I thought we did OK for a while.
You can't really read too much into this fixture, though. Look at the money they've spent.

Completely disagree. Since when were we happy to capitulate to the likes of Man City? We've won a European Cup! Lambert out.
-
Typical Villa fans. So we gave up a couple of goals late, but we still won 4-2. Blah, blah, blah clean sheets... I love Lambert's approach but it will leave holes at the back and Man City have spent lots. They'll be gutted only scoring twice. Fuck them. Cue the media not giving us any credit and MOTD putting us on last.
-
A famous day.
-
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
-
Unbelievable!
-
Unbelievable 2nd half - this could give us a massive lift in confidence - fantastic half :)
-
How?
But, YYYEESSSSSSSSS
-
amazing
who needs Benteke ;)
-
Fantastic win. Snatch and grab. City were complacent. For all their dominance, Guzan didn't have to make too many difficult saves.
We were pretty poor first half. Honestly, those goals seemed to come from nowhere, but who the fuck cares. 3 points is 3 points. Aside from the goals I thought we defended very well. From the 70th minute on our defence was superb. They need to keep up this level. Bacuna looks great at right back. Tony Moon was good today.
Sylla and KEA were very good second half. Kozak went through the wringer today.
Man of the match for me was Wiemann. Though he really struggled to get in the game, in the space of 10 minutes he won us the game. First with a barnstorming run leading to the freekick. Then ghosting in for his winning goal. Great to see. Thats what he needs to be doing to step up to the next level. Hes got to be winning games for us, particularly in the absence of Benteke.
-
I absolutely adore this club!
-
Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable.
What can you say? Well done lads! I have no idea, no clue at all how that happened, but well done!
-
staggering.
-
This is what football is all about and why I love the villa.
And, I am munching away on a tasty dish of humble pie after negativity earlier this week. Delighted to be eating it.
-
In all my years I've never seen us play so badly and win against such a good side.
I am (joyfully) all over the place.
-
This great result is the first read out by the sensuously voiced Charlotte Green in the classifieds. A positive start.

At the end of the day we'll win games like today and lose games we dominate and wonder how. This will do us so much good today, and we scored twice without Gabby and Benteke
-
That was some crazy shit
-
I criticise this lot quite a lot, but I am fecked if I can work this one out. I will take the win and being above Manure all day long.
-
The first result read by Charlotte Green in her first broadcast is Aston Villa 3 Manchester City 2. May she be our taliswoman.
-
One thing I often forget to remember is how predictably unpredictable the Villa are.
Fantastic. I don't know how we did it, but fantastic all the same.
-
I hope a certain poster enjoyed his day shopping or whatever it was he was going to do instead of going down the match.
-
Fabulous and sorry to say it but fuck you Pat Murphy for writing Villa off on R5 after 10 minutes.
-
Great result, get in there!
-
This is for PWS.I am John Gregory and I claim MY £5.
-

Thrice Toronto thrice ;)
-
it was men against boys for the majority of the first half but they really stepped up second half. F'ing well done lads. enjoy your weekend all....
-

Was gonna say that. He He
-
2 points ahead of Utd.
Now we need to follow up with a win against Hull. That'll be tougher than we might expect, but there's no point beating Man City and then not turning up against Hull. 3 league wins on the bounce going into the int break would be fantastic.
-
Lambert really got it up the midfield in the second half. The KEA goal came from when Clark, instead of launching it, played it short to Delph who worked some space and found KEA, launching the attack. It's so obvious how much better we are when we pass it short.
The third goal, however, was hilarious.
-
Proper shit 1st half........Amazing second half. I lost a load of money but fook that we're 9th
-
Never in doubt
-
Fabulous and sorry to say it but fuck you Pat Murphy for writing Villa off on R5 after 10 minutes.
You should never be sorry to say "fuck you" to Pat Murphy.
-

Thrice Toronto thrice ;)
Shit that's right!

The San Andreas fault got papered over today
-
Watch this in my local with 2 city fan mates , surrounded by city fans. When 3rd went in supped my pint and left pub. And had tense 20 minutes not looking at my phone
Going enjoy my manc night out with a red and a blue, fuck them
-
Superb result, wasn't expecting it but just superb.
-
That bug eyed fool Moyes means that we still won't be first on Match Of The Day.
-
I have only bet on us twice this season, and both of those were for us to win against arsenal and man city. I simply could not resist 8/1 and 6/1 respectively. I think I may bet more often 😉
I await the next time we are ridiculously priced, although I didn't disagree lol
-
I think I will have a lie down and savour the moment and ease my sore throat from that 3rd goal - what an amazing last hour it has been :D
-
The San Andreas fault got papered over today
Not really. We're hardly perfect, but the way we came out second half and immediately passed it bravely from the back showed that Lambert does want them to play the right way. Sometimes he manages it, sometimes he doesn't, and a Hoolahan-type player would help him no end, but when he gets it right it is very encouraging.
-
First things first it's an absolutely fantastic and unexpected result, so well done. It was noticeable that the first two goals came from moves that started with passing along the deck and movement and the club must realise and learn from that. The third goal was very route one, but it was a sensible move because it was two against two so we had a better chance. I hope the tactics we set up with were as a result of injuries and we don't set up like that in future, because we need to be far more proactive in future. Citeh should have beaten us but we showed character. In future we need to show a lot more quality to get consistent results though. However it was a great result.
-
The San Andreas fault got papered over today
How about we just enjoy the moment? And if you think things are that bad at the club you're deluded. We struggle at home to play the way we like to play. That needs to be fixed. But San Andreas fault it isn't
-
That bug eyed fool Moyes means that we still won't be first on Match Of The Day.
I'm pretty sure we will be 1st on motd but those tossers at sky have gone with Man U as game of the day - fools.
-
may I add, for those not watching on dodgy streams, If you doubt for a second Trevor Francis is a complete and utter t##t, don't. I have never shouted so many profanities at a laptop in all my days
-
Home win, back to back league wins, resting players midweek paying off, winning without Benteke...
-
I certainly owe an apology to this team. Never in a million years did I predict that. Two wins on the bounce, some excitement at Villa Park at last and only four points off the top. Its certainly not dull following this team.
-
I had literally forgotten the last time we scored direct from a free kick. If Bacuna can produce a few more of those, he'll be worth his weight in gold.
-
Fabulous and sorry to say it but fuck you Pat Murphy for writing Villa off on R5 after 10 minutes.
You should never be sorry to say "fuck you" to Pat Murphy.
Lambo is politely doing that on 5live right now, rebutting his negative questions.
-
Nine points after the start we have had is fookin' amazing. We should be confident we can get a result every time we step on the park.
This, could, do wonders for our confidence at home too. Odd that we play better when there are empty seats at Villa Park.
-
may I add, for those not watching on dodgy streams, If you doubt for a second Trevor Francis is a complete and utter t##t, don't. I have never shouted so many profanities at a laptop in all my days
If it's any consolation, I though he sounded even angrier than you!
-
Didn`t see that coming - literally I didn`t see it - opting to stay at home and catch up on various things - well done Villa!
(still no clean sheet again though ) ;)
-
I had literally forgotten the last time we scored direct from a free kick. If Bacuna can produce a few more of those, he'll be worth his weight in gold.
Indeed, Lowton had a great season last year but its hard to see him getting back in anytime soon .

I was only joking, I will enjoy it. Its hard not to be worried about the difference in class. If technically you can't match them, you have to let them know they are in a game - we couldn't get the ball in the first half. I do class it as a bit of a fluke.
Its a win however!
-
Is it just me, or is everybody on here a little, well, stunned?
-
we were lucky at numerous times today but fair fucking play to the lads for sticking with it. Just superb lads.
-
That bug eyed fool Moyes means that we still won't be first on Match Of The Day.
I'm pretty sure we will be 1st on motd but those tossers at sky have gone with Man U as game of the day - fools.
Ah, thanks. I was about to check that. At least I can remain married because Strictly is on tonight.
-
Fabulous and sorry to say it but fuck you Pat Murphy for writing Villa off on R5 after 10 minutes.
Tosser. I loathe him nearly as much as I do Chelsea and that's saying something. I am still in shock and feel quite light headed
-

I did after 56 mins to be fair - but fair play , they got stronger as the game went on .
-

Ashley Young vs.... Sunderland/Stoke/Bolton (?) I think in the Houllier season. Solano and Staunton used to score them too.
-

N'Zogbia against West Ham last season.
Anyway fantastic win for Villa. Didn't expect that one bit but will take it every day of the week.
-
Great atmosphere outside VP Fantastic result well done to all more later
-
The San Andreas fault got papered over today
That's true to a degree, but you need to a consider that we had several injuries. The second half was better, we tried to play it on the deck(which resulted in two goals) and we pressed better. There's no doubt we need more quality on the ball, but we showed great character and also I don't think Lambert would set up a team like that if we had everyone available.
-
Just think lambert got it right with no gabby , ok ore ,benteke and Westwood. That's like United losing RVP, vidic , Rooney and carrick . We not shit and won and beat a team that destroyed Man U. Enjoy the moment
-

I have to cook my wife's birthday dinner so that's a relief. Chinese and then sticky toffee pudding. Oh hang on, I have't got SKY anyway...
-
may I add, for those not watching on dodgy streams, If you doubt for a second Trevor Francis is a complete and utter t##t, don't. I have never shouted so many profanities at a laptop in all my days
You lucky lucky bastard. It's clear that you have never owned an Acer.
-
As you all know this is a massive result. Looking at the squad in terms of age and experience, the first 6 fixtures were always going to be a struggle. In fact going into today I thought we looked like a team that had gone 8 rounds with Ali. And in football terms we had. Looking at the fixtures I thought we would be somewhere between 4 and 7 points. As it is we have 9 and have more points and A BETTER GOAL DIFFERENCE than MAN U. I think the confidence from this result without, Gabby Jores and Christian, will be massive.
I know some could have played better this season, but there is always the pressure of a young kid or coming to a new country or just the step up. So fair play to all of them
-
Ridiculous. When the second City goal went in I thought the players' heads would drop. Fair play. I'm stunned.
-

Not to mention the fact that we were playing against (I think) the most expensively assembled team in the league's history. They were always going to have more possession / chances, but the key is we took the chances we created. 4 shots on target, 3 goals. Wonderfully clinical.
-
Andi will gain great confidence from getting our winner too. Shocked, what a truly bizarre end to the game
-
Who got MOM?.......Bacuna for me, although another good game by KEA,andi thought Vlaar was very solid again.
-
No Gabby. No Benteke. No Westwood. No Lowton. Who needs 'em??!! And my heartfelt thanks go to the Holte, for collectively sucking in a goal for the first time in long, long while. Still can't believe it went in. And I reckon KEA's sat in the dressing room still convinced he was offside. Roll on MOTD!!
-
Hello to the top half of the table.
-
I absolutely adore this club!
Simply this.
-
I've still got no idea how we won that match, non.
But we did. For now that'll do
Enjoy your Saturday night out
-
31 points from safety! C'mon Villa! ;)
-
We came back twice and then found a winner against a side costs many, many millions more. That takes some doing. We found a way to win without our best and most influential player. This will give our lads huge belief.
-
31 points from safety! C'mon Villa! ;)
And 4 points off top spot in the league ;)
Ps and having arguably played the most difficult opening schedule of any team in the division
-

Yep it's an impressive result, I just hope they realise that the first two goals were as a result of passing to feet and a bit of movement.
-
That is why we go week after week. Get. The. Fuck. In!
I fucking love Villa!
-
I still can not believe we won that.
That first half was McLeishian in the frustration, lack of ambition, piss poor passing, everything, as bad as we've played for a long time.
Mind you, god knows how many times last year we got nothing when we deserved something, so fuck it, I'll gladly take that.

I agree, but I'm thinking and hoping our approach was influenced by injuries and we wouldn't play like that again. There's no way ever we would have come back like that under Mcleish.

