. The last one nearly as bad.
Thought first half was nearly best we played all season. But our defensive shape is hopeless. Four defenders playing as individuals. Balance of midfield clearly not right as has been the case all season.
-
Box to box, the better side. Where it counts, they were incredibly clinical and Lloris makes numerous saves.
At no point did we come under sustained pressure, so its disappointing yer again that the centre of our defence gave up chances, which Spurs grabbed.
The timing of the 2nd goal was a bust. Mings has to get closer and doesn't. I think that was part of the thinking with the 3rd, as there was no need to go and engage Kane.
We have to take chances. 19 shots, 11 on target. It has to be better. Its strategic, its structural. Its recruitment. Mings, Luiz, Watkins. That's not a spine we can rely upon.
-

Don’t agree that he has to go - but think we have seen why maybe we could of looked a bit harder to find our next appointment

On the long journey home trying to work out what just happened. I was very pressed by Villa first half. Apart from the Konsa header we battered them without the goal(s) we deserved. Spurs struggled to get out of their half. It was just the type of front foot , aggressive home performance I want to see. The 2nd goal killed us and then we fell apart. Spurs were clinical 2nd half and looked Champions League standard.Oh well, At least the traffic is good as most fans seemed to leave at 3-0. Onwards to Leicester next week.
-
I know it comes with the territory but my lord am I tired of feeling like crap 20 weekends out of the year.

I agree with Ads here. I don’t at all think the scoreline was an accurate reflection of the game. Their finishing was that of a side at a higher level then us which is exactly where Spurs are at the moment. I couldn’t have any complaints about the first half in terms of attitude and application. If only we had that every week.
We’ve currently got players who have been good servants in getting us to be a mid table premier league team and I think the club has made good progress over the past few years in particular compared to the previous decade. But if we want to push on, these servants either need to become back ups or are moved on.
-

So were Spurs.
-
Cheers Percy...
-
I’m not a Gerrard hater but think the Premier League is a step too far for him at this stage of his career. He needs to be far more ruthless with his team selection. He seems the same as DS when it comes to substitutions and also can’t seem to change tactics during a game, when needed. In summary, he’s not the man for me and don’t think I would trust him to spend £millions in the summer. If I were the owners of the club, I’d be on the lookout for a much more experienced manager if one is available.
-
Cheers Percy...
Sorry mate..
-
Weird game, dominated the first half after they scored but couldn’t find a way past Lloris. Unfortunately after their second we were a shambles.
We were not good enough all over the park in the second half and I’m beginning to think that perhaps the Gerrard appointment was the wrong choice.
God only knows where we go from here.
I have a niggling feeling that Norwich will turn us over and if they do what then for Stevie G?

I was underwhelmed when he was appointed and I am even more underwhelmed now. However I think we need to give him a full pre season and pre season transfer window and see how we go. Let's see how we get get on early doors next season when it will be very much his team rather than him having to go with the previous managers' players.

Every time we lose the two of you are out in force with the anti Gerrard stuff, its not just todays battering, its every week and whilst you are entitled to your opinions its dull as dishwater. And then you back track as soon as your challenged, God its painful!
Firstly Gerrards not going to get sacked this season, just a fact. And it would be ridiculous to sack the manager after 5 months, when we’re mid table. Whilst he cant avoid blame for the last few weeks, ultimately many of our players are mid table to lower mid table table standard. First half is the best we’ve played all season, the difference in the two sides, Watkins and Ings to Kane and Son. Thats an over simplification, but we should of been 3 up by half time. Stating the obvious and every team wants this i guess, but new centre back, new defensive midfielder, new forward and we’ll be challenging for Europe next year.
-
Did we win the game on xG? That'd be something I can taunt my Spuds colleague with on Monday...
-
I hope, one day, we can get one of these "striker" thingys that other teams have. One can but dream.
-
I didn't see any of the game thankfully, but it irks me that Gerrard called them a "top club". With that mentality we won't get anywhere. They're not a top club: they're Spurs.

First half after we went behind, great. The second half, I can't work out if we fell apart or they just seemed to score with every chance they had. Depressing stuff anyway.

Difference is you never expected Son to miss that one on one or close range shot for fourth.
Put Ollie in the one on one and he probably hits it straight at the keeper. And Ings for 4th would've likely taken 2-3 touches and had his shot blocked, these weren't tap ins but Son made them look very easy given he's a world class striker and we just don't have those or can afford them.
End of last season it looked like we could start pushing likes of Spurs in the league but instead they kept their talisman, we lost ours and now the gulf will be back to 20 + points again and that's generally too much to make up in 12 months so likely same again next season as Kane will probably hang around if they make top 4.
-
After another defensive lapse, we were all over them in the first half, but you just knew that we'd rue so many missed opportunities. If we'd played like Spurs in that first 45, we'd have been 3 down. However we're too easy to score against.
Konsa and Mings have been quite flaky this season and that was borne out today; Konsa for the first and then Mings should know to show Kulusevski inside. After the second, worryingly the team lost shape, belief and energy.

