When one of you figures out what on earth is going on inside Southgate's head when he's thinking about selections, you can move on to Eddie Jones.
His choices are even more bizarre
Southgate is not difficult to read, his strategy is based on his perception of low risk. He is fixated on stability and dependability. He does not like change, he is risk averse and does not have a creative or innovative bone in his body.

Eddie Jones is an egotistical nut job.

I can't fathom how any manager could deem any of those other centre backs better than Konsa. An argument could be made that Stones is in equally good form but none of the others are in the same class as Konsa including Mings let's be honest. Continuing to select the likes of Maguire, Coady and Dier will cost England big time as none of them have any pace on the turn.

He can count himself unlucky not to have been included. He really hasn't put a foot wrong since he's been a regular starter. A fantastic bit of business by Smith. Not just that £12m looks an absolute steal but his judgement that he could play at this level was spot on.

You can sort of make a case for Stones and Maguire, but Eric fucking Dire.

Smith said he would play for England when he first joined so he didn't just think he was good enough for this level.

Slightly tongue in cheek, but our last central defender, that got promoted to the full England squad, played very inconsistently for the following 6 months.......

Maybe Gareth thought picking three (four if Jack was fit) players from a midtable team may have been taking the piss.

Matt Cash got a namecheck too when asked why Alexander-Arnold had been left out too, citing how competitive the position is.

If asked, I bet Southgate would say something like he's on their radar and if he keeps playing as he is, it can only be a matter of time. San Marino  and Albania aren't going to be  much of a test for a centre back but are a great chance for a forward like Watkins. Maybe that's part of the thinking too. A short sighted one admittedly with the Euro's coming and defence being a big enough problem to lead to switching to playing 3 centre backs.

I'm impressed with our business. Just getting it all done. We're building chaps, we're growing...