Brilliant team and manager!
And clearly the talismanic effect of your visit took a few days to kick in, as well.
Well done!
-
I genuinely think the players lack the belief they can win at Villa Park. Today will go a long way to changing that.
-
Days like today remind me why I support the greatest team the world has ever seen. Aston Villa. Aston Villa FC
-
Who got MOM?.......Bacuna for me, although another good game by KEA,andi thought Vlaar was very solid again.
Kea for me , it's not so much the 3 points but the huge confidence that a win like this at villa park could give us - a first half to forget but a 2nd to remember for a long long time.
-

Indeed. It was all about the passing second half - I get the feeling Lambert had a word because straight away after the break we started playing it shorter and to feet, which made all the difference.
-
Stunned and proud of the lads today. Expected a proper hiding, even more so at 0-1... Bacuna looks a very useful player and Kozak is a handful.
Going to enjoy tonight!
-
The opening fixtures could have been kinder but I think we've given a good account of ourselves so far.

It certainly did and there was some movement in the midfield, in particularly Weimann dropping in deep which led to the free kick.
-
The back line were magnificent. I don't think we were lucky at all.
Does not resolve the problem of breaking down defensively minded teams at home, but 13/2 against and the total goals scored spread were generous to say the least.

Hmm at times they were good, but the goals we conceded were awful.
-
I gave up at half time in full depressed mode and decided to go for a swim..
45 minutes later and what a transformation...
Even gobby Savage has just said Villa were great?????
Manchester ' supporters' get on the phone so we can feel your pain!!
-
we looked liked a championship team at times and not a top one , yet we beat a team who could win this league easy ;)
-
Best thing is getting two goals from midfield to get the win
-
Well I didn't see that coming at all. Fanastic result well done lads. :)

That manner was disappointing, but I think in open play our organisation is getting better. At set pieces we still struggle a little.
But from 70 minutes onwards we defended as good as I've seen under Lambo. Bacuna certainly looks right at home on the right side. Tony Moon was back on form. I thought he dealt with Navas pretty well too when he came on.
Now comes the matter of winning games we should possibly expect to. We let ourselves down against Newcastle, so we've got to be well on it for Hull.
-
Immensely proud of them today
-

Where do we send you the money?
-
Is it just me, or is everybody on here a little, well, stunned?
You're not alone, James. First two Villa goals I screamed out in joy but when the third went in I just silently looked at the screen.
First half we got ran all over the pitch but managed to almost contain everything they threw at us and mainly restricting them to shoot from distance. We even defended the corners well. The problem was we offered nothing up front.
Second half we managed to string a few passes together and despite City still looking threatening, we started using the midfield. KEA's goal was marginally offside but after that we stuck to what we're good at but with little end result. The free kick was a beauty and as Man City found out, if you don't take your chances expect the unexpected. We certainly got lucky today but that was more down to our lack of confidence on the ball, City's ability to use up every inch of the pitch and the fact every Villa player battled for 95 minutes.
Considering we were without Benteke, Gabby and Jores, arguably our three best players, you have to give the lads credit for the effort. The fans certainly played their part and it was great to see Villa Park rocking again. After suffering 9 defeats in our last 13 home games in the league, a win today was the least our fans deserved.
Saying all that, I'm still completely stunned.
-
How the hell we win that I'll never know. They were on another level to us.
However, to our credit we stuck at it and kept going. We made them make mistakes by good pressure.
Deserved something from Liverpool and Chelski but didn't get anything, so will gladly take this. It's a funny old game.
As a side, I think when Kozak has the confidence Benteke has built up over time, he could end up being a good player for us.
-
Well, well well! Not so great in the first half but given the massive gulf in money between the two teams it was to be expected.
What a fucking goal by Bacuna! After that they just imploded, absolutely delighted.
-
we looked liked a championship team at times and not a top one , yet we beat a team who could win this league easy ;)
Completely agree with. A lot of people on here, twitter and facebook obviously didnt watch the game and just see the result. We were very poor and any other day Man. City would of taken us to the cleaners. Im really pleased we won and took all the points but some of us are papering over the cracks.
-
Fuckin ecstatic, delighted, overjoyed, stunned, in heaven, on top of the world, high as a kite, Aston Villa I love you. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) ;) :) :)
-
I knew we'd win. I voted 'Win' on the pre-match poll, so I am not the least bit stunned.
Just saying.

Savage and the media just say whatever after each game. They just see the results and highlights and base it on that. They don't watch a game to see what happens.
-
I hope the optimists on here put a fortune on the Villa today and are rightly enjoying counting the cash tonight!
-
The San Andreas fault got papered over today
I think the gulf between the 2 clubs is more like the Grand Canyon
and you know what they tightroped across it today..weyhey
-

Before today we probably had one of the best records of defending set-pieces in the Premier League. They scored on their 9th corner - that was the problem; the sheer number we were giving away and that can be linked to ball retention. We have to get better at keeping the ball.
Stunning win though. I was convinced we would concede a late goal (or two) but we seem to have got better at closing out games over the calendar year.
Benteke's now one game closer to coming back and the midfielders have started contributing in his absence.
Massive result. If we had lost this, we would all have been looking down and saying how crucial the Hull and Everton games are now. A result out of nowhere like this does so much to take pressure off them.
-
All credit must go to saunders_heroes. He called it.

Yep we certainly papered over the fact we had 5 first choice players out including one of the best strikers in the league.
-
Today I saw, Delph, Lowton, Kozak and Bennett in the car park. Villa won. Wolfie walked past me. Villa won. Ellis drove past me. Rob Bishop talked to me. Villa won. I had no wait for a 7 after the game. Villa won.
I've had worse Saturdays.

Savage was watching and outraged by our goal which makes it all the sweeter :)
@RobbieSavage8: Terrible decision for the villa goal , linesman has to give offside !
-
Never in doubt was it?
Hard to believe we have picked up 6 points from last 2 performances, guess balances up the Liverpool and Chelsea results.
Thought we were dreadful today. Hopeless really for most of it. Delph improved a lot after half time and Luna dealt well with Navas when he came on.
Really hope Lambert doesn't use this result to justify such tactics again. None of our centre backs are comfortable with the ball so pointless playing three.

What cracks are they then? Winning two in a row with one of the best players in the league out injured? Without Okore, Westwood and Gabby as well? Or the cracks of 9 points from 6 games which have made up the hardest opening 6 games I can remember the Villa ever having?
-
Yes Savage... like Terry's handball, Clark's handball and Helanius's sexual assault on Tuesday night... fcuk off and go dancing savage.
-
I hope in a few weeks or months time people aren't rewriting history claiming this was a great performance like they did after Anfield last season.
A great win, YES. But far from a good performance
Lets wallow in the 3 points for now but we've GOT to demand better on the pitch otherwise we're going nowhere
-

Bollocks and scallops.
-
I would certainly have been delighted with 9 points from these 6 games against probably 4 of the top 6 as well - lets beat hull and push on from there - its a rollercoaster of a ride but lets enjoy these highs .
-
I'm going to need to stay away from more games. What a win, really didn't see this coming at all.

I agree, but I'm thinking and hoping our approach was influenced by injuries and we wouldn't play like that again. There's no way ever we would have come back like that under Mcleish.
Agreed. McLeish would have taken 0-1.

I still can't believe we scored 3 bloody goals today !
That was some game. I bloody love it when games finish like that, the comradarie and bonhomie as people leve the ground is ace.
It needs to happen far more often.
I thought our 3 midfielders today were stunning. They did not offer a great deal offensively, but god blimey they worked hard.
If Delph does not get an international call up soon then the national manager needs shooting.
Days like this make it all worth while, don't they ?
Well done boys, you done good.
-
Can you enjoy a win against most expensive team in Europe!
-
Not sure what happened there. At half time it felt like a re-run of the spurs from Wednesday.
Bonus win! Sylla's energy was tremendous. Weimann was just not in it then a run resulting in a free kick for the equaliser and a toe poke for the winner. Under so much pressure in first 60 minutes but battled away.
Mind you I did post this was the eleventh premier game with this referee and amazingly we haven't lost.
-
fantastic result. bet i wasnt the only one when the board went up for five minutes injury time to think "well at least we've got a point". Great team spirit.

Yes we know how the game went but lets celebrate a great win tonight and enjoy it !
I believe that's what i just said
-
I have no voice but a big smile. Well done Villa.
-
we looked liked a championship team at times and not a top one , yet we beat a team who could win this league easy ;)
Completely agree with. A lot of people on here, twitter and facebook obviously didnt watch the game and just see the result. We were very poor and any other day Man. City would of taken us to the cleaners. Im really pleased we won and took all the points but some of us are papering over the cracks.
What cracks are they then? Winning two in a row with one of the best players in the league out injured? Without Okore, Westwood and Gabby as well? Or the cracks of 9 points from 6 games which have made up the hardest opening 6 games I can remember the Villa ever having?
They all played against Liverpool and Newcastle and we were absolute junk. Today we were bollocks...you think we can keep playing like that and pick up 3pts every week!??? Don't get me wrong I'm as chuffed as everyone else on winning today but I see some major flaws in our style or lack of it.

Exactly, we're shit...I just word it differently.

I love being shit and winning two league games in a row without one of the best strikers in Europe. on the pitch I hope we are this shit forever.
-
Great win!
With our injuries and their quality we were never going to batter them. Our only chance was to work hard and take any chances that came our way. I'm really proud of the lads and all of them can hold their heads up high tonight.
Special mention for Sylla who got abused all game by the misery-arse sat behind me but worked unbelievably hard.

I didn't think we were totally junk against Pool and was two world class saves from getting a result. That was compounded with playing after a tough midweek Match against Chelsea in which we should have got a point and was unlucky not to have all three. Newcastle I will give you though.
But with our current injury jinx, I'm sure any imaginative players bought would be out for 12 months by now
-
@RobbieSavage8: Terrible decision for the villa goal , linesman has to give offside !
If he'd been offside, then I'm sure he would've. But he wasn't. So ner-ner-ne-ner-ner
-
I really haven't stopped grinning since Andi's goal went in. What a feeling.
I don't think we were lucky, but you could say that we were a little fortunate to score three times out of four chances.
Oh, and whoever said Francis is a prick was spot on. He was salivating when it was 1 - 2.

We all know we're not the greatest side in the league and that there are still lots of problems
But we had our two best attackers and arguably best midfielder out today plus Lowton and Westwood missing who we're crucial to our more pleasing passing football last season
Lets just enjoy the win, know that if gabby is back next week we'll have a great chance of a third straight win and that benteke looks like being back reasonably soon
We need more quality in midfield. Of course we do. But we have seen the current side play good passing football on quite a few occasions. It's not really happened much this season and I'm not entirely sure why, but I'd expect it to come back at some point
Well need 10 games to be safe from relegation. We've got three already despite the hardest start to the season I've ever seen villa have. And we're six points up on the same games last season
I plan to enjoy motd but not start thinking we can get top 8.
-
Typical of Villa to summon up a win against a side everyone had us losing by a hatful to.
Here's what Komapny says:
"Stunned Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, pictured above applauding his side's travelling fans at the final whistle, tries to explain how they lost against Aston Villa after taking the lead twice.
"If we played that game 10 times, we would win nine of them," Kompany said. "It was a very unlucky result and a very unlucky day. Villa had three chances and scored three goals and that was it. The first goal was offside and we did not get the decision - but every time we made a mistake, we conceded."
So, they were unlucky.
-
The moment Weimann stabbed the ball past hart and time seemed to stand still reminded me of dalians scoring at Wembley when Bruce chased it back but it beat him into the net - truly special moments :)
-
When Sylla starts, we win.
Yep. I don't think it's a coincidence that results take an upswing when he's in the team.

Yep. I don't think it's a coincidence that results take an upswing when he's in the team.
Though we lost midweek with Sylla in the side he was very good indeed and I'm delighted for him that he's come out of the French second division to look very competent at PL level.
-
To my eyes it looks like that ball goes from City's defenders to KEA in 1-1 goal, and as far as I know, then it can't be offside.
-
My head's still buzzing. The noise in the Holte in the second half was just absolutely fantastic - best in a long time. Don't know how we won - they had the better players, dominated possession, had no end of corners and attempts on goal, but we scored more goals and that's all that matters. Fair play to the team for not letting their heads drop after we went behind again just after getting level. That third goal was like watching in slow motion - would the ball reach the line, would the defender get there to clear it - almost orgasmic when it went in. Great free kick by Bacuna. Just one question - KEA looked marginally off-side for his. Was he? Who cares - about time we had a bit of luck after the decisions we haven't had in the last few weeks. Islay single malt beckons

Was offside but so what , we deserve a decision our way after some of the shit decisions against us recently - swings and roundabouts.