So why was Chambers dropped and Konsa kept for the last 3 games? It was a strange game, and we are poor at the moment and have been for most of the season, under Dean and Stevie. If it was that good under Dean why was he sacked? Because it wasn’t that good under him. SG needs at least next season then we can judge. I said in the pub earlier, how many seasons would I have cried for mid table mediocrity, well I have got it now.
-
Glad that the Easter break started for me on Friday, anyway.
-
On train home without much charge so haven't read any other thoughts but thought we were unfortunate today, as daft as that sounds after a 0-4. Pinned them back pretty much the entire first half and if we'd scored could have been a different story
-
I know it comes with the territory but my lord am I tired of feeling like crap 20 weekends out of the year.
I am a broken record on this point but I want us to start turning defeats into draws. Since we came up we are a team too easily beaten.
-
That Romero they have is fucking brilliant, niggly ******, breaking everything up, leaves a foot in, gets in everybodys face at every 50/50, slows the game down when they're under the cosh, makes you want to chin him. But controlled there defence, makes Dier look decent.
-
Glad I waited until the 90th minute before leaving, the streets were almost empty around the ground then.
Poor first goal to give away and then a really good first half, shame our strikers don't have quality finishing like Son or Kane. Second half another early soft goal and our heads dropped immediately, especially poor from Konsa and McGinn today.
-
Well that was shit all round really.
We were on top first half but wasted chance after chance, and you just knew we would rue those opportunities come full time.
Martinez could have done better when called upon - thought he was particularly poor today.
Entire defence, Matty Cash aside were garbage.
McGinn pinged a couple of nice balls across to Digne on the wing, then in the next breath, constantly failed to pass the ball 3 yards to a teammate. How many more matches will he be picked for after yet another sub par performance?
Ollie not at the races…. Couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo, touch all over the place, and some of his passing today was abysmal.
Digne an absolute waste of money. I see no improvement over Targett, and he’s very quickly turning into the French Darren Anderton.
I’d love the physios to have those gps vests on, because I reckon they ran more yards than the players today. Felt like there were more stoppages than actual play!? Such a frustrating game to watch.
Also, Villa Park. Shite atmosphere yet again. And nobody can mock other clubs fans after today’s exodus. I know there are traffic issues, but a half empty stadium with 20 minutes to go is a shockingly poor show. We’re better than that.
And would i trust Gerrard to play Top Trumps with Nas and Wes’s money…. Not a fucking chance. I know we bagged Coutinho, but if Digne is an indication of how he intends to ‘improve’ the squad, count me out!
Shit day. I’m off to drown my sorrows. UTV
-
Digne is a big upgrade on Targett and it’s nonsense to dismiss him.
-
If we'd equalised, I still doubt we'd have won. It's Villa...and Spurs would have bucked their ideas up. We're just a bit shit.
-

I posted my inital comment without reading the he has to go bit, If I had read it properly I wouldnt have commented on it. I dont agree he has to but I personally think he has done a pretty poor job and we saw today the difference between a good manager and one that isnt.
I havent back tracked - but clearly Im more pragmatic the further we get from games - think Gerrard is too cos he never drops the players he calls out.
I think he is a mistake - but maybe I am too quick to criticise,
After the wins I have given him credit after the leeds game I said how encouraged I was that he seemed to have learnt quickly, but we have now lost 4 on the bounce and he doesnt seem to have any answers.
We all know hes not going to get sacked this season, but I worry were going in the wrong direction and abandoning the bigger picture. But fair point, maybe I do go on about it too much
-

I’m definitely not seeing what some are seeing. Certainly not an upgrade imo.
-

Lightweight, injury prone, caught on halfway line during most opposition attacks. A luxury we can’t afford with our back line.
-
Well we played well first half and should have been 3 up. The less said about the second half the better.
Scores on the doors:
Martinez - 6 felt he could have done better on the 2nd.
Cash - 6 probably the pick of the back 4 but that’s not saying much
Konsa - 3 poor for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd goals. IMV not good enough with the ball.
Mings - 4 poor for the 2nd and seems to lack his usual drive.
Digne - 5 alright going forwards but still a bit lacking defensively
Luiz, McGinn, Ramsey - 3 all were on for a 7 after the first half but totally useless second half.
Coutinho - 6 super first half but seemed to fade badly and rightly subbed
Ings/Watkins - 4 I thought after a bright 1st half they both struggled second half. Finishing practice required for both of them.
Subs - all 5 no one really made an impact.
Gerrard - 3 as good as it was first half, his inability to change anything in the second half other than make like for like subs is a slightly worrying trend. He was slightly let down by his players today particularly Konsa and McGinn.
-
We were comfortably the better team for the first half. But still managed to gift a goal away & miss a load of chances. We've seen it all too often where teams have had to do next to fuck all to score against us. We've not upgraded the core of the defence & midfield since we came up. We will achieve nothing until we do.
I thought we were brilliant for 45 minutes. There's more right with the team than wrong. We know what's wrong, Gerrard knows what's wrong & I have no doubt he will address the spine of the team in the summer.
-
Today was a masterclass in clinical finishing. The difference in class between the two attacking forces was as clear as you’ll ever see. WatkIngs will never be a potent pairing, and if I’m honest I would be sad to see them both go this summer. You simply cannot afford to miss the amount of clear chances we had and expect to achieve anything in this league, and so it proved.
As for the defence, what an utter car crash of a performance - I’ll excuse Cash from that, otherwise none of them covered themselves in glory, standing off their men, weak passes and clearances that are food and drink to players like Son and co.
I expect that today’s second half will prove to be a watershed in many of this team’s villa future...time will tell, but I expect to see a number of changes at Leicester.
-
..the little things continue to annoy me,such as Dougie taking corners and playing Watkins purely to run around a lot and fail to hold the ball up when played up to him!
No other teams seem to consede as many goals as us from a hopeful punt forward --we never score any of those!
-
Phil was superb first half.
Can’t face thinking about the rest of it
-
There was nothing really wrong with the tactics first half, we just failed to take our chances after typically rubbish defending gifted them another chance. I've been saying it for weeks, but we've go far too many mediocre players. McGinn isn't even mediocre, he's just crap.
-
If we're trying to get Nakamba up to speed, why didn't we give him some minutes?
-
Just got back. £60 on petrol, £60 on tickets, £30 at Pizza Hut at Starcity and a lesson in taking chances from Spurs. What a depressing day.
-
There's no way we'll ever move on another level with Ings and Watkins as our strikers.
Both are nowhere near what's required at this level.
Sorry to be harsh but after today I couldn't care less if either or both move on in the Summer.
-
I didn't see any of the game thankfully, but it irks me that Gerrard called them a "top club". With that mentality we won't get anywhere. They're not a top club: they're Spurs.
Depends which metric he used. They never win anything but they've qualified for europe evey season since 2009 and will likely be back in CL for next season. And they attract top managers with ease.
So a little different to us not finishing in top half of prem since 2011 and getting in relative rookies as managers.
-
There'll be no changes at Leicester. Same team, same tactics, early goal conceded, confidence dives, Leicester score again. "Changes will have to be made". Yeah, yeah, yeah...
-
If we're trying to get Nakamba up to speed, why didn't we give him some minutes?
I think Gerrard brought Buendia and Bailey on to try and attack them more, and then Digne lost an eyelash or something so on came Young as per bloody usual. I don't remember Marv even warming up to be honest so not sure if him coming was ever likely to happen.
-
Our fans are as shite as McGinn's ability to retain possession. Who fucks off with 20 minutes to go. Wankers.
-
Anyway by far the best thing about today was driving to the game. Got a few miles down the A14 in my mate's car, and we could see two people messing about on a bridge a little way ahead. Got a bit closer, and one of the people was a young lady in a total state of undress leaning over the bridge and waggling her ample bosom at the passing cars and lorries.
-

