The ref was dismal today, not remotely competent.
he didn't give us anything for the first 20 mins - a total shambles. He also got the handball wrong - how he didn't see it was a joke.

From the Guardian match report - winning's easy with that extra man:

With Douglas Luiz back just 14 days after helping Brazil win Olympic gold and calmly protecting the back four, offering McGinn and Jacob Ramsey freedom in a 4-4-3 shape, Villa looked increasingly secure.

midfield was much better today - more balance and a lot better tempo and work rate - hopefully that disgrace at Watford gave them all the kick up the arse they needed

We had 11 outfield players? At last we’ve made the extra man count!

Looked more comfortable as the game wore on, flashes of McGinn, flashes of Luiz...top finish from Ings, that's what he brings!.  Rocky start against a team that look 15-20th finish at this juncture.  Funny that the pundits seem to fancy us more than we do!?

Much better shape today, and a more balanced midfield. Ramsey was shaky to start with but grew in confidence. Strange to see Young back as a combative full back. Cash did well I thought. Mings immense. I feel for El Ghazi, absolutely superb on penalties but he just can’t get past his man, if only he was a bit quicker he could be a real player for us.

If we can get Watkins, Bailey and Traore fit we’ll hopefully have a decent season.

Some of the fouls he just let go was ridiculous
Apparently refs have been instructed to let the games flow so we’ll see plenty of this over the season. Klopp has already started moaning about it on SSN, so this won’t be the last we hear about poor refereeing for obvious fouls.

The problem was he was giving them fouls and not us - so it's not like he was letting the game flow often enough

in the end we conceded 8 fouls to their 18 and I reckon there were 5-6 they committed that he let go.

Surprised in the game stats that Newcastle slightly edged possession…didn’t feel like that watching for me, although the goals are the only important stat at the end of the day.

it was about 55% us until we were 2-0 up and then we let them have the ball a lot more.

Yes this game of football hangs on small drops like that.
