Is it a 4-4-2 with Bennett and Albirghton wide right and left?

That looks more 4-5-1.Better balance in midfeild if nothing else.

Title: Re: Swansea City v Aston Villa Match Thread

I'd guess 4-2-3-1 with Bennett left, Weimann central and Albrighton wide right - doesn't seem to fit any other way (unless Weimann's up front with Benteke) with Stevens and Bennett in the team.

I presume it's essentially 442, with herd at cb. Unless he's asking either Bennett or Stevens to play right wing back?! But I assume not, especially as albrighton will presumably play wide right.
Title: Re: Swansea City v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: seanthevillan on January 01, 2013, 02:24:20 PM
I think Holman must be a bit knackered - his energy at least would be useful against Swansea, it was last time. Delph will have to get through a lot of work.
Title: Re: Swansea City v Aston Villa Match Thread

Why did he pick Ireland, Bannan and Homan on Saturday then drop them all today? Constant chopping and changing. No wonder the players have no clue about their roles. Albrighton and Delph were terrible in the last match they started together.

I'd guess Herd is partnering CC in a flat 4. Bennett left MF. No KEA on the bench?

Albie owes us a big performance today.

That's not a team that fills me with confidence.....

I'd guess it's a 4-4-2;

                   Guzan

Lowton    Herd    Clark    Stephens

Albrighton Westwood Delph Bennett

           Benteke  Weimann

Post by: CJ on January 01, 2013, 02:26:17 PM
That looks a really weak team - Clark the only CB in the squad. Guess he'll play Albrighton and Bennett wide in midfield to protect the full backs, and Benteke up top on his own. Very worried now.

I struggle to think of a worse Villa team.  Bennett, Stevens, Albrighton and Delph are all way below Premier League standard.  I think our humiliating run may go on for a while yet.

Has Bennett ever played in midfield before? I would have tried Carruthers rather than albrighton , he's more direct and more confident.

It's definitely another young team, I have no idea if it's the youngest we've put out this season.  The average is 23.34.

09/09/1984   Guzan   28.33
09/06/1989   Lowton   23.58
26/09/1989   Clark   23.28
28/03/1990   Bennett   22.78
04/04/1989   Herd   23.76
05/08/1991   Weimann   21.42
21/11/1989   Delph   23.13
09/07/1990   Stevens   22.50
01/04/1990   Westwood   22.77
03/12/1990   Benteke   22.10
18/11/1989   Albrighton   23.14

On current form it looks terrible, but that's because on current form we're a bit of a rabble.

There's potntial there, and not many alternatives, so let's hope they confound us. It'll take massive performances by the likes of Clark, Westwood and Benteke.

We just have to hope he's short of top performance, because he looks capable of ripping through our team quite easily when he's on song.

In fact, Swansea generally look quite assured, with plenty of movement and no shortage of passing ability. I doubt we'll come out of this one too well.

I can't lose hope before a ball's been kicked but I'm not overflowing with confidence either.  If we can avoid conceding early hopefully they'll grow into the game like they did at Anfield.  I'm expecting Swansea to come out all guns blazing and *hoping* we catch them with a sucker punch on the counter followed by one of the most nervous afternoons in recent memory.

As bad as the team appears, this now comes down to the manager and his ability to organise them, keep them disciplined and try and motivate them.
They need to fight and battle, not give up and show some fucking pride.
They are still representing Aston Villa, and they bloody well better remember that !!

Can't see Bennett playing on the right - think he'll play Stevens at LB with Bennett in front of him and Albrighton in front of Lowton, Delph and Westwood in centre mid, and Weimann behind Benteke.  Guess we'll find out in 15 minutes!

A small crumb of consolation is that Wigan and Soton are at home to Man U and Arsenal respectively.  And Reading are away at Spurs.

So if we can somehow wangle a point today it may see us move up a bit.

I think Bennett has good skill and at the moment, looks better going forward than as part of a defensive unit.
Good luck to the lad. He stopped his car on the way into Villa Park, just before the Swansea home game in September, just to have a chat with my dad, who drunkenly shouted, good luck Joey boy. To his credit, he was friendly, was really chuffed about playing for Villa and talked until security had a word with him to drive into the players car park. It made my dads day.

