He still parrys (parries?) shots back into potential danger too much imo. I wonder is it because he's keen not to give away corners and the subsequent fighting on the goalline with an opposing player. Sometimes it looks like he's making an elaborate save for the cameras.

But I would prefer he pushed shots to the side and not back in front. Obviously sometimes it can't be helped based on the angle and power of the shot.

Martinez backs himself in most situations, he was close to saving it but that effort was perfect.

Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and give credit to the attacker, it was a great strike.
It was a great strike, but Emi misjudged it.

Several other great saves, however. Shame.

Terrible misjudgement by Emi, hovering on arrogance. 'You wouldn't dare to shoot from there, I'm Emi Martinez'. 'Oh Fuck'.

In my hairy days, I loved taking free kicks from that distance and angle. It was akin to taking a corner kick with your right foot. Ball follows same trajectory. Not as difficult as it looks.

Emi should know better. Thankfully, most times his judgement is better.

There’s a bloke who Tanswell follows (I think it was him who was talking about it on a podcast) who collates the stats, and says that Emi is the safest “parrier” in the PL.

His starting positioning looked pretty good to me.
Certainly wouldn’t describe it as a terrible misjudgement or a display of arrogance.

If anything I would like to see Emi show more of his confident arrogance that he had post winning the World Cup.

But, but, but the ball went in the net.

His starting position couldn't of been that good.

No goal keeper is superhuman, even Emi. Stach put the ball in the one position he could have scored and he could take another 10 of those in the same position and not score one. I doubt any keeper would be covering in any other starting area then the one Martinez started in.

I thought he was really good yesterday. I've seen the goal on TV and personally I'm not apportioning blame to him for it. Great execution from the player taking it.

He made 4 or 5 top saves that kept us in with a chance of getting something out of the game.
We have a lot to thank him for yesterday.

That part may very well be true and I’d expect Emi wouldn’t be the only top keeper to have that thought, given the distance.
He hedged his bets by backing himself, unfortunately the guy hit the one football sized gap that he couldn’t reach