Must admit i was very disappointed when we signed him. Happy to hold my hands up and admit I was bang wrong. He played a huge part in saving us from relegation and is continuing to show he belongs at this level.
Doesn't say a lot for the scouts at other french clubs though that they let him go unnoticed for so long.

And one was a Villa mistake and the other was someone scoring with their back. Considering we are supposedly so shit, we scored the best goals as well. Although KEA was offside, the pass from Bacuna was extremely clever and his free kick just made Hart stand and watch.

I'm gutted about today, left home for the match at 10.30 today, got stuck on the M25 for hours, wasn't moving and had to turn round as the road was closed, if I had made it we would have lost for certain! On the plus side we were shit and won, the sign of a championship winning team...
-
The players seem to really give a shit both when we are crap and when we do well - Luna and Bacuna looked genuinely delighted
-
The ref took an age to walk to the linesman after the third goal, I couldn't er celebrate properly.

Sorry.to blow my own...but I did.

This great result is the first read out by the sensuously voiced Charlotte Green in the classifieds. A positive start.
The first result read by Charlotte Green in her first broadcast is Aston Villa 3 Manchester City 2. May she be our taliswoman.
Just in case anyone missed it... http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01hpjm6
you don't have to wait long ;)
Not entirely sure about her reading, a bit fast and without the intonation for losing and winning, but who cares!!!!!!

Blimey if this is what happens when I miss a home game, I'll happily remain in Villa Park exile for the rest of the year.
Flipping brilliant result that, more of the same v Spurs please.
-
Today I saw, Delph, Lowton, Kozak and Bennett in the car park. Villa won. Wolfie walked past me. Villa won. Ellis drove past me. Rob Bishop talked to me. Villa won. I had no wait for a 7 after the game. Villa won.
I've had worse Saturdays.
We saw Mortimer, Cowans, Morley, Lambert and Vlaar kindly signings autographs for some kids and two saddos.
Can we lose 5-0 every week please? Well, that was my forecast and there is now a huge omelette on my face, I am delighted to say.
Just before Bacuna's goal, Albrighton and Tonev were about to come on. El Ahmadi went to get a drink, probably to find out who was being subbed. What a game changing moment that goal was. Subs jackets went straight back on.

Exactly, when bacuna released it kea was slightly offside before any deflection and the fact the ball went to him and he scored makes him active , and could have been flagged - the fact it wasn't given is justice because its about time we got a decision in our favour .
-
Those of you watching on TV what was the run to the dugout after the first goal all about?

Exactly. I'll see anyone's KEA was offside and raise them a John Terry handball and Jan Vertonghen pulling down Helenius's shorts.

It was offside but then if you think of the decisions that have gone against us this, let alone last one, it is a small turn in our direction. However, I don't think it was even deflected, it looked like a smart dink between the players to KEA.
-
Those of you watching on TV what was the run to the dugout after the first goal all about?
Just seemed to go to the bench and get mobbed by the subs. You don't see that much over in the PL. Seems to be a continental thing, but long may it continue.

Bacuna is looking impressive , we have needed a free kick specialist for a while now and although I feel sorry for Lowton I think he will struggle to get back in the team if bacuna continues to impress.

I've had time to calm down now, and I still can't quite fathom how we came away with the three points.
The first half was absolute bollocks, really awful stuff, but credit to Lambert, the team came out in the second half and looked much more motivated, there was some more fluid movement and Weimann had clearly been instructed to link up the play more, while KEA was given licence to make some forward runs by the look of it. The counter attacks actually started getting somewhere instead of petering out on the halfway line.
Actually, it was a similar story on Tuesday night - first half was rubbish, but Lambert made some tweaks and we looked improved in the second. So at least the manager's having a positive impact and is able to turn things around when they're going to shite. Fair do's.

Great teams grind out wins. Happy :)
-
Just back to Manchester a short while ago. Its awfully quiet.......
Anyway not sure how we won but win we did. I thought it was a very gutsy display and despite our frustrations as fans at the extremely limited set up Lambert put out I have to say the players delivered on it very well. When we tried to pass the ball and players showed movement we put some nice little passing moves together but it was all too infrequent.
Guzan - 7 - Looked solid and for all Citehs possession didn't have a huge amount to do
Bacuna - 8 - Worked hard and put a shift in as he was often outnumbered 2 on 1. Sublime goal and assist
Vlaar - 7.5 - Much better.
Baker - 7 - Good interceptions and looked solid enough
Clark - 6 - Looked hesitant today and didn't step out enough to use his ability on the ball and create space for others.
Luna - 8.5 - My MOM, marked Milner out the game in my view and hardly gave Navas a kick. It was his harassing and pressing that seemed to give the rest of the team a lift in the second half.
El Ahamadi - 8 - Good goal and worked harder as the game progressed
Delph - 8 - this lad is coming of age and gave a very disciplined and committed performance in front of the back 3
Sylla - 7 - Incredible workrate but maybe not his best day on the ball
Weimann - 8 - Ran his nads off to little effect but then scored the vital goal
Kozak - 7 - Worked his balls off for the team and got precisely no service but his challenge from Brads long ball led to the winner
Bowery - 7 - Seems to have bulked up over the summer and did a job on that mouthy twonk Ya Ya Toure when he came on
Lambert - ? - I can't work out if that was a genius tactical set up to completely tie up the centre of the pitch so Citeh couldn't play through us and then rely on good defending to ensure their wide players didn't capitalise or we were just plain lucky!
Us lot - 7 - Not bad when the team started playing
Right time for dinner.....
-
We are third highest scorers this season behind only arsenal and city - and ahead of Chelsea, spurs , and man utd in our goals tally .

Happiness is a team called Villa tonight, well done boys.
-
I'm going to annoy a few people with this but I don't think the first half was too bad. Yes we offered nothing but they only scored with a corner and the only other shot on target was the dzeko one that any professional keeper would expect to save. On top of that we did it in a very efficient way, we weren't running around pressing them and chasing shadows, we just sat in and let them have the ball in front of us. What we didn't do well was get them chasing to win the ball back but other than that we were doing what I think Lambert wanted, which was get them to do the running and frustrate them.
In the second half we opened up a bit more (we had no choice as it was but I think we'd have done the same anyway) and looked like we had the legs on them. Certainly towards the end we looked a lot fitter, which was largely down to the approach in the 1st half and meant that they struggled to push for an equaliser.
I think it was a very professional performance against a side that came expecting, and requiring, to win. I don't buy the argument that Man City got complacent either, they've had a bad time away this season so I don't think they'd have looked a 1 goal lead and decided it was won, certainly not at the times we scored, I think we made it difficult for them to break us down, that they only scored from 2 corners tells 2 stories, we still do't defend them well enough and we do defend better than many people give us credit for in open play.

I like the 3 5 2 formation - imagine better wing backs (Bacuna if he improves, maybe Lowton when he returns to form) and Benteke/Gabby as the front 2
Loved today, football and an atmosphere returned to VP !
-
The only genuinely quality goal was Bacuna's free kick which was sublime. We got lucky today but it was coming after being shafted by the luck fairy for ages. The first half was abysmal but the second much improved and that's heartening.
I want to see a convincing 90 minute beating of an opponent in the league. But the fact that this didn't happen against this decades Goliath isn't cause for concern.
Well done to the team for staying in the game.
-
Typical of Villa to summon up a win against a side everyone had us losing by a hatful to.
Of course their goals were beautifully crafted & not the results of mistakes or poor defending! Fuck 'em
-
I completely understand people saying we need to be better at keeping possession as we just invite pressure but part of me feels it may also have a detrimental effect on us if we try more possession football. We're direct and like to set up chances as quick as possible when we have the ball whilst catching the opposition defence off guard, whether that be through long balls for the speed merchants to chase or a quick bit of one touch passing to set someone away this appears to be our main strength going forward. If we try and slow things down and incorporate a few extra passes into our game will we see the goals dry up?
-
There was me before the game just praying for clean sheet.
-
Bacuna is looking impressive , we have needed a free kick specialist for a while now and although I feel sorry for Lowton I think he will struggle to get back in the team if bacuna continues to impress.
Kea was very impressive today and deserves praise too.
Definitely. That pair worked well together. I was complaining in the first half about our lack of a free kick taker.
-
There was me before the game just praying for clean sheet.
There was me before the game strolling across Aston park praying the defeat wouldn't be too embarrassing. Enjoyed my humble pie for tea!
-
Got to the ground, saw the line up and panicked.
Two hours later I was buzzing!
Shows what I know. :)

I agree with you, and if I compare the mood of the fans in the concourse of upper Witton Lane with that against Newcastle, when he conceded just before half time, then a lot of others agree as well. We held our shape, and most of their attempts were from long range. The back line was the best coordinated in terms of the offside trap that I have seen for a long, long time.
The near post weakness should be addressed as a matter of urgency, to be sure.
-
Not long back. A fantastic win!
We contained them pretty well first half, I struggle to remember clear cut chances, perhaps the one that squirted just by the post. Corners are definitely our soft underbelly. We offered next to nothing going forward, but at one nil you're always in it.
Second half I thought Bacuna was pushed ten or fifteen yards further up the pitch and we really got into the game in an attacking sense, a good deal more, while maintaining the deep, disciplined defence.
A lovely little dink through to KEA, and I dont care if he was half a yard or half a mile off side after what happened up there last seaaon, and we're back in it. Right on queue though our soft underbelly is exposed again.
Andi deserves to be praised for his marauding run that lead to the free kick that Bacuna effortlessly stroked in. High balls are Kompany's bread and butter, but when we did get it down and pass it or work the channels, we made them look a bit more ordinary.
The third was great. What a shambles the City back four and Hart were!
I want to heap praise on Lambert as he got it tactically spot on. City created very little and scored from a couple of corners, which is incredibly frustrating, but pleasing the way the defence manfully stood up to them.
A second point is that I thought we were too negativw in our approach first half. Whether the way Lambert pushed players higher up the pitch was a planned matter; i.e. box clever and hang in at 0-0 or 0-1 I don't know, but we limited a side that smashed Yanited into next week.
I said before the game that I felt we needed a repeat of that 2-0 style win against Chelsea to break a mental block and we got it.
I have a lot of faith in this squad and Lambert. I hope those boasting before the game about how little they cared and how they gave their tickets away watch the highlights and feel gutted that their faith waivered.
-
When the two teams lined up one was worth nearly £200 mil and the other £24 mil, so you would expect a fairly uneven match in terms of possession. There was however only one team out on the pitch and one team that seemed to enjoy the goals when they scored.
-
This is from the Indy , a lot of postive stuff in here and I loved the bit about " Old men battering the hoardings " !................Godzvilla ! ( in Mexico , unfortunately , definitely missed a good un . ) .
It has been a long time since Villa Park looked and sounded like this, a rhapsody in claret and blue. Perfect strangers embraced, old men battered hoardings with their bare hands, stewards communed with all and sundry. Well they might. Aston Villa were nowhere for 45 minutes, lucky to be only one goal behind a Manchester City side that looked capable of anything they pleased. Yet unbelievably, victory was Villa’s at the close.
How to evaluate the spirit shown by a home side shredded 4-0 five days earlier in the same stadium, and increasingly shorn of confidence and belief? Only four of Villa’s previous 13 home games ended in anything other than defeat. Perhaps some things are simply beyond analysis. What we know is that Villa grew to a station way beyond the sum of their parts after the break, refusing to be denied their share of a day Birmingham eclipsed Manchester in the coming together of second cities.
To single out any for special praise would be an abuse. It is enough to suggest that Fabian Delph, Yacouba Sylla, and Karim El Ahmadi, the central cogs in a five-man midfield, had little trouble sleeping last night. City might have had half a dozen in a first half of absolute control. Had the Villa portion of the pitch boasted a shower block and toilets it could not have been more of a campsite for City, who had too many guns, stretching Villa left and right.
Long before the first goal came you sensed that Villa knew as well as City that it was on its way. Incredibly it took 44 minutes to arrive. Less of a surprise was that Yaya Touré should score it.
Touré is a wonder of the modern game, labouring as if carrying a sack of coal on his back yet still managing to elude defenders, and positively eating up the ground when the moment calls. He was first to the ball when Samir Nasri’s corner was headed clear, side-footing past keeper Brad Guzan.
The game changed utterly seven minutes into the second half with a goal brilliantly crafted by Leandro Bacuna, who slipped a neat reverse pass through for El Ahmadi to turn and rifle a shot that left Joe Hart helpless on the seat of his pants. When Edin Dzeko headed City back in front from a corner, City must have felt the danger had passed.
But something was stirring in the young legs of this Villa side and driven forward via the Ahmadi-Delph-Sylla axis they were a team transformed. Not that City were commensurately diminished. Forward they poured magnificently supported by the flying full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Aleksandar Kolarov. Nasri gave way to the jet heeled Jesus Navas and Dzeko to Stevan Jovetic, a £50 million athletic transfusion right there. At the end of the first half Villa were at sixes and sevens trying to keep City at bay. Here they were composed, led heroically by skipper Ron Vlaar.
Bacuna levelled with a well-taken free-kick in the 73rd minute and two minutes later Andreas Weimann sprinted between napping defenders to race on to Guzan’s clearance and guide the ball past Hart for the winner. Villa Park convulsed.
“It is a massive result for us,” said Villa boss Paul Lambert. “I’m proud of those boys. The three lads in the middle were excellent, worked really hard. But we are a team. We are all in this together, the crowd too. The Holte End was magnificent today. City had possession in the first half but not many teams have ball against them. This is a team favoured to win the Premier League, looking to go all the way in the Champions League so that tells you the magnitude of the result for us.” His counterpart Manuel Pellegrini was struggling to explain the outcome. “At the moment we haven’t a victory away. Today we played similar to the way we played against Manchester United. It’s frustrating, but that’s football. We had a lot of chances and possession, the game was under our control but we didn’t take our chances,” he said. “This is the nature of the Premier League, something that I knew about and that I have seen. Any team can win. The differences are very small. We played the same in the second half as the first, what was different was the goal.”
Despite the result City go to a Champions League tie with Bayern Munich with a clearer sense of what Pellegrini wants and how the team knits together. As contradictory as it sounds this was a powerful City display. Had the ball bounced their way they would have been comprehensively out of Villa’s reach. This was not the insipid showing that saw them stuffed at Cardiff and embarrassed by Stoke. And the way this season is unfolding this was not the worst day to have a freak reverse.
Villa’s challenge is to repeat the intensity at Hull next week. “We’ll enjoy this, but you can’t dwell,” Lambert said. “We have to go again.”

