Great news though. His buy-out surely north of £50m

I would guess that if there is one, it’ll be double that. We’d want more than that for him now, and buy-outs are normally pitched at eye-watering levels.

Superb news. Obviously buying into Gerrard’s vision for the future.

Yep, definitely, and the club as a whole, I think Lange and Purslow too must have had a big part in this, given they were around when he joined. It shows the whole club is moving in the right direction.

We've also helped him to realise his dream of being Argentina's Number One, so on that basis, why would he want to move.

We could be witnessing Villa's best keeper of all time I think.

This is incredibly good news.  Not just because we're keeping one of the best keepers in the league, but if he is buying into the project so fully then it will surely encourage other players to do so too.

Now, isn't Paulo Dybala available on a free?

I do wonder if the fantastic support he got after his mistake on Saturday may have helped even if only in a very small way.  He seemed quite emotional at the end of the game.

After that cock-up on Sat, can't believe we've given him a new contract.

Could well have been Chris. The way he celebrated with the fans after the goal, then walked slowly to acknowledge the Holte End at the finale whistle. Cracking player and all round top bloke.

This is massive news. I’m fairly certain he was on the radar of the usual suspects and this just sends out the message “you can all fuck off, we’re coming for you.”

He clearly walked towards SG at the end and mouthed "Sorry Gaffer"  SG then puts his arms around him and all is forgotten

He does give most fans a level of confidence in each game, i bet its the same for the whole defence.

With Hause and now Martinez signing new contracts, that might suggest that there's hopefully been a few players who we've been discussing terms with and maybe we can expect to see a few more signing new deals.

This is brilliant news - I really was expecting him to move in the summer as he seems too good to not be playing in the champions league!

Fuck me - we really mean business

We do indeed. Next year could be very exciting indeed. If we keep Coutinho, having him and Martinez is a nice enticement for big name new players.

I told my wife - who hates football - but saw that mistake on Saturday - and she said exactly that

Absolutely delighted and as others have said... This may prove to be our best bit of business this window.

Not only is he an elite keeper, but you can genuinely see that he just "gets it" at Villa.