Our fans are as shite as McGinn's ability to retain possession. Who fucks off with 20 minutes to go. Wankers.
We left when their 4th went in and I don’t blame anyone else who did. Although I should have stayed to the end to beat the traffic

If we improved the WiFi and/or 5G at B6, you could start your manager out threads before the game has finished.
Utter wank to see the total lack of support for the side today. Its almost universally the lower Witton, truly the worst of us as they fuck off on a regular basis. But the emptying on 70ish minutes was pathetic.
-
Agreed. So annoying the wait after I had pressed submit.
-
It’s always been a thing at Villa though. It used to happen when it was still in the balance as well. This obsession with traffic which doesn’t bother me really is just weird.
-
Anyway by far the best thing about today was driving to the game. Got a few miles down the A14 in my mate's car, and we could see two people messing about on a bridge a little way ahead. Got a bit closer, and one of the people was a young lady in a total state of undress leaning over the bridge and waggling her ample bosom at the passing cars and lorries.
Surely an omen that things were going to go tits up today.
-
Son is a ridiculously good finisher. Xg for today was 1.66 v 0.89. He scored a hatrick with 3 fucking attempts at 0.56. Little shit.
-
I know what you’re getting at Ads but, I have to be honest the last 20 minutes was a bore fest from a Villa point of view. As for the support, I always say the team have to be putting in a real shift. Witness the first half when the home support was really good because the players were giving it a go. After their 4th went in, our players gave up the ghost and the fans followed their lead. Very difficult to be very vocal at 4-0 down.
-
I think if you're a "Witton Lane can't manage 90 fucking minutes, fucked off when it was rough on 70 mark when losing to Spurs" type then you should receive cosmic punishment for your Arsenal level support. So on that basis when we finally win the FA Cup next season, you're fired out of the ground before you get the chance to see the trophy lifted.
-

I'm pretty sure it's not a competition, who stays longer. People do what they want, they pay a lot of money to watch these games and if they want to fuck off when we're 4-0 down, then they've got every right to do so.
-
Some people left the Leicester semi final on 85 minutes, no word of a lie. It wouldn't have even gone to extra time FFS

I was in the upper Holte and it was haemorrhaging fans after the 3rd went in. Mass exodus when they scored the 4th. These aren’t Villa tourists.

Agreed, they have every right to be fairweather Arsenal types and fuck off with 20 odd minutes to go in embarrassing fashion. And I'll exert mine and Andre Green's right to think they're wankers.
-
I would add I don't blame anyone for leaving today
Last 20 minutes were complete garbage time, as the Yanks say. We spent injury time seeing if we could spot our Dad and uncle in the Holte from the Upper Trinity. We couldn't.

Even the first half, the atmosphere was pretty shite. Part of me wonders if it’s the bread n butter fans being priced out of attending that is the issue… and with the impending ticket price rise and the ever increasing Tory taxes we’ll undoubtedly lose a few more.
I’m in Trinity road upper, and there was some twat behind me with a London accent hurling abuse at Watkins all game, with no clue how to properly hurl abuse - it was super awkward…. and far too posh for football. More suited to a polo match!
The last time we had anything resembling a proper Villa Park atmosphere was Everton under the lights in our first season back. Apart from that it’s been generally poor…. And getting worse.

