Available Tuesday night.
-
Need to play more like that second half. Ideally for both first and second half. Oh well, we go again.
-
It isn't enough to have 45 minutes when you're just...not shit.
Apart from Weimann's chance (which should perhaps have been a penalty?) we didn't really come very close in the second half. Just not good enough.
-
If we can't get something from that, looking at our upcoming games, I think we're relegated now.
-
Sorry but yeah the second half was good, but we were killed by the first half. Putting 5 at the back is utter insanity and it's dropped us down again.
-
Still staying up.
-
Fair play .... they at least give it a good go
-
Before the pen we had 3 good chances
After it there was Wiemann, Baker header and a couple where Benteke should have done better.
Buy 2 midfielders that are big and strong and can compete and we stay up IMO. Don't and we are down.
-
Not good enough, but signs of improvement.
I suppose.
-

I thought the second half was good enough, we should never have put ourself in a position where we neede 2 goals just to draw level, 90 minutes like the second half and we'd have pissed it.
-
Utterly shambolic first half. Shit or bust second half and we gave it a really good go but you can't turn up for 45 minutes and expect to win games.
And it looks like Wigan and QPR have picked up points so we're worse off than we were before. Not a good night.
-
If we do go down, 0 points from Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle at home will be what did us.
-
We've made our own bed as a club. We will be getting what we deserve, and while we've had next to no luck we really haven't been good enough to deserve any. We are now looking over the cliff face into the abyss.
-
Fair play .... they at least give it a good go
You can't ask for more than that from the players.
As for the manager, he blew it with the tactics in the first half.
-

We will not buy. We are down
-
Rubbish. We Lost!!
-
Lambert's mistakes with the selection and formation were absolutely shocking, and that's what cost us that one.
-
Fucking pricks, can't even put two good halves together. Good job we are gunna sign a couple of players before Thursday oh wait......!
-
No doubt some will say it was ok because we of the second half. Well it wasn't. We should never have gone 2-0 down in the first place! Lambert started Bent and proved to everyone it was the wrong decision by taking him off. He is clueless and should go now. Truly awful manager who makes McLeish look like Mourinho. Lambert out! Lerner Out!
Oh and we're going down 100% now.
-
We're not relegated - it's still in our hands. But it's getting increasingly harder.
Get a couple of players in before the Everton game, play there with the same intensity as the second half tonight and we will we be fine.
-
Unless there are injuries I can't see Bent starting again for a while.
-
We are a long ball team devoid of ideas, bannan, nzogbia, clark and bennett are not good players.
-
Time to stop f**king about now. 442, energy and WIDTH!! Just like this second half performance. Sort it Lambert!
-
If we can't get something from that, looking at our upcoming games, I think we're relegated now.
I think we can get something off West Ham but apart from that it's a bit daunting. Reading away is going to be a biggie.
-
If we do go down, 0 points from Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle at home will be what did us.
Spot on Pete.
Spot on.
Their winner was a stunner. Our stunner smacks the post.
-
Dunno where that leaves us.
In some ways it's the worst of both worlds.
We lost again but not convincingly enough to make Lerner do something.
Not that I wanted us to lose.... but you get what I mean.
-
Bottom line is, tonight was about getting 3 points. Our first half display made that impossible, in spite of a good effort in the second. Our 'formation' in the first half killed us completely and ruined any chance we had. It was utterly clueless. The loss at home to Newcastle means regardless of second half there aren't really any positives.
-
No more 352. Ever.
Sell Bent. For anything, to anyone. Tomorrow. Use that to bring in a defensive midfielder, get Warnock back in at LB, sign NRC to sit on the bench for cover and bring in a cheap CB. Yes, even Curties Davies.
We can be saved. Save us.
-
Utterly shambolic first half. Shit or bust second half and we gave it a really good go but you can't turn up for 45 minutes and expect to win games.
And it looks like Wigan and QPR have picked up points so we're worse off than we were before. Not a good night.
Phil Thompson was raving about us second half on SSN. Shame we couldn't put the chances away.
-
After losing to Bradford and Millwall in one week can Villa get even more worse? yes they can!
-
Second half was good ?
It was gung-ho 'we have nothing to lose' hoofball, apart from the first 10 minutes or so. That's not 'good', it's desperate. You can't play games like that unless you are down and out and have nothing to lose. It was just an adrenalin reaction to the dire situation we found ourselves in due to stupidity.
The first half was absolutely SHOCKING in every way possible. Dreadful tactics, dreadful formation, and dreadful execution
We are going down. After that you can draw no other logicla conclusion. Maybe sacking him in the morning and replacing him with ANYONE with even the vaguest bit of tactical nous might help. But he's dragged us down way too far to survive now in my humble opinion.
-
If we have no money, then sell Bent to anyone, and get 1, maybe 2 competative midfielders with the money.
Weimann showed yet again he is a better player for us than Bent, and well played, Gabby, not a big fan of his, but his power and pace made a difference.
Should'nt have lost today, but the 2nd half performance gives us hope.
-
Thank you and good night.
-
I don't know how many times we need to get battered with 5 at the back before the penny drops, but it's getting really boring now. The decent second half didn't make up for how woeful we were first half. And now we go away to Everton, where we'll get fuck all.
-
Damage done early on. Decent second half although it was only poxy Newcastle and we still lost.
-
Lambert playing Bent was a huge mistake, when Weiman and Gabby came on we looked a different side. Still no alternitive though to lobbing the ball to Benteke and hoping for the best. Still Newcastle are shit and havn't won away so it says a lot about us at the moment.
-
No doubt some will say it was ok because we of the second half. Well it wasn't. We should never have gone 2-0 down in the first place! Lambert started Bent and proved to everyone it was the wrong decision by taking him off. He is clueless and should go now. Truly awful manager who makes McLeish look like Mourinho. Lambert out! Oh and we're going down 100% now.
Plenty of people have been slagging Lambert for not playing Bent. So he plays him and gets slated. There are times when, whatever he does, unless it works perfectly someone will give him stick.
-
An exciting second half and you can't fault the effort in that 45 minutes, but really that is not the football to keep us up. It was like watching a game on the last day of the season where one team has to score to stay in the league.
I can't see any way we will improve enough to avoid relegation. I'm not at all sure we'll win another game this season, to be honest.
-
Not good enough. You can't expect to turn up for one half and expect to win games .I want Lambert out(Won't happen)He is completely inept
This team is going down
-
I really don't know what to say that has not already been said a dozen times on a dozen threads.
We are a ship sinking in a sea of our own mismanagement.
-
I do like a 3.00 Saturday kick off. Plenty of those next season. Know any decent pubs near the Galpharm Stadium?
-
The big ingredient that's been missing for too long - hard work.
Repeat that second half performance with the same level of commitment and we should just about stay up.
-
Fair play .... they at least give it a good go
After they were two down
-

Yeah that's the point. Lambert will point to the second half, but the first half and his plan killed us in this game. 5 at the back does not fucking work as we get no support to the midfield. It was noticeable that Westwood was much better in the second half with some support.
-
The 352 formation has to go
-
Can people stop acting like the second half means anything. We played well in the second half against Southampton, it's not like we picked up after that game. We got NO points today against relegation rivals at home. We deserve to go down.
-
As the man just said, you can't blame the players for that. Lambchop clearly got it wrong 1st half. There is a decent team in there if he could stop pissing around with tactics they clearly don't understand!
-
We're not relegated - it's still in our hands. But it's getting increasingly harder.
Get a couple of players in before the Everton game, play there with the same intensity as the second half tonight and we will we be fine.
That's where you're wrong mate. We're deep in relegation and its out of our hands-if everyone else picks up the points they should we are down. It's in the hands of that stupid twat yank
-
Plenty of people have been slagging Lambert for not playing Bent. So he plays him and gets slated. There are times when, whatever he does, unless it works perfectly someone will give him stick.
He's getting slated tonight because he got it totally wrong in the first half. We were all over the place and it cost us the game.
-
He has to go 442 from now on. It can't bring results any worse than the 532/352 we are currently using.
-
No doubt some will say it was ok because we of the second half. Well it wasn't. We should never have gone 2-0 down in the first place! He gets paid millions of pounds to live and die by his decisions, and he's made far too many bad ones this season. 5 at the back again, when it keeps ending with us being battered is madness.
-

