I thought Jack was going to leave a long time before he did as I was convinced he had a release clause. I don't feel that trepidation at all with Martinez, that's not to say he hasn't got a release clause, I pretty much just assume a lot do now and work from there but I don't see anyone buying and him wanting to move to them. Chelsea and Tottenham won't be offering CL football next season and it's far from guaranteed next time around. The only club that could tempt him would be Man Utd. I could see a situation where he has a clause in his contract saying (and as keepers don't tend to go for as much) if a club in the CL offers over £50mil then he can go but I just don't think they will be spending that on a keeper. They're tying De Gea down so reckon they'll go for someone younger to challenge him.

I'm just not worried like I was with Jack, nothing is screaming to me 'he's off!'. I don't watch enough European football to worry about their threats, mind. I'd be amazed if we didn't at least get one more season out of him.

Like Jack, the number would be at the top end of what anyone is likely to pay so we shouldn’t worry too much.  Doug’s, on the other hand, would be low as he was nearing the end of his contract so held the cars with regards to negotiations.

Whilst I think (hope) the Martinez rumours aren’t true, I did notice that the adverts and artwork for our season ticket renewals didn’t feature him. Mings, McGinn and Ramsey were all there, but our World Cup winning superstar wasn’t. A bit odd, perhaps? Or reading too much into it?

I have a feeling that if we were offered upwards of £120m we would take it.

Well yeah, obviously if someone offered to make a 30 year old goalkeeper the third most expensive footballer in history then we'd probably agree to it.

But nobody is going to do that, are they?

Currently rated the worlds best and just won a world cup. If he goes it will be to one of the Superleague wanker clubs and for big money. I don't know what the record for a GK is, but it would need to be smashed for us to sell him and any clause will be set high.

It was Unai's recent 'everyone is replaceable' comment that makes me think we might take the profit. After the wasted opportunity with the Grealish money I ought to be more worried about it, but I am confident Emery would cope just fine and use the resource well.

This is the problem with the "let's wait another year until we are ready". We have arguably the best keeper in the world playing for us at the moment and while he may well love being here, the lure of the Champions League and all that comes with it is understandably attractive.

Getting into any European competition might satisfy him for next season, but I can see why, despite his affection for us, he might want to play at the top level. That said, where? There are a handful of clubs that could afford him, need a keeper and will be in the CL next season.

Real Madrid
Man Utd
Liverpool
Bayern

Who else would be on that list?

Man U could afford him, and I think he'd go there if they put in a bid. They need to make sure they qualify for the Champions League first though, as it's not impossible that they could be in the same European competition as us.

We’ve got a brilliant Spanish coach who knows La Liga inside out, a Spanish scout with the same knowledge, a transfer ‘fixer’ that we’ve clicked our fingers at and stolen from Barcelona, a club in Portugal, an academy that seems to be working well, and we can afford 99% of footballers in the world outside the PL.

Fuck solving Chelsea’s problems.

Fantastic post mate. Exciting times ahead.

Whilst I said I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved, on the other side of things, he has made no noises about doing so, we don’t need to sell him financially, there are few clubs that could offer him what we are and finally, I note that his independent transfer value is a surprisingly low £30m, I think we’d want to see considerably more than double that to consider it given he’s got 4 years left. Who would go so high that needs him?

He did give that ill-advised interview a while ago about wanting to play for a team like PSG. He's rowed back on that since, but whatever, I don't think it means much either way.

Yes Id say Man Utd would be the likeliest but if De Gea resigns up, Id cross them off as well. If he doesnt then, for the kind of money we’d want, even they might be looking for someone a little younger maybe? I suppose if the Arabs take over, all bets will be off as they will be looking to make a big splash transfer wise.

If I were Man U , I’d get degea signed up. It would be far cheaper than 60 million plus on a 30 year old replacement.

he's publicly said he wants to play champions league football a couple of months ago, if we haven't been on our toes since Dec sounding out a new ball playing number one it would be staggering.
Unfortunately I can see it being ManU due to De Gea's demise and contract situation and they have a couple of fellow countrymen in their squad most likely tapping him up. I would prefer he takes his antics abroad. However a world record fee for a GK should soften the blow. Imagine if Purslow tries the old "we identified his key attributes and decided to replace him with 3 keepers"  :D

As for replacements Pickford could be gettable, one of the best with his feet, bit of a character were some links before the world cup.
