PSG, Benfica, Celtic, Stuttgart (H), Real Madrid, Milan, Sporting CP, Brest (A)

Yeah, that would do alright.

Not true any more, Amazon Prime has first pick for seventeen Tuesday night games.

How many points from that lot?
Best case, I'd go...

PSG 1
Benfica 3
Celtic 3
Stuttgart 3

Real Madrid 0
AC Milan 1
Sporting CP 1
Brest..... 3

Is there any sense how many points from the 8 games would be enough for qualification to the knock-outs? I guess we'd need 3 wins out of 4 at home to give us a fighting chance.

The max anyone can get is 24 points. Very basic working out but last year in the old format with 18 points being the maximum, second places were 8, 9, 10, 12, 10, 8, 12, 12 so an average of 10 points. Add on 4 points for the two extra matches so I expect 14 points to be in with a chance of straight through.  With 9 points being the low end of the 24th. Obviously the pot 1 teams are also now playing other pot 1 teams rather then "inferior" opposition so that could sway it as well.

I honestly think GD will be a big decider in qualifying or not qualyfying.

I think this has the potential to be a really interesting format. I just hope we do well enough that I want to study the table rather than ignore it.

I think the format looks great, the only real problem is that there is a lack of difference between finishing 9-16th and 17th-24th. If they made the 9-16th vs 17th-24th round one leg with the higher-placed team at home, that would be better.

I think the biggest flaw for the law makers is  that it doesnt make a difference what pot you are in. You are still playing the same sides from each 4 pots.

It looks abit messy not sure how they are gonna determine 8th if teams all have same points and GD for example. If head to heads were a draw as well then you have a right mess

Don't really see that as a "flaw". Makes it more unpredictable and gives a chance for new teams to compete. The group stage has generally been dull as fuck for decades.

Tie-breakers below. Head to head doesn't come into it as not all teams will have played each other. Doubt it will be that problematic, to be honest, you rarely see loads of teams on the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored in the league after eight games so not sure why you would be more likely to here...

Although it seems to have been decided that in two legged competition, playing home second leg is an advantage, which is what 9th to 16th get.

Yeah, I know. I still think making that round one leg would provide a better inventive to finish 9th-16th and make the end of the group stage more exciting.
