Very clever of Man City really. They have a player they rate highly but can’t get a work permit (and probably feel he’s a year or two away from the first team) for. Sell him (sort of) but insert a buy back at x amount. See how he goes and then either leave him be, buy him back or buy him back and sell him on.

It's the standard procedure abroad. Barcelona do it with pretty much every young player they sell as already stated with Adama.

Dosen't mean they'll re-sign Douglas as they've signed Rodri who's a DM and will pretty much be Fernandinho's replacement in starting 11 but obviously option is there if they so desire.

Considering Jorginho only went to Chelsea because of the coach, they’ve probably got an interest there too. There will always be another De Jong or someone that they can go after first.

In fairness if Man City deem him a player they want back with all of the options they always have in terms of transfer targets then he’ll have done bloody well with us. And in any case hopefully by that stage, in 3 or 4 years time we will be a lot better off ourselves and competing consistently at the upper end of the table.

Or even selling with a buy back option 😎

You'd normally set the return fee significantly higher than what you originally paid.

So if we ended up "helping out City", that happened by him being so good for us that they want to give us a profit and he's given us enough good performances in our team to warrant that profit.

That sounds about right - according to Transfermarkt, Man City sold Angeliño to PSV for £5.5m last summer, and triggered his buy back clause for £12m a year later.

If Douglas has more than doubled his value having played for us for a year, we'll probably be happy with the deal regardless. Especially given the urgent squad building that has been necessary this summer.

We may never know but I’d be surprised if City built in a £15m uplift in the buy back clause.  It’s al guesswork but I’m not sure why they would agree that, particularly if this is essentially a work permit fiddle.

We're making news in Rio. One thing it does mention is that the buy back clause increases in value after every season.

I presume, like the Engels deal, that it's done, but we are waiting for international clearance? I also presume that he can train with the rest of the squad as they are abroad?

It would appear so. The article says that it's envisaged that he will travel to the US on Sunday to join Villa on their pre-season in the US.

Luiz looks a really exciting signing in a position we definitely need to recruit one if not two players.

I don't think Citeh are necessarily getting the best end of the deal either. They have a player they want/may want, but have no way for him to be involved with them other than through a sale with an option to buy-back.

That should give us decent leverage to not be screwed on the terms of the deal. Plus lots of people that seem to be well informed are suggesting that the sale overcomes the problem of the work permit (I've no idea on that).

As has been pointed out - another Brazilian as well as a former teammate in Engels, should also help Big Wes settle and we will need him firing from the outset.

Looks like another example of smart people working to an intelligent plan. UTV.

This is the vid to watch. Made me much more excited than a YouTube comp - that's some clips from his performance at the Bernabeu last season and just confirms that City really rate him.

I'm so excited about what Grealish and McGinn could do in combination with this fella.

Buy-back clause doesn't bother me at this stage. City are gonna sign Rodri this summer, were interested in Jorginho (as was mentioned above), and have so many top prospects coming through that there will constantly be other options .

If it does get to the point at where they are buying him back with a view to playing in their first team - he'd obviously be playing at a really high level for us and would likely have led us back to top half of the table, minimum. Very different to a loan which always has an in-permanent feel.

The Man City midfield when on song is the best in the country and possibly in Europe. So the level he has to play at, for Man City to even consider buying him back is very high indeed.

Another positive is that if he wants to go back there, the chances of him acting up and throwing a strop are fairly remote. The Man City dressing room is as professional as any that I can recall.
