Johnson would still be my first choice to come in, as i do think we still need a 'forward' but not really someone who is just an out and out striker. If we start the season with Watkins, Archer, Daiby, Johnson, Coutinho, Bailey and Buendia that's plenty really for 2 or 3 in the starting 11, despite a likely large number of games.

I think Johnson would play plenty of games for us to be honest, i wouldn't be too worried about that.

It’s a strange one. We all want Archer to be given a chance but aren’t comfortable with him being first choice back up just in case he doesn’t make the step up (& OW gets injured) and/or because we think we need at least better than Watkins to make the step up and challenge top 4/5

I'd be happy enough with Archer leading the line if Watkins was out for a few weeks with an injury. The problem is more the number of games we're hopefully going to have through the season, especially the first half. It's all hypothetical but say Watkins did pick up a knock and was out for a month, you're then relying on Archer to play all the matches, never mind not get injured. We definitely need a 3rd person, whatever form that takes. And hopefully we get a few more goals from midfield too, which would greatly reduce the pressure on Watkins or Archer.

Diaby can play there too. And Duran.

I wonder if the Bamford thing is because we are sniffing round the other Leeds players, Adams and Gnonto.

Lots of people have said this about Diaby but according to transfermarkt he's played there 3 times in 200+ games.

Different places have him as playing pretty much all over the front line, and just in behind too.

Strikes me that we're looking to do similar to Liverpool with Salah, Mane and Firmino, and have fluidity across the lines.

Emery mentioned Diaby's ability to play across the front line in his interview yesterday

Is there even a Bamford thing? The last thing I can see that John Percy has put online about us was nearly two weeks ago, that we might up our bid for Diaby, a player that until that point he'd never even suggested we were interested in.

So I think it has to be a bit better sourced than what we currently have to make it a "thing".

There isn't it was someone trolling on another forum and it's took off. Percy has said nothing about Bamford.

Read elsewhere that Percy reckons we are after Bamford.

If he could stay fit he’d be a very different option than we already have….if he could stay fit his team probably wouldn’t have been relegated.

Not a player I would personally want here.

Was also thinking yesterday whether Weighorst would  be a good option if we wanted a striker in the squad with different physical options?

Not exactly sexy options as players but different to what we have currently….particularly if we are saying Keinan is done at the club.

We already have a player in Keinan Davis that is different in terms of stature & strength. He has excellent hold up play. Good link up play. Is mobile & pacy.

And he won't cost us a thing.

I would rather keep him as a different option than pay for Bamford or Weghorst...

If we're looking for an older head (31) for a season then Mehdi Taremi at Porto fits the bill. He's a goal machine scoring 32 last season, 22 in the league, 5 in CL, 1 in Europa and the rest in domestic cup competition.
He's available and Jorge Mendes has been called in to help shift him. He has one year left on his contract, won't get a new one and Porto would rather cash in.

Bamford would spend most of his time on the treatment table. He's crocked.

If Villa had a good offer for Archer, say 20 million, would we sell him?

I wouldn't, but I think we possibly would.

The only thing that would make it worth them thinking about selling would be the immense boost to FFP of selling a youth product.

You'd have a long queue of clubs willing to take him off our hands for £20m.

£20m to a Premier League team with a £25m buy-back option in the first two years.

Job done, either massive profit or if he carries on as he is we've got a finishing school for him and a shit-hot striker for a the cost of a few million.