I suffer headaches and depression, major reason for that is because of Aston Villa Football club,so I fuck off when I want too

I was in the upper Holte and it was haemorrhaging fans after the 3rd went in. Mass exodus when they scored the 4th. These aren’t Villa tourists.
I was in lower Holte in the corner where Brigada used to be with the banners and was actually a fire drill at 3-0 aswell.
Funny you mention the tourists bit as was making my way down as soon as injury time was announced and looked up at Upper Trinity and it was still pretty packed so they must've all wanted to applaud Son off the bench as used to be a decent amount of away fans up there in the seasons I could get cheap tickets off Viagogo in that area.
Whole club feels really flat currently and think that's feeding to the fanbase currently as we all just want this season to end now.
-
First half - conceded a very fortunate ate goal early in, but played well for the majority of the half and created some decent chances.
Second half - complete capitulation after the second goal in and we were wide open at the back with no midfield cover in front of them. Shockingly bad.
-

I don't. I think it is important that we try and finish the season on a high, so that potential recruits believe they are joining an ambitious club who are moving forward.

I was expecting 50 + points after Leeds away so we've really screwed that up.
To just get to 45 points now we have to beat Burnley twice and Norwich. To get to 51 points add in win at Leicester and v Palace or draws v Liverpool and Man. City if we get 4 points from those two fixtures.
Given the state we're in I'll leave you to work out if that's likely or not. It's been a very flattering to deceive season straight from the opening day.
-
That Bailey attempt (anyone else slots home no problem) sums up his Villa career... Complete fucking shite! Also, that Watkins attempt where all the hard work was done for him, but of course his disastrous first touch just gifts the ball back to Lloris.
I noticed an hour before KO spuds were 60/1 to win 0-4 and 160/1 to win 0-5. Guess who's in the money baby?!
Ridiculous odds considering they've scored something like 25 goals in their previous 5 or 6 matches and we are on a losing streak.
No point even mentioning the same lightweights in midfield - we all know they'll be starting against Leicester.
-
Digne is a big upgrade on Targett and it’s nonsense to dismiss him.
On what basis? ..he has showed little or nothing since the club spent big money getting him in
-
Clearly, we don't have enough players in the squad to make wholesale changes, especially when Sanson, Bailey and Traore can't be trusted any more than the clowns who played today.
That foul by Young on Kane was the highlight of the second half for me. I agree with your comments re Konsa though, he was very poor today, starting with the poor header in the build up to the opener. I also think he doesn’t take responsibility with the ball and moves it on to Mings or the full backs but rarely plays a forward pass. He’s not developed this season.
We had plenty of promise in the first half but poor finishing left us vulnerable. If we’d equalised things may have been different but bollocks to ifs after losing 4-0. Each of the goals today was eminently avoidable and we really lack intelligence and game management in key moments.
Looking behind us in the table again. If Newcastle finish above us then Gerrard has done a poor job.
-
That third goal was a disgrace. Watching it back here. The kind of goal that should never be conceded at this level.
-
Both Konsa and Mings were embarrassing for the fourth.
-
Gerrard sounded like a broken man in his post match interview.
We're a soft touch and defensively all over the place. No leadership across the pitch.
-
today we saw the difference between a top manager and a PR stunt.
Conte is undoubtedly a better manager than Gerrard but that is also true for almost every other manager in the world.
What I saw was the difference a few genuine world class players can make.
-
I noticed an hour before KO spuds were 60/1 to win 0-4 and 160/1 to win 0-5. Guess who's in the money baby?!
Not sure “who’s in the money baby” but any twat on here who bets on the Villa to lose can “go away”.
-
Looking behind us in the table again. If Newcastle finish above us then Gerrard has done a poor job.
I can see both Newcastle and Leeds finishing above us. We will finish 16th and in terms of number of games lost and goals conceded that’s about right place
-
Sell the lot of them.
-
Horrible season. Ever since the soap opera last July/August an air of unprofessionalism and being half-arsed has permeated the squad. A massive let down after so much promise in 2020.
I doubt the owners are impressed.
-

You can not win games if 4 players play as badly as McGinn Konsa Ings and Watkins.
When you are as dominant as we were in the first half you have to take some of those chances and we didn’t.
It was pretty obvious that we had expended a lot of energy and the gaps were getting wider all over the pitch but Gerrard failed to bring on fresh legs to counter this.
I don’t know where we go from here and I don’t think the manager does either.
-
The season is lost, so why not play Tim and Chuk and a few other youngsters just to get them some time on the pitch? It is not like our “senior” players are doing anything of note. I just do not understand the lack of interest in getting the players quality minutes and why it would not be worth seeing if these players can handle the PL. what have we got to lose at this point?
-
Why, along with Watkins' dramatic loss of form, is Ings playing like an average Sunday league player for us. Has he ever been as shit at any of his previous clubs?

His record is patchy at best. Only had 2 good seasons in his career. One to get rid,
-
That shot Ings suffed first half was dismal, it looked easier to score. He looks very much washed up, what a terrible panic signing that was.

Yup. But he will be sold in the summer and turn back into the goal machine he's been everywhere else in his career!

If you look at his stats, he hasn't really been a goal machine. One amazing season for Southampton with 22 goals and a good year in the Championship with Burnley. Other than that, he's never got more than 12 goals. We'd have been no worse off getting Benteke back.

Fans have to be able to show their disgust at a totally unacceptable performance from the team. What better way to show the guys running the show that disgust than getting up and walking out??? If they didn’t know that changes need to be made they do now.

