There should be more love for this achievement. It’s a fantastic moment and one we should be proud of.

Agreed. When was the last time we could say we had the best in the world playing for us? McGrath, maybe. I can't think of any others.

I think McGrath got a vote for the best player award in 1993 or 1994 when Baggio won it. This is actually having one of our own players winning it. We should be delighted. He achieved this since he became a Villa player. It may never be repeated again.
And there is a very good chance he might not have achieved this if he hadnt become a Villa player.

He wouldn’t have as he’d have at least been an Arsenal rotational player for a year with Leno so may never have got into Argentina’s squad for the Copa America and end up being such a key player. He almost beat Friedal’s clean sheets record in his first season. He had to leave Arsenal to come to Villa to achieve winning a copa America, World Cup and this award.

Bizarrely not in the world XI as best keeper. Went to Courtois.

True for both McGrath and Emi.

McGrath at Villa was an exceptional player club and country. As good as Baresi or Rijkaard during late 80s into 90s.

In terms of absolute World Class - for Villa club and country I'd count Platt and McGrath for us but latter a couple of rungs above Platt.

Great to have another with Emi

(Yorke unlucky as T&T were a very small country though he made them better. )

Well clearly there needed to be something to show the complete ineptness of footballs governing bodies

So, the question has to be asked...is he Villa's best ever goalkeeper?

That could be chewed over for hours. What is certain is that he is by far our most decorated internationally at least.

If these kinds of awards mean anything, officially he is. But there are plenty of other criteria you could use. Not to mention he hasn't picked up a trophy in Villa colours.

Certainly the best I've seen for us. Far more consistent than Bosnich.

How much is the best goalkeeper in the world worth?
£50m ? £75m ? £100m ?

I doubt there are many clubs who could afford him outside of the oil clubs.

Damiano and Amanda are pleased, and will be dining on Findus Crispy Pancakes and arctic roll, followed by some heavy petting on RyanAir flight R36985. They're due back in Rednal at 2am.
36985 was overbooked so Dam and Ama were left behind…poor babes.
