What pisses me off about this kind of thing is that every time things look on the up for us someone somehow wants to sell off our best players, with quite a great deal of success it must be said.

In the sixty-odd years I've been following the Villa I believe we have had only two players who could rightly be called world class, Paul McGrath and Emi Martinez.  With our current owners why would we even consider selling Martinez?  They have form for telling interested parties to do one.

Can't tell anyone to do one if there is a release clause in the last contract he signed.

I now expect the worst after what Grealish did. I think he will probably be here next season but who knows. Wouldn't be surprised if he left. I wouldn't hold a grudge against him though.

In that screenshot it says he does not have an exit clause which suggests to me that if Villa want to keep him then they do until it suits them to sell.  Am I reading it wrong?

Marco Asensio is perfect for Aston Villa
« Reply #887 on: May 11, 2023, 08:26:27 PM »
Evening everyone, here's a short 3 minute video detailing everything you need to know about Marco Asensio and why I believe he's ideal for Aston Villa under Emery. The man's made no secret of the fact that he's looking for regular first team football and I'm fairly confident this one will go through. As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts and am happy to answer any questions you may have, cheers!

PS: I couldn't find a thread on the player, hope it's okay with the mods that I've created this one, if not then my apologies in advance

Oh, if he doesn't have a clause then I trust the club will stand firm.

But I recall Smith saying there wasn't a clause in Jack's contract either

I'm not saying he isn't a top player - crap players don't last that long at Madrid - but you can make El Ghazi look like a world beater in a 3 min youtube video.

I thought he said he "didnt know of a clause" or "wasn't aware of one" or something like that

I would be shocked if he didn't have one, same with Luiz and possibly Cash (not that I think that will trouble anyone soon).

I wouldn’t expect Cash to have one, nor Emi. But I’d be very confident Doug has one, we convinced him to sign when he could have left in the summer for nothing. It seems to happen when we renew contract’s that have less time left and agents have us over a barrel….

If Emery wants to reshape the squad and we lose a few, so be it.  I trust him.

I do feel that in this case, losing Martinez would be a set back though. He clearly loves the club, and it’s probably agent speak - but as a Villa fan, the harsh reality of 2 steps forward, 3 backwards always seems to bite just as we threaten to push on.

Oh well

I was thinking more about Luiz Chris.    I think the keeper position is different to the outfield players as we need a really good base to build from and Emi is as good as they come.  It would take something pretty special to sell him, unless we were offered a couple of players who we could really do with.

We’ve got a brilliant Spanish coach who knows La Liga inside out, a Spanish scout with the same knowledge, a transfer ‘fixer’ that we’ve clicked our fingers at and stolen from Barcelona, a club in Portugal, an academy that seems to be working well, and we can afford 99% of footballers in the world outside the PL.

Fuck solving Chelsea’s problems.
Amen brother.

I have a feeling that if we were offered upwards of £120m we would take it.

If we do I won't be as bothered as I was with Jack leaving (was genuinely upset about losing Jack in the way we did). For all his talent he is far more replaceable. Also I find his time-wasting and bad sportsmanship really irritating.

Well yeah, obviously if someone offered to make a 30 year old goalkeeper the third most expensive footballer in history then we'd probably agree to it.

But nobody is going to do that, are they?
