Onana had a good season, just injured too much for my liking. So much promise with him though.

What promise? He can't play on the half turn and goes missing when the heat is on. Barkley probably contributed more to the team and that's really not saying much.

Statistically Onana was in the top 10-15% of midfielders in Europe for most defensive stats, heading, ball carrying and goals. His pass completion stats were well above average and his stats for first touch and ball retention in the tackle are amongst the best in the league, as is his ability to carry the ball up the pitch.

If you think he's shite and/or not suited to how we play then you either aren't paying attention or are talking out of your arse. A fully fit Onana for the entire season and I reckon we'd have been in the mix for 2nd and, despite being a massive fan of Doug, I think most of us will see Onana as an upgrade by this time next year.

Of course his pass completion stats are high when his first thought under pressure is to return it to the centre back, he hasn't the technical ability to turn with it! Sure he can be strong in both boxes and can carry the ball well at times but that's not remotely enough for a 50m midfielder. There's the level Kamara, Tielemans and Luiz before him were at, Onana on the evidence of his first season is miles off that. Technically, tactically, resilience - nowhere near. As has often being said on here, for a guy with his physique he doesn't half spend a lot of time whinging on the ground.

Emery gave him huge, and barely deserved, opportunities away at both Manchester teams to finally make a mark in key games and he bombed spectacularly both days.

Who had a better season, Onana or Luiz?

The certainty with which he chats shit is laughable. Luiz was replaced by Tielemans for a start. How did that work out?

Diego Carlos number one fan speaks.

Luiz was replaced in the squad by Onana for a conveniently similar reported fee. Onana is sh*te

The widely-regarded worst judge of a footballer on H&V speaks. I’m a Villa fan. I like combinations of players who get better results for Aston Villa when selected. We have established many times that you prefer combinations of players who get worse ones. Weird, but each to their own.

I think Onana has so much potential still.  He’s clearly an excellent player with absolutely awful dress sense.

Onana was great at the start and superb late on, with some man of the match performances since his injury.

Sometimes it’s hard to take your posts too seriously, when at the end of a game most are praising players but your giving them 3’s or 4’s out of ten.

Like Teilemans, I expect Onana will kick on his second year. I hope a close season of conditioning work will toughen him up a bit. He could be our Viera.

I like Onana, he's an intelligent player and I'm sure he'll pick up instructions really well. He's acknowledged that Emery is making him a better player already, full pre-season of ideas with a largely settled squad and I'm really hopeful about what he, and we, can achieve this season.

I'm hopeful, but not confident, Martinez will be part of it.

Eh, I'm a Villa fan too, as is everyone posting on this forum. Your echo chamber isn't the only place where weird ideas get debated and challenged.

You have a weird fascination with Carlos and I enjoy repeating calling you out on it.
