The 3 centre backs will never work because they're not good enough. They're not positionally good enough at all. If you have two you at least know your job and also our midfield doesn't get overrun.

Agreed , im not even sure vlaar is as good as others seem to think , hes just better than the other two thats all.

Were 33/1 with Paddy Power to get relegated next season in the Championship. I can't believe I'm tempted...

I think we will finish between 12th and 15th in the championship.

Vlaar's decent enough and he was last night. Baker was the worst at centre back by a mile last night, he was constantly out of position and cost us the first goal.

Badly at fault for the bradford  goal, and played cisse on for his goal last night but maybe your right - probably a bit rusty from his lay off - i am maybe being harsh.

Ive been fortunate to see some world class defenders playing for us down the years and seeing these back three is very depressing.

we were shapless tut last night.... for 45 minutes.  yet Nzog could have got us back to 1-1 with a wonder shot, and Dean missed what looked like a handball that stopped a good chance.  Dean who ran back to the halfway line pumping his arms when Newcastle scored their first goal and was congratulated by Krul.  It looked like offside to me, but im not in line with play there.  Second half we were much much better.  Everyone upped their game and a second goal for us looked the more likely outcome.  I was pretty disappointed with the Newcastle players.  The fact that two players accused Bannan of bad tackles made me laugh, we all know he hasnt tackled a player in three years.  What a bunch of falling down cheating pansies they are.  The way they played in the second half, they could still figure out in the bottom three

Trying to be positive.....as we all know the first half was just wrong - wrong formation and the inclusion of Bent wrong. The flat back 5 just invited them onto us and so no surprise to concede again.

For once we performed in the second half and the changes and teamtalk worked. Weimann is essential to any hopes we have and if PL was protecting hom then fair enough. Gabby - fantastic wide and skinning their fullback for fun. CNZ, obviously only performs in a relegation battle and looks like the player we though he was. Bannan was Bannan - 2 great passes and 3 wasted ones. I still like Westwood, there is a good player in there. Looked as if we could turn it round.....

Why then did Gabby move inside? Tactical or thoughtless? This is when we started lumping it and the chances of a comeback gone. Shame.

Thought the Geordies 'gamesmanship' was appalling but they won the game. At least the card count showed that we had a go for once and if we can press teams and remain aggressive as we were second half (and when we were performing better pre-Xmas), then we have a chance. Sissoko is a beast and we could do with one like that.

We can still get out of this....UTV

I saw a few people in the Trinity standing and clapping them off.
and a few more nearer the tunnel.
But I always thought that was just  par for the course.
Most of us just headed straight for the exits.
There were a lot of people in the Holte who stood and applauded the players off.  Admittedly they were standing because they were heading for the exits but from what I could see most of the congregation was applauding.  Lambert came over and applauded the Holte back.

I was one of them clapping them off from the Holte. We did everything but equalise in the second half. We played well. Did enough to win it in my eyes.

Agree about Gabby, he was killing their fullback every time. Then it looked like he moved position.

My report on last night. The rest is available through the link:

"However you describe the events at Villa Park tonight, it stil means no points when Aston Villa could have done with three. In fact, it was a match that was representative of Villa’s season as a whole: 45-minute warriors, world champions of the one- half performance..."

Me too, despite the disappointment of the result.  The second half performance at least gave us something to cheer.  How far our expectations have fallen...

Fucking hell I'm sitting here agreeing totally with Phil Thompson, what is going on?!?!

Because the problems are so simple to solve even he can spot them. Pity our manager can't...........

Phil Thompson was one we sadly missed out on during Houlliers reign - talks total sense most of the time and has a history of success as a player.

I applauded the second half effort if anything. It's as if they sat there in the dressing room at half time and realisation finally set in that we are in trouble.

Yes but sadly it's probably too late. It's also massively alarming that Lambert doesn't think the 'system' in the first half was a major issue.

Maybe he might now stick with Gabby and Andi out wide it made us far more potent.  They would do really well in the Championship.