To be fair Bent was useless but mainly because he needs service which Villa can't provide in Lambert's set up
-
Wigan's draw puts us in the bottom 3 on goal difference, Reading are one point behind us with a game in hand. It sounds bad, but I still firmly believe we'll beat the drop.
-
It's amazing to think how we can be possibly worse than last year being managed by mcleish.
-
I don't think starting Bent was a problem, I think starting with a 5 man defence and a 2 man midfield was. Neither striker saw the ball in the first half due to the ridiculous tactics. Lowton and Bennett are not wing backs. End of, they're barely capable full backs on current form either. So asking them to play as we did was suicidal.
-
The 352 formation has to go
Even Brian Little, a manager who played 3-5-2 was saying how obvious it was we needed to play 442
-
When they only played 1 centre forward first half we should have changed shape early,
-
good 2nd half but we won't stay up on the back of good halves. That's a hat-trick of home reverses to the rubbish around us - Wigan, Soton, Newcastle and we'll pay big style cos we've got some tough games in Feb
-
No doubt some will say it was ok because we of the second half. Well it wasn't. We should never have gone 2-0 down in the first place! I'm not arguing formation, i'm saying plenty have said we have to start Bent and that Lambert is crap for not starting him. Bent starts and then it's the wrong decision and a sign Lambert is shit.
-
"The second 45 minutes, if Villa play like that, they will remain in the Premier League, because their endeavour and vigour was fantastic." But we won't unfortunately.
-
He has to go 442 from now on. It can't bring results any worse than the 532/352 we are currently using.
Proved it after the subs. Went 442 and we should have won the game imo.
-
At least the half time talk did some good! We are deep in brown stuff, but bring a bit of that fight and desire....we may get a result one day?
-
No 3 or 5 at the fucking back. 4-4-2 and then build from there, our players aren't good enough to do anything else. Also Weimann must start.
-
QPR play Norwich at home this weekend, we're away to Everton, I can see us being 1 point above bottom by 17:00 Saturday.
-
We're gone!
-
We can still stay up but only if the manager learns from his mistakes.
Anyway, we go ag.....oh fuck it.
-
When they only played 1 centre forward first half we should have changed shape early,
Exactly. Three at the back was invented to man-mark two strikers and have a sweeper spare to mop up. Newcastle played one up front and crammed the midfield and we were clearly being held back by our nonsense of a formation. It should have been changed immediately.
-
It's ironic that having sacked McLeish who was as conventional and conservative as it's possible to be, and having appointed a manager who can mix it up tactically, we only ever look good when we go back to meat-and-potatoes 442.
-
No doubt some will say it was ok because we of the second half. Well it wasn't. We should never have gone 2-0 down in the first place! Which fans? Fans that don't watch any games? Fans who listen to clueless pundits who go on reputation instead of form? If you read the beginning of the match thread you will see I was against Bent starting anyway. He was awful at Millwall, why did he deserve a start here? We have lost to three relegation rivals in three consecutive home games (not to mention Bradford) and people think the manager should keep his job? Standards of acceptability have really dropped among some Villans.
-
The big ingredient that's been missing for too long - hard work.
Repeat that second half performance with the same level of commitment and we should just about stay up.
We won't stay up.The second half was just usthrowing the kitchen sink at them because we had to.Newcastle had not won away this season FFS
-
has he resigned yet??????????????
-
So whats it going to be Lambert ?
4-4-2
3-5-2
5-3-2
Just make a decision and stick with it you fucking tit, were going down,so settle a system and use it
All this fucking arsing around changing the system every game just makes you look even more inept than you are.
Or failing that, just admit your a fucking joke and fuck off
-
"The second 45 minutes, if Villa play like that, they will remain in the Premier League, because their endeavour and vigour was fantastic." But we won't unfortunately.
Even if we do, what do you think the other teams will be doing ;)
-
The problem is we're now so buried that we need amazing form to save us and I don't know where that comes from.
-
There's positives to take from that second half. We're only in relegation zone on goal difference, it could be worse.
-
As much as I'd love to feel a dash of optimism from an improved second half you got to say that relegation looks assured now....defeats to the teams around us with games drip dripping away leaves us needing to bear teams who are FAR superior to us and without any reinforcements tomorrow (& let's face it there are none coming in) I think we are having to rely on miracles happening & they very rarely do at this level of football. I think we've gone.
-
Thompson saying PL got tactics completely wrong
-
Into the bottom 3. I wonder if we will get out again.
-
Wigan's draw puts us in the bottom 3 on goal difference, Reading are one point behind us with a game in hand. It sounds bad, but I still firmly believe we'll beat the drop.
Deluded. Maybe you think we will pick points up against Everton away? I don't. Maybe you think we will pick up points against the set piece specialists west ham and allardyces Hail Mary brigade. Their strength is our weakness and for all his weaknesses Collins will bully this lot into submission, so I don't. By then it could be too late. How do you presume we will stay up because I'd love some positivity now
-
He had options so why start Bennet whos been proven to be sadly lacking? Bannon got better because he was under no pressure. Neither of our backs can play the wingback role. I also think Bent should be sold and the money used to strengthen midfield.
-
We have now lost 'must win' home games v Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle.
We are sinking fast and have a manager at the helm that doesn't appear to have a clue
5 at the back at home in a game we had to win reeks of being shit scared to concede and by the time he switched it to 4-4-2 it was game over. Spirited second half performance but the damage was already done and we are now in the bottom 3, have no new signings in January and nothing apparently imminent.
Doomed.
-
We can still stay up but only if the manager learns from his mistakes.
Anyway, we go ag.....oh fuck it.
he hasn't so far
-
It's ironic that having sacked McLeish who was as conventional and conservative as it's possible to be, and having appointed a manager who can mix it up tactically, we only ever look good when we go back to meat-and-potatoes 442.
Well McLeish seems to actively discourage players from passing along the ground to each other.
The point is that they're both stuck in the '90s, but while for McLeish that's the British '90s for Lambert it's German. Either way, it's old hat we're getting.
-
Into the bottom 3. I wonder if we will get out again.
Not under this manager we won't.Thompson saying we're down
-
The problem is we're now so buried that we need amazing form to save us and I don't know where that comes from.
We don't need amazing form, the bottom 6-7 positions are balanced on a knife edge. It won't take something incredible to save ourselves this season. We just need to be competent. Sadly I think that's also beyond us.
-
There's positives to take from that second half. We're only in relegation zone on goal difference, it could be worse.
How?
-
Fucking hell I'm sitting here agreeing totally with Phil Thompson, what is going on?!?!
-
There's positives to take from that second half. We're only in relegation zone on goal difference, it could be worse.
Its the games remaining though. Thats when it will go to points.
-

Agreed, mainly the media and part-timers who've been calling for Bent. Most fans can see that the one who should be starting up top with Benteke is Weimann.
And unfortunately Benteke's head dropped in the last 15 minutes, he was in on numerous occasions but didn't gamble.
-
Shall we go again?
Good second half, all a bit hit and hope for the last 15 minutes again.
But we're down, let it be swift and merciful, but we are so going down.
-
I do like a 3.00 Saturday kick off. Plenty of those next season. Know any decent pubs near the Galpharm Stadium?
I've been twice to the ground and walked from the station. It's the only ground that seems to get further away the more you walk, what should have been a 10 minute walk took half an hour, didn't help that the guy we were following in a football shirt was actually on his way to the supermarket.
-
Play 442, show the same desire as we did second half and we might just have a slim chance of staying up.
-
Owner needs to go. Manager needs to go. Same old shit. Bored of it. Resigned to fate.
-
The Villa management team told me that they thought they had turned a corner at the Albion....... they really are deluded!
I'm sorry but again I say , if we can ask no more from the players and yet again they have lost, then clearly they are just not good enough!
-
Well McLeish seems to actively discourage players from passing along the ground to each other.
With our midfield that might not be such a bad idea.
-
It's ironic that having sacked McLeish who was as conventional and conservative as it's possible to be, and having appointed a manager who can mix it up tactically, we only ever look good when we go back to meat-and-potatoes 442.
The football McLeish played compared to that second half was very different. All about high pressing and it should be persevered with.
-
Fucking hell I'm sitting here agreeing totally with Phil Thompson, what is going on?!?!
Because the problems are so simple to solve even he can spot them. Pity our manager can't...........
-
Worrying thing apart from everything else, for all the 2nd half possession, we still couldn't score from open play. We are are f**ked. Can't see us picking up anymore points this season.
-
Can't fault the players for their effort, the gave everything. Thing is we aren't good enough.
I hate to say the but there is NOT a decent team in there somewhere, there is at best an below par Premier League team that without any confidence is a relegation side.
Newcastle have not won an away game all season, they backed off, panicked 2nd half and we had almost total possession and although we worked our collective socks of we still created very little. That should tell you everything.
I really can't see us staying up at all now.
-
If we do go down, 0 points from Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle at home will be what did us.
Especially when more action and planning for the Jan transfer window could easily have meant points from 2 of those 3.
-
Pardew joins the long line of opponents who say 'Villa will be safe, no problem'. I really hope they're seeing something we can't, because it's not looking good.
-
All the lads in the huddle before the game were serious, except Bent, he was laughing at something and on the tv it looked like Benteke swore at him. Somebody double check, but i swear that Bent was laughing and Benteke told him to fuck off, sure of it.
-
Fucking hell I'm sitting here agreeing totally with Phil Thompson, what is going on?!?!

He has spotted them. He said we need some strength in midfield. Is Lerner allowing him to bring that strength in? I doubt it!
-

Another way of looking at - Look at the table then deduct three points from those teams. It's their wins against us that have got them clear.
-
I'd have thought he'd have realised that if having 5 defenders still results in losing then maybe we don't have the players for that system. Go to something that works with what we have. Lambert is a professional football manager that before his time with us was heralded as some sort of tactical bright light in the modern game. That story that did the rounds when he outwitted Rodgers at Swansea. Well, I'm seeing little to indicate that he has the ability to change quickly as needed and in fact he appears as stubborn as MON in sticking to the plan. I get that being obstinate is a quality to be valued at times, but in times of desperation durely you have to be a little bit flexible. It is his inflexibility and inability to read and adapt the gameplan that is killing us.
-
Let's face it folks, it is only blind optimism that makes people say with any great authority that they think we will stay up. We have won (I think) six of our last forty matches. We now need to win six of our next fifteen. You'd have to say it's against the odds.
It's hard to be angry rather than just frustrated after that 2nd half but we have scored two goals in six home games and a bit of fight (which is the least we should expect) doesn't change that. Newcastle had not won away all season.
It's just depressing.
-
QPR losing Nelson is a bonus. Hope they don't sign Samba
-
Opposition managers don't watch us every week, very easy to be nice when you've won.
-
We have won (I think) six of our last forty matches.
Is that right? If so it's almost unbelievable.
-
Fucking hell I'm sitting here agreeing totally with Phil Thompson, what is going on?!?!
Because the problems are so simple to solve even he can spot them. Pity our manager can't...........
He has spotted them. He said we need some strength in midfield. Is Lerner allowing him to bring that strength in? I doubt it!
I honestly think Lerner would be happy with that performance
-

Newcastle are a really different side now to 2 weeks back though.
-
The second half proved attack is the bet form of defence. Christ knows we can't defend so we might as well start pushing from the start, keeping their full backs and wingers back.
-
All the lads in the huddle before the game were serious, except Bent, he was laughing at something and on the tv it looked like Benteke swore at him. Somebody double check, but i swear that Bent was laughing and Benteke told him to fuck off, sure of it.
I for one am pissed of this "make it look like we are motivated" huddle.
-
Stupid formations = play shit
4-4-2 = play well
Surely 4-4-2 from here on in.
Easily deserves at least a draw in that game.
-
I don't know what to do now. Go to bed, stay up posting guff on here, watch crap on tele, have a beer, listen to some more Napalm Death?
I feel numb, as if we've been relegated today.
-
How can any team survive if they're losing to relegation rivals at home. It's beyond disbelief.
-
I don't know what to do now. Go to bed, stay up posting guff on here, watch crap on tele, have a beer, listen to some more Napalm Death?

I'm going to pan some zombie heads. [insert your own Villa joke here]
-
I'm numb I really am, don't know what to say anymore
-
We're down. I've accepted it. Just want it over now.
-
You've got to beat fellow strugglers at home and the last three home games were all must win, should win games. 5 or 6 points would have seen us reasonably comfortable edging towards mid-table, Even 3 draws would have seen a bit of daylight between us and the bottom 3. To lose all three means we have relegation written all over us.
And Lambert doesn't seem to be learning from his mistakes, or know how to correct them. Signs of a bad and ultimately doomed manager.