I hope he goes onto be an excellent player. Good luck today Villa, I think we'll win 3-2 and it will be a nervy but enjoyable afternoon! up the villa, Albrighton to score.

Absolutely right. Can't see any of them getting anything out of their respective matches so hopefully we can pull away with something/anything from this game.

Please score first.

In the 89th minute....we might just be able to hang on then

What a shit line-up. We are like a man who, having just taken a series of massive punches in the face from a guy twice his size and weight, staggers back, reaches into his pocket, and pulls out...a miniature water pistol. With a crack in it. And no water.

Although clark's form has fallen dramatically away, I still come back to some of ridgewell's performances where he was a complete liability especially alongside Cahill and with Davis allegedly protecting him from midfield. There's just too many kids in one side at the same time. We don't have a single outfield player out there with any professional pedigree.its basically the youth team from 2-3 years ago.

We need somebody, anybody with a little bit of experience and influence to be out there. Right now they are all looking around at each other for help and none of them have the ability to provide it. Lambert is accountable for a lot of this but it's really not as though the other available players would make much of a difference.

I don't know if he's doing the best he can, but he can't be happy either. He's been around the game at a high level for long enough to see that this lot are getting battered and what he's not going to want is for it to go so long that they are permanently damaged by this. So with that I really, really hope Randy being in town to see this is going to prompt action that will be decisive.

We didn't pay anything like that for either of those two players. Michu without doubt has been superb but he eluded every major in Europe to wind up at Swansea. That's great scouting but there is a fair degree of luck that a player of that quality goes so cheap and so under the radar. I'm sure his former club with all of their debts are wishing they had got proper market value for him now.

I'm not even confident that Lambert should be given any more money.  He took a team that the hopeless McLeish kept up, and wasted £20m on a stupid experiment of getting loads of kids.  Well, you reap what you sow, and this team is his, and it's getting what it deserves, ie battered.

And thats the problem. Many of these players are damaged now. It started under TSM and has continued this season. A bunch of kids given no fucking guidance or protection by their manager by way of experienced support around them.  Even the players are asking for help, given Holmans interview yesterday.

Fucking hell, that Michu is some player.

£2.2 million. The same as we paid for Westwood, or Bennett.

I'm pretty sure that's the kind of figures given for those two players.

No one thinks good Hilts, just that there is more to it than him to blame solely. We have been the perfect storm of shit management from O'Neill, poor appointments from the board, too much more sanctioned in wages and until this season no coherent plan for how to move the club forward. Unfortunately injuries and under performance of the more seasoned players has turned this season into a real nightmare for all concerned. Lets hope we can get out of it eventually. 2 central defenders and a big hard midfield player are the minimum requirements.

When you see a paper-thin squad like ours being comprehensively outplayed by a side that had until very recently been out of the top flight for thirty years, it's absolutely mystifying that some people persist in thinking that our owner is doing a good job.

Lambert bought these players on a policy of young, cheap with potential. Thats OK when we are in a safe position, but high risk now and with the current injuries we are stuffed.

I'll give you Vlaar but the others?  Gabby has done fuck all for us for several seasons and the only think you can count on him for is unreliability.  Bent wasn't being picked anyway and hasn't done anything to suggest he can play with Benteke, even assuming Lambert wants to do that.  Dunne is a feckless, overweight, unprofessional money-sink and yet he remains the closest thing we have to an experienced Premier League defender.

Very worrying times.

Sorry but there's no reason why they shouldn't  if we defend like this and they are up for it.   If they can score against Arsenal why wouldn;t they against this woeful excuse for a defence?  And even if we "handle our business"  we will need to improve drastically not to endure humiliation at Wembley.

what complete and utter rubbish.

The players Lambert has brought in have, with the possible exception of KEA, shown a lot of promise. Do you really think Lambert wanted these players to play with no experience alongside them?

Our experienced players are injured and we'll struggle till we have some older heads back but nobody could have foreseen the problems we've had, especially in defence this season. We've got young inexperienced kids playing out of position because there's no other option.

It would be sensible to judge Lambert when we've got a full strength side out not an injury ravaged side.

The trouble is, and I'm really not one for chopping and changing managers for the sake of it, that he has had a full summer with money, and we are hakfway through the season, and things appear to be spiralling downwards pretty seriously. Too many of these players are just not good enough.