Their two goals were simply due to shit defending from corners. Our 3 were class.
Although Weimann's goal was a result of some of the worst defending of the day.
-
Comical.

I said on the pre match thread I was a bit disappointed with the negativity, I can understand why but I was confident and I think if everyone is worried all the time does it get to the players? Anyway fantastic win UTV

I loved Andi's celebration.
-
The pre-match cowardice made me a tad annoyed.
-
I wouldn't classify it as cowardice at all.
-
Well, that was unexpected. Good to see Lambert pick a team for the occasion. It was essential we competed with them physically at least so bringing in Baker and Sylla was justified. I also think Bowery played a good little cameo for the short time he was on the field, using his physique to break up their momentum. City are complaining they were robbed but for all their possession and corners they only had three shots on target, the same as us.
-
I would. It back a competition over who could out do the next person with utter bollocks such as "record defeat" or "1-7" and "I would snap your hand off for a 0-2 defeat" not to mention "I am glad I fucked my ticket off!1!" style posts.
Craven cowardice of the worst kind, not fucking worthy of the majesty of Aston Villa Football Club.

Great Win!!!!! ;D

Back in sunny lancs, was a joy to eat KFC at Keele services with my 3 boys in blakcurrant and white, surrounded by plastic mancs traveling south and genuine and generous city fans.
My 9 year old called at half time when saying were not out of it. Of course we were dominated for long periods, but no one can deny the team and squad have spirit and desire to succeed as a collective, confidence will grow and we will start dominating games against lesser opponents. Long way to go....but as I told them when leaving the stadium...that's the joy of AVFC...

Manchester has cancelled every planned party tonight as its citizens instead plan moves to Birmingham.

Just a bit.
It can be annoying when folks go into hyperbole mode, but that goes for overly optimistic too. We're all guilty of it from time to time.

He needed that too. Hope he gets some confidence back and rips it up like it was at the end of last season.

Indeed , its moments like today's equaliser and winner that make it all worthwhile - the lows may be desperate but the highs are tremendous :)

Yup, it works both ways - personally I find all that going on about people being "pants wetters" or "bed wetters" to be irritating, as well.

Quite right, Big Dick.
And may I thank you, one more time, for pole axing Beelzebub all those years ago.

Dear Mr Francis, if part of your body is level with the last man when the ball is played, you're not offside. Also, it doesn't matter a flying fcuk where you are when you actually receive the ball.

That is what a forum is for. You are welcome to your opinion. Others are welcome to theirs.

By the way, IMHO Man City fans are easily the classiest when we beat them or when they beat us out of the expensive sides. Not much whining and usually a congratulations.

They're a pretty decent bunch compared to the rest of the "Super-six".

Oh and yeah, Trevor Francis is a good enough commentator but he really should just ask Yaya Toure out on a date and have done with it. His man crush on him is just painful to listen to.
-

Probably because they have the most recent memories of being shit themselves.

I thought Lambert got his team selection and tactics spot on. I thought we were better in the first half than most on here have given us credit for. Although we, as usual, gave the ball away cheaply far too often. We had clearly set out to be solid and the challenge in the second half was to remain solid but be able to come back from being a goal behind. Bacuna was excellent for the second league game running. I am far from being a KEA fan but that was the best I have seen him play. Tony M looked far better than against Norwich. Vlaar, Clark and Baker were all good and playing all three is clearly a good option in the right games. The passion that Guzan and Weimann show whilst wearing the shirt is something money can't buy. Great game, great result and a great atmosphere. Let's go into the international break with three points off Hull and see against Spurs and Everton how big this home win has been psychologically.

Part of your body can be onside, but you can still be offside. It is where the most advanced part of your body which you can legally score with that matters.
-
I loved it today.
Intense, and never gave up hope 'cos I thought THEY were working hard to produce very little, while we just held on.
2nd half was so immense I couldn't sit down - literally - and surprised a few of my neighbours by swearing at volume - something I've not done before where I sit (stand!).
Really proud of the way we worked our socks off 2nd half and pleased that we had "the rub of the green" when it came to a few decisions - unusual against the top sides and you could see that in the reaction of the Man City players throughout. Rules is rules, but they clearly didn't think they applied to them.
Tough shit city; you got beat by a passionate group of players today who may not play the fancy stuff that you do, but took it to you and never backed down.
Proud Villain!
Love the pic of Weimann enjoying his goal with the Holte End!

Sounds right. Anyway I respect them and the shite they have had to endure for years. I genuinely hope they do well next week.

Ya Ya was not a happy bunny when Villa actually started competing with him in the second half. He should have had at least a booking for his attempted elbow and then a second yellow and red for his kick out.

I am not talking about people predicting defeats or being concerned about what Man City can do to sides; that is legitimate discussion.
I am referring to the utter shite that came from the same old faces that you wont see until 5 o'clock next Saturday and only of we'd lost.
That's not mellodramatic at all. I dont want this to sour the mood further and believe I have made my point.

That is my take on it as well. He was offside with his right foot.

Interesting Lambert only made one change and that was forced (Weimann's knock). I dont think anyone looked particularly tired during the game which was nice.

I did not know that. I thought that they'd modified the rule to benefit the attacking side by saying that as long as you're level you're OK.
I'll never understand the rules of football. I should stick to something nice an simple like Rugby Union or the NFL !!

The first result read by Charlotte Green in her first broadcast is Aston Villa 3 Manchester City 2. May she be our taliswoman.
You beat me to it Paul - my first thoughts too!
She could be the lucky Villa female to replace Virginia Bottomley ( who IIRC presented the League Cup in 1996)

That's actually correct, if the most forward part of your body with which you can legally score is level, you are onside. It's the most forward advanced part of the body bit that is important, though, doesn't matter if both your feet are level, for example, and your head is further forward, that's offside.

We were out played for large parts of that game and Citeh should have been out of sight by half time, in fact our best player was the linesman.
However they did not put us away and they got stung for their complacency and you can bet some of them had at least one eye on the CL game this week.
It is about time that we had some luck.

He was about to bring albrighton and tonev on just as we equalized, then changed his mind.

It's kind of hard to describe some of the posts on here as anything other than that though. There are many valid criticisms of the team, nobody's denying that and I'd imagine it wasn't these posters ads was referring to, but there were quite a few that went way beyond that imo.

Yeah I did wonder, the commentators said it then they didnt show up. I would have fancied Tonev today with his long range shooting. Hart was pretty piss poor. Presumably Lambert decided not to mess with a good formation.

The only changes made in recent years have been you are only offside if active and the benefit of the doubt should be given to the attacker if the linesman is unsure. (Which might have happened for us.)

If you expose an opinion, then it is there to be attacked. I haven't done anybody a disservice with those quotes, that was the hyperbolic bilge people felt compelled to come out with post-Spurs.
And I will stand by my point that to complain pre-Norwich that we cannot grind out a 1-0 only to shift the goal posts post game that what we had seen was evidence that we're going to struggle is moronic. Norwich was what we haven't done anywhere near enough off.
Today was similar. We contained them, even if three centre halfs still cannot defend a set piece, and we actually bagged three without twin threats of Benteke and Gabby. The last two results or rather the manner we got to the results was what was not present in last season.
-
Visited my dad's grave in Witton cemetery on (what would have been) his birthday prior to kick -off.And the Gods shined on us. I'm one of those who thought we played quite well in the first half against an outstanding side but as for those 3 mad second half minutes and the mayhem that followed ... stunned and several stages beyond delighted.

No we were not outplayed for large parts of the game. Our best player WAS Bacuna. How many clear cut chances they had? They had an eye on CL...do me a favour.... You make it sound like as if it was a very lucky 1-0 win. Presumably you watched the game. They took the lead twice and we came back twice and then beat them.

Craven cowardice of the worst kind, not fucking worthy of the majesty of Aston Villa Football Club.
Overly negative and possibly melodramatic.
I was referring to those posters you were on about.

Each week we get posters predicting giant wins or catastrophic defeats, ignore them, I do.
Most games there is one goal in it, that's the reality.
-
Its all well and good saying we were outplayed, but what did Guzan do? I struggle to recall a meaningful save he made.
Kompany is a great centre half, hilarious defending for the third aside, but he has a short memory considering the handball from last season that effectively knocked us out of the game at their place.
Also, Nasri not only looks like a lesbian, but he is a snidey, whiney little shit house too.
-
I'm afraid to watch the highlights in case el Ahmadi is given offside. Wrong tactics, wrong team, right result. Bollocks to it all. We deserved it because we scored the better goals.
Back to 4-3-3 next week, three wins on the trot since I dunno when.
-
Sorry Legion, I misunderstood your post, I thought you were saying that I was overly negative etc.
-
We were out played for large parts of that game and Citeh should have been out of sight by half time, in fact our best player was the linesman.
However they did not put us away and they got stung for their complacency and you can bet some of them had at least one eye on the CL game this week.
To be honest i thought we were very poor 1st half and city should have had the game won , 2nd half we had a go and played much better - the result is the main thing and the manner of the victory showed guts to come from behind twice and win , we played much better at Chelsea and lost, so we deserve a bit of luck.
-
An away banker, it might only be 0-1 but City will win.
These days Man U, Man C, Liverpool, Arsenal and now Chelsea and even Spurs never have an off day at Villa Park, but sometimes do at places like Southampton and Norwich :-[
This was my quote for the pre-match thread - and I'm so glad I've been proved completely wrong, a massive well done to the boys!!
-

What would the right team and tactics have been then?