It's hard to be angry rather than just frustrated after that 2nd half but we have scored two goals in six home games and a bit of fight (which is the least we should expect) doesn't change that. Newcastle had not won away all season.
It's just depressing.
Newcastle are a really different side now to 2 weeks back though.
Because they're radically strengthened their squad.
Meanwhile, our owner is sat on his fucking hands thousands of miles away, shitting on about "multiyear lack of competitive stability".
What a fucking joke. Lerner has not got the first idea.
-
We have won (I think) six of our last forty matches.
Is that right? If so it's almost unbelievable.
It might be seven. It's no more. Basically, that's the number of games we have won since the first day of 2012 I think and that is now more that two halves of two separate seasons so more than a full season worth of matches. Conditioned to lose unfortunately, at least McLeish could bore us all to safety. We are wide open with this team and sides which leak goals usually go down.
-
And so endeth January. Probably the worst single month in our history.
It's over. This team is simply not capable of getting anywhere near the 20 or so points we need.
-
I don't know what to do now. Go to bed, stay up posting guff on here, watch crap on tele, have a beer, listen to some more Napalm Death?
I feel numb, as if we've been relegated today.
Beer and Napalm Death, loud as fuck.
-
The only way we'd have equalised tonight is if we were playing ourselves. And even then we would probably have lost it in the last minute. Which means we'd have won and we'd be out the bottom three.
Ah, if only there was a team worse than us in this division to beat. Sadly, there isn't, and we'll be finishing bottom of the league. It's no more than we deserve in all honesty.
-
Relegation will be decided as much on quality as those who acted upon their weaknesses. We've done nothing and will get what is coming to us as a result.
-
Lerner has left us. This idea of us losing loads of money if we're relegated is not so simple. Most of the Sky money goes on wages. Go into the Championship, lose the wages and its much the same if you're just worried about the money. And in truth, much as it makes me really angry, another bit of me thinks that he did put in £200,000,000 into the club and there has to come a time when you say bollocks to it, tattoo on your ankle or not.
-
Fuck them all. If they don't give a shit then neither do i.
-
The saddest thing is I don't feel gutted anymore.

Lerner is so stupid, he needs protecting from himself.
I used to think he was a well meaning idiot, but now I don't even think he's well-meaning.
It takes a special type of moron to spend £200m getting us *exactly* where we were when Doug sold up.
Bravo, Lerner, bravo.
-
Our last 4 league games at home all lost. Spurs, Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle.
-
Definitely on the way down now. The fact that Newcastle have got their first away win tonight says it all.
We were very close to relegation last season and lucky to stay up. Our current league position is very much where we deserve to be and I can't see things getting any better in view of the games coming up and our lack of a defence/midfield/experience/tactical awareness.
-
That Football League Show makes ITV's FA Cup Highlights seem satisfying. 10 seconds for most Villa games followed by caveman Claridge mumbling nonsense will be hard to bear. Let's hope we only have to watch it for one season.
-
Mcleish probably read the signs right, that the players were not good enough and the only possible way to survive was to bore everyone to death. He may just be feeling a little bit smug now.
-
Bent needs to f**k off elsewhere if he thinks anything is remotely funny at Villa Park. No points and in the bottom 3. Not sure if we have the time to make any decent signing even if money was made available. Never felt so depressed about Villa. Resigned to life outside the Premier League next season. Humiliation just gets worse and worse! Feel anxious......again!
-
For the first time I can remember I am resigned that our great club will be relegated. Thank you Lambert, thank you Lerner. Bright future....no future.
-
I never expected Villa to win and therefore why should I get annoyed, I am past caring any more, its all very, very inevitable and predictable!
-
Lambert's mistakes with the selection and formation were absolutely shocking, and that's what cost us that one.
Totally agree- game eas lost in the 1st half shambles- better 2nd half but games last 90 minutes not 45!
-

Nah, they use the same show to cover League one as well.

Looking around at the teams near us.
Wigan are beginning to fight and have been here before.
Newcastle are only going one way by the looks of it with all their new players.
QPR, certainly improving.
Even Reading have shown fight recently.
It's extremely worrying.
-

TBH, If we had that formation out in the first half and gone in 1 or 2 up, second half would have been shit instead and cost us the points.
-
Absolute stupidity with tactics in the fist half. We were asking to get striped.
Surely in the second half we played 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Gabby and Weimann out wide, rather than 4-4-2. It may have been the dodgy stream I wasn't watching.
We played very well after the half time change. That's the real annoying thing. We lost three points to a team we could have wiped the floor with had we started with the right tactics.
If we dump 3 at the back and play with the same purpose and threat we had in minutes 45-70 we stand a very good chance of staying up. Especially if we actually get a decent midfielder or two in place in the next couple of days.
The only criticism I could have of the second 45 was that we resorted to loading it into the box a bit early.
The tackle on Weimann should have been a penalty. What a difference that would have made.
-
Lamberts inability to get team selections right is turning me off persisting with him although i do agree that the owner not prepared to fund decent players is part of his problem. The argument that if we go down he is the manager to get us back up is silly because we have an owner that won't pay big money anymore so we would just get relegated again.
-
Between them, messrs Houllier, McLeish and Lambert are gradually weening me off football
-

Yep it's a pretty spectacular failure - I wonder how much he spent to keep the Brown's mediocre for 10 years as well. That's what you get when you put your mates in key positions, regardless of whether they have a clue what they are doing or not.
-
The most damning thing for the manager is the avalanche of fans, pundits and journalists queueing up to point out his glaring tactical errors. From withdrawing Zog at Sandwell, the crazy gung ho approach with half an hour left last week and the catastrophic selection in the first half tonight.
Make no mistake, the blame will fall at Lamberts feet for relegation.
-
Between them, messrs Houllier, McLeish and Lambert are gradually weening me off football
Me too.
Fuck sake, villa usually have one bad season every four or five years, not three in a row.
What I wouldn't give for a few years of mid table mediocrity.
-
This clueless so called manager has managed in the last few weeks to lose to all 3 clubs around us in the relegation zone, all at home with just a lone goal to show for it and even that was a penalty. He has managed to get knocked out of both cups to teams in lower leagues and STILL he keeps his job .How ? We deserve to be relegated and that is surely we are headed
-
Vote of confidence in PL... Waste of f--king ink. One tw-t supporting another tw-t. Hearts and spirits been ripped out of squad by mcterminater and now this useless tosser. Clearly couldn't organise sh-t in a sewer! Not goin down again til that tw-t has gone. Get some f-ckin spine in the squad. The experiment has not and won't work and for all the moments of posession if we cant bury chances it counts for f-ck all. We look like a joke on set pieces and an easy 3 points home and away. Worse goal difference in premier league (-26) says it all...can't score and soft at back. F-ckin nightmare!

Fair point well made. Except Randy don't give a shit anymore, Doug for all his faults does.

Past caring. Sorry. I dont even feel the hurt any more. Really its up to the team/manager to get me interested again.
-

Shit cliche but when your down you get fuckall going your way. I am still confident that we will get out of this mess. I may need medication, but i am still confident. Destraught at half time but felt better later, even though we lost. We will get something from the Everton game........ Pills please nurse, oh, and can you pass me that jacket with the shiny buckles on the back ? Mmmmm, that feels better.
-
Im sure we will bring players in but this farcical risk of waiting till the last minute has cost us far too many points.
Lambert will not get sacked and i think we will go down - yet again his tactics and selection, formation was wrong but we are are fucked im afraid.
He should have gone after the saints game - we know now that lerner will stand by him whatever and so our situation is hopeless.
Shocking and sad times at this great club and may those to blame hold their heads in shame.
-
Thing is looking at other results is largely irrelevant, we lose all the time. The other results don't matter.
-

Napalm Death are definitely an acquired taste!

The scary thing is that if we go down, our ability to bounce back will probably still be in the hands of a manager who looks tactically and motivationally clueless and an owner whose intelligence is inversely proportionate to his wealth.
-

This is no over reaction, but I think we'll finish bottom this season. We're going backwards fast. Everyone else is fighting, picking up points. QPR have taken points off Man City, Spurs, Chelsea in their last few games, Reading won their last two from nowhere, Wigan did well tonight from 2-0 down and know how to handle this pressure, this position.
-
Fuck me, fuck me sideways with a rusty combine harvester. The same mistakes, (go) again and again. Why the fuck can he not see this? Lambert and his nonchalance makes me want to puke shit all over myself.
-
We're not down yet. There are points to play for and I feel we will get a few when people least expect it. We desperately need at least two signings to lift the place, give us more fight and more options - but we all know that.
I thought Barry Bannan stood up to be counted in that second half - there's a very decent player in there.
-
Just got home.
Wet, miserable and angry.
Just heard our manager on the radio state that he's never heard a standing ovation for a side that's lost.
Shambolic tactics, 5 at the back with two midgets battling five acoss the middle, look what happens in the second half you tactical genius when you play with 4 in midfield, two of them wide, you get momentum and everyone knows their jobs.
But what he fuck do I know I've only supported Villa for 50 years.
I thought I'd never see a Villa manager as bad as Billy McBingo, but I was wrong.
Lambert you clueless fucking idiot
-
The maths are simple. Lerner is either incredibly fucking stupid or disinterested, he cannot be both.
-
Er, the Bannan joke doing the rounds last week about the Welsh ballboy were never so true as his shooting tonight. Abject.
-

Maybe. He has to show more of the same on a regular basis though.

Oh yes he can...

Bannan was no worse that Westwood tonight.

Actually, he could be both disinterested and stupid.

What did that tosser in the Lower Holte's flag say? It'd be nice to know what my opinion is.
-
I have chucked the towel in - championship here we come - who gives a flying f*ck if where we finish in the bottom 3, fact is we will be in the championship? So lets go out with a bang instead of a wimper and get Sir Brian & JG in NOW to instill some fight/pride and get rid of the b/shit tactics of PL and show our young squad what it should mean to wear the badge - running out to: would be a start!!!!!
-

Bannan is shit!

