Unai Emery: "Emiliano Martinez is the best goalkeeper in the world. Before the penalty, I was sat down on the bench dreaming he would save it... and he did."

The penalty miss wasn’t just about how poor it was. It’s how Emi got into the head of his opponent in that moment and because of his immense aura. It has to be so intimidating to most players.

The keeper that everyone hates unless he plays for your club.

I’ve commented in the post match thread. I was right behind him and he was v clever. Every time the striker moved he shadowed the move right until he actually hit it. That then made it look easy.

I think we've just uncovered Footy's real identity. No wonder he's always bigging himself up as El Maestro, and talking about his superior insight.

It makes sense now why they have that iPad on the bench.  McPhee is showing it to Emery saying - look what this lot are on.about now.

We need to get someone interviewing Unai to say something lude - or stray off topic and see how he reacts react.

Hopefully he can be playing until he's 40, I don't see why not. We've certainly got a good few years left of him. I can't see him drastically declining like de Gea or Casillas did. His player mileage is still very low considering his age.

Mix the goalkeeping talent of Buffon with the leadership of Roy Keane, the gamesmanship of Mourinho and the loyalty of Totti and you have our Emi.

Villa legend. Genuinely.

That’s exactly it. It was a shocking penalty, no pace and too close to the keeper, what possessed him to hit it so weakly?  Martinez, that’s what. The aura has grown further.

I think he was just trying to be too clever by doing one of those stupid pause for a second before hitting it attempts, and he just fucked it up.

Or he didn't have a plan B for when Emi didn't fall for the feint.

Could be, although I don't think Emi's 'aura' had much to do with it. His record of saving penalties for us is pretty poor to be honest, think that was the first one he's saved in the last 10.

That’s ignoring penalty shootouts, presumably?

Let me correct you and give you context. Yes that's context,  Dean Smith was also big on it.

Since debuting for Aston Villa in September 2020, Emiliano Martinez has saved four Premier League penalties with only Lukasz Fabianski , 5, saving more in this time!

So Risso there's no reason whatsoever criticising Martinez penalty record.
And that's not even taking into account the penalty shoot out v Lille.

You haven't corrected anything. 'Context' would be to include how many penalties various keepers have faced in that time. 1 save from 11 penalties before yesterday isn't a great record at all.
