We're doing well considering where that muppet left us.

Wasn't just the two wins this season, it was something like 18 defeats in the calendar year.

If Emery had come in and turned a few more of those sort of defeats into draws it would still be progress. But we're scratching out wins in these tight games without playing particularly well.

Hopefully we can add a bit of finesse to our play between now and the end of the season.

Good teams play badly and still win.

Every three points we take pushes us that little bit further up the table and increases the likelihood of the manager being able to attract the players he really wants playing for him in the summer, rather than having to put something together from (almost entirely) Gerrard's squad.

It's about points and points only for the rest of the season as far as I am concerned.

Tough watch at times but we looked in control and that’s another win and a clean sheet. Given where we were under the previous manager not all that long ago it’s still pretty remarkable to find ourselves 11th and looking upward. Thought McGinn had a fine game, that position suits him.

Five points off fifth, and only 7 off Newcastle, who have been hailed as top four members elect this season!

Hard work against ten men yest again. The subs made us worse. Still the 3 points, clean sheet and home win are all important. UTV

Very happy with the win and clean sheet. Unai's Villa don't really do draws, do they?

Painful but 3 points

Played better football against Leicester, Man City and Arsenal and lost them all
Played crap football against Everton and Palace collecting 6 points

Funny old game

Quote from: John McGinn to BBC
Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn: "It was good. A little bit of mixed emotions. I know we're getting a little bit greedy after three points but when they go down to 10 men, we have to adapt better. We didn't play well after that.

"We ground out the three points. I'm sure the manager won't be pleased with the second-half performance but it's a win and we've been craving a win here for a while.

"Great to get the three points and it gives us an opportunity to look up and not down."

On Palace's disallowed goal: "It gave us a kick up the backside, it was a tight one - I thought it was on at the time but VAR don't get the offside ones wrong so thankfully that went in our favour. After that we had a decent first-half performance.

"That's all it was: decent. We can't get carried away and we need to play a lot better than if we're going to get three points at West Ham."

On Villa's goal: "The manger was trying to get myself, Emi Buendia and Jacob Ramsey into those spaces and use the full-backs. Sometimes he wants them to stay but today he wanted them to get forward.

"Great run from Matty Cash and it made my pass easy."

On West Ham in the next game: "It's always a tough place to go, it's somewhere that we've not managed to get a result in a while but if we win that then who knows what can happen."

Exactly. We’ve had plenty of games in the past where we’ve played alright and lost, I’m quite happy to have it this way round.

Good 3 points but they came at a cost to a pivotal player.

We never get a break with injuries so I fully expect him to be out for the season. >:(

I know we scored from playing out from the back, but we overdid it today especially against 10, when we didn't really look like we had an extra player. It's not so much playing out like that, but the default seems to be to go back too often when there is scope for going forward, which is where we are better.

I know this may sound churlish after a win, but it wasn't a good watch against a team who were low on confidence.

Palace aren't the mugs some seem to think they are. Last 7 games they've only lost to us and Man Utd. The 5 draws were all against sides in the top 9.

Exactly. I said something similar the other week, get the points and league position will take care of itself. Winning's a wonderful habit to have.