If it wasn't for me having to write about Villa every week, I would have stopped paying attention weeks ago. I wrote my piece on tonight's game completely dispassionately, like it was happening to somebody else's team. I don't feel I write about Aston Villa anymore, that's for sure.
-
If I had to choose between Lambert staying and some new signings or Lambert going and no new signings, I'd choose the latter all day long. The second half showed we could have beat them with the right personnel/tactics but TSM (yes, he has taken the title from McLeish and I will address him as that henceforth) was too typically clueless too make the right decisions. He will take us nowhere (other then League One) and needs too leave ASAP. Even though a new manager won't keep us up now, at least he will be able to get to learn about the squad in advance of our promotion push next season.
-

True.
But at least he wanted the ball unlike some.
-
Just got back.
Knew the players picked wouldnt be good enough - couldn't pick a formation - but then never can with this bloke.
2nd half much better - gabby was destroying their rightback - so why then did he go and play in a central role ?
We're gone - time to start facing up to it.
No new players in = no desire to try to stay in the league. Thanks Randy .
One other thing - when Steven Taylor was bouncing up and down in front of Guzan , trying to make it difficult for Guzan to communicate with the players in the wall - not one, not fucking one of our players turned round and came to shift him. Shows the team spirit this failure of a manager has instilled in the club. Pathetic.
-
The 352 formation has to go
Even Brian Little, a manager who played 3-5-2 was saying how obvious it was we needed to play 442
Yet at the start he said that going with the 3 5 2 was the way to go.

Sorry if i was harsh on bannan, i am deeply depressed tonight after this defeat !
-
The maths are simple. Lerner is either incredibly fucking stupid or disinterested, he cannot be both.
Actually, he could be both disinterested and stupid.
We will soon see over the next two days. Transfers still possible. We live in hope. I cannot be bothered to rant anymore, i am just to tired from the last 3 years. Fuck it. My stress levels have gone through the roof to the point that pre- match i am just a grumpy twat, and it gets no better after the games.
I am going to spend Saturday on the beach with the Mrs and bollocks to the football, enough is enough for now. It's doing my brain in. Relegated or not i will still love this club more than everything. UTV.

i tend to agree with both of you. He isn't as good as he thinks he is, but he never hides or goes missing and tries his bollocks off. He wasn't the worst player out there by a long chalk.
Bent can fuck right off. Weimann an Gabby embarrassed him tonight.
-

Most would agree with you that he's clearly not good enough, I just don't think he's particularly worse than any of the others.
-
A mix of emotions. Mostly frustration.
Its quite possible we can survive if we abandon the crap formations like a flat back fucking 5 against a team that until tonight had not won away all season,
play 4-3-3 and also if we sign a couple of decent players.
There is no room to manoeuver on that one. Get the business done at all costs. Do it now.
And please Villa, TRY AND PLAY WELL IN TWO HALVES FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!
-

I was harsh on him, im deeply depressed with this defeat , i apologise.

This time last week I was gutted, upset and fuming.
Tonight, I really couldn't give a fuck.
40 years of going down there and that first 45 minutes was as bad as I can ever remember seeing (probably since the last time I said it.)
Second half was better, but only because we tried to force and threw everything at them. There wasnt actually much quality and the final 15 mins we played virtually the same as we did against the 4th division side.
The manager OBVIOUSLY does not learn from previous failures.
I think that fat lady is gargling and clearing her throat.
-
Three things let us down today.
1.5 at back against 1 up top.one clever pass one down.
2.Picking Bent.
3.Our use of the Floatball tactic has to stop.Every corner, every free kick and every cross from the half way line.
-
We could get out of the shit with the right tactics, couple of signings, bit of luck. However, PL seems tactically brittle and can't deliver a full 90. He's got to gamble now, the previous approach hasn't worked. Wasn't impressed with Westwood not closing down the ball for the Cabaye goal and giving it a superman manoeuvre instead. Basics, you'd get slaughtered If you defended like that on Billesley Common. We've just got to go again, arghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
-

Obviously I didn't see the incident referred to there, but if one of our players went back to "shift" Taylor, wouldn't they have suddenly dropped the offside line back within the 6 yard box (or wherever Taylor was) for all the Newcastle players if the free kick was taken quickly.
-
The Villa have driven me absoluteley mad tonight.
From the absurdity of the wing backs in the first half when we had no possession at all to the promise of the early 2nd half and then to the lump it down the middle at the end of the game.
Gabby came on played wide, ran the fullback stupid, won a penalty and from several crosses we nearly scored again all within 15 minutes of the 2nd half.
Gabby then plays down the middle for the last 30 minutes, we lump it forward playing for flick ons and huff and puff without really creating anything. Was was the manager not screaming at Gabby to stick wide. Why ???????????????????????????? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.
-
Most frustrating thing is its only jan still have have 14 games left we ain't gonna win em all but have over 40 points to play for.I know its difficult but villa fans need to be behind the club more than ever,to avoid relegation we need 5 wins, can't be having ppl saying relegation is a certainty, however I can't believe that the club are doing nothing to stop the rot, quite simply 2-3 experienced heads are needed with a leader to get the youngsters and the game by the scruff of the neck and sort it out! With very little money we have I think we need to stand by lambert till end of season as as it may cause more disruption sacking him.We can't afford to sack him,the more money we have for the next 2 days the better, next two days are crucial though!!!! Villa till I die!!!!
-
Bannan was only decent second half because they sat back and there was no pressure him in possession. Same goes for Westwood.
-

Taylor was the only newcastle bloke in the box. He was making a right nuisance of himself and not one of our lot turned hair.
-

God forbid he actually gets a modicum of credit for improving in the second half.
-
Me and Fin Feds Dad were watching the players warm up before the match. It was the bit where the players take shots at Given in the 'other' net. It was pathetic, not one of the players scored and they were clearly just messing around. Totally amateurish and achieving nothing. Given didn't get anything out if it and the players didn't prepare correctly. Not impressed.
-
right I'm off to bed, goodnight all
-
Bannan always tries his best, I don't think it's right to slag people off just because they may not be good enough for this league. For now he is part of this squad and until he starts looking like he doesn't care what happens (which I doubt will ever happen) then he'll get my backing.
-

Andy, it was very similar to Bannans and Westwoods 'shots' from outside the box tonight.

Obviously I didn't see the incident referred to there, but if one of our players went back to "shift" Taylor, wouldn't they have suddenly dropped the offside line back within the 6 yard box (or wherever Taylor was) for all the Newcastle players if the free kick was taken quickly.
Taylor was the only newcastle bloke in the box. He was making a right nuisance of himself and not one of our lot turned hair.
But my point still stands, whilst he is there, he is off side and out of the game and will have to come back on side for the FK. If one of our players drops back to shift him, Newcastle players could suddenly follow him in and be on top of the keeper for a quick floated ball. It is one of those that is difficult to call but I wouldn't chastise them for that. Everything else tonight though......
-
right I'm off to bed, goodnight all
Is the cat in?

I haven't thrown in the towel just yet.

But where was fin fed?
F' in Fed up, Eastie !
-
Shit first half. Decent second. We're definitely a team of two halves.
-
Most frustrating thing is its only jan still have have 14 games left we ain't gonna win em all but have over 40 points to play for.I know its difficult but villa fans need to be behind the club more than ever,to avoid relegation we need 5 wins, can't be having ppl saying relegation is a certainty, however I can't believe that the club are doing nothing to stop the rot, quite simply 2-3 experienced heads are needed with a leader to get the youngsters and the game by the scruff of the neck and sort it out! With very little money we have I think we need to stand by lambert till end of season as as it may cause more disruption sacking him.We can't afford to sack him,the more money we have for the next 2 days the better, next two days are crucial though!!!! Villa till I die!!!!
We have won 4 games out of 24; this would indicate 5 wins out of the next 14 is a) unlikely b) unlikely and c) very unlikely
There is little point backing Lambert; he will more than likely waste it on sub standard Championship players aged 18-22 rather than the experience a blind man on a galloping horse can see we need
-
Bannan gets harsh treatment in my opinion. I live abroad so don't get back to many games these days but I was at the Hawthorns the other week and everything was Bannan's fault. And I mean EVERYTHING. I think he has definite ability but his confidence is clearly in tatters at the moment. He also needs to play further forward where he can pick passes, he's also a very decent crosser from open play.

He and Westwood were massively swamped in the first half but it was hardly their fault.
On a separate note - I love Weimann and think he will go on to have a great career. He has a fantastic attitude.
-
Lambert playing Bent was a huge mistake, when Weiman and Gabby came on we looked a different side. Still no alternitive though to lobbing the ball to Benteke and hoping for the best. Still Newcastle are shit and havn't won away so it says a lot about us at the moment.
Do you think he played Bent & Benteke because Lawro said so in his prediction?!!

Well this was before wall was ready and Guzan was on his left post so agreeing with Fins dads comment. Taylor really pissed me off there. Fucking nob.
-
What did that tosser in the Lower Holte's flag say? It'd be nice to know what my opinion is.
If its the one I think you mean I think it might have said "fight like lions". To be fair I was fairly happy with that, so I hope that is what it said.
-
Just back. Can someone please explain what the fuck that first half was.

Looks that way.
I thought we deserved a point out of that but that fact that we did'nt is worrying.
-
Not read any posts yet so my two penneth is.
Bent - he needs to go, he spent 45 minutes with the sole aim of not getting hurt.
3 centre halves is bad, they struggled to work out who was marking and who was spare all the first halves.
Would hate to be a full back under Lambert, 9 men down the centre 10m of the pitch and 2 poor buggers expected to defend, operate with no cover and provide all the wide attacking threat.
We are always told you have to earn the right to play, 2x5ft nothing 8 stone weaklings in the centre will never cut it....big, strong DCM is a must by Thursday or I presume the manager and board have conceded relegation.
We can argue the bounce was against us or Dean was a prat buying all their rolling around but the long and short of it was we weren't good enough either in personnel on field or in the brain of the manager.
PS - fair play to Pardew and most of Newcastle bench for 19th minute applause
-

Playing Bent wasn't a problem it's playing 3 centre backs and 2 wing backs who haven't got a clue how to do that was the problem. In fact if Bent had been around in the second half he may have snatched a couple with all the chances we had.

I'm assuming the ref had indicated that a whistle was needed to restart it but after the Arsenal game, I never take that for granted. The other issue why it might have been a bad idea is they are so inexperienced, they probably would have done something to allow Taylor to drop like he was hit by a gunshot and give away a red card and possible pen.

