I don't disagree, Paul, but are we even looking for that type of player? Smith-Rowe seems to be more attack-minded and as we've made a bid, clearly we seem to want to improve more attacking options from midfield despite having Grealish and Buendia (and the two wingers).

Is it Ward-Prowse? Or could Sanson be that defensive option? From his Marseille highlights he likes a tackle, but it's too early in his Villa performances to say he could do that for us. I fear he's another bits and pieces midfielder and we are stock-piling that type - McGinn/Luiz/Ramsey/Hourihane (if he hangs around).

I worry that our midfield will look bloated in number with too many generalists and not enough specialists come the start of the season.

Before we write Sanson off let’s not forget what he can do

I'm a bit perplexed by JWP.  Excellent player as I think he is again I think he'd be more suited to the McGinn, Luiz, Sanson role.  I can't see him being happy being expected to be our main DM.

Upping the quality of the squad as a whole (occupying opposition defences) will give players like Sanson the chance to shine, perhaps more.

As far as I know, not sure we’re definitely interested. But I don’t think he’d be our DM if we did sign him.

I want us to have a strong squad with intense competition and minimal drop off in standards for injuries and suspensions. The type of squad that competes on four fronts and wins things. Like:

Martinez

Cash
Targett
Mings
Konsa

Bissouma
Ward-Prowse
McGinn

Buendia
Watkins
Grealish

Subs:
Steer
Young
Hause
Luiz
Smith-Rowe
Alvarez
Wesley
Chuck
Traore

That's a helluva line-up, if we could keep them all happy (although potentially light in defensive cover).
And, Ramsey, Barry, Ramsey Minor et al don't even make it until injuries / suspensions play a part.

I'd love it if we got Bissouma, Smith Rowe & JWP.  So are you a playing a 6 and two 8's or McGinn at 10?

If we got Smith Rowe he'd have to start at 10 for me.

I’d play a 6 and two 8s with those three (Bissouma, JWP & SJM). Mad pressing energy with Ollie and Buendia as well. ESR would play 10 when we change formation or 11 when Jack’s out.

I'd always play 2 8s but switch between a 6 or a 10 depending on the game (generally a 6 away and a 10 at home) I'd also consider some of the players as rotation options.

Seeing that again, maybe Sanson's best position is the Barkley role. He's technically good with both feet, can play and moves right across the front, lethal shooting from just outside the box, not afraid to drop back to pick up the ball and bring it forward and the complete opposite of Ross Barkley, loves to put a shift in. Maybe we've already got our 10.

The Smith Rowe link is great because it is a huge statement but I’d prefer that statement being applied to signing a decent DM.  Bissouma being an obvious candidate.

No issue with SJM staying, he ended the season pretty well after all.

One little issue I have though and I'd love some theories on.....why is he never ever subbed?

Pretty sure last season he wasn't taken off in a single game he started.

Can anyone understand the logic there? I mean it's an issue as McGinn tends to flag after 70 minutes with all the effort he puts in so we simply can't press that well if his energy levels are well down so inevitably we drop deep.

Is Dean scared to death we'd just collapse if we took him off when 1 up? Seems odd as for example we took Jack off after 70 minutes v Spurs given he was still in his comeback stage then and we held on comfortably for the win v 7th place finish. Luiz came on for him in that game IIRC and Nakamba was regulary on the bench last season so not like we hardly have any o.k midfield options to see games out, add Sanson back into the mix aswell.

Think this is where we need to get smarter next season. Have the guts to sub some of our key players off around 75/80th minute mark even if we're just a goal up as in the long run that should mean they're sharper come business end of the seasons when we always struggle to peak unless we're battling relegation.

The world won't end if McGinn is on the bench for a game or two which will happen sooner or later if we're targeting likes of Ward Prowse. He'll still do for now anyway as he's got plenty of credit in the bank.

He never looked that good at anything to me last season, bit of a utility player. But he came into the team midway through a season and had to adjust so no surprise.

I look at how much Nakamba, Targett and El Ghazi improved after the first season and hope we see the same uptick from Sansom. He was highly rated in France and played Champions League football, so you'd think theres more to come from him next season.
