When he first arrived, I was concerned he was lightweight, a sort of Carles Gil for the 2020s.

That’s exactly who the bloke I know, who is around the squad, initially described him as.

He’s come with a big price tag and he’s moved to a bigger club where expectations are far higher. He’s getting better and better with every game and I’m sure there’s more to come from him.

I think he is a fabulous talent who will get better and better the more he plays.

His and Coutiniho must be so tricky to defend against.

And to think we have Traore and Bailey to add yet.

We are starting to look tasty

Not worried about that any more. The lad can more than hold his own in a physical battle.

Never stops running, either.

I really like his tendency to shrug tackles and maintain his dribble. He's not cynical and is always looking to maintain the attack.

And another example that it can take a bit of time for a player to settle and get up to speed.

Jack who? Emi really looking the part now.

I've just had a look at the two together as interestingly they've had almost exactly the same amount of time on the pitch in the league so far this season:

Grealish

Minutes: 1,242
Goals: 2
Shots: 20
Big chances missed: 6
Assists: 2
Chances created: 36
Dribbles succeeded: 27

Emi

Minutes: 1,234
Goals: 2
Shots: 16
Big chances missed: 1
Assists: 3
Chances created: 30
Dribbles succeeded: 27

So Emi's scored just as many, assisted more, not fluffed as many big chances and has the same number of successful dribbles.  All when he's only really been performing for half of that time on the pitch, cost about  a third what we sold Grealish for and is a year younger.

Based on half a season's worth I know who I think got the better deal.

I’d be interested to see pass completion stats, I think that’s where Buendia needs to improve a lot but I wonder if that’s backed up with the stats.

Pass completion stats:

Grealish 88% / Emi 80%

You have to be careful though with stats in isolation. Man City have loads of possession with tons of easy sideways passes. I'd suggest Emi's generally under more pressure and trying to be more progressive so more passes are likely to go astray.

Here's a stat for you, Emi ran almost 11km on Saturday, more than any other player on the pitch.

Early season he was getting knocked off the ball a lot - that seems to have changed in the last few games and I cant work out what he has done to change.

Looks like a bit more awareness and acclimatisation to me, which is all I thought it needed.

Buendia and Coutinho plus £30m for Grealish 😂

Great performance tbh.

I think Joe was a player that if you take away the connection to the club, you lose a bit of the player. He needed Villa as much as we needed him I think.

Anyway who cares  8)

He's shifted from the Joe approach – go down looking for the free kick, to the Meatball approach – use your low centre of gravity to stay on your feet. Also, there was a bit on Match of the Day showing him picking up the ball more in between the lines, which allows him to look up and see the best line of attack. Much better than where he started the season away at Watford, surrounded by four defenders as an advanced 10.

He manages to use two markers against each other to get away from them, he did it beautifully on Saturday in the first half, and he did it a few times to Man Utd over the two games.

He's definitely improved, he still lingers in possession a little at times but quite a few of our players are guilty of that and I suspect it's a problem the whole squad needs to work on to ensure we always have numbers when we need them.

He's getting better, but he still loses possession a bit too easily. When you do that against the likes of Man City and Liverpool you often don't see the ball again for 5 minutes.

I think the giving the ball away is too common with this Villa team, what separates the top 6 with the rest is the amount of times they give up possession through unforced errors.

The money  we spent on Buendia is not the problem, its the other 60million of the Greasy money.

Well as per Buendia I wouldn’t write Bailey off yet.

On Ings he’s fine as an addition to the squad. The problem is Watkins and him can’t play together - so you have to make a choice.