Can we now stop comparing us to when TSM was in charge.

Part of your body can be onside, but you can still be offside. It is where the most advanced part of your body which you can legally score with that matters.
Correct.
So can you knee be offside if you foot is behind it and kicks the ball into the net?
-
I have seen us from the third division to the glory days and the demise and the ups and downs since. Days like today are why we support this great club of ours. The image of Weiman in front of the best stand in English football is superb.
-
I think Lambert saw how Cardiff beat them, by sitting deep and keeping discipline and replicated it. Man City struggled to play through us because of how organised we were. Time and again they tried to draw Vlaar out to feed a midfield runner into the space and we denied them.
It wasn't always pretty, but it proved effective.

Yes.

City have no class.
They will win nowt because if you get at em, they dont like, moan at the ref and are worse as a result.
Great result today
-
The picture of Andi is surely the next front cover of H&V?! A fantastic image.
Joe Hart; he isn't very good is he?
-
That was a day and a victory well deserved - for all of us who left the ground on Tuesday evening and then returned , as we always do , 5 days later to support OUR team.
Yep - that's us - we're the villa.
-
Mind you I did post this was the eleventh premier game with this referee and amazingly we haven't lost.
Is that true? If so we need together the Committee on the phone to his agent now and book him for every game till the end of the season. You can't let talent like this slip through your hands.
-

I'd prefer Scott Carson.

Really looking forward to a night in front of the TV for MOTD!

And like England's number one in all other positions - hideously overrated.

Yes, according to Graham poll in his online daily mail column yesterday.....
Jones steps out for just his second top flight game of the season and has Aston Villa, who he has refereed in 10 Premier League games since he got onto the select group referees list. They are yet to lose.
That’s quite a sequence for a team who lose their fair share of games, and Jones was in charge when they lost narrowly at Arsenal in an FA Cup tie two years ago. Given that Jones also sent off City’s Samir Nasri and Gareth Barry in 2012 and you might fancy an unexpected home win – but not if City play like they did last weekend.

Exactly. We maintained our shape and restricted their efforts to long range pings
-
Their two goals were simply due to shit defending from corners. Our 3 were class.
Although Weimann's goal was a result of some of the worst defending of the day.
I loved Andi's celebration.
Love it.
We have players now who really want to play for us, each other and the manager. There is a great team spirit here, if we can just keep up the momentum to build confidence because this team definitely thrives off it, which in turn works the other way. They can play really good football at times.
-
I really thought Andi started celebrating too early and should have followed the ball into net....
-
I'm going to annoy a few people with this but I don't think the first half was too bad.
An excellent post.
-
Right - calmed down now.
Thought we had a more composed air first half even if we did not create much and City scored.
Has Lambert realised we are a second-half team at home and holds them on a leash 'til then? ;-)
City never seemed to step up the gears - they seemed happy to raid down the flanks and ping balls in - with no immediate effect.
They played at one pace, it was good passing and movement but they just kept doing the same thing.
Can we sign Yaya Toure (sp?) please - loved watching him take the ball over and over again, make the simple pass and then move to receive. Did we take the ball off him?
Lastly - the image of the ball rolling toward the goal is etched forever on my retina - it led to one of the great moments as it finally rolled over the line to unleash pandemonium all over the ground) laughing hysterically in jubilation.
Thanks for that Villa - you owed us ;-)
-
Exactly. I'll see anyone's KEA was offside and raise them a John Terry handball and Jan Vertonghen pulling down Helenius's shorts.
Well said. I want you on my legal team for the murder trial......
-
it must be a really special day for villa. no h&v idiot stating fuck off villa or i hate the villa. Never in 50 years at the villa have i ever met these feckers who so openly criticise my club unless they are wearing a blue and white scaft. lambert is class, most Villa fans know it, apart for the raincoats on here. Until next week...when again the village idiot (ive posted 500 times which makes me a real villa fan) classes us as utter shite.

Raincoats is way harsh.

There are plenty of other Villa-related message boards out there if either of you are not happy with this one.
-
The near post weakness should be addressed as a matter of urgency, to be sure.
Agreed - but I would stop shitting bubbles if we placed a man on the far post too
-
We were not "outplayed" by Citeh - they had loads of possession and did very little with it - their 2 goals came from set pieces. I can't remember Brad making more than 2 saves, while Hart was shit, as was their defence for much of the game - if big CB was in there I think they'd have s**t their pants. We got in their faces more in the 2nd half, which they didn't like - Toure kicking out at Kozak should've been booked at least, and the elbow on Kozak went unpunished (no idea who did that assault). They whinged, stroked the ball about while winning and panicked when losing.
We showed a lot of guts and guile today and I think it won us the game. I hope we do the same in the next 32 games!
Come on you Villa boys!
-
Just seen the goals again with Trevor doing the commentary.
Dear Mr Francis, if part of your body is level with the last man when the ball is played, you're not offside. Also, it doesn't matter a flying fcuk where you are when you actually receive the ball.
That's not right, surely?
Part of your body can be onside, but you can still be offside. It is where the most advanced part of your body which you can legally score with that matters.
I did not know that. I thought that they'd modified the rule to benefit the attacking side by saying that as long as you're level you're OK.
That's actually correct, if the most forward part of your body with which you can legally score is level, you are onside. It's the most forward advanced part of the body bit that is important, though, doesn't matter if both your feet are level, for example, and your head is further forward, that's offside.
you can score with your head, I think you mean arm
Why do I mean arm?
That's the point I am making - you can score with the head, if the head is ahead of the last man and the feet aren't, then you're offside.
-
We were not "outplayed" by Citeh - they had loads of possession and did very little with it - their 2 goals came from set pieces.
To be fair, the first half was one of the most one sided 45 minutes of football I have seen for ages - if we'd been the team dishing that out, we'd be telling everyone we outplayed the opposition.
-
The picture of Andi is surely the next front cover of H&V?! A fantastic image.
Joe Hart; he isn't very good is he?
He's a liability, for them and for England, and has been for a while, I reckon.
-

We were working so hard to keep them out first hard. Got to say we were outplayed. Some if the defending , I thought, was heroic stuff. That's why, for me, the second half turnaround was so magical. I couldn't see a way back at half time even at 0-1
-
By the way, IMHO Man City fans are easily the classiest when we beat them or when they beat us out of the expensive sides. Not much whining and usually a congratulations.
They're a pretty decent bunch compared to the rest of the "Super-six".
You mean since Gary Cook left, the repulsive bluenose c***

From someone who can only post and quote to someone who can put the clever all singing all dancing stuff on here, make my day paulie and express your point about the offside rule with moving cartoon salt and pepper pots complete with heads, arms and legs. ;)

I'm afraid I think you might need to check the rules there!

If they'd have scored 4 or 5 goals whilst "outplaying" us fair enough, but they didn't. The object of the game is to score goals, not keep the ball and not score goals. If the opposition want to tiptap it about all day to no effect, let them.
Mucho tactics, these days, are based on this premise aren't they? And then catch THEM on the break?
If we'd played as they did in the 1st half and not scored I'd think we were a bit shit at scoring, not "outplaying" anybody.
Depends on your interpretation of "outplaying"?
Agree to differ paulie.
-
Watched the game from the North Stand Lower for the very first time...fantastic atmosphere for fifteen minutes the place was rocking, rest of the game very strange...but who cares, a great win built upon team work and never say die and, for me, Lambert's best signing this summer....the versatile, committed and skilful Bacuna!
Baker: immense, Kozak: Worked his socks off, and getting ready for MOTD, when surely we will feature second, thanks to Abyun.
-
You are always going to concede a lot of possession to one of the top teams. You need to make sure they do as little damage as possible with that possession, which we did to an extent. You need a bit of luck here and there, which we had. And you need to take your chances and/or come up with something special up front. We scored three goals.
-

Sort of my point about being "outplayed" but in a different way.
And you put it much better than I ever could Damo, especially after 5 pints of Craddock's and no food!
UTV!

People can say what they like on here as long as it's not personal. You get a wide spectrum of views which is the whole point. Just saying, if I was voting for my least favourite it would be the "we are going to lose 0-7 because we are shit" ones
-
Also, Nasri not only looks like a lesbian, but he is a snidey, whiney little shit house too.

They look different in real life to the ones on the internet. So I'm told.
-
Couple of questions for those who went:
Who played in the middle of the back three? I'd assumed Clark but it looks like it was baker?
Who did the same in midfield? I'd assumed KEA or mate sylla, with Delph the left of the three. But again it looks like it was Delph?
-
Clark left, Baker central, Vlaar right.
-
btw, I thought Vlaar was "immense" today!
Best performance for us as a leader.
-
The North Lower near the away fans went a bit mental after every goal, I noticed.
-
Also, Nasri not only looks like a lesbian, but he is a snidey, whiney little shit house too.
Ads, what does a lesbian look like?
The only two lesbians I know both look like Zamo of Grange Hill and there a couple.
-
Well done lads.
We werent the better side but then we knew that before the kick off.
In a David V's Goliath contest it's only the result that matters.
Now please, take confidence from this and push on.
-
I don't think John Motson was at Villa Park today. They obviously do a "dub-on" commentary after results are known.
-
I love Roberto...very positive about us
-
Watched it on Motd just now. That moment when Weimann realises it's going in so changes his run to the Holte instead of to the line was brilliant!
-
Everytime they replayed the goal, a part lf me kept thinking that the centre half would clear it.
-
I like Roberto too. I always wanted him here and was gutted we didn't get him after MON ran off. Saying that I can't complain about Lambert.
-
The North Lower near the away fans went a bit mental after every goal, I noticed.
They always do.
I love the North (Witton End) Lower!
They give the oppo fans some stick - keep it up guys!
-
Its a pity the North stand isn't the other way round, as a bigger lower tier would really add to the atmosphere.
-
Great result. Lets hope it's the start of something (at home). Stick to the formation maybe? I'd imagine it gives us more solidity at the back and certainly suits players like Bacuna, Luna and Wiemann.
-
I love Roberto...very positive about us
He was...nice to hear a compliment from time to time.
And...hate to go on about it ... he agrees with my version of being "outplayed" - if you have lots of possession and do f**k all with it, it' ain't being outplayed! (I think?)
Come on you Lions!
-

Certainly feel Luna and Bacuna (Lowton and Bennett as well) are more suited to the wing back role.
-
Tonight, I am just so god damn proud of this club - f**k those that spend crazy money, we'll get it done the old fashioned way. Lerner and Lambert deserve MASSIVE praise for the way they are going about their business. And the negativity that remains - dear oh dear. We will lose many but win more and then we strengthen again in the summer (even if Benteke leaves, we'll have a pot of money to re-invest). Good times ahead
-
Agree Witton
Didnt think the ball was gonna make it over the line for Andi's winner. It seemed to speed up just before it crossed the line.
Still dont know how we won. Great day. As i said to my son, enjoy it, we could lose 3 nil nextweek!
-
Well I didn't see that coming at all. Fanastic result well done lads. :)
I did. I went to bed last night before the match and dreamed we won 3-2. Quite an amazing result. Haven't seen the goals yet, but going to go and have a look now.
-
I really do think that the Holte end sucked it in for Andi's winner
-
Marvellous.
Three on the bounce against Hello Kitty Tigers next please.