Bannan gets harsh treatment in my opinion. I live abroad so don't get back to many games these days but I was at the Hawthorns the other week and everything was Bannan's fault. And I mean EVERYTHING. Got to agree. Bannan put more of a shift in tonight than Ireland has in all the time he's been here.
-
Playing Bent without giving him any service is totally pointless - no width whatsoever. We may as well sell Bent now and spunk the funds on two half decent players. Then again any decent players won't want to come will they?

The only thing keeping me sane is knowing that I'm not alone... Night all. Saturday I'm off to Goodison with an Everton fan. We go again...

Agreed, 5 wins + looks a tall order when we can't beat fellow strugglers at home. We had experienced players in Collins, Hutton, Warnock, maybe Makoun (work permit allowing) , who, whilst not great, could all have done a job for us. Lambert took the risky route of untried youngsters and PL newcomers and it's blowing up in his face. Even if he gets 2-3 players in his "tactics" and formations are so shit I'm not sure it will make much difference.

Nothing wrong with that flags statement at all. It just maybe to late though.
Needed to be in thicker letters and address it to someone. "Lerner Save our...." makes more of a statement as if he is shown a pic, he would know the fans are turning on him. At the moment it either looks like a plea to potential owners (who won't come in until they can get us on the cheap after relegation if there are any out there), or a prayer to Jebus in the sky which might have more affect then Lerner has the last few months.
-
A mate of a mate came to the game for the first time this season (he's not a Villa fan btw). Even though I told him how bad we've been before the game he simply couldn't believe how completely and utterly inept we were in the first half. We improved hugely in the second with a change to 4-4-2, and with Weimann and Gabby on we played with more conviction, but that loss, along with losing at home to the likes of Wigan and Southampton, is the final chance gone for me. To make things worse on the way back a Sheff Wed fan had rung WM & said he's watched us a lot this season and thinks we'd struggle in the Championship with that team as we simply aren't physical enough in midfield. Oh and can I please ask that Bannan never plays for us again
-
If we do go down, 0 points from Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle at home will be what did us.
Spot on Pete.
Spot on.
Their winner was a stunner. Our stunner smacks the post.
Yeah that's true, similar shots aswell. That was right after Newcastle scored the first goal so quick goal back and it may have been a norwich type game.
On Cabaye, class act. Makes Newcastle tick. Never mind all their new french players, I was more concerned whether he'd be fit for this considering he went off injured in their last game. He did and scored the winner.
Kind of makes you wish we'd pursued him more in January 2011 instead of blowing the midfield funds on Makoun and Bradley.
Maybe Westwood will develop over time into that sort of player but a Diame and Cabaye type midfielder in the centre and that would be enough.
-
The big ingredient that's been missing for too long - hard work.
Repeat that second half performance with the same level of commitment and we should just about stay up.
We won't stay up.The second half was just usthrowing the kitchen sink at them because we had to.Newcastle had not won away this season FFS
If it makes you happy to think that - enjoy. My only doubt is does Lambert have the brains to see the obvious. For the first times in months there was a purpose to our game. Bradford was throwing the kitchen sink.
-
Player of the match was the Newcastle GK.
-
Bannan always tries his best, I don't think it's right to slag people off just because they may not be good enough for this league. For now he is part of this squad and until he starts looking like he doesn't care what happens (which I doubt will ever happen) then he'll get my backing.
Yes. If he kept things a bit simpler he'd get on far better.

One thing this did seem to show. Pardew is definitely not that good a manager for allowing his team to be so dominated so much after the first half. The only thing going for him was the experience of what subs when to take momentum away.
-
An improved second half but it's all just so bloody frustrating to watch, this is not the first game this season where I have felt like I could actually kill someone with my bare hands afterwards.
The non-buying of players in January just takes the biscuit and sadly I think it's too late now. Looking at the upcoming fixtures I can't see us staying up unless we get some incredible good luck from somewhere.
I might skip watching the game against Everton and do something more relaxing instead, such as having someone hammer large, rusty nails into my neck and face.

Maybe but i don't think there's anything wrong with saying a player has worked hard, which he did.

Just got back in from the game and thought it was the proverbial "game of two halves". Least said about the first half the better, but the change to 4-2-3-1 worked and we were unlucky not to get something out of the game. I ,like many round me, stayed and clapped the team off because I thought they deserved it tonight.
Even though we were much better in the 2nd half, there were still a couple of things that puzzled me. Early in the 2nd half, Gabby absolutely skinned their RB, but then proceeded to move inside for the rest of the half leaving us no wide option on the left. Also,we played some good football in the 2nd half and caused them real problems, yet towards the end, we reverted back to hoofing it long towards Benteke and looked worse as a result. I really don't know why we do that, as it just doesn't work.
Finally I tuned in to 1152 AM on the way back (not even sure what the station is called now) and was getting really wound up with Tom Ross and Pat Heard going on about playing 4-4-2. Heard has been going on about it for weeks, but was really on one tonight. I tried to phone up because I really wanted to ask the pair of them how they thought 4-4-2 is going to work when we have no real natural wingers at the club. Couldn't get through unfortunately.
-
Just back, game was lost as soon as Lambert sent the team out with that fucking 3-4-1-2 formation. It doesn't work, we don't have the players to make it work & the players don't believe in it either.
That incoherent twat should be sacked for the tactical incompetence of putting a team out, yet again, with a formation that will never work & effectivley hands the game to the opposition.
I can't fault the players for their 2nd half efforts.
-
Is Lambert completely deluded.
Standing Ovaation at the end oof the game ?
Did anyway else bar the manager see this ?
Presumably he means people were clapping as they got up and walked away from the ground. Not exactly a standing ovation.
-
Oh yeah and well done to the H&V scouts on here who have been raving about Sissoko - the kid looks a real player!!

The Newcastle fans were ecstatic.
-
I wonder what he says to Mrs Lambert when he gets in at night? Presumably something along the lines of 'Has my Glasses Direct order arrived yet?'
-
Sorry if i was harsh on bannan, i am deeply depressed tonight after this defeat !
No need to be sorry, he only came to life when there was no pressure on him in the second half.
-
It was clear to me that the players were so frightened of making mistakes in the 1st half and losing the match, that the passing went to pieces. I doubt if I have seen so many half hit passes to players that were in worst positions than the player with the ball. How many times did Lowton and Bennett have the ball passed behind them instead of in front of them with Newcastle players marking them. How many times did players choose the wrong pass or try over ambitious long passes. How many times did our players just want to get rid of the ball. That is mainly down to the pressure of the occasion.
The first goal was the result of Baker ball watching and allowing Cisse to get behind him onto the through ball. In fact, Baker had a nightmare 30 minutes in the 1st half. The 2nd goal was as a result of not defending the edge of the penalty area. What is it with Villa, for years we have conceded goals like this because we fail to put 2 players either side of the 'D' and about 10 yards outside the area.
Quite a few have commented about playing 5 at the back. What I saw was 3 at the back and two fullbacks pushed forward, both of whom do not look to have the pace to play wing back.
Although Newcastle dominated the 1st half, we did not look so uncomfortable at the back compared with recent games. The only player that looked ok in the 1st half was N'Zogbia.
The changes at half time made a difference for the first 20 minutes but then Gabby faded badly. Also, the changes did not suit N'Zogbia and he looked lost in the 2nd half as he did not have the freedom of the 1st half. The formation 2nd half looked to be more 4-2-4 than 4-4-2 and once that early energy went, we became predictable.
Somebody else mentioned about Benteke in the last 15 minutes and I thought he tried to do too much on his own when there were players in far better positions that he could have knocked the ball back to. As a matter of interest, if he had missed the penalty, would the referee have had the kick retaken because their 'keeper was moving around as though he had a pogo stick stuck up his arse.
-

I wouldn't have called it a standing ovation, but there were a fair few in the lower North Stand who stayed to clap the players off.
-

Same here. There's fourteen (?) games left to play, we've just got to keep digging deep. It is far too early to give up!
Although there are lots on here predicting relegation, I'm sure they will be at the next match wanting a Villa win. But I don't know how us digging deep will stop the actions on and off the pitch beyond out control.
The worst thing you can do when you are down there is gift your rivals points. Wigan have shown you can survive after atrocious losses and GD but if you don't take points from around you, it then means trying to get them from better teams battling for the top prize. Swap the results from Wigan and Liverpool matches around, and suddenly we are out the relegation zone. Take 6 off Southampton and we look quite comfortable.
-
The 352 formation has to go
If its proper 352 than it may be ok but the problem is that in the first half it was 5212 with vast open space out wide when we attacked.
-
As long as he doesn't come off the line no.
-
Back home. Right now only hope is to clutch at straws. May have different perspective tomorrow.

I will reserve judgement until he is playing against Midfielders who didn't make Bradford and Millwall midfield look good.

Just got back from what is probably my last appearance at VP this season. I'm fed up of 2.5 hr round trip and leaving VP to the sound of away fans rejoicing. TBH, we are down since no team can lose to Wigan, Saints and Newcastle at home inside a month and expect to get points from other fixtures. If you can't beat the teams that are just as shit as you then what's the point?
As for tonight, I think PL carries the can for the inept formation, which effectively meant we played 2 in midfield. Why play a back 5 when our FBs don't cross the halfway line? It also invited their FBs on meaning when BB or AW tried to close them down they were able to play it inside to the unmarked midfielder. Why we had to wait to go 2-0 to change it is beyond me. I also feel a bit for Bent. From my seat in the North Stand he had some nice touches and chased about and showed a lot more than Benteke who apart from his pen was poor imo. Poor lay offs, not jumping for headers, rarely closing down, etc. The team is crying out for width, A) to give us options on the ball and B) to prevent the opposition attacking with ease. What I don't understand is why I can see it yet PL cannot.
We desperately need a midfielder. That Sissoko (sp?) would have been just the ticket but hey ho. Doomed best sums it up!

Sorry if i was harsh on bannan, i am deeply depressed tonight after this defeat !
No need to be sorry, he only came to life when there was no pressure on him in the second half.
Yes, to be fair you would have to say or do something pretty extreme for it to be harsh on that little turd.

That's hardly an apostrophe. More a miniscule stain.
-
Just got back home from the match, apologies but have not read through the thread but have just switched on Sky and they are reviewing the goals from the game. Newcastle's first goal is marginally offside, the freeze frame at the time Sissoko makes the pass shows that Cisse's right leg is offside. The assistant ref has missed it because he is not in line with the last defender but is a yard in front, shitty officials cost us again on that goal.

It didn't arise from excitement.

