I'd hope we're after a Luiz replacement still. Unless we're going with Yuri and Barkley, with Emi now back fit for the 10 slot. Onana and Yuri gives balance, Onana and Boobie does not.

Doesn't that depend on who the opposition is Ads.  I can see times when both might play, in fact, I think they would be a formidable force together.  Not every game though.

I dont see either as having the passing range to dictate a game. Keep it simple and move it on, for sure. But then we're reliant on Pau to effectively bypass them for better progressive passing. There's only 3 teams better than us and that's not how we ought to be playing to reduce that number.

Good point Ads.  I guess it might be about full backs getting forward too but agree with the overall point.

Luiz had an exceptional 12 month period, but was poor from Feb onwards. Tielemans was our best midfielder by a distance last 2-3 months of the season and is pretty much the Doug like for like replacement I think, just needed in a year early. Onana and Barronechea appear to be much more combative and will shoulder some Kamara work, but I'm pretty confident Barkley will be our deep lying playmaker alongside one of them for much of the season, and probably be as effective as Doug, minus the pens. We look stronger physically, deeper and possibly more tactically flexible now, potentially able to press more in wide areas too. I see this summer as more of an evolution, which might take a little while but end up more consistent. Last 18 games our form was top 8 not 4, in huge part due to fatigue. We need to be stronger. We are also seeing the age come down, this summer feels very much a building block for years to come.

OUT
Luiz, Iroegbunam, Zaniolo, Lenglet, (Coutinho gone but not playing last season)

IN
Barkley, Onana, Maatsen, Barrenechea, Dobbin, Iling Junior, Philogene (Mings, Buendia & Ramsey all out for most of last season).

Still up in the air, Diaby, Dendoncker, Digne/Moreno, Duran,

That is definitely stronger, and deeper too, plus we have other irons in the fire... This is looking good.

I’m with Golden, I’m pretty sceptical about much of the business we’ve done.

I’m happy enough with Barkley & JPB, but that’s really just playing around the edges of the squad at low cost.

I don’t know much about the Juve lads, but looking at stats etc I can’t see how people think it’s a good deal from our perspective.

I doubt we’ll see much of Dobbin.

I quite like the idea of Onana, but it seems a big price for a player who hasn’t really shone in the PL.  interesting Barca and Arsenal were linked, so hopefully we have more a Viera than a Palmer.

On top of this we’ve lost Luiz and maybe Diaby.  For me the quality of potential starters has gone down, but obviously we have more bodies in the squad.

Of course no doubt Emery will turn them into an effective unit, but it’s a bit meh to me.

Edit - Forgot Maatsen who I think could be a good signing.  But it’s already a strong position for us, so a strange way to spend that much of our budget.

I’m quite happy, so far.

We won all three league games we played without Luiz last season, so I’m confident Emery will not be too worried about it.

I think we have improved depth and also bought some players who are still developing and we can get more out of.

My only concern is Barrenechea permanently looks like a bored, moody teenager. I know he’s Vulcan and everything, so maybe that’s just how he looks, but it does make me wonder how well he’s going to settle here.

Yeah they are. Not the same level of quality though is it. I want us to be better next season, not worse.

I'd agree that they are probably not as good on an individual basis, but on a squad basis over the course of a season (ie. Luiz playing as many games as he did last season compared to those 3 sharing the load)?

He’s got his mate from Juve and the two Emi’s to help in regards to that.
I think he’ll be fine

I think people forget how bloody awful Diaby was at times. Ramsey and Buendia being back properly enhances the team massively. Rogers is already as useful if not more than Diaby.

I’m not sure they have, but I think it can take time for people to settle. Plus in spite of that he made a significant contribution to our success.

OUT
FIRST TEAM = Luiz
SQUAD PLAYERS =  Iroegbunam, Zaniolo, Lenglet, (Coutinho gone but not playing last season)

IN
FIRST TEAM = Barkley, Onana, Maatsen
SQUAD PLAYERS = Barrenechea, Dobbin, Iling Junior, Philogene (Mings, Buendia & Ramsey all out for most of last season).

The squad definitely has more depth so hopefully we can avoid the 9th place form during the second half of the season.

If Diaby leaves then surely we will be buying a replacement. Certainly an interesting summer so far in terms of level of activity. No idea how it's going to pan out but got to trust Unai to find a way.

I’m not sure my 2 minutes of research is particularly sound but, if the Saudis pay £60m for Diaby, is that more than double their transfer record? I cant see anything over £30m in the last 12 months? They pay big wages but not transfer fees.

Which might suggest either a change in strategy or it’s bollocks

The only one that comes to mind that exceeds that is £47m for the Wolves player - Neves? I could be mistaken though, I haven’t looked it up or anything cuz that’s how I roll.
