Cuellar and Hutton?

5 - 3 - 2 ?

Or Hutton in a defensive midfield role?

What is that? 5-3-2, or is Collins and Herd playing in front of the back 4 in 4-2-3-1 system?

Can't see much point playing Emile in this one, Spurs aren't much of a threat in the air and that's Emile's biggest benefit.  Balckburn away: yes.  Spurs away: hmmm.  Hope he proves me wrong.

Hutton must be playing wide right to double up on Bale.  It makes some sense as he's better going forward.  But, it really is a defensive line up and one devoid of creativity in midfield.

First goal uber important when you send a line up out like this.   Let's hope Gabby continues with his run of form and we get one early.  If we're left chasing the game with this line up it's going to be a long night.

Spurs fans to be singing 'boring boring Villa' if they don't score 3 by half time?

Obviously bolstering the wide area's threat of Bale and Co, makes sense, question is, is he playing Gabby up front with Bent, Gabby will need 2 markers, if he's playing Heskey up front or just of, waist of time in my opinion, Gabby needs to be right up there, and Gabby will want to prove to the next England manager what's in his locker.....

C'mon you Villa boys

Post by: citizenDJ on November 21, 2011, 07:31:27 PM
Well, I for one am expecting us to dominate posession, with dizzying pass-and-move antics, really taking the game to Spurs.

I can't work out if McLeish is doing the right thing in applying a bit of muscle on the right, making the best of the limited options we have in the squad and mixing things up according to the opposition, or just throwing in the extra defender and hoping like Hell.

Besides, closing down Bale is fine were it not for the other threats in the shape of Van der Vaart and Lennon. Oh, and Modric. Bloody Hell.

2-1 to us, then.

We really have stopped even trying to competie, its fucking Spurs ffs, we may aswell take to the field waving white flags.

Why?  Just because the formation appears to be a 352 or 532 it does not mean we cannot attack and compete.  It all depends on what the player's instructions are.

I can see some logic in 3 at the back as Spurs play one up top  in adebayor.  My main worry will be if spurs get too much possession and Bale and Lennon (is he playing?) push our wing backs too far back.  As ever, I'd prefer a player other than Heskey in midfield as he is not good enough at retaining possession in my opinion.

Excellent point, Arry will be putting great stock in Lennon and Bale, that's where there main play will spread out to IMO, negate that and we have a glimmer, problem is Bale on song must be one of the best players in the world at the moment.

If the same team comes out second half I might lose the will to live.  Yes, two individual mistakes (whoever was supopsed  to marking that cnut Adebayor for the first and Collins/Dunne the second) are the difference but....  It's defence V attack.  Bit of bottle and bravery from AM and the players second half is the minimum requirement.

31% possession is scandalous.
Defensively, Collins is the weakest link (again).
The system is not working, we are paying so much attention to neurtralising their wide play that we have simply surrendered the middle of the park.
The midfield needs to tuck in tighter and everybody needs to be playing 10 yards further forward !

utter bollocks, stemming from an ultra conservative philosophy going into the game. This isn't MON's Villa where we can suck up pressure and attacking on the counter with pace. We don't have a John Carew holding the ball up. We don't have an Ashley Young bombing down the wing, we don't have a Gareth Barry quickly playing the ball out to the wings, and we don't have a work all day James Milner breaking shit down and steaming forward in support of the forwards. We are getting what we deserve. I really hoped AM wouldn't be like this where we threw in the towel before the game started.

You say defenders? They don't know the fucking meaning of the word.

Not even trying, ffs, not even trying to close them down. Disgraceful.

That's the thing if your going to do the defensive thing you have to close down as well. This is bollocks we have to try and attacking, it is fucking gash.

McCleish has gone into this game like we're playing fucking Barcelona. He might as well have just handed his own balls on a silver platter to Redknob before the game because he obviously had no intention on manning up for this game, fucking clueless twat!!
No grit, no composure, one meaningful tackle from Herd all half. 5 fucking defenders and they couldn't have scored 2 easier goals. If he had anything about him he'd admit he's out of his depth and fuck right off!

Compare the personnel in their midfield against ours and it is not difficult to understand why the create chances and we do not.

Maybe we should have picked more than one recognised midfielder then ?

Agree. But he's more likely to bring another defender on.

Absolute disgrace of a starting line up - a midfield of Hutton, Herd, Petrov and Heskey won't cause anyone any problems let alone a decent Spuds side. Surrendered the game before kick-off and fielded a side to avoid a hammering - and it looks like even that might fail. I've been willing to give McLeish the benefit of the doubt so far, but if this is how we approach any game I'm having serious doubts.