They omitted a crucial apostrophe aswell.
Did they?

From what I heard on the radio, Villa's defence stopped because they thought it was a free kick to Newcastle. If that was the case then they pretty much deserved to concede.

A quick question for those who watched the game online or on TV - first half Benteke went down the left, crossed on the floor and Coloccini who had already gone to ground, looked like he definitely handled the ball from where I was sat in the North Stand. Was it a penalty? Thought Mike Dean was rubbish tonight.
-
Well goodnight everyone.
Half bottle of scotch and a new liver since getting home from the game.
That's what Villa do to me.
See you all in the Championship friends.

It wasn't from the North Stand below me.

Pat Murphy interviewed Lambert whilst I was on the way back down the M5 after the match. When Pat suggested the system he played in the 1st half was all wrong, Lambert replied "It's nothing to do with systems". What?! When he suggested the Villa are in a fight (to avoid relegation), Lambert replied "You're in a fight". Not "I'm in a fight" or "We're in a fight" but "You're in a fight"!! Blind, Clueless, Spineless, Useless Bastard!!!
It's that sort of attitude that makes me actually hate him.
It's a turn of phrase. Don't get upset about it. It's a Scottish "you're" meaning "we". Not just Scottish.
I often say "you" meaning "I" or "we" in conversations.
It's hardly rare.
He should go though.

There were two Lee - one which came at him chest high which definitely wasn't, but the one before that when he was on the floor looked very dubious.

The 2nd half rally doesn't excuse that pathetic 1st 45 mins. You'd think we were playing Juventus.
Down and have accepted the fact.

Pinochio on SSN and BBC text both reckoned it was chest and would have been harsh if pen was awarded

They did not replay the incident from behind the goal. It was not clear from the normal camera angle.

You see this is what annoys me about the grief refs and linesmen get. You say yourself that it was marginal. This after having replays and a FREEZEFRAME to view.
Even if the assistant was in line, it would have been an outstanding effort to get it right. Yes technically an error, but only the same as a cricket umpire giving a batsmen out when a centremetre of the ball pitched outside leg stump, hardly shitty decision. Not one person would have commended him if he had flagged.
The game itself was worrying in the extreme. First half we were a complete non entity and a top half side would have been 4 up. Lambert cannot seriously think that a two man midfield as weak physically as Bannan and Westwood can stem the flow.
First 15 of the second were good, with Gabby terrorising their right back and the team playing with real width. After that there was plenty of effort and a good tempo, but little in the way of real quality.
I think we'll go down, as I think we won't do the necessary to halt the slide (good defender and strong midfielder). Thats the incredibly frustrating part.
-
I could see after only 5 minutes of the game that our formation was wrong and needed changing. Their two wide forwards prevented Bennett and Lowton from pushing onto their full back everytime Krul threw the ball out to the fullback. This meant that either Bannan or Westwood went to the ball meaning we were outnumbered in midfield. Their second goal actually came as Lambert was changing it, unfortunately N'Zogbia was the last to be told of the change and where Cabaye struck the ball from a right midfielder would have been have been in the 4-4-2.
Credit to Lambert where due he made the right changes at half time, we desperately needed to match up the formation and he did. He should however have done that in the first half.
Bannan again showed what a lightweight liability he is, often caught in possession of the ball and unable to make any real kind of physical challenge or show any physical prescence. I really like Westwood, I think he's a very decent player but the guy is going to get destroyed if he has to play with Bannan every week.
I'm really proud of the way the fans didn't turn, we have a reputation as being a bunch of whinging tossers but today we really stuck with the team and we almost got a point. We can't expect to get points though when we can only perform for 45 minutes, we simply aren't good enough to do that.
-
No doubt some will say it was ok because we of the second half.
Plenty of people have been slagging Lambert for not playing Bent. So he plays him and gets slated. There are times when, whatever he does, unless it works perfectly someone will give him stick.
Just what I was thinking after dropping in, half way through, this thread.

Must be some distant village in Worcestershire you live in if it is a 2.5hr roundtrip for you. I come down from Sheffield every home game and even from there its only a 3 hr round trip.!!
-
We could have had Messi and Falcao up front first half and never had a sniff of goal. The problem wasn't picking Bent, it was using a formation where we were going to have no possession.

Lamberts post match was odd.
He said you cant hide behind systems and formations when asked about the poor first half.
Just about anyone who saw that first half would say the formation directly contributed to it being so atrocious.

Sorry Eastie just calling the game as I saw it on the replay, it is an offside goal. I was at the match so I know only too well that Lambert got the system wrong at kick off, I presume you needed the radio commentators to tell you that. We all know you do not need five at the back to mark one striker.

No, I'm sure you're right. But it's scant consolation given the general cock-up in defence.
-
Can hardly blame the officials for missing something if you had to freeze frame it to see his leg was offside. I'm all for giving them stick when they feck up but that seems a tad harsh.

Yes but they are very well paid professionals who are there to get the major decisions correct. He was not even positioned correctly on the line, not in line with the last defender, that i'm afraid is not excusable at this level and it is that error which leads to his failure to spot the offside. Root cause analysis my friend.

Paul Lambert bemoaned the fact Villa "never got going" in the first half - but admitted he was encouraged after watching their "relentless" attacking display after the break.
Lambert was delighted to see the crowd rise to applaud the players off at the final whistle, despite the 2-1 loss to Newcastle.
He was encouraged himself with the effort and endeavour during the final 45 minutes although he is more than aware that his team must show that dynamism throughout from now until the end of the season as they look to move away from the danger zone.
He said: "We never got going at all in the first half.
"In the second half? That's the way to play football.
"The first goal was really disappointing. The second goal sometimes you can't stop them, it's a terrific strike but then it's an uphill battle. But second half I couldn't fault them.
"You can't play like we did in the first half and then play like that in the second half. They were bang at it. But you have to start like that. But we never started.
"The onus is on home team to get the win and you have to come out of blocks, especially at home.
"If things don't go your way, people don't want to make mistakes, people want to play the safe pass.
"We have to come out of the traps. The last ones where we started were West Brom and Bradford. In those we started pretty decent.
"You can't give anyone a two-goal start. It was night and day - first and second half.
"I thought we were too deep in the first-half. We were too deep and too reserved with our passing.
"In the second half that was totally different.
"Andi had a virus that dragged him down beforehand. It took the strength away from him. I wanted to ease him back into it.
"Him and Gabby came on and gave it a big lift. The crowd drove it on, the lads took the confidence from it, they got the goal. It just seemed relentless after that.
"And that's the first time I have seen a standing ovation when you have been beat, especially at home. I am not sure I have seen that. It was an incredible thing."
On the injury front, Lambert revealed Fabian Delph could be in contention for Everton while it's a waiting game with Richard Dunne who may have suffered a set-back from his groin/hip injury issues.
He added: "Fabian has a sprained ankle. It's the same ankle he hurt against West Brom and Millwall. He might train in the latter half of the week hopefully.
"With Richard it looks like he's got a setback. We will have to wait and see the next few days if that settles down again. He trained on Monday. But he came in this morning and felt something."

Great work by (I'm assuming) Brigada.

Player of the match was the Newcastle GK.
Not for me. Sissoko IMHO.
he was excellent first half. Sissy I mean

Lambert is a bullshiter, standing ovation.I didn't see or hear one.
-
I saw a few people in the Trinity standing and clapping them off.
and a few more nearer the tunnel.
But I always thought that was just par for the course.
Most of us just headed straight for the exits.
-
well thats the thing with standing ovations - its normally the majority doing it. otherwise its just some nutters. Mebbe he was looking at the away end.

It must have seemed like one, compared to what he usually gets.

There were a lot of people in the Holte who stood and applauded the players off. Admittedly they were standing because they were heading for the exits but from what I could see most of the congregation was applauding. Lambert came over and applauded the Holte back.

with getting to the stairs and out as quick as I could!

First half amongst the worst if not the worst I've ever seen from a Villa side. The lack of quality is one thing but the utter defeatism was something else entirely to behold. Awful.
Second half was improved, we at least got in their faces and gave it a good go and you could construct a legitimate argument that we deserved to take something from the game. Admittedly it wasn't full of quality but there was commitment, tempo and a fairly basic but semi-effective way of using the players at our disposal. It might not be pretty but if we're to stand any chance of getting out of this its the way we need to go - and Lambert needs to stick to one formation too. Weimann has to play.
The infinitely frustrating thing remains that if you added a commanding centre half and midfielder to that team I'm sure we'd be OK. But that's hardly a revelation to anyone and I'm bloody sick of talking about it.
-
Standing ovation ? We did lose to a shit team who had not won away all season did'nt we or did i miss something .

Standing ovation ? We did lose to a shit team who had not won away all season did'nt we or did i miss something .
Hes trying to keep the fans onside which makes sense for someone in his position. It dosent matter what really happened, all that counts is what people believe and announcing Villa recieved a standing ovation in the national press will result in most people thinking that we did. If he starts to complain about fans giving him or the team stick he will lose support very quickly. When managers start complaining about the clubs supporters they are usually on their way out.

I think its more to do with the players....play poorly like in the first half and you get booed off, play well and you receive standing ovations. A little bit of psychology....

