Premier League wise I,'ll never ever forget the goal at Spurs when we came back up to the Prem.
Sheer jubilation for me that one! Classic McGinn, and he announced himself to the league.

But will John McGinn score for Villa this season?

It is a team game, if he scores he scores. If he doesn't but puts in performances like he has recently, then others will score AND he will also have had a hand in stopping the opponents from scoring. He is not a striker, and contrary to what you are taking from some comments he has made, he is also not "our" main goal scoring source unlike when he plays for Scotland.

But it was McGinn who brought up the topic of goals for Villa, and it stands to reason that his international goalscoring exploits and the dearth of goals at club level will spark discussion and debate.
SJM is aware of the issue and sounds like he's aware of the topic being discussed by followers of Aston Villa and football people who notice the difference in goals at Club and Country level

I am sure it was a passing comment from him and not something he wanted to become a subject of great debate.

I don't think it has anything to do with anyone else discussing it, he's not stupid, he knows he used to score more.

He should be scoring more for us though, we all know that, including him. 43 games or whatever it is, without a goal is pisspoor.

He should have buried that chance away at Forest earlier in the season, he had the whole goal to aim at and got caught in two minds between heading and shooting. Might have been a minor Glen Whelan 'Sliding Doors' moment that, as if he had scored and we'd won, we'd have been 10th rather than 16th and it might have delayed/prevented the rage sacking a couple of games later, and we possibly might not have Unai now.

I expect he was "joking" that his team mates would jibe him that he hasn't scored. I doubt he was talking about items on fans sites. The only reason any of this has become a discussion is because someone was craving attention so decided to turn a throwaway line into some stupid point that if someone who plays for a small international side doesn't score against former World Champions, then they should not be playing for better club sides. People are not discussing Mcginn, they are discussing why someone has made stupid arguments.

BTW, if we get better players, we get better players. Which international side and who they happen to score against should be less of concern on whether they make us better or worse on the player being replaced.

He's been looking fitter and leaner and has performed well in recent matches for us.
Remember when we first arrived back in the Prem McGinn ahead of anyone was the one who looked most comfortable at the top level.

I'll just say no more and wait on outcome now on goals, but hopefully, he scores vs. Spain AND Chelsea! That would be Super.

Facts
SJM has appaeraed in 123 matches in the Premier League.
Started in 118 matches and scored 9 goals.

He has scored 3 goals each season in his 3 seasons at Prem Level.

He's now got over half as many goals for Scotland as League goals in his career. In the time it's taken him to score those 16 international goals he's scored 9 for us. I don't really know what to make of that fact. We should set up like Scotland?

The average Premier League team is a bit better than Cyprus, the Faeroes or Israel though.

Have you noticed against which defences he’s picked up those goals for Scotland though? Cyprus / Faeroe Island etc
Probably the equivalent of playing against Championship or League One

That miss summed up him, the manager he played for and the way he 'set up' the team at that time.

Confused and indecisive, a world away from what we've seen from McGinn this year.

It doesn't prove anything but it's also not to be sniffed at. There's plenty of higher rated midfielders that also play against these teams and don't have the same return, and they're not playing alongside Grant Hanley and Lyndon Dykes.

It was a terrible match. We did nothing but past it sideways over and over again between the midfielders, we had no cutting edge whatsoever.

Yeah, I just don't see him as a goalscorer. What he does in a Scotland shirt is hugely at odds with the rest of his career. One in close to eleven, be that with us or before. If he can bag three before season's end he'll maintain his typical average. If not, he'll have scored 3 fewer than he normally does in a season. No biggy.

Him alone not scoring is less of an issue with me than the dearth of goals from our regular 'back sevens', for want of a better term. 2 from defenders, 6 from Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Kamara and Dendoncker. Pitiful.