I'd rather stay to the end and boo the fuckers.

Being a tight git, my attitude is that I’ve paid for the whole match so I am damn well going to stay to the end.
-
People vote with their feet.
The transport arrangements are garbage. So why double up on the frustration?
People are entitled to do whatever they please. I personally stay, though did once leave very early, I think when we were on the end of another stuffing by Man Utd and I had better things to do than sit in traffic for an hour feeling pissed off.
-
Last time we played as well as that in the first half we were 4-1 up against Liverpool. But if you don’t take your chances & gift goals away it doesn’t matter how well you play.
We’re too easy to score against, if we stop that everything will fall into place.
Gerrard will bring in the players who will do the job.
-
Great first half but you can’t be that wasteful against a a good team and expect to get anything from the game. Spurs, like Wolves, were easily able to exploit the gaps behind our fullbacks and pick us off with ease.
-
Fans can do whatever they like, if Villa losing affects people's mental health then so be it, the mind is a strange thing and football is very emotional. I stay to the end and try and keep football and Villa in a separate part of brain.
Bringing up kids being raped in response to someone feeling very down after a defeat is fucking gross.
-
I'd rather stay to the end and boo the fuckers.
I guess it’s each to their own. I wouldn’t go before the end but I can’t think of a better way to show disgust than an empty Holte end at 70 mins. That’s more noticeable than a full booing Holte at 90 mins IMO
-
Glass is half full - we played some great football in the first half, we were the better team and should have been ahead, play like that for the rest of the season and we will win more games than lose.
Glass is half empty - we concede a soft goal through another mistake by a defender, do not take our chances when presented, and second half we are done by a manager who changed his tactics to a long ball over the midfield, and better quality players scored.
Take your pick which way you want to look at it, we have to look at the positives, but it feels fucking shit to keep losing. UTV

Some of us use the villa as a distraction and escape from the real long-term problems that we have in our individual lives. There are occasions, not least now in this crazy world we are living in, where we could do with a 'lift'. I don't think your comment here is very fair or reasonable. I don't know what other distractions you have in life but I wouldn't be the sort of person who goes to the theatre, gym or whatever.
-
My abiding thoughts from the game were:
- Gerrard was far too passive. After the second went in I'd have made changes - Traore on for Watkins, Marv on for Luiz.
- Relying on the fullbacks for width doesn't strike me as a viable strategy unless you're playing 3 CB or have a world-class DMF.
- Where the hell has Konsa gone?! The bloke playing in his shirt looks like a pub player.
- What the club are doing to rebuild the confidence levels of Ings and Watkins.
- Why Tim and Chuk are not getting any game time - either play 'em or don't pick 'em (send out on loan next season?).
- Bailey is a dud.
Travelling back, I totted up around 9-10 players who will probably leave the club in the summer: that creates a massive recruitment / integration job, which - for a rooky manager - is a high-risk strategy; albeit probably necessary. I just hope they don't bring in players who are simply expensive! .... and that they pick players who complement the team / squad rather than simply being good in the role ... and that they don't block the deserving youngsters from breaking through (we know how managers tend to play their recruits even when they're not playing well).
-
We were unbelievably good from the third minute right up until half time. Second half they disappeared up their own arses. That's baffling to me. The elephant in the room is our back four. It's as fragile as Prince Andrew's "I physically can't sweat" defence. I'm not one for over reacting but the defence needs an overhaul and we have strikers who cant hit the proverbial barn door with a banjo. The summer transfer window cant come soon enough.

My view is you stay and you suffer it all. Whether it's 8-1 at the Bridge or the longest 7 minutes of your life at Wembley. Football is by and large a bit of a masochistic exprience for nigh on every fan outside of a handful of clubs. I don't like a culture of giving in, I don't like it when the players give up, I didn't like it when Lerner gave up and I don't like it when our supporters do the same. Have a bit of pride and suffer, as every once in a thousand games, Andre Green might surprise you.

As long as you weren't wanking
-
Sky are saying that since they starting keeping records for this stat 15 years ago, that was the most saves a Spurs keeper has made in a first half of a match, which says it all. Thought we were superb, the best 1st half performance against a top 4 side since the 7-2, outside of the top 2, we played the form team in the league off the park. Now need to carry that form into the Leicester match, who thankfully won't have a world class striker in their team.

I normally agree with what you say Ads but not this. The performance was a disgrace after half time and I can’t think of a better way to show that disgrace then to walk out. It’s not about traffic or transport either or plastic fans. The owners would have noticed that too. The alternative is like a”Newcastle” sit and watch till the end and gamely clap as they leave the field.

Now need to carry that form into the Leicester match, who thankfully won't have a world class striker in their team.
that's the annoying part of the game, you could see Spurs getting another goal and we needed to score first half, also why couldn't we play like that against Wolverhampton, West Ham
-
Disagree, if you leave with 20 minutes to go because you're 3 down, you're a wanker. You wouldn't leave if you were 3 up with 20 minutes left.
That's totally unacceptable.
That’s fine and a perfectly reasonable outlook. But calling fellow fans with a different view to yours wankers ( classic teenage keyboard warrior tactics - you wouldn’t say it to someone on the Holte or in the pub) is shit house stuff. And I’d imagine it’s probably against some site rule or other.
-
No-one likes to see the ground emptying, no-one does. It's not a good look. I don't like it but I understand it when it happens.
-
Why wouldn't I say it to their face, if I was so aggrevated enough to be confrontational with a single individual? It's certainly rude to call somebody a wanker, I'll grant you and it might offend your sensibilities, it might not. Supporters leaving offends my sensibilities, as its a collective failure. Why would you want to upset me anymore than me upset you?
When a Villa fan is (hypothetically) arrested somewhere for being a racist scumbag at a game, I'm embarrassed by that. As we're a collective and when we behave like twats as a group, it reflects badly on all of us. We know that you or I aren't like that, but we're a heaving mass. So when the Witton Lane vanishes with 20 minutes to go, that dereliction is a reflective of us all. I'd prefer us all to suffer and be mardy and miserable as one until the end. Others disagree.

