You just need to look at how much was spent on strikers this season by everyone else and the returns from them to see that when Watkins was at his best, he was irreplaceable.

So who are the decent strikers we should replace him with?

Weird that nobody wanted to spend it on him.

We ought to ask whoever found Jhon Duran.

To argue Watkins hasn’t been a very good forward for us in his time at the club, is just a bit weird, he’s obviously been one of the best strikers in the league over a period of time.
We’re not creating enough chances for him, but by and large he hasn’t really looked that good for the last year, seem to be wobbled by the presence of both Duran then Rashford.
I think his confidence is incredibly low. There was a moment in the Go Ahead Eagles game when Sancho put in a lovely cross and Watkins didn’t make any effort to attack the space, that sums him up in terms of goal threat this season.
Ultimately, Im not sure what other options we have, Malen seems far better wider, so I’m not sure what other options we have, other than to hope Ollie comes good.

The only solution I see right now is playing Watkins and Malen together.

I don't think anyone is suggesting he hasn't done a good job for us. It's just that he was signed from the Championship to help keep us up, and he did that brilliantly. He hasn't been good enough for where we are for quite some time.

Ill give you Smirker, but take the point. He was our main man when we got into the champions league though so not just a keeping us up forward, but definitely has declined, not arguing over that.

It’s a massive problem
We’ve got a striker who isn’t scoring, people keep saying he’ll come good but it’s just not happening yet, he’s gone past his sell buy date for getting decent money for him and he’s probably in a bit of a sulk because he never got a move he wanted so looks a bit mardy

But there is a dearth in strikers Man Utd payed 73 million for a bloke who scored 13 goals in the German league, Kane has scored 12 already in that league
so there’s no obvious answers and it’s becoming a big concern for now and more importantly the future

We havent got the big money to spend and who would we spend it on anyway, there’s no youngsters coming through who look likely short term it’s a big problem

I have argued on the Martinez thread that I suspect Watkins was another player potentially told that he might be for sale which added to the rumours of Arsenal sniffing about last season may be preying on his mind still. Add to that the Ings/Rashford/Duran competition getting up his nose it seems he’s a bit of a sensitive soul. However he still our main and only centre forward so he needs to knuckle down and play his way out of the rut he’s in. He does seem to have the weight of the world on his shoulders? Has he got his Mrs up the duff again as that seems to have coincided with a couple of runs of poor form since he’s been here?

I think he is good enough for the team we currently are which is European qualifiers with potential for CL. The question comes as it did last season where were in the latter stages of the CL where Emery seemed to prefer Rashford. That can’t have been good for his seemingly fragile ego.

I think there is a player out there who can play Emerys system better than Watkins, we just haven’t found him yet. In the meantime he’s all we’ve got so on we go.

He can't control a football.
… and yet he is selected fairly regularly to play for England, who are fourth in the FIFA rankings. Wait til everyone finds out he’s actually shit!

Question for the excuse makers:

Ollie is on course for between 3-4 goals in the league this season if he carries on the way he is.

Should that happen are you still going to blame everyone else? Because there comes a point where no matter how true it is that the team doesn't create much, he simply has not been good enough.

No, I agree fully with that assessment so you can't give me to SE.

Watkins was good enough for mid table/top 7. He isn't good enough if we want to go further.

It's probably the most sane excuse for his current form. There should have been a clause in his last improved contract that he has the snip.
