Emery might have been happy with his lot, although I have my doubts after he'd spoken of the need for a winger so much. But he's just left a smaller club in Spain to come here, so is on the up. Martinez has just won the World Cup, and needs to see that the club's ambitions match his own, which they very clearly don't.

Regarding the winger he was after, I'd guess that who he wanted wasn't available so he looked at how many games we had left and decided to leave it until the summer and brought Bert back in for now. I think that's sensible if that was the case.

What happens if they aren't available in the summer?

Hopefully we’re on the right track with Nas and Emery seemingly to be running the show - but I think it all comes too late for Emi

They're apparently the 4th or 5th richest owners in the Premier League, but we really don't go at it any differently to anybody else in the bottom half. They're solid and dependable, but I don't think they're ever going to push the boat out for a proper crack at the top 6. This January was partly a sign of that.

You keep mentioning January and I don't get it. It just seems like a silly stick to beat the club with. It was only Emery's first transfer window and it sounds like it'll be who he thinks he needs rather than who the club wants from now on (Duran Duran aside).

They might not be I suppose although it's possible they may have been given an indication by the selling club that they may be willing to let him go in the summer. Who knows? It doesn't necessarily mean we've stopped being ambitious like one or two are suggesting.

You have to try to improve all the time. We didn't show any ambition, and I don't buy the line "there wasn't anybody available." It might have only been one game but that Brazilian kid Leicester had, showed more in one game than Bailey has since he's been here. People have been saying we need to show ambition to be able to keep players like Martinez and Kamara, and now less than two weeks after a truly dismal January window, Martinez has already strongly hinted he wants to leave.

I've said it before, but I strongly believe that we won't spend big in the summer, and we'll finish 10th or lower next season. I really hope you're dragging this post up to say "ner ner" at the end of next season.

So our best player (possibly) leaves and it's another 2 steps back.

It will be so hard to replace him without having our pants pulled down, it's hard to go out and buy a new no 1 without the world knowing Emi would be on his way out. Hopefully we go big in the summer and get at least another season out of him to prove we mean business.

I think it’s because there seemed like a really good opportunity to push for Europe and we have a weaker squad then when we went in.  We play 2 upfront and only have an untested guy on the bench.  Clearing the decks might have been the right thing to do in the long term but from a purely numerical basis we’re taking a big risk.  It will also be much harder to convince people to by into the project if we finish say 12 when 8 might have been possible.

To be honest, it looks just that. In fact, and I know I've said this before, since we got promoted we've rarely looked like we have any ambition higher than making up the numbers.

Of course you have to try and improve all the time but I don't see the point in just buying anybody. I get the feeling that's not how Emery would want it anyway. And like I said, I doubt very very much Martinez will choose whether to leave based on last month's transfer window, which you keep bringing up.

Emery coming in is a positive move though. They didn't hang about after that Fulham game and they did alledgelly speak to Pochetinno. Let's just see what transpires in the summer. Judging by how many he has already shifted out, it could be a busy one.

our last 6 transfers have been Olsen, Augustinnson, Dendoncker, Bednarek, Moreno and Duran. Those are not signings to push us to the Top 10, let alone the top 6.

And we're back where we've been before - it's always the next window.

Not a lot gets done in January anyway. It's only Chelsea who went berserk and Forest signed a few more to add to the 56 they bought in the summer, although Arsenal did sign Trossard. I'm sure there are more I've missed though.

I think since Joe left I have questioned their ambition.   The two summers before they invested heavily - but those players still make up the core of our team.

Then since Joe left I think they don’t know what to do.  Not saying that is because Joe left specifically - I’m hoping it’s because they haven’t really trusted any of the managers until now.  I’m hoping this summer I’ll be pleasantly surprised - and unai must have had assurances of some thought.

We seem to have lacked any clear strategy and hopeful Unai will help to change that

Why didn't you make it the last 8  or 9 signings and include Kamara and Carlos? Could have been a little more transparent.