This. It also distracts from what should be the real focus ie management/coaching staff and the players.

I'm being unreasonable to convey my sense of irritation though. Me sitting in the Holte doesn't cause irritation, I'm just there, along with everybody else. Giving up is alien to me, I cannot stomach it and so it grates and manifests thus.
-
I went on my own yesterday as my son is on holiday and confess I did leave in the 83rd minute. First time I’ve ever left a game early but I’d seen enough.
-
Never mind leaving early, yesterday was one of those rare occasions when I actually arrived in time for the kick off. Sober. On a normal Saturday I’d have missed Son’s opener. God knows what the Trinity Road moralists make of people like me
-
It's getting increasingly unpleasant on here just lately.
-
I think it was that Walnuts fella who said that if he leaves on ninety minutes he can get home an hour earlier than if he stays to the end. Given the shit-awful kick-off time and worsening transport problems I wouldn't blame anyone for taking that decision yesterday.
-
We're talking about deserting the side with 20 minutes to go. That's not nipping to the toilet or making a dash for the train, that's an egregious surrender.
-

Perseverance is alien to me, you absolute persistent stay-to-the-end melt. If something is hard, stop trying. That's my attitude, and therefore it ought to be yours too.
It's certainly the prevailing school of thought amongst the football players you pay your hard-earned to watch.
-
It's something I've only done once in 35 years of regular attendance at VP.
And that was only because the person I was with was my lift home.
It isn't in my nature to leave that early regardless of how bad things are going because my personal choice is to stay.
I wouldn't call out people who chose leave though. It's up to them.
-
The main difference yesterday was that we have two duds upfront and they haven’t
-
Oh well.
I stayed till 90 mins but I missed the added on time because I needed a piss. I hope that was ok.
I managed to tie a knot in it until the final whistle, but I admit it was an effort.
-
We're talking about deserting the side with 20 minutes to go. That's not nipping to the toilet or making a dash for the train, that's an egregious surrender.
Egregious surrender? If you've paid money you're absolutely entitled to leave whenever you feel like it for whatever reason without being insulted by fellow fans.
-
So Ads when people sitting around you were leaving early yesterday., did you call them wankers to their faces??
-
We're talking about deserting the side with 20 minutes to go. That's not nipping to the toilet or making a dash for the train, that's an egregious surrender.
I surrendered on 82 minutes. If I'd known it was going to upset you so much I'd have stayed. Until the 70th minute.

No Sid, just in case one of them was you. You're awfully intimidating and I'm afraid you might put your fists on me.
-
It's getting increasingly unpleasant on here just lately.
Indeed. I suppose emotions run high when the villa are involved and, even if a certain poster in this very thread likes to call people out for over-reacting to a defeat when so many bad things are happening in the world, said posters own use of quite extreme language here would indicate that he himself takes the villa as seriously as any of us and hates losing as much as any of us!
-
I'd love to call people who nip off for chips and curry sauce on 36 minutes wankers but I'm too polite and we'll brought-up to do so
-
The main difference yesterday was that we have two duds upfront and they haven’t
Son and Bailey both came from Leverkusen and for €30m. The similarities end there.
-
I stayed to the end and even sang "I'm Villa till I die". Yes, a middle-aged woman!
God knows what that would make me to some on here...
-

I think it’s now become apparent that Bailey looking so good against Everton was more a reflection on Everton than on Bailey.
-
Are there wholly justified reasons for leaving early? A wedding? A birth? A break-in? If so then the whole question is moot.
No further questions m'lud.
-
The season is lost, so why not play Tim and Chuk and a few other youngsters just to get them some time on the pitch? It is not like our “senior” players are doing anything of note. I just do not understand the lack of interest in getting the players quality minutes and why it would not be worth seeing if these players can handle the PL. what have we got to lose at this point?
Can't understand why Carney didn't get on at any point yesterday. He came on v Spurs last 15 minutes end of last season and looked fine. I get the issues with the new deal but he's barely played since January after having regular cameos up to that month.
Would certainly give the LB some minutes if Digne is going to be out for the season.

We were losing four-nil. It wasn't any fun. Why would I keep doing something that is making me miserable?

I ask myself that every morning when I arrive at work.
-
I find the worse of the lot are the ones from the back who leave, and because mates on your row have already gone, jump in the empty seats to get closer to the exits. Its their indecision that annoys me. If you're leaving just leave ffs!
I know someone who left the play off final early. They were convinced Derby were going to make a biblical come back. Missed the presentation of the trophy and all the good stuff.
Regarding the game we threw the kitchen sink at them for that period in the 1st half but I was never convinced we would score. add to that the usual gift of the first goal. it was typical Villa. Having ings and watkins on the pitch at the same time would be my preference but you can see ings is a bit in awe of watkins. there are times when ings could of had a shot and he tried to pass to watkins and the defenders nipped in.
-
I also edge down into empty seats to get closer to the exit. I must be the worst fan ever.
-

I bet you buy half and half scarves, too.
-

Wouldn't surprise me.
-
I was sat next a woman yesterday who asked me if that’s where the away fans are while pointing to the Holte End. She then didn’t come out for the second half.
-
I also edge down into empty seats to get closer to the exit. I must be the worst fan ever.