Problem is, AM has set the team up from a defensive point of view, we're now 2-0 down so where does he go from here? Does he change it straight away or play the first 15 mins with the same team (which i have a feeling he will do). We all know, that we're screwed so why not just go for broke? Put the attacking players on. Neville is really highlighting how poor hutton and collins were for the second goal too... Ouch!!

Mcleish is a disgrace, his team selection has meant spurs have the mental edge before the game even kicked off.

We cannot defend for toffee even with 6 defenders and Emile on the pitch.

Have to agree.  If we were non-league minnows drawn away to a Premier League team I would expect this mindset and attitude.  On paper Tottenham currently have the better side BUT we have got a team and players that can attack them and score goals.

I just can't understand why we are sitting back and giving them so much respect.  It makes you wonder how on earth we would approach playing Barcelona?! Incredibly disappointing and not good enough for Aston Villa, in my view.  Hopefully in the second half we will get in their faces, battle for every ball and play as if we want to get something out of the match.

I have no idea what it is that James Collins is supposed to be good at.

I'm starting to think along those lines too.  Whilst there are usually mitigating circumstances he always seems to be involved in the goals we concede which suggests there is a communication problem in the defence or simply a lack of talent.

Today someone said that he was originally marking Adebeyor at the corner (whereas he'd no doubt argue that the guys on the posts should have played Ade offside).   The second goal today he could have cut the cross out OR not obstructed Given's view.

We may as well be phasing Clark in to see whether he is good enough as he can't do much worse.

Come on, lads, who's surprised? This is what we've got this season - we can beat a handful of poor teams this season, we can compete with anyone reasonable, and we'll get totally outplayed by anyone approaching good. Said it at the start of the season, haven't seen anything to make me change my mind. We're barely competing tonight.

We do have the players in the squad to perform better - half of them are on the bench though, and have been for weeks.

Talk alot of bollocks about how we'll respond in the next game and will give Collins, Hutton automatic starts again with another park the bus tactic while Clark etc. rotting away on the bench thinking why must he watch clowns make fool of themselves every week.

Whoever made the ged comment a while ago is right. A good proportion of our squad showed themselves to be shit stirring gutless twats as well as limited footballers last season. They are only still here because it was a cheapskate option to hope Mcleish could polish up a few turds and get 2 more seasons out of them. God how sad.

Why can't we ever play a team as bad as us at our meandering worst?

Shades of Liverpool and Man Citeh away last season.

You can blame the tactics tonight to a degree. But regardless of formations, there should be a bit more zip and bite to our play. We just look like we're going through the motions, playing the game almost at testimonial pace.

It's swell that RL likes Big Eck, and is bowled over by his enthusiasm for the game, the way he talks and a few nice tributes from Siralex.  I think I'd prefer a manager who didn't send his teams out to keep the score down against galactic superpowers such as Tottingham flaming Hotspur though.  He should have ditched that type of mindset when he left his previous employers.
Title: Re: Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Match Thread

Defending McLeish for tonight is impossible. The side are not even going into challenges, and Herd is again the only one looking half decent. Bent and Gabby are excused as the rest of the side need to pass to them, not continuously lump it aimlessly. The end of the collins dunne pairing is much needed.

Anyone who still continues to defend McLeish has to question themselves as a Villa fan. And I will challenge them to it.

And I'll challenge you to a cock fight you big girly.

If you don't moan you're not a Villa supporter. That's original.

Absolutely abysmal. I was embarrassed watching it. That's what you get when you sell your best players though. Cheers Randy.

We lost that game as soon as he put the team sheet up. I understand trying to contain the ability of Bale, Lennon, Modric etc, but it wouldnt of mattered if he set up his team with 11 defenders, they still would of beat us and we offer nothing in the few seconds of possesion we had. Footballs changed so much over the last 15 years and its quite obvious the sucessful teams are not the ones who set up negatively and hope to contain and defend for 90 mins. I feel like we're playing an even more prehistoric syle of football then we have ever done and I just hope for once he starts to see that and not set up his team to do the same against Swansea....be it I hold no hope of that against Man.Utd even though I personally think they're there for the taking.

I think Motson just came as he sucked off Spurs. Twunt.

I quite liked the bit where he used about fourty words, to try to describe what had happened to Redknapp in hospital........ operation is the word you're looking for John, operation.
