I do think Mings has been shit on to be honest, but I guess we will have to wait and see how McGinn takes to the role.

He will spend as much time on the bench as off it this season, as Chambers is a better player.

I also think he is a bit too divisive to be captain. Whilst many may appreciate his anti-tory rants, half the country and a large part of our fanbase don't. I think you need someone 1. mostly starting games. 2. Leader on the pitch. 3. Not controversial. Keep the headlines for the football skills.

Last good captain we had was probably Petrov. Not convinced McGinn should be a certain starter, but am hoping he is better with a more solid set of players behind him this season.

Eloquent intelligent black man, speaks out against racism and at times this ultra right wing Tory party, and this is ‘divisive’. If Mings offends some people I’m glad, the worlds a better place for his sort of divisiveness.
Tye captaincy i would guess is based on a number of factors and i would hope this is not one of them.
Agree with this, the country would be in a much better place with more people like Mings, and fewer idiots moaning about foreigners whilst dribbling into the Sun newspaper.

Agreed - always very proud to have him as a Villa player and Captain.  Think hes our most natural leader, and just a great (and ridclously handsome) human being .  Hopefully he'll still lead and be vocal, and Mcginn finds an extra gear like Grealish did as captain.

'Ultra right wing' tory party?!? Jesus, how times and brains have changed. Its probably the most centre left the tories have ever been. I did a politics degree in late 80's and early 90's, now that was when the tories were right wing.

No I said he’s been shit on, (by SG). I am a big fan of Mings and don’t think he should have had the armband taken off him.
Looks to me like SG clearly doesn’t rate him.

SJM has captained Scotland in Robertson's absence so there's obviously more admirers than just SG, though I do find it a bit odd that Mings plays no part at all. Suggests to me that Diego Carlos is here to replace him not play alongside him.

If you're looking for the obvious leader in the squad, it's Tyrone. Whatever you think of his playing ability, he has every attribute you'd want from a Captain both on and off the pitch. When we were on the Championship, I sat on the front row near the Holte vs Millwall at home and Mings didn't shut up the whole game. He's vocal, utterly professional and eloquent when he speaks.

It does seem like an unnecessary kick in the teeth to me, he's done very little wrong yet being dropped by England and now very publicly stripped of the Villa captaincy.  I'd say it's very likely that Chambers will partner Carlos at the back vs Bournemouth now. Mings and Konsa have been a great partnership for us for the most part. Football moves quickly sometimes.

Yeah - I think Mings and Konsa have struggled from having a disfunctional midfield ahead of them.  Both are poor on the ball, but very good defensively.

I cant understand how McGinn has done less wrong, they seem very similar to me in terms of ability and mistakes but Mings seems a much more natural leader.  Dont think either suit the way SG wants to play tbh.

For me its less about Mings or McGinn and more that it signals what SG has taken from his time in charge.

I think its the wrong call, but it is what it is.  Wasnt convinced when Grealish was made captain, but it was the right call - so well see.

Sorry Colin, I get you now.

I just think with the way we play, actually how most teams play out from the back, you need defenders more comfortable on the ball and Chambers and Carlos may fit that role much better than Mings.

Don't think it'll really change Mings' game much, but might bring something more out of McGinn.

It might be a great decision, I can't see a scenario where we're looking back on it as a terrible one.

I don’t think there was an obvious captain, the only 5 you’d say were pretty much nailed onto play are Martinez, Cash, Digne, Carlos & Kamara - 2 are new, full backs need to concentrate on bombing up and down the line & never convinced keepers make great captains.

Not sure being captain makes you undroppable…hopefully it makes him step up his levels & likewise the lack of captaincy let’s Mings concentrate more.

Not a meltdown decision for me…just a fairly logical one

Gareth hits nail on head, some of the comments on here are borderline hysterical especially from chief troll Fred.