You gotta accept that 100m team will out pass you. I think of gab was their today we would have more than 3 I was happy at half time and didn't sense too much dissent in north stand upper. I enjoyed it all not quite up their with Sunderland but I sense more happy days at vp to come. Vtid
-
Visited my dad's grave in Witton cemetery on (what would have been) his birthday prior to kick -off.And the Gods shined on us. I'm one of those who thought we played quite well in the first half against an outstanding side but as for those 3 mad second half minutes and the mayhem that followed ... stunned and several stages beyond delighted.
I don't think that we've ever had as much of an emotional outpouring in the LTR as we did today at the end of the game. Hearty handshake all round.
-
Fucking get the fucking fuck in. I am pissed. That is all
-
Fantastic 2nd half, just fantastic!
Well they knew they had to win it as it was your birthday.
-
Ooh. And Guza just grabbed that.
-
Fucking get the fucking fuck in. I am pissed. That is all
You have a fine way with words sir. Its no wonder that they put you on the tele.
-
Great win. Other than the two sloppy goals we gave away, I thought we defended really well. And I think Lambert might have pulled another one out the hat in Bacuna, he was excellent.
-
When Weimann slipped the ball past Hart, I had time to think: "It doesn't have enough pace, its going to be cleared before the line...". Time slowed to a crawl. Then Holte End just "sucked" it in...
Crazy...
Then at 4 min into overtime they get that corner... "Not this again, Please God not this again!". Camera went to PL and some similar thought is written all over his face.
Then the relief after the header is wide...
Bacuna for me was the MoM, not just for the goal. He is improving with every game. Amazing workrate. Sylla, Vlaar also good.
Delph was ok but not as creative as we have come to expect. KEA was ok. Baker not so much. Conceded alot of the corners and seems to be easily stressed into mistakes and poor passing.
Luna improved alot from his precious performances. Bowry for me is an enigma. He keeps getting subs and a cup game here and there but I never ever seen him do anything.
What is he supposed to be good at? He is not pacey, thats obvious but what CAN he do? Can he shoot? Good in the air? What!? When Delph was in the same situation he still had moments of promise. I honestly cant see that in Bowry. Nevermind, it didnt cost us anything today.
After the final whistle the joy of Villa players celebrating in a way that shows that it not just any 3 points.
Its the momentous impact of feeling what a BIG win home at Villa Park feels like...
-
Slightly annoyed I went to the Spurs game but couldn't make this one as well. But mostly I just love this football club. UP THE VILLA!
The Weimann goal reminded me of that Phil Neville OG a while back, equally amazing how the Holte sucks those in sometimes.
-
all the goals
-
I have no idea what kind of team this villa are any more. Our worst performer first half ends up being MOM, we looked poorer than a relegated Wigan of last season and then produce a batteling 2nd half that would suggest we could win the league wiith a few top class players.
It's torture being a Villa fan these days. The sort of torture that only Villa can put you through. I'm delighted and exhausted and mildly pissed, it helps.
-
When you think of the players out injured, that really was a superb result. Lambert does seem to have the knack of finding these players like Bacuna, long may he reign
-
Can we now stop comparing us to when TSM was in charge.
Arseholes post things like that knowing that load of others will jump on the bandwagon. One prick tried it at Lambert's first sports forum with us and was put in his place.
It is pathetic.
-
We contained them in the first half without doing much ourselves but then got stuck in in the second half. Great stuff Villa! Big credit to Delph and Bacuna. Bowery also did his part when he came on. A win without Benteke and Agbonlahor will help confidence across the squad.
-
How did Big Dutch Ron get on? I really really want him to be good but im not convinced he actually is.
-
Has there been a goal like Weimann's since Andy Lochhead against Shrewsbury in 71-72? Keeper kicks it, forward sinks it.

It's funny but that was the goal I was thinking of, this evening, as well!

Had a superb game it seems, I wasnt there

Dean Saunders vs Middlesbrough and QPR 1992-93 season both come to mind, both from long goal kicks, the QPR goal flicked on by Dalian.

How did Big Dutch Ron get on? I really really want him to be good but im not convinced he actually is.
Had a superb game it seems, I wasnt there
He played well and we were pleased to see him spending so much time chatting to some young fans over an hour after the game. Everyone else had gone but he took the time to do it. He looks really happy to be at the club and that will do for me.

Vlaar was excellent, held his position better, which has been his weakness. Clark was excellent again as well (I think Clark has been our best defender this season) and Baker was only a touch behind them both ( I think he could've done better for their 2nd and he gave away a few corners needlessly).

That is good to know. The team spirit seems excellent and that is great to see. He seems happy at the club and lets hope he continues to improve.

Has there been a goal like Weimann's since Andy Lochhead against Shrewsbury in 71-72? Keeper kicks it, forward sinks it.
Dean Saunders vs Middlesbrough and QPR 1992-93 season both come to mind, both from long goal kicks, the QPR goal flicked on by Dalian.
Julian Joachim vs Derby County 1996 (?), Oakes goal kick and flicked on by Tommy Johnson for JJ to score.
David Platt attacking the North scored one. Keeper kicks it, Platt beats non existent defence and scores
-
Thinking about it, Tony Daley on the volley vs Man City in 1991 was from a goal kick.

Did Gabby score one against Everton or Charlton from a Carson kick? I remember him bringing the ball down superbly and slotting it in.

Offside?
I thought we'd done well in the first half, we all expected them to overwhelm us, but that didn't
happen and until their goal, I was reasonably confident about the second half.
A measure of how well we played/coped is that no-one booed the players at half-time and considering
our home form over the last few seasons, that says something.
The second half and result made me nostalgic for the days when you could wait for the Argus to arrive
at the local newagents after the game.
-
The Argus or "the pink un" as my grandad used to say, landed about 610pm by us. We'd always be allowed some crisps and a chocolate bar too for Saturday night and if villa had won we were allowed to stay up late to watch Motd with old chinny .
-
We used to go up to Green Lane in Chelmsley and get the argus, Villa, Blues and Baggies and loved it, such a shame it has stopped
-
Sheffield had/has ? The green un . Argus but green paper.
-
may I add, for those not watching on dodgy streams, If you doubt for a second Trevor Francis is a complete and utter t##t, don't. I have never shouted so many profanities at a laptop in all my days
26 pages. No thanks. ;D. mattjpa, you are spot on. I watched it in the local on Al Jaz. Trevor bloody Francis was so anti Villa, even when we got the third goal. He is a blue nosed tosspot. All i can say is well done to the lads, on and off the pitch. The noise at VP yesterday was coming through the tv speakers good and proper. Well done to everybody at VP yesterday, fantastic, just fantastic. All you lot who voted Man City win can really eat my shorts. UTV.
-
Great result. Poor 1st half but we really took the game to them in the 2nd, and that's all us fans want to see really.
Special mention to Trevor Francis who was clearly devastated at the result. Once a Sty dweller always a Sty dweller.

I seem to remember Agbonlahor getting a goal like that a few years ago.

Get lost David white

A win without Benteke and Agbonlahor will help confidence across the squad.
No Westwood either, and to think people were moaning because him and Gabby didn't play on Tuesday because they were carrying knocks

Watching it roll towards the line reminded me of dalians at Wembley against utd and brought about the same reaction - a great moment :)
-
It reminded me of andy Lochead at Wembley against the Spurs....only that one didnt go in...still hurts

Not sure Westwood will get back in if kea performs like that - who would have thought a month ago that Lowton and Westwood would be struggling to get into the side - the more competition for places the better for us.

The same KEA who you reckon last season wasn't good enough eh Easts? Like I've always said, with some foreign players you need to give them time to adjust to the pace of the game over here. Kozak's already said that it's so different to what he was used to over in Italy.
-
I had to watch it on 2Premier channel on Norwegian TV. Trevor Morley gave us a right pasting at half time....Changed his tune on the norwegian equivalent of MOTD. we wern't first on over here either.
they always have a ex-brit player on as pundit, last week it was Merse, and today it's Mighty perm, saviour of the barcodes Keegan

If lambert thought he was good enough last season he would have been in the team so -
Yes the same kea who I and many others reckon wasnt good enough last season , he was dropped by lambert and deservedly so but this season he has come back looking fitter and stronger and I'm delighted to see it .

I bet that was a treat for you VFL being allowed to go as far as Green Lane? Argus always arrived at 5.50 in Nechells, benefit of being close to city centre!
-
I thought as a keeper yesterday Guzan looked head and shoulders above hart :)
Yes he did confident and dominate but what the hell happened to his kicking in the second half?
-
Forgot to mention, shout out to the 8 year old girl (season ticket holder) and only Villa fan in the class I teach. She accurately predicted both the 1-0 against Norwich and 3-2 against city (as well as having a more measured reaction to the mid-week result than many on here).

Impossible game to analyse. The reactionary one game at a time extremism from some has annoyed me, so nice to shut some of those up with a win yesterday.
Did anyone else notice that in the build up to the award of the free kick for our second equaliser Albrighton was stripped and ready to come on?
I imagine that was going to lead to a change of formation with one of the centre backs coming off. As soon as Leo scored, he was told to sit back down and we kept the same shape.
Amazing how certain little moments change an entire outcome. Brilliant day

I thought he had a really commanding, all-round, captain's game today - best I've seen him play for us.

Yes he is looking more solid this season , as a friend of mine says sometimes you need to give a foreign player time to settle ;)
I was impressed with him alongside okore but he also looks decent now alongside Clark or baker .

Doncha just love the game of football. Against Newcastle we were gutless and without pride. Yesterday that game was won on pure guts and pride. I am immensely proud of them and of the fans.
Apologies if it has been raised before but who did KEA choose to celebrate his goal with? I have never seen that happen before, a player gets a vital goal in front of the Holte, ignores the fans and avoids the congratulations of his team mates and runs to the dugout to hug a person I could not recognize from where we sit.

Matt lowtons arms were wrapped around him tight on the touchline , not sure if that's who he ran to or whether Lowton just got to him first - was lovely to see though.

Think it was Lowton, but perhaps he just wanted to share it with the bench.
I love watching Luna when we score - he f**in' loves it!

The little moments certainly do change things - we were screaming for some movement (no change there) and AndyW accelerated into space and then drew the free kick. On little moment of movement changed it.
Andy was also getting very frustrated down the right when we were slow coming out a couple of times - was screaming for back-up - so very happy he had some effect on the game after he has looked short on confidence. Great ovation when he was subbed.
The last 15 minutes were the loudest I can remember for a while despite the tension.

Thanks eastie. I try to be honest in every way and I must say up to that point I thought KEA (or as Motty calls him Kareem Al Athmadi) had been clueless. What a difference a goal makes. As though MOTD this morning was not exquisite enough the interviews proved that Andi is speaking English with a Brummie accent. I am told that Peaky Blinders is already in the planning stage of its third series which has moved forward to war time Brum. Andi should get a walk on part as a German spy embedded in the BSA.

the match thread from about page 12/13 is the best ever, when you read it with hindsight its match thread gold, absolute classic
Montbert every now and then tries to say something optimistic only to be deluged in a sea of utter shitness from everyone else
i'm not having a go at anyone,
I watched the first half and thought we were as bad a I've seen under Lambert, and I will hold my hands up and say as a leading happy clapper I started to doubt,
so I closed the laptop and took the kids swimming
move to family size changing cubicle at municipal swimming pool -
I take a look at the mobile to see how many we lost by,
keep my hand over the first part of the score and it appears ASTON VILLA 3, fuckinada,
how many did they get, reveal- MAN CITY 2
cue ridiculous naked jumping up and down and delirious shouting and acting like a total loon,
kids looking at me in a non plussed embarrassed sort of way,
other bathers wondering shouting 'is everthing alright over there'
to right they are matey, we just did a Dyanmo the magician act on Man City, and we still don't know how we did it