A few thoughts.
1. The second half WAS improved but unlike so many on here I have no confidence based on recent experience that the manager or the pkayers can/will recreate this in oyr nect game.
2. Although improved it still for me owed to much to some passion (not enough if thst of late) and hopeful long ball for Benteke's strength or Gabby' s psce. After the first couple of instances even Newcastle sussed thus and dealt with it
3. Bent. The wrong choice not because I havent seen him look remotely interested in aVilla shirt in the last 18 months but because the set up just didnt favour his style and Lambert - in tjus game or any other - doesnt look inclined to plsy a formation thst does. He should have been sold on Jan 1 to fund tge well documented desperate needs
4. Despite everything I have always believed we would not go down and thst how ever bad we were there were three worse teans who would bail us out. After the last three home games I no longer have these delusions. Whats worse is I now fear we will go down bottom. How did our chairmen and a succession of managers dismantle our club so completely
5. Steven Taylor. No Villa player should have needed to take action. This is ungentlemany conduc/unsporting behaviour and a clesr yelliw card. The fact that neither Mike Dean or his linesman thought so suggests that even they think nothing can save us
I live in hope and wil be back for West Ham but since Wigan have felt that unless we change the manager ir the players we would go down. We look like doing neither so.........
-
Disappointing result, thought on the balance of the game we deserved a point but no doubt we were thoroughly outplayed both on the pitch and on the sideline in the first half. Brian Little was co-commentator and he kept saying from early on that Bannan and Westwood were getting thoroughly outplayed in the midfield. There was no need to go with 3 centre halves and the weakest area of the team by far (centre midfield) was left like lambs to the slaughter as a result. I think just before the second goal he moved Baker to left back but it was crucial. Did our best in the second half but with Weimann limping and Gabby fizzling out I never felt confident we would get a second. At least playing with 3 up top kept their previously dominant full backs occupied but despite the best efforts of Clark in particular who drove the ball forward into midfield continuously, the lack of a full back who could cross the ball left Gabby and Weimann a bit more isolated as the half wore on. Lowton really needs to improve on this aspect of his game. Thought Clark, Nzogbia and Benteke did well as did the 2 subs. Baker's lack of footballing skills were exposed continuously at full back though he tried his best. The 2 in midfield improved naturally as Newcastle retreated but Bannan just ain't good enough and Westwood ideally wouldn't be starting either but 3rd choice. As the chopping and changing at left back has indicated none of the 4 options are good enough. With Dunne injured again and Vlaar not exactly back to his best, a centre back on loan is desperately required. Midfield we need one decent player with steel and grit. Unless Bent can be traded (thought he was lively enough to be fair) it isn't likely we will be bringing in some decent players. 14 games to go mean all isn't lost and a group of teams above us all sinking. Getting a couple of players in would give us a great chance of staying up and give the players a big lift. Failing that we are f*cked
-
Sitting watching the first half all i could think was that if that team was playing in the Championship now you'd give them no chance of being in the promotion fight. And that's been our problem for the majority of the season. Too often we've looked like a team barely good enough for the Championship.
-

Sorry Eastie just calling the game as I saw it on the replay, it is an offside goal. I was at the match so I know only too well that Lambert got the system wrong at kick off, I presume you needed the radio commentators to tell you that. We all know you do not need five at the back to mark one striker.
Frozen the frame this morning having recorded it late last night and at the moment the ball is passed cisse is onside just , played on by vlaar - and i thought so at the time when i saw it live - as for your radio snide remark, ive listened to one game on the radio in 3 years and that was at millwall.
I dont comment on things unless ive seen them .
-
I put more effort in walking to the ground than Darren Bent, did in his shameful first half performance! £80k a week (supposedly) and could not careless.
The sooner we are rid of him and players with that attitude then the club may progress.
-
Can hardly blame the officials for missing something if you had to freeze frame it to see his leg was offside. I'm all for giving them stick when they feck up but that seems a tad harsh.
No sorry not harsh at all if the lino had been positioned correctly he would have seen it.
He did see it - he was not offside , may i suggest a visit to specsavers or dixons to buy a new tv?
Maybe rather than bleating about the officials you might try blaming your manager and players for losing the game!
-
I think the writing is on the wall. It is going to take something special to keep us up, and I just don't see where it is coming from (I still believe it is going happen, I just can see how, yet).
-
We were all over them in the second half. We did enough then to go and win the game.
It was like the WBA game in reverse, only we lost and should've won.
Also, the ref did fuck all about their continued time wasting, which they did from about 48 minutes onwards.
-
Guess im a poor supporter as being all over them second half and achieving f all means zero points and one step nearer the championship
I agree Dean never appeared to speak to them about timwe wasting but we got 5 extra minutes - about as ling as you get.
-
What I dont understand is why the home support havent directed their frustration and anger at Lambert in a very vocal manner. Whether Randy likes it or not Lambert has failed in a way that even Alex McCleish would be pushed to achieve. Its got to the point where I dread him
being interviewed by Sky. Apart from the fact that being interviewed is not his forte he doesnt say anything remotely interesting about anything. Not something you would ever accuse Arry of. Also he doesnt appear to have a sense of humour which doesnt enamour him to the viewing public.
That first half was shocking even by our shocking standards. I dont think anything will be done at all and we will be relegated. Obviously Benteke will go and Bent may go in this window to a club that will provide him with the service he needs to score goals. Perhaps even Weimann will move on as well.
Each week we seem to reach a lower point of performance.
The buck stops with Lambert and his awful training staff
Gentlemen (and Lizz) we have been conned.

I don't get this. Bent was given sweet FA service tbh. He can't just magic up goals .

Well, Championship football will be at Villa Park next season, last night was the final nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned.
What bothers me is that last night was a home game, yet our mentality was to act as the away team for the first half, why? I seriously don't think that was Lambert's game plan at all. The players need some sort of sports pyschologist to stop us being a one half team as this has been a mental issue for us even back in the MON days. We only attacked in the second half because A. We had to & B. Newcastle were comfortably winning
What we need to do is have the mentality to want to play that way throughout the full 90 mins. In other games I see you get either complete dominance from one team or it's 50/50 to a degree where each team has spells of 10-20 minutes with the upper hand. Our games are so very different to these & I firmly beleive it's down to a poor mentality with our players which needs adressing urgently.

The 3 centre backs will never work because they're not good enough. They're not positionally good enough at all. If you have two you at least know your job and also our midfield doesn't get overrun.
-
Lambert is a fool. To play that system...
I think we will go down and I think we will finish bottom. I cannot believe that we are not going to buy/loan and improve that squad. To hear Redknapp and Martinez say they are going to go out and do something to stay in the league, while we do nothing is a joke. This is Aston Villa for fucks sake. We are bigger than QPR and Wigan, combined, ten times over and we cannot afford to do anything?
Act like a Championship side and you will soon become one.
We have a manager that organises like one too. The time to sack him was weeks ago. The man is a bafoon that makes the previous manager look dynamic.
The second half was much better. We played with players knowing their role and with width for the first time this season. The pace on our left murdered their full back second half.
We actually created a lot of good chances for once and probably should have picked up at least a point.
We didn't and there is only one man to blame. Paul Lambert; worse than McNeill, worse than Turner and worse than McLiesh.
Everton and Arsenal away and Man City at home in the next four. We have no chance of winning the five/six more games we need to. Six goals conceded and one in reply in three home games the might of Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle. We are truly awful and will (not if anymore, hope is dead) be relegated.
Lerner and Faulkner share the bafoon status. We are appallingly run.
I dreamt last night that we won 9 out of first 10 in the Championship. We drew with Blackpool, but smashed Barnsley, Leeds, Boro, Leicester, Derby, Wolves, Sheffield Utd, SHA and Watford. That was a dream, as this side will struggle in the Mickey Mouse league.
It gets worse. If the fool Lerner is not willing to spend to stay in the league, then with income dramatically slashed, what chance is there of him spending any in the Mickey Mouse league?
What an awful future we face.
-
Were 33/1 with Paddy Power to get relegated next season in the Championship. I can't believe I'm tempted...

Agreed , im not even sure vlaar is as good as others seem to think , hes just better than the other two thats all.

Vlaar's decent enough and he was last night. Baker was the worst at centre back by a mile last night, he was constantly out of position and cost us the first goal.

Badly at fault for the bradford goal, and played cisse on for his goal last night but maybe your right - probably a bit rusty from his lay off - i am maybe being harsh.
Ive been fortunate to see some world class defenders playing for us down the years and seeing these back three is very depressing.
-
we were shapless tut last night.... for 45 minutes. yet Nzog could have got us back to 1-1 with a wonder shot, and Dean missed what looked like a handball that stopped a good chance. Dean who ran back to the halfway line pumping his arms when Newcastle scored their first goal and was congratulated by Krul. It looked like offside to me, but im not in line with play there. Second half we were much much better. Everyone upped their game and a second goal for us looked the more likely outcome. I was pretty disappointed with the Newcastle players. The fact that two players accused Bannan of bad tackles made me laugh, we all know he hasnt tackled a player in three years. What a bunch of falling down cheating pansies they are. The way they played in the second half, they could still figure out in the bottom three
-
Trying to be positive.....as we all know the first half was just wrong - wrong formation and the inclusion of Bent wrong. The flat back 5 just invited them onto us and so no surprise to concede again.
For once we performed in the second half and the changes and teamtalk worked. Weimann is essential to any hopes we have and if PL was protecting hom then fair enough. Gabby - fantastic wide and skinning their fullback for fun. CNZ, obviously only performs in a relegation battle and looks like the player we though he was. Bannan was Bannan - 2 great passes and 3 wasted ones. I still like Westwood, there is a good player in there. Looked as if we could turn it round.....
Why then did Gabby move inside? Tactical or thoughtless? This is when we started lumping it and the chances of a comeback gone. Shame.
Thought the Geordies 'gamesmanship' was appalling but they won the game. At least the card count showed that we had a go for once and if we can press teams and remain aggressive as we were second half (and when we were performing better pre-Xmas), then we have a chance. Sissoko is a beast and we could do with one like that.
We can still get out of this....UTV
-
I saw a few people in the Trinity standing and clapping them off.
and a few more nearer the tunnel.
But I always thought that was just par for the course.
Most of us just headed straight for the exits.
There were a lot of people in the Holte who stood and applauded the players off. Admittedly they were standing because they were heading for the exits but from what I could see most of the congregation was applauding. Lambert came over and applauded the Holte back.
I was one of them clapping them off from the Holte. We did everything but equalise in the second half. We played well. Did enough to win it in my eyes.

Agree about Gabby, he was killing their fullback every time. Then it looked like he moved position.

Uggh!Sad Sad Sad!!

My report on last night. The rest is available through the link:
"However you describe the events at Villa Park tonight, it stil means no points when Aston Villa could have done with three. In fact, it was a match that was representative of Villa’s season as a whole: 45-minute warriors, world champions of the one- half performance..."

Me too, despite the disappointment of the result. The second half performance at least gave us something to cheer. How far our expectations have fallen...
-
Fucking hell I'm sitting here agreeing totally with Phil Thompson, what is going on?!?!
Because the problems are so simple to solve even he can spot them. Pity our manager can't...........
Phil Thompson was one we sadly missed out on during Houlliers reign - talks total sense most of the time and has a history of success as a player.
-
I applauded the second half effort if anything. It's as if they sat there in the dressing room at half time and realisation finally set in that we are in trouble.

Yes but sadly it's probably too late. It's also massively alarming that Lambert doesn't think the 'system' in the first half was a major issue.
-
Maybe he might now stick with Gabby and Andi out wide it made us far more potent. They would do really well in the Championship.

