I get the 'Emery knows best' stuff, but that's a given really.

It's not really that either. The Barkley signing can probably be assigned to 'Emery knows best'.

The Onana signing can be assigned to 'replacing the sort of player that Emery doesn't normally have in his central midfield with one that he does'.

To lose Luiz and Diaby and replace them with Onana and Philogene would be very disappointing, if that's what we end up doing.

Before the rumours of Luiz leaving started, absolutely nobody would be making the case that Onana would be an upgrade. In fact, if anyone brought it up they'd probably be laughed out of town.

I did, and I wasn’t, so that was a perceptive start by you. Feel free to laugh though, and we’ll see how that goes. Apparently, the Liverpool Echo’s Everton correspondent thinks we’ve got an £80m player.

If you think Philogene is Diaby’s replacement, you probably don’t take much notice of where they both play. ICYMI, one’s a winger, one’s a support striker (for us anyway). Last season, Diaby was mostly replaced by Tielemans, McGinn. Rogers and Duran. Cast your mind back and concentrate really hard, and you might recall.

You were calling for Onana to replace Luiz 6 months ago? Fair play.

I'm not laughing at anyone, and hope he's brilliant for us, and he seems to have a lot of what we've been missing. Not sure there's any need for arsey comments though. Most of the Everton forums seem to be coming down on the side of it being good business for them. Apparently a lot of them wanted him dropped, and when he was they won 3 in a row.

My post was about the business we've done SO FAR, including the potential sale of Diaby. I'm aware that Diaby and Philogene aren't like for like, which is why I said IF he goes I hope we've got something else lined up.

If we can't talk about the business we've done so far, may as well lock the thread until the window slams shut.

I'd hope we're after a Luiz replacement still. Unless we're going with Yuri and Barkley, with Emi now back fit for the 10 slot. Onana and Yuri gives balance, Onana and Boobie does not.

Doesn't that depend on who the opposition is Ads.  I can see times when both might play, in fact, I think they would be a formidable force together.  Not every game though.

We are definitely adding physicality, which is something we have needed for a long time.

We conceded a lot of soft goals last season , and despite great progress there was still a general consensus of a soft underbelly at times. Onana coming in makes sense .

At Arsenal he had Ramsey, Odegard, who he played in his midfield, not just big destroyers.

Wasn't Ramsey injured and Odegard played for the opposition?

You're right, Odegard didn't play for him. But Ramsey played a fair bit before falling apart, I think.

Looking at the players that did, I don't think Onana is particularly more of a fit that Luiz. Given we'd offered him a new contract it's pretty clear Emery wanted him in his midfield, just probably not in the role that Onana is coming in to play.

I dont see either as having the passing range to dictate a game. Keep it simple and move it on, for sure. But then we're reliant on Pau to effectively bypass them for better progressive passing. There's only 3 teams better than us and that's not how we ought to be playing to reduce that number.

He had Guendozi at Arsenal and wasn't there long enough to really get the squad he would have wanted.

Tielemans, Barkley and McGinn are all options for where Luiz played.

Yeah they are. Not the same level of quality though is it. I want us to be better next season, not worse.

Viktor Tsygankov the latest name. Plays for Girona on the wing.