We'd christened El Ahmadi "Rimmer" after the first half, as he had all the presence of a hologram in midfield.
-
That is much to subtle and funny for me to respond that he was not that bad a keeper. Could not kick straight but otherwise sound. The Gordon Brittas joke is much better.
-
Great result. Lets hope it's the start of something (at home). Stick to the formation maybe? I'd imagine it gives us more solidity at the back and certainly suits players like Bacuna, Luna and Wiemann.
I said this yesterday. It might work even better with Benteke and Gabby as the front two, although it would be a little harsh on Weimann.
-
Just back to Manchester a short while ago.
My ratings
Guzan 4 - threw in the first goal, rooted to his line for the second and his efforts with the ball at his feet left a lot to be desired.
Bacuna 6 - like many others very poor in the first half but a beautiful free kick. Aside from set pieces looks a limited player to me. Good to have someone who can take a decent set piece though.
Vlaar 6 - not too bad defensively and playing with three centre backs only highlights the lack of their collective ability on the ball. Solid though.
Baker 5 - very poor for the second goal and just the standard running around like a bull in a china shop. Hate the way he doesn't even attempt to block shots with his right foot. Sliding across on his left every time is asking for own goals.
Clark 6 - bit like Vlaar was solid defensively but offered nothing with the ball. Seems to be improving to be fair.
Luna 5 - thought he was atrocious up to the point Navas came on. Improved hugely thereafter. Think Bennett will get chances to get back in.
Sylla 4 - gave the ball away continuously and has a first touch that is up there with Holman's in its ineptitude. Shocking I thought and surely was going to be replaced before Bacuna scored.
El Ahmadi 6 -couldn't get near City in the first half but did improve after the break. A very average player though on all evidence to date in a Villa shirt.
Delph 7 - was disappointed with him in the first half as he should be better than the dross we were playing. Improved hugely after the interval, getting on the ball and creating things.
Weimann 5 - won the free kick and scored. He hardly got a kick in the first half and there seemed to be no understanding at all between our front two. Goal should be a big boost to him.
Kozak 5 - thought he was one of our better players in the first half but his lack of mobility is a real issue without Gabby in the side. Was blowing out his arse long before the end and should have been replaced I thought.
Bowery 6 - don't rate this lad in the slightest but he gave a decent account of himself when he came on.
I think I might have seen a different game to most on here but sure winning is all that matters
-
A lot of people around me were having a go at Andi for not having the pace as Kozak kept winning the balls and in their eyes he was not as good a Gabby to latch onto to them.
-
I have only bet on us twice this season, and both of those were for us to win against arsenal and man city. I simply could not resist 8/1 and 6/1 respectively. I think I may bet more often 😉
I await the next time we are ridiculously priced, although I didn't disagree lol
Where do we send you the money?
It will have to be in cash, in this current (and seemingly forever) economic climate, as I don't trust cheques. In £50 notes would look good. Actually do they still exist?
-

The good thing is we have a variation in our play and can adapt the formation as and when needed , I have no doubt he will continue away with the 433 but the fact we can change things at home is no bad thing - we need to adapt our tactics and shake it up a bit if things aren't going well .
It's all good for the future, I agree with other posters that bacuna and luna are more effective as kind of wing backs than last season although I do feel sorry for Lowton .

6-7 is considered average so you think we won at home against the most expensively assembled side ever and we had 1 player who was marginally above average and everyone else was poor... really?
The defenders pretty much restricted them to set pieces and pot shots from distance (as 7 shots on target from 21 attempts confirms) so all of them deserve 7s at least, for example.
-
Hard to provide rankings really from yesterday - it was the proverbial game of 2 halves and I doubt many at half time could have foreseen we would score 3 and win - a truly memorable 45 mins which reminded me of that arsenal 3-2 all those years ago.
We showed balls, character and guts and got rewarded for it - quite delightful :)
-
Still have a sore throat and don't care!

I think some of us old buggers used to refer to it as "the pink 'un" because it's rival was "The Blue Mail", which was never a patch on the Argus.

I still have my copy from the day we won the league in amongst my keepsakes with programmes from various finals, Barcelona etc. Though I was in London for the day obviously, an old dearly departed friend of mine, Alan Fisher, used to send it me every week whilst I was at uni. Folded up into a roll with one of those address sleeves round it like they used to send newspapers through the post in olden days!

I still have my copy from the day we won the league in amongst my keepsakes with programmes from various finals, Barcelona etc. Though I was in London for the day obviously, an old dearly departed friend of mine, Alan Fisher, used to send it me every week whilst I was uni. Folded up into a roll with one of those address sleeves round it like they used to send newspapers through the post in olden days!
Still got my copy too in a battered old suitcase along with various old tickets and European memorabilia - not looked at them in years but they are precious to me.

I loved the Argus, those were the days when on occasions you bought it not knowing the Villa score.
-
Every week you never knew if Villa would be the main double spread in the centre or if it was going to be Albion, Blues, depending on that particular issue. Used to have the fixtures/stats box which they'd fill in with attendences and scorers as the season progressed. When we moved down south my nan would send me copies through the post.

Radio 5 final score
good old days.

These old memories are making me pine for the old shoot magazine league ladders , i used to love them , and also roy of the rovers magazine , great memories.

Ooh fuck my head! Had a right skinful last night. Think someone must've spiked my ale with LSD or something 'cos I had this really vivid dream that we actually did Citeh 3-2. Better get ready for the game..... hang on, why does the clock say "Sunday 29 September" and where did this copy of the latest Heroes and Villains come from? :D
Fantastic result. Delph MOM for me with El Ahmadi and Bacuna a very close second. I thought we gave them too much respect at the beginning of the first half. Second half was crazy and the Wimbledon-esque winner from Andi was both hilarious and wonderful at the same time. Best moment for me tho' was seeing 5' fuck-all Delph beat 8' man-mountain Ya-Ya Toure in the air.
What a contrast coming out of Villa Park was compared to the Newcastle game.

Jesus you are hard to please. Had to stop reading after your "like many others very poor" comment. I do not really understand how people describe our first half performance as poor. Just remember who we were playing... man fuckin city. Top top world class players seasoned professionals major winners. Yes they had the ball but other than 3 long shots from Nasri, Toure and Milner how many times did they rip us apart?

Was there any other way? I knew the only way was to queue up at the shop look towards the direction of City centre wait for the Evening Mail van. Some didn't stop and than one did. You tried to catch a glimpse of the scores in the bundle as the driver rushed it into the counter....yes those were the days!

I think we defended quite well 1st half, but there wasn't much else to shout about. The midfield and up front offered nothing. 2nd half was totally different though, we really had a go and were rewarded for it.
-

No mate I will never get over that but you do get hurt by those you love and than you remember why you love em! I always want the best available Villa team to take the field and compete and that they did yesterday.

I still really miss the Argus. Another reason to dislike Sky.

Agreed. The ratings are a bit harsh, especially for Guzan, whose excellent awareness led to the pass to Andi which enabled him to score the winning goal.

I agree, we looked a different side 2nd half - it seems to often be the case that we don't start playing well until we go behind , we have come from behind on a few occasions already this season and taken 6 points from losing positions.
We haven't lost a lead as yet this season either .
-
Have you stopped to think that putting the team out that we did on Tuesday enabled us to play like that yesterday?
Yes I have thought about that and may be that was a factor however I am hurt that we are out of cup and it will hurt till the FA cup comes around and we make some progress there.

cue ridiculous naked jumping up and down and delirious shouting and acting like a total loon,
kids looking at me in a non plussed embarrassed sort of way,
other bathers wondering shouting 'is everthing alright over there'
to right they are matey, we just did a Dyanmo the magician act on Man City, and we still don't know how we did it
That is so funny and so true.
Football is great sometimes.
How's the hangover Mr Green?
I feel absolutely brilliant. No idea how that works.
-
Just back to Manchester a short while ago.

Totally wrong giving Sylla only a 4. He does a lot of tracking back/covering with some vital interceptions. Giives a physical presence in the middle. Admit he gave away possession at times but also some neat passing; don't forget it's his first 'proper' start this season, and as mentioned elsewhere, he's not fully up to speed yet in this campaign. I remember that last home game against Chelsea last season where he won the man-of-the match award and I thought then he's got huge potential. Just hope Lambo keeps him in the side. How do you accommodate Westwood now?

The North Lower near the away fans went a bit mental after every goal, I noticed.
They always do.
I love the North (Witton End) Lower!
They give the oppo fans some stick - keep it up guys!
When that prat, who ran on, got taken out, they had to take him right through that snarling mob. Great to watch!
-
Thanks eastie.
We'd christened El Ahmadi "Rimmer" after the first half, as he had all the presence of a hologram in midfield.
He does the right things in terms of hassling and hounding, but needs to do more upper body work, as he gets shrugged off as if he wasn't there most the time and ends up just tugging at another player's arm.
Nice finish for his goal, and it seemed to me he deliberately ran straight to Matt Lowton to celebrate.
Liked Bacuna hugging PL when he scored too!
-
Running over to the bench to celebrate is a good sign imo, team spirit right there.
-
Hull next week. Anyone remember the last time we won 3 on the trot in the league?
-
The icing on top of the icing on top of the icing on yesterday's cake was as I walked down the steps after the game a young boy aged about seven walked straight up to me without warning, stared me straight in the eyes from about my waist height and said "We were great today" and walked off to join whoever he was with. I suspect he was not with anybody. I suspect he was God.
-
If I was God I wouldn't bother with being omnipresent at 3pm on Saturdays. I would go down the Villa.
-
Hull next week. Anyone remember the last time we won 3 on the trot in the league?
Will be a tough game , they have started well and Bruce will have them fired up for it , but I agree its a game that is very winnable and would set us up nicely for the break.
I am flying off to menorca next Monday so will be delighted if we are in the top 8 or higher when I arrive there .
-
Vlaar was excellent yesterday and that is really pleasing.

Sounds more like the son of God.
(Although the only confirmed sighting of Jesus yesterday was the one Luna had in his pocket)
-
Lovely day today isn't it?
-
Just re-watching football first, I think Trevor Francis' pathetic commentary is summed up after he's desperate for the Weimann-won freekick to have been incorrectly awarded when he says "Vlaar has got, one shot on him, I think he'll take this on". Cue Bacuna absolutely bending it beautifully right into the top corner!
-
Lovely day today isn't it?
Yep, agree. If you want even more entertainment go on Man City's Blue Moon Fans Forum Post-Match Thread. Great comments on there.....Milner is shit according to them, Championship player at best! Hopefully we can do some sort of deal in January as I think Pellegrini will bomb him out.
-
its better than that, its wonderful. I live about 15 miles from Hull and at my sons Rugby practice there was some lovely chat between me and the other Dads. They are all Hull fans. There view is they were expecting the match to be a must win, but after their recent exploits its more it would to be good to get something out of the game.

Now that would be good .
-
I'm still enjoying the win I had a great day out at yesterday's match let's hope we can continue with this form roll on Hull.
-
I think the fact that it was such a turnaround makes it more pleasing , at half time there no way I could have seen us scoring 3 times and it was as unexpected as it was delightful - one of those games that will long be remembered.
-
Typical. Had to sit through Hearts v Dundee United (0-0) whilst we actually win a game at home.
Wifi coverage was shit in the ground, so only found the result out after. Thought it was an optical illusion on the screens at first, that maybe I hadn't entered the Tynecastle boozer by the ground at all, but instead some hazy Amsterdam Jazz Cafe. That or the Fourth Dimension.
From the bit I could see later in the evening, it looks like we were fortunate (that could just be the BBC's typically skewed coverage, mind). But Lady Luck has been sticking two fingers up to us for at least the past two seasons, so it's nice to get one in our favour for a change.
-
Monday will be an even better day. I wonder if there is a drama coach who works on a Sunday I can hire? I really want to hone the insults I intend to hurl at all those Mancs of both colours who are as numerous as the nits in Savage's hair in the places I work.
Who have the Villa got in the next round of the cup? was what I had to endure all last Wednesday. Tomorrow is pay back

Just had a look. Very amusing.
City fans whined
An absolute joke to lose to relegation fodder again.. it's quite clear to me that the change of manager is not working. We've ballsed up good style appointing Pellers.. total disaster, he'll be gone by Christmas
Pellegrini can fuck off if this continues
Can't kill off teams away from home. 1 point from fucking 9, unacceptable. Pellegrini had better turn this around ASAP
Booked seats for the UCL game v Bayern and now I am dreading it...
What a disaster, terrible, game, we should not loose to this shit in this style, no chance for the title this year, i think the falcon has to big an eye on Europe, i would take 3rd now
As for all the comments about being robbed, how about the mugging we got from the officials at The Etihad last season?

I am still basking in the glory of yesterday's result, it makes the rest of the weekend so brilliant, these feelings haven't come along too many times in recent seasons which makes them extra special.

The joys of football - a week ago they were ecstatic as they pissed all over united , that's what makes it such a great game , you never can tell what will happen next .

I agree. After last season, weekends like these seem like heaven. It's great to see everyone on here in a good mood too, joshing with each other in a much more light hearted fashion and taking more of an interest in football in general - something that only a Villa winning weekend makes me want to do
-
Yes, it was the way the BBC skewed it Kevin. Our lads fought like bastards for every bit of luck they got. That was as classic a fight back as you would ever want to see fuelled by guts, heart and pride.