Tactically he dose'nt seem the sharpest tool in the box.

Weimann got an injury last night. Have to hope he will be back for Everton.

Anyone who makes a virtue of applause for a losing performance is well into Lenny Lawrence territory.
He has two days to pull his charmless, inflexible Scottish thumb out of his arse and sign the two competent players we need.

Agreed. Bollocks to trying to pull positives out of the second half, we lost that's all the matters. We've had several games where we've performed well in one half and fucking absymally in the other half and lost loads of points. Nothing matters other than winning games now, and the reality is we lost to a relegation rival like we have several times this season. You've got two days Lambert to get a fucking clue and sort it out.
-

Funny you should say this, this is exactly what I thought also

Erm, about this second half performance. We scored once from a soft penalty and resorted to hoof ball. Plenty of huff, puff and gusto, but no guile or composure in the final third. We cannot resort to measuring our satisfaction with performances by the honourable manner of defeat. 4 straight home defeats (3 to the dross around us) does not deserve the licking of Lambert's arse.

I think nearly everyone is saying that the second half really doesn't matter, because the result was the important thing and the first half was so dreadful. Noone is 'licking Lambert's arse'.
-
I don't disagree that we played well. I don't even disagree that we ought to take some heart from the fact that our players finally realise they're in the shit.
I just refuse to let Lambert interpret that applause as a justification for anything he has done.
-
We are in the place we were with O'Leary, with TSM, and briefly with McAllister. We have to collectively ignore the manager and support the players. It is all we can do.
-

We're in a much worse place now than we ever were under O'Leary and McLeish. We're not cut off at the bottom of the league by any means, but the team we have now is much much worse than any of the dross those two ever served up.
-
I don't agree. I think there are five wins in that team if they believe in themselves.
-
I think the thing about the first half formation that summed it up for me was just before half time when we conceded a free kick in the centre of our "D". Who conceded it? Lowton. Who was supposed to be playing either wide right back or right wing back. So what the bloody hell was he doing in the centre of the field? Clark or Vlaar should have shouted at him to get out of the way and leave the centre to them. Instead he is in there and therefore the Newcastle left side was given the freedom of the park.
This incident summed up for me that they have no tactical awareness and makes you wonder what the level of coaching is that they are given each day at BH.

Just as they can have no complaints about the half time reaction I don't see anything wrong with a bit of encouragement for their second half efforts. There'll be time enough at the end of the season for finger pointing and recriminations.
It is massively frustrating though. One week we start well only to go to pot in the second half, another week it's a terrible first half followed by a good performance after the break. One of these days we're going to put it all together and be shit for the whole 90 minutes.
-
Just got back home from the match, apologies but have not read through the thread but have just switched on Sky and they are reviewing the goals from the game. Newcastle's first goal is marginally offside, the freeze frame at the time Sissoko makes the pass shows that Cisse's right leg is offside. The assistant ref has missed it because he is not in line with the last defender but is a yard in front, shitty officials cost us again on that goal.
Bpllocks - lambert cost us the game not the officials!

Sorry mate we will have to agree to disagree the replay I saw on Sky shows the lino in the wrong position and Cisse (R leg) in an offside position albeit very marginal but technically offside. Mate the Lino didn't give it because he though it was onside because he was too far advanced up the pitch and not looking directly along the line of our last defender. I apologise if my "radio" remark upset you its just that your comment came across as from somebody who was not at the game.

I hope the bloke Sky assign to covering transfer deadline has got a stash of games to play, books to read or DVDs to watch to keep him busy.

Touche mate, his right leg is offside, the lino is three feet in advance of the last defender so can't see it properly because of the distorted angle. I don't need an eye test, I have one of the best TV's thanks (Panasonic Plasma) and if you buy your TV's from Dixons then I suggest it's you who needs the eye test as Dixons wouldn't know how to display a TV correctly if they tried. May I suggest you get off the Manager's and Players backs, stop bleating on these boards and lets see some posts from you in support of the team going forward. e all want the team to survive in the Prem together we are stronger.

The team have my full support - i have again frozen the screen and still say not offside -very marginal decision and i have no complaints about the goal regarding the officials.
I agree we all want survival and believe we are behind the players in their quest .
Regarding mr lambert - no !

As far as I can gather there is one person debating perhaps the most marginal offside decision, it's involved several freeze frames and no doubt lots of fancy graphics on Sky before the decision has been made that a bit of a players leg was offside. Even Lambert isn't blaming the loss on a supposed offside goal. Unless the linesmen or whatever they are called these days are superhuman with vision like no other man, woman or beast how the bloody hell are they supposed to spot part of a leg that is minimally 'offside'?
As far as I can gather Villa lost last night because in the first half they were utterly and completely shit.

If you ask Ferguson its 90 + however long it takes for them to score the winner, we just play until the other team score and then generaly give it up

can someone tell our manager and payers what football is? fuck the 90 minutes

Can`t we offer Ireland to Stoke on a free - its closer to Manchester so he wouldn`t have to spend so much on fuel for his umpteen cars

Where were the fans? My son and I were sat next to 4 empty seats on my right and 7 on my left! I couldn't believe for a match this important nobody was there. Pathetic. Need to get rid these part time villa supporters as well. Can't complain at losing to the zebras. We laughed at them when they went down (I don't know why there's such bad feeling) and they were laughing at us last night.

Hang on, you're moaning about the empty seats but then say we need to get rid of fans. Sounds like you've already got what you wanted.
-
I suppose what I'm moaning about is that I thought we had good fans and it turns out we don't. We're better off without them but still it's shocking to see.
-
There's only so much the fans can go through. You can't expect people to throw money, which many can ill afford on a club that doesn't seem to care about its fans or its own future. It's a two way street.

the fans are loyal but the team is lacking The Xfactor! ( pun intended)
-
I suppose you're right but there is a bit of me knows the rest of league are laughing at us - just like we did when west brom went down and when newcastle went down at our place. felt a bit sick last night knowing we'd mocked them and this is how it feels.
-

You mean we should get rid of those fans who went last night but don't always go to every game?
or should we get rid of the fans that weren't there last night?
then you can moan about nobody being there?
Idiot

Less of the name calling please.

What an absurd thing to say, why would you possibly want to get rid of fans who (like myself these days) cannot afford to attend every game and therefore only attend some of them?

the problem is, its not really a choice. I mean you can or cant go, but to go to live football, its Villa or nothing. I was rough as rats yesterday, and drove through shite weather to see my team play. We were gash for 45 minutes, but then entertaining for the final 45 minutes. Not going generally means that you miss seeing your team. Thats who it hurts. Staying away may mean you save cash which I understand and ultimately is the factor that will stop me going, not which league we are in. If it was a choice about successful teams, id be at Eastlands last year, old trafford this year, at Villa in three years time. As it stands Ill just keep going to Villa. And hope that it fucking clicks and we get some fucking points on the bastard board. You cant cure that either. Even when you know your going to lose, there is a nagging little (usually lying) voice saying "We can take these"

I suppose what I'm moaning about is that I thought we had good fans and it turns out we don't. We're better off without them but still it's shocking to see.
How long have you been going down? It was not that long ago that if we got 20,000 we were doing well.
I would say that last nights 29K Villa fans [plus away support to make the 30,300] is about our level of regular attendees for a mid week match. We like any other team have those that attend all the time, those that attend when they can, those that attend because of who we are playing and those that only attend when we are doing well.
You also have to take into account the time of the match, its followed quite a few other home games and the financial situation of allot of our supporters.

What did you see? So the second half roaring them on didn't happen then?

I had a season ticket for 20 odd years, but having become a dad and getting a mortgage recently I simply cannot afford to go to every single game. That is a wrench for me but ultimately it was a necessary sacrifice. I still go whenever I can and have only missed 4 so far this season.
The desire to watch them live has never waned and never will for me but like it or not watching live football is an expensive game nowadays.
That doesn't make the current situation hurt any less.

The problem is, even the impostors on here don't stand out that much any more.
-
Where were the fans? My son and I were sat next to 4 empty seats on my right and 7 on my left!
Is there something your best friend won't tell you?
-
OK when I said son I really meant George Osborn.

Or Louis Walsh?

Just for the record-I never laughed when Newcastle went down or Albion-not even a small titter for Coventry and Wolves. You always have to think what it might be like or remember what it was like.
It makes me wince now as the whole thing about relegation since the Preeemiership means a lot more than it used to, but I am with those who have said it won't stop me going, not that I go every week.
-
I didn't laugh either, I just sort of gawped, like a yokel at an eighteenth-century freak show. It was diverting

Need to get rid these part time villa supporters as well. Can't complain at losing to the zebras. We laughed at them when they went down (I don't know why there's such bad feeling) and they were laughing at us last night.
Like we give a fuck.
Blarting fat geordie ****** on the news is always fun.
-
I must admit that I pissed myself when newcastle went. It was cause for a night out. I tried to explore in the pub with them last night why they blame us rather than 37 games prior as a contributing factor. They couldn't really answer.

Anyone who makes a virtue of applause for a losing performance is well into Lenny Lawrence territory.
He has two days to pull his charmless, inflexible Scottish thumb out of his arse and sign the two competent players we need.
Sorry, but that's bollocks. If you're shit, then you're entitled to moan, but, on the same hand, if you're good, then you're entitled to clap and praise.
They rightly got booed off at half-time and rightly clapped off at the end of the match.
Too many people down Villa are quick to moan at players for the slightest thing they do wrong yet do not do anything when a player does something well. I'm not just talking about last night or the last season or even three seasons. It's always gone on down the Villa. Even when we've been doing well, the slightest error by someone and people are on their back. How about a bit of praise sometime?
If you're constantly told you're shit, you eventually start to believe it and panic when you've got the ball. If you're praised for doing something right, then it makes you want to do those things more often.
This is why we need "applause". If you were there, you would've seen we controlled the second half and should've gone on to win. That is what people were applauding.
-
How do you know he wasn't?

How do you know he wasn't?
I don't. I was commenting that if he was there he would've seen it, in which case, how could he not applaud that?
-
I was there. I saw a far better second half than the first, but with no real end-product apart from in the first ten minutes or so. I walked out when the final whistle blew in not a very good mood.

Coming off the back of the previous run of home games, I think it was only right that the players recieved an appreciation of what they did in the second half, if only to try and motivate them in the only way we can.

Sounds like the average press conference.
