I think people were over the top with their criticism last season. A number of times the way we insisted on playing the ball out from the back meant that McGinn would often be getting the ball facing the wrong way and with two opposition players closing him down. Nine times out of ten he'd wriggle his way out of trouble, usually utilising his Bravearse, but the one out of ten he wouldn't and would get massive stick on here.

This season, he seems to have gone backwards. Leggy in possession, prone to giving the ball away and struggling to have any impact further up the pitch. Not sure if anything to do with the captaincy but hope he sorts it out.

He is out of form and needs a break. It shouldn't be a big deal to rest a player.

You're right, it shouldn't. But then he went and made him captain.

Followed on from the weekend with another terrible performance last night, worst player on the pitch for me.

Tim came on and looked class. I would love to see Tim and Bouba v Spammers!

And then said it wouldn’t make him undroppable despite him getting picked every time despite looking dreadful for months.

What a mess. Was it worth all that mess with Mings to make him captain?

Definitely not captain material. Why would you put the class clown as head boy?

Wholehearted, a trier, would run through a brick wall for Aston Villa and probably why he was made captain. Sets a good example to others for work ethic.

Unfortunately, does not have the required quality. Lacks composure, finesse and a footballing brain. Reminds me of a 'spinning top' on speed. Too frantic.  Gives away possession to often, lost the scoring touch and a dodgy tackler.

McGinn, a top bloke but alas, not what we need in the starting eleven if we are to move forward.

Totally agree, we seem to have enough issues without Gerrard putting more pressure on himself by making McGinn captain. I think he had in mind that if McGinn lost form somewhere down the line it wouldn't be an issue dropping him. Realising now to drop him this this early makes his decision even worse.

I think this is why Gerrard being our Manager is worrying us as he should have realised that McGinn has been out of form for some time.

McGinn's stats are pretty damn good though, regardless of what people may feel they see.

From one-versus-one

He has scored 3 times after 38 match days in the season 2021/2022. This makes him the number 102 scorer in the Premier League so far. His conversion rate for shots to goals is 37.

John McGinn has 4 assists after 38 match days in the season 2021/2022. With these statistics he ranks number 41 in the Premier League. He also has a total of 26 chances created. With these statistics he ranks number 36 in the Premier League.

In season 2021/2022. He has won 57 aerial duels and 176 tackles. On top of this he made a total of 14 blocks. Based on these statistics after match day 38 he ranks on number 2 in the Premier League.

He is a Midfielder - Right central in Aston Villa. Within his team of Aston Villa he is currently ranked 1 best player of his team based on our 1vs1 Index Aston Villa.

Also.... McGinn won more tackles than any other Premier League player last season and won more fouls than anyone else bar Zaha. He was the 20th biggest threat going forwards too.

In summary he's an all-round player with a great attitude.

Part of the reason Mings lost it in my view is that he was top of the Yellow Card list last season (and his partner Konsa top of the Red Card list.)

Just quoting myself because these are last season's stats.

He may be off-form right now, but the above suggest he's a decent player and surely can't be ready for the knacker's yard just yet?

I'd also like to add that making him captain was probably based on that.

In the Premier League this season he's 4th for pass interceptions in the opponents half, 9th in successful tackles.

Going forward he's not faring very well....

Anyway, his stats are here https://one-versus-one.com/en/players/john-mcginn

Sometimes the ball is at his feet and he still doesn’t know where it is. Ends up bending over and going round in circles.
As others have said, I don’t think he looks right physically (although he looked a bit trimmer in the tunnel last night), but I know exactly what you mean and I’ve thought that he may have some balance/eyesight issues the way he’s been playing. Some of the challenges he was making last night were so clumsy that he looked half cut.

He seems to lack awareness and composure. Too often looks for the 'Hollywood' ball instead of simply retaining possession for the team.
A captain needs to be a calming influence (at times) not just continually pump the ball forwards.

Nail on head - he loses possession so often its embarrassing. His control makes Heskey look like Messi at times