Run down the squad and invest in almost exclusively lower league players and you get left with a lower league team. It's not really as if the injured players would make much difference, other than Vlaar.

It is the result of a three year long process of penny pinching and neglect.

When you see a paper-thin squad like ours being comprehensively outplayed by a side that had until very recently been out of the top flight for thirty years, it's absolutely mystifying that some people persist in thinking that our owner is doing a good job.
Totally agree, Lambert is getting plenty of stick today, but i think he couldnt pick a much better team with what hes got at his disposal...Lerner is slowly allowing this club to rot, if hes not intrested he should fuck off now!

Lambert bought the kids like Bennett, Westwood and Lowton, plus shite like KEA.  This is his team.
True, but i think lambert bought theses young players to use them as squad players at first, i dont think despite what he says in public, that he wanted to use all the kids at the same time. Its just a sad state out affairs that even teams like Wigan and Swansea have much better experienced squads than us, and thats down the current policy of our owner and his inept chief exec!

But I still think we need a centre back in January whatever the fitness position. I wonder if it would be possible to bring chris samba back from Russia. Or is h on mega bucks?

The 4 bookings are gonna prove crucial. Delph opening his gob, Weimann needlessly kicking ball away are just plain stupid. But last 25 showed some encouraging signs and indeed a good goal great ball over the top Williams fecked it up letting Weimann to finish really well.

Y'know, this business about the kids: they will all have  been in structured junior set-ups for the last 6-8 years, so there is no excuse for losing their shape and playing in such an ill-disciplined way.
I really hope Lambert gets them settled down for the second half: they don;t need to dive in; they don't need to get bent out of shape - they just need to get focussed and work for each other.

The goal could be massive just for their heads. That they can actually score and it's not all about picking the ball out of our own net. It's a lot of very young kids out there, and the upward climb to be a solid pro is a lot steeper than the speed down down the slope when it goes wrong. They need to gradually introduced but they've been thrown in and have taken some proper batterings. Somehow, some way we need to get through this period. Today, could be a massive step. The second half could be as important as any we've played in a long, long while.

bookings all seemed a bit harsh except Weimann if I'm honest, none of the others were dangerous tackles, just a touch late (I'm assuming delph was booked for the tackle a little earlier in the move).  We've given away 9 fouls so we've been booked for a 3rd of them, seems very harsh to me, particularly given that Clark's was for persistent fouling.

I think Clark is over rated and always have done.  He was largely getting away with it while up alongside Vlaar but has been found out badly since.  It's not just him, of course, but he ball watches, gets dragged out of position far too easily and doesn't have the pace to recover.

Unable to perform even the basics in so mant departments. After three terrible performances I can accept lack of confidence, but the frightening widening gulf in quality now being shown is also down to lack of professional application and dare I say poor preparation.
I predicted a loss today and we may avoid that now (even fluke a win here !) but if the level of performance in the second half is anything like that first awful 45 minutes it shows we have become rotten to the core.

I think Clark could be much better as holding midfielder. We need to buy one CB and at least two midfielders because   the only premier league standard midfielder that we have is (or could be in the future) Westwood.

Baker and Vlaar are comfortably better centre backs than Clark, but he is a good midfielder IMO.

Agreed on both points there, I'd say Vlaar and Baker will end up the first choice pairing for us. Benteke and Weimann look plenty decent up front, too. The rest of the team though.......

If we don't have 2 centre backs lined up I would be stunned. Clark is too weak, Baker and Vlaar both injury prone. Need 2.

Two players mid-twenties or higher that have seen some work in the career. Doesn't need to be PL experience, but in a decent league somewhere. Ideally, one with muscles in his hair.

Is Micheal Dawson back in the spurs side?

It's been a much more disciplined second half.

Just thinking that and a lot of that comes with confidence. Every minute that passes by playing against a good team where they are not on the back foot or worse, picking the ball out of the net builds belief. That must be the hardest thing for a young team is to gain and keep confidence. If we can see this out it would be a big, big plus.

Why are there 5?? Is it justified?

If Westwood has a serious one we need 2 sitting midfielders tomorrow morning.

I would have taken a point before the game. Losing Westwood, Clark possibly got a knock, a point is massive away from home.
