I just dont see who would pay what we would be demanding for him. I love big Emi but I can't see an elite Champions League Club shelling out for a GK that's not great with his feet.

The only option I could maybe see is if Man Utd do get taken over and they start throwing stupid money around.

the gaffer is the gaffer, if he said stay back, then Emi needs to stay the fuck back.

Well listening to the interview it sounds like he hadn’t told him not to go forward, just it’s not what he expects him to do.

Indeed.

If a manager explicitly tells him not to go up for set pieces in the dying minutes and he goes and does it anyway, it's on Martinez.

If they've never even discussed it before and the manager hangs him out to dry publicly it's a bit shit.

The stats of keepers scoring from those kind of scenarios might not be particularly high. But you often see sides who are trailing do it - and not getting punished the way we did today.

It was a nothing set piece by Digne. That's a bigger issue for me when you're chasing in that scenario.

Emi Martinez pre or post world cup.  I know which one I prefer and its not the newly invented one.

It’s not a newly invented one. It’s one and the same. It’s the same Martinez that did a dance when Balloono Fernandez missed a penalty.

I think he will be gone in the Summer. It's a shame but we will get very good money and I trust a decent replacement.

I still don’t think you’re right - even if the manager doesn’t have goalkeepers go up for corners. That’s an odd quirk of the manager, but it’s a perfectly reasonable risk based decision to take in the 97th minute when you have a corner and you’re losing.
I think I'm on Emery's side on this. If it's such a good idea, why doesn't the keeper go up for a corner 5mins in to a game?

At 2-3 you're still in the game even in the last seconds of the match. At 2-4 you're not. I know both are defeats, but it's about embedding that philosophy that you don't just panic and start reverting to desperate measures. Because by and large you're not playing against a bunch of Sunday League players who are all of a sudden going to start bricking it because you're punting long balls up the pitch or there's a man in the penalty area who they weren't expecting.

Don't get me wrong, i like Emi M a lot and think some of the stick he's been getting is unfair. But I'm just not in to be Jimmy Glass type heroics.

Well there’s an obvious answer to that, it’s clearly a massive risk. The key point here is that if you’re losing and injury time is already up what does it matter? If there’s the slightest chance it might help why not give it a shot? It’s obviously incredibly unlikely to result in a goal, but it does happen. Worst case scenario you concede another goal, but so what you’re already going to lose if you don’t score.

I think Martinez’s comments the other week tells us all we need to know. Sure he loves the Villa but he wants Champions League now, he’s off. We just need to get to dollar.

A bit of a shame, but yes.

I said in the summer (and as usual was ridiculed) that we needed a no.2 shot stopper as I could see this happening.
There's a reason Arsenal let him go and that's probably his attitude. He's got even worse since the World Cup and has been absolutely AWFUL. His distribution and decision making is woeful. 11 conceded in 3 .

Just watched the Unai Emery interview on the BBC, I don't think the clown will be our goalkeeper much longer. He can see right through him. His attitude stinks, embarrassed himself on the world stage with that ridiculous childish reaction when handed the golden glove or whatever it was. No respect for those handing over the trophy or the host nation.

I’ll call it now, as soon as he leaves it’ll be you lining up first to slag off his successor.

That’s my take on it too. It’s the equivalent of the ‘Hail Mary’ it comes off or it doesn’t.