Man City fans referring to Villa as "shite" and "relegation fodder"... They've had years and years of getting to know both terms intimately and - regardless of the oil money behind them - they'll always remain "shite" in my eyes. (And "relegation fodder", come to think of it.) You can't polish the proverbial turd, Bluemooners.

You'd have thought that fans of a club that were a perennial joke and relegation fodder a few years ago and who have done nothing more than win the 'five year lottery' (chavski being the last winners) would be more humble. But then again, they are the same types who probably think Manchester is on a par with London and Paris and we're all gagging to live there

Is that a no thanks to resigning Milner, who is a dramatically better midfielder than any we currently have (Delph may be close to him if he can continue to improve) or is it no to looking on Blue Moon?
-
If anyone had tried to tell me at half time yesterday that we'd score 3 in the second period I'd have had them arrested. We'd been disciplined and hard working but I though conceding such a soft goal right at the end would mean us opening up and getting picked off.
Instead a side missing four or five regulars gave me my best afternoon at the football in years. Afterwards, walking back to the pub I kept catching snippets of conversation as we passed people, all extolling the virtues of players we hadn't even heard of 6 months ago.
-
I thought Milner was awful yesterday.
-
There was something about being humble losers that didn't quite fit the manc mentality. Now that Man City are flush with oil money and mercenaries, having smoke blown up their arses by the media, they look much more comfortable as gobby, self-aggrandising losers instead.
-
I thought Milner was awful yesterday.
I'd take him back in a heartbeat.
A midfield trio of Milner, Delph and Sylla would be a vast improvement
-
We need to build on this now.
A Scouser who was in the pub up here yesterday was laughing to his mates "City losing to Villa?! ha ha!"
We need to get back to a point where results like that aren't actually such a shock. Not saying we should be competing with Citeh and co for the CL spots, that's unrealistic with our financial approach.
But even through fairly mediocre years under the likes of Gregory, O'Leary and co, VP was always a difficult enough place to come for most opposing sides (United excepted). We didn't win many against Liverpool either, true. But Benitez and most other managers of the top 4/top 6 were happy enough to settle for a point, and often sent their teams out with that approach. Nobody really came to our patch expecting to turn us over.
-

They won't be selling him any time soon, he's too versatile and they'll need to rotate as the season progresses but even if they did his wages put him well beyond our reach.
-
There was a lot of goodwill in the world of football towards Man City from the years they have endured sharing a city with a truly horrible football club and also for always being the comedy act of the Football League. However that goodwill is fast evaporating as the Manc mentality takes hold and they see themselves as the Cockneys of the North only Better and they fast become as detestable as their red neighbours.
-
We used to go up to Green Lane in Chelmsley and get the argus, Villa, Blues and Baggies and loved it, such a shame it has stopped
I bet that was a treat for you VFL being allowed to go as far as Green Lane? Argus always arrived at 5.50 in Nechells, benefit of being close to city centre!
Certainly was mate, always there for 6.10 after getting back from the game, what a great paper it was
-
I dont get the comment re city fans , I have friends who support them and they not really changed . They are v different to the red brummies

People who 10 years ago would laugh at city's plight and now walk around in sky blue like they are lord of the manor.

and the players and written them off
Keeping the faith and travelling to Hull next weekend believing it will be 3 wins on the bounce

True , but I'm sure its a cross I could bear if it meant we were successful at that level :)

To be fair to Citeh fans they seem ok. I did notice many of them were wearing old tops pre dating the Etihad stuff to make them look not so gloryhunterish.
-
I'd love to see that picture Ian Bell took of the Ashes urn with the Holte End in the background, is he a twittererererer? And fair play to him for all the pics he had taken and hands he shook, the steward had to ask him and Woakes to leave the pitch because the players were out for the second half.
I can remember when Man City fans sang all the time not just when they were winning as they did yesterday. A sure sign that they're forgetting where they were when they were shit.

My headache from the post match pints in The Bartons is starting to subside but I'm still in shock that we got that result yesterday.
I shall go to work tomorrow with a spring in my step.
-
We need to build on this now.
I'd be pointing out we ripped them a new one at dole HQ last season

That is quality.

To be fair to Citeh fans they seem ok. I did notice many of them were wearing old tops pre dating the Etihad stuff to make them look not so gloryhunterish.
I've seen a guy riding a bike along the Digbeth Branch Canal a few times, always wearing an old Man City shirt. I'd probably wear more of my older ones if we suddenly became fashionable as well, mind.

Absolutely superb - going on the wall at work !!!

I'm afraid to watch the highlights in case el Ahmadi is given offside. Wrong tactics, wrong team, right result. Bollocks to it all. We deserved it because we scored the better goals.
Back to 4-3-3 next week, three wins on the trot since I dunno when.
What would the right team and tactics have been then?
Man City is probably one of he worst teams to play three at the back against. They have good players on the flanks that will pin back your wing backs and just Dzeko through the middle occupying three centre backs. We effectively played a lot of the game with 10 men.
If we wanted to be hard to beat we could have played 4-4-2, the old two solid banks of 4, or stuck with our usual 4-3-3.
-
Just watched the highlights as I was out yesterday, what a joy to watch it was.

They didn't have just Dzeko though, Negredo was playing up the middle too, although you'd be excused for not noticing as he got nothing out of our back three.
He got it right, for me it was El Ahmadi killing us in the first half with his shadow play. Thankfully he put it right a bit in the second half, but he's a weak link for me.
I think with our forwards we didn't even really need a number 10 type player, just another Sylla type to eat ground and be tidy. Delph can then work his magic further up.

Going by the definition given earlier on in this post match discussion KEA was onside the way I see it. The part of him that was level with the last defender was the foot he used to score the goal. Therefore under current rules that makes him onside by my estimation.

Nope, if any part of your body that you can score from is offside, you're offside. Doesn't matter if you use that sort or not. I'm nit complaining, but that's the rule.

Only last year (Arsenal 3-2, Jan '12 wasn't it?). But unbeaten in 12 or something, now.

As it turned out we were, yes. I wouldn't fancy us repeating the trick though. Maybe like at Anfield last year it was the surprise that worked to our advantage. Whatever City were setting themselves up for during the week, it probably wasn't us playing three at the back.

We looked pretty solid in the the first half at home to Spurs last season with the 3 at the back, then Baker got injured. The big difference to Sat is that we have 3 genuine defenders fit to play there, at times we had Lowton and Herd in that back 3 with Clark, which is not ideal at all.
I still like the formation for certain games, Martinez has proved it can work in some games. It certainly helps the midfield and the back 4, and Luna/ Bacuna are ideal for the wing back roles.

Wouldn't be surprised if we play similar formation at home to spurs .

Three at the back is a big part of how Napoli have built one of the best counter-attacking sides in the world. Granted, it ended up a total disaster for us last season, but if we use it sparingly and correctly it still has some merit as a system in some games. The big difference here as opposed to last season was the genuine midfield three, as opposed to Bannan and Westwood looking lost.

You're obviously correct about the midfield, Sylla in particular being a big presence in there, but I'd also argue Bacuna and Luna are upgrades at wing back over Bennett and Luna, and Vlaar is certainly a better centre half than Herd.
-
Just watched the whole game on Man City TV. Although they had a load of possession in the first half they didn't actually create a great deal of chances (mostly half chances) apart from the goal. That I believe was down to our last gasp defending. I think we defended really well throughout the game (apart from a couple of corners) and once we scored the first goal you could see the self belief and determination of our players rise. A great win.
-
I don't think John Motson was at Villa Park today. They obviously do a "dub-on" commentary after results are known.

I think all of them are an upgrade, though Westwood certainly has a lot to offer coming back. The trio who played on the weekend never stopped harassing and chasing, though, and that's what Westwood's going to have to do to come back, whichever formation we're playing.
I certainly think Luna's an upgrade. However, Lowton can play as well as Bacuna did on Saturday (minus the freekick), he's just not been in good form before the injury. And that's a big difference with this season - a squad with options.
-
Impossible game to analyse.
Brilliant day
Both Albrighton and Tonev was to come on - for KEA and Weimann!
-
Also no yellow card for Delph!

Shortly after we got first equaliser did anyone notice a man city hand ball in the box from a deep cross? I recall two city defenders and one villa player challenged for the cross and it seemed to hit a raised arm.

Yes, I thought it was just my memory. Defender jumped and put the ball out for a throw with his hand rather than his head. Clear penalty, at least from the lower Holte.
I'm also amazed that Nasri wasnt booked at half time for having a pop at the ref and linesman.

Nope, if any part of your body that you can score from is offside, you're offside. Doesn't matter if you use that sort or not. I'm nit complaining, but that's the rule.
FIFA interpretation of Law 11:
Definitions
In the context of Law 11 – Offside, the following definitions apply:
• “nearer to his opponents’ goal line” means that any part of a player’s head, body or feet is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. The arms are not included in this definition
• “interfering with play” means playing or touching the ball passed or touched by a team-mate
• “interfering with an opponent” means preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s
line of vision or movements or making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent
• “gaining an advantage by being in that position” means playing a ball that rebounds to him off a goalpost or the crossbar having been in an offside
position or playing a ball that rebounds to him off an opponent having been in an offside position
-
From that definition, KEA should have been pulled up on point 1, but there's a strong case for Dzeko being pulled up on point 3 for their first so I can live with it.
-

I suggest you always have a lady sitting to your right from now on. Not doing so will be seen as dereliction of duty.

Guzan - Nothing really to do apart from the goals, and to be honest thought he could have done better for both - great assist though makes up for them
Bacuna - Watch out for those splinters Matty - could be a while till you get back in
Clark - did his job well
Baker - As Clark
Vlaar - MOTM - was immense
Luna - Did very well and made Milner look decidedly average - one critism - when he gets into forward positions i do wish he would fire in a cross on the run rather than think he has to get to byline all the time
Delph - really mature performance from him against world class opposition in midfield
Sylla - started poorly but got better and more involved as game went on
KEH - I was slating him until he scored and then he started to get really into the game
Weinmann - again looked out of sorts and was a headless chicken at times, especially 1st half. The drive for the free kick was excellent and the goal and celebration afterwards was pure class.
Kozak - Was absolutley dead on his feet at end of 80 mins but fair play to him, he worked his socks off and was starting to get the right flick ons at the end
Bowery - Did exactly was what asked of him and you cannot complain about that effort.
Lambert - fair play to him to try something else, maybe the personnel made his choice of line up a little bit easier but even so i like the fact we had a plan B
Once we had the equaliser i thought the home crowd was superb - pity we cannot keey it at that intensity for longer as the young platers obviously feed off it

Football certainly is a game of two halves. After witnessing the Villa transformation from 1st to 2nd half on Sarturday, I didn't expect it to happen again so soon. I help manage my son's U15's team. We were 3-0 down at half time yesterday and getting well and truly hammered. I mentioned the Villa game to them at half time and stressed how things can change in a game. We were soon 4-0 after half time, but amazingly ended up winning 5-4 with practically the last kick of the game. I do love football!

I remember years ago we were 2-0 down at half time and our player boss took himself off to watch and see where we were going wrong , we ended up winning 3-2 and strangely he never did figure out what the problem was ;)

Probably one of the best come backs was December 1998 when we played Arsenal. 0-2 down at HT (Bergkamp 2 goals) and seemingly out of it. Then came came the Santa parachutist accident - he crashed into the old Trinity Road Stand Roof and fell what must have been 80ft on to the pitch and amazingly survived. The second-half was obviously delayed but we came back and won 3-2 with Dion Dublin scoring late-on from a corner - what a game! I think we returned to the top of the Premier League that day! Now that was dramatic....
-
This result means that we are 7-3 better than Manure.

Great win for your boys, that's what football is about. Great resilence and take your chances when they come. Whatever comments there might be about "papering over the cracks", having that resilience is half the battle. And when you didn't have your best forwards it's an even more impressive result. From our (City's) perspective it's becoming rather too frequent an occurrence so make sure you do the same to Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and United. (I think you've already beaten the Arse which is no mean feat this season. Anyway, well done. If I hadn't been on holiday, I'd have been on here on the day.