Only so I can cut off the Villa half.

There was a Gerrard v Conte scarf yesterday I saw somewhere.

Playing one of the splitter six will always bring out day trippers with no clue other than they want to watch "Sonny" and "Kaney" live.
Actually had one guy next to me yesterday in first 20 minutes asking for I could sell him a Liverpool ticket as his 12 year old nephew supported them and he wanted to bring him to watch Salah and co! I explained I didn't know the regulars who sat there as I'd actually got my ticket off someone who'd resold their season ticket online and he then went down to the concourse and didn't see him again all game.
In a 40k crowd you're always going to get some interesting characters I guess.
One other aside from yesterday....is it me or is half time just crap now. Were the scores from the other games even read out at all? I remember we used to get 2-3 fans to try to shoot towards the centre circle to win some prizes but guess that's been ditched due to covid. Why don't we get some popular old players back and interview them on the pitch?
All yesterday had was Russ Morris reading out Villa rewards winners.
For such an apparently progressive and upwardly mobile club some of our operations do feel very lacklustre compared to many others.
-
Could always keep underperforming players from the first half out at half-time, launch custard pies at them.
Only it wouldn't be custard pies I'd be throwing. It would be hot gravy. And gravel.

Over all though, seven-on-ten.

Villa and Clyde half and half merch would make a killing in the Witton/North stand corner.

Yeah we moved down on 86 minutes then hovered around the exit for a while before leaving
No idea why

Very doubtful, they were hopeful he would be available for their European match last Thursday, but he's had a setback, now maybe out for the season.
-
Pays your money, takes your choice. I probably wouldn't have stayed until the end yesterday in the same way I didn't hang around to watch Arsenal get their medals at Wembley. Buying a ticket for the football seems to me like the equivalent of a bet: it's my stake that I'll be temporarily happy. Sometimes it's better to cut your losses.

Apparently so that you don't get called a wanker by a fan that thinks he's better than you.

You're a customer. We all are, and have been since 1992.

A loyal one. A foolish one. Not mutually exclusive.
-
Someone actually walking out with 5 minutes left of a play off final we were actually winning feels like one of the most absurd things I've ever read.
Miss the joy of us actually going up the Wembley steps and lifting up something for once and it could've gone to extra time or even penalties.
It was very tense but that seems more crazy to me than nipping out to get a head start on the M6 at 3-0 down of a long lost game as yesterday was.
-
There’s no need to call him a wanker……
-
I stayed to the end, applauded the 3 or 4 players (Mings especially) who could be bothered to come to the Holte and Trinity to get the applause from the few thousand of us left. I then sauntered over to Aston Station to get back to New Street, long queue but as soon as the first train arrived they packed just about the whole queue into it so as far as I could make out no train issues but that may have been better because so many people fucked off early.
I can see where Ads is coming from even if I wouldn’t express it the way he has but it’s not just yesterday either, the Lower Witton Lane crowd are spectacular in their rush to the exits from about 75 minutes onwards. However each to their own, you’ve paid your money you can take your choice.
-
I always try to stay till the end, some kind of semi absurd loyalty. Saying that, of all the games, at the Sheffield Utd game in 2019, there were two blokes by me, probably my age, really going head to head in a big row, from memory, one swore in frustration, one took offence as he had his kids with him, and then proceeded to get more aggressive than the swearer, scaring his own kids. He also scared my lad who was only 9 at the time. It was a Friday night, we had been playing shite for months, we were losing 0-3 with 10 left and my boy was scared. It was 3-3 by the time we got back to the car!
My lad wanted to leave when the 4th went in yesterday and i said no, a form of child cruelty maybe, but for me it just teaches him to support the team even when we are shite, which is a quite frequent experience with Villa.
-
I've never said people can't do what they want or the like, I've just taken a dim view of leaving with 20 minutes to go. That's an eternity and it comes from a part of the ground in particular where they pay more for their tickets, as the patrons lose at least 2 games of football a year.
-
I left with 5 mins to go but I needed to escape the queue at Aston Station to get the train back to Trent Valley to get my connection back to the NW
-
I didn’t even go. Was in a pub and didn’t even watch it. Guess that makes me a huge wanker.
-
I left at half time when Blackburn were 4-0 up in Sir Brian's reign. I was on a promise with a lass I shared a flat in Leicester with. I wasn't a wanker that night.
-
I think people who masturbate are wankers, personally.
-

Same here, each to their own. I've never left a game early in the same way as I've never walked out of a film at the cinema, admittedly though I didn't go to see 'La La Land' on the big screen.
-
I didn’t even go.
-
I watched it on Sky on an hour's delay and fast forwarded it to the end after the 3rd goal just stopping to go back and watch the 4th. What kind of wanker does that make me?
-

