I thought he'd saved the penalty, the way he reacted. I think he does like playing up for the cameras, which is fine when we're playing well, a bit silly when we're not.

This is the point I made before the PSG game in Paris. One of these days his antics would make him look foolish, for want of a better word, and it feels like that's what's happening now. I'm not blaming him for the recent results but that kind of arrogance can look ridiculous when the form is what it is.

I think it was just a case of being happy they'd missed and thinking it could be a pivotal turning point in the game which it could've easily been.

In any case Emi has had a poor season with the odd amazing save. First three seasons he'd have tipped the first goal onto the bar no problem. Let in too many like that or through his body this year.

Worry he's lost a bit of agility diving across his goal. We'll see early next season if it's just fatigue or decline.

We’ve made 40 errors leading to shots on goal in 34 games this season in the PL. We made 13 in 38 last season. So it seems he’s had more to do.

I wonder why that is.

He did his job just fine. That miss was down to him.

And it could, and should, have been a pivotal moment.

I thought he got into Mateta's head a bit as well, making him feel like he had to get it inside the post to score which led to him putting it wide.

Some people just lose their minds after a Villa loss. Martinez doesn't worry me, even a "shit season" is on par with most of our best goalies season. People seem to forget some of the saves he made this season (Nottingham away, point blank header stopped on the line for example). Arguably kept us within touching distance of PSG in the first leg being beaten by two wonder strikes. The problem with keepers is they have to react faster then any player when across comes over AND any slight mistake is normally a goal.
Agree with all this. I don’t think he’s been at his best this season, but he’s still the best goalkeeper in the league IMO. The odd mistake doesn’t change that (and in any case I think it has more to do with our style of play than anything … I think any goalkeeper would seem more error prone with the role that Emi fills, which is as a sweeper-keeper pretty much)

I agree with the posts above. He hasn't been at his best, but he's at the back of the queue as a cause for complaint IMAO. I also think it's harsh to blame him for the first. It had a devilish swerve that took it away from him.

I remember they said something in the commentary about us having conceded from the first shot on target over 20 times this season.  That's frankly just ridiculous.    I wonder how many that is compared to others, and whether it's a wild anomaly that's cost us badly this season, or whether we're only very slightly more than others.

Conceding from the first shot your opponent had on target feels like something that shouldn't be happening in almost half of your games.

add to this conceding 8 in stoppage time.

He's not the most to blame, but he has made a lot of errors this year, perhaps not on Saturday but for damn sure on Tuesday. You'd have to think it's something psychological, as you don't go from where he was to where he is, at his age, on natural hand-eye coordination. He also doesn't dominate the box like he used to, which to me seems a big indicator.

Hopefully he'll get it sorted. Certainly having a more solid structure in front of him would help build the confidence a little.

AND he would have saved it if on target. He had it covered all the way in to the corner. It wasn't like he was sent the wrong way for it.

The gobshite that is Carragher has said " If Martinez was the best in the world he would not be playing for a team like Villa "

Although I do think his crown has wobbled a bit this season he is still if not the best, certainly one of the best in the world.

You would have to be a real cnut to sate otherwise....but then I remembered it was Carragher