I walked out of Miss Congeniality halfway through. Have you seen it...:-0
-

A wanker who was lucky not to be at the game.
A couple of minutes before the end of the game Watkins (?) was through but flagged offside. He decided to put the ball in anyway and I cheered the “goal” only for the ball to hit the bar and rebound out. My misplaced cheer made the dozen or so souls around me burst out laughing, probably the highlight of their afternoon.
-
It was Luiz. Burst out laughing myself as it summed the day up.
-
Absolute disgrace
Four defeats on the bounce
Only got 40 minutes in us . Pathetic
This feels as bad as the Lambert era
-

So did I once I’d realised 😢

I left at half time when Blackburn were 4-0 up in Sir Brian's reign. I was on a promise with a lass I shared a flat in Leicester with. I wasn't a wanker that night.
That start to 97-98 was the biggest let down of all. I genuinely thought we could finish in the top three places that season. Instead, we went out and lost our first four games.
-
2 lads who sit by me left after the 3rd goal went in and they go to all the away games, maybe they should give up their away tickets?
I left with 5 mins to go, I was the only person left in the row of seats that I sit in the Lower Holte, I did not call anyone a wanker as they were leaving
As bad as the 2nd half was on Saturday, it does not compare to the 6-0 humiliation by Liverpool in the season we were relegated.
-

I’ve always played football so I’ve never held a season ticket until that season. I had a knee opp that summer so treated myself and joined the SW Lions. My footy nickname was Jona and that start to the season I felt like a Jonah for Villa.

Yep, I was working in an office full of Leicester fans who were all absolutely overjoyed at Sir Brian's implosion.
-
I have been a "bitter ender" more times than I can remember, taking it with the team.
On Saturday I was watching it on the TV on my own
At 4.0 I thought, what is the point and drifted off to the fridge. Only other time was watching the Cup Final against the Arse
Gone with a whimper and not a bang
-
I didn't even purchase a ticket and go to the game, so that must make me an even bigger wanker. Don't actually recall ever leaving early when i have gone though, so perhaps that evens it out.
-
Just to put the icing on the cake I’ve just been pigged by the Covid app for a contact from Saturday. Will be doing a test later.
-

I can tell you now that was caused by you leaving and entering Trinity Road at 18.55 approximately. Would neve have happened had you stayed in your seat.

I did my usual thing earlier win lose or draw I have a look at the opposition forums. The Fighting Cock was the name of the one I looked at. And omg the match forum was ridiculous. It's a common theme with London clubs to slag off the ref but jesus christ they really take it to the next level. Paranoia reigns supreme. Some of them are convinced that the PL allow the refs to be paid off by the opposition to try and prevent Spurs getting top 4 just so Arsenal can. Our players are thugs and it's only good fortune that prevented several Spurs players getting their legs broken. No one gave us any credit for our excellent first half just a few saying that we raised our game massively but deliberately allowed Arsenal an easy 3 points a few weeks back. I can honestly say that they are the worst set of comments I've seen. As bad as Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday and their forums are full of barking mad wankers.

Comments on the Guardian website were pretty much the same - basically were a horrible team full of aggresive players
-
I love it when fans of teams like that get riled because we got into them. Fuck you!

Watching the game I thought I had gone back in time to the TSM 1 and TSM 2 years.

Absolutely, if you want entertainment go to the pictures. Football isn't the pastime for you. Supporting a football club is 60% duty, 35% punishment, and 5% optimism/pessimism (depending on the duty-to-punishment ratio of the club you support).

I’m a wanker. I left after the 4th goal. A combination of the score, 2nd half performance and having to get back to Aston station after an evening game made my mind up. I’ve never left that early before and, hopefully, won’t again.

Watching the game I thought I had gone back in time to the TSM 1 and TSM 2 years.
Really? Take away that appalling second half and that was probably the best I’ve seen us play against a top 6 side, we absolutely battered them. I’m still struggling to comprehend what went wrong

We didn’t score.

Just to put the icing on the cake I’ve just been pigged by the Covid app for a contact from Saturday. Will be doing a test later.
I can tell you now that was caused by you leaving and entering Trinity Road at 18.55 approximately. Would neve have happened had you stayed in your seat.
I stayed till the end and got home earlier than I normally do by about 15 minutes so there was a method in my madness!

I’m a wanker.
Me too. In my defence, I watch most games on a dodgy stream in the middle of the night/early morning. The internet has better distractions than waiting for the fourth goal to go in...

I don't consider myself a football-supporting wanker, but the people who made the changes to the train service back to London Euston to get back home most certainly are. A combination of price hikes and timetable changes at that time mean a nightmare journey for me and a waste of my season ticket. Bring back 10 x 3pm Saturday kick offs to give Geoff Stelling more to talk about and a more balanced view of the table around 5pm.

Thanks for just chopping that part of my quote haha.

We're talking about deserting the side with 20 minutes to go. That's not nipping to the toilet or making a dash for the train, that's an egregious surrender.
I surrendered on 82 minutes. If I'd known it was going to upset you so much I'd have stayed. Until the 70th minute.
I usually stay till the death. But on Saturday I'd really have like to have left at 80mins, particularly because of the late KO time and I wanted to get to the pub. But my row in the upper Holte had stayed amazingly resolute whereas the rows in front had all scarpered. So in the spirit of die hard comradery we all stuck it out and took the piss out of the part timers (who weren't there to hear us so no fights caused).
It was a shit 15 mins tbh and I wished I'd left.

I wonder how many times in football history, a team has had more possession than the other, has had more shots than the other, has had more shots on target than the other, has had more corners than the other and should even have won on expected goals, only to lose 4-0 at home ?!
