Yeah, that was an old style Emery away performance. Get to half time, turn the crowd, win the game. Felt we'd win when we got to half time level.

Barkley looked good when he came on too. He was doing that for a while before his injury and didn't get much credit for it. Squad's looking stronger. Still concerned about the right side of attack though.

The second goal is potential goal of the season.

Agree on Barkley, great little cameo doing a lot of unseen work. I think the big difference between the teams was that our subs strengthed us, their were all a step down from the players they replaced, Richarlison and Bergvall in particular were utter dross.

I had a feeling for us today. Spurs have been over-hyped (same as it ever was), been pretty average at home, they had outscored their xG and were reliant on set-pieces.

We just needed to maintain our form since before the international break and Unai, working hard, with the lights likely still on til 2am at Bodymoor on midweek nights when his squad were spread across the world representing their nations, delivered another master-class.

Great result, especially going into the next two league games. And we shouldn't fear Man Citeh or Liverpool, they're not without their flaws too. Autumn 2025 = Autumn 2023 !

Great result and just what we needed.  Two real qualith goals and thought we kept Spurs under wraps pretty well.

Still think we gave the ball away far too often and cheaply at times and it's tantalising to think just what we could be capable of if we really click in the final third.

Re cyclical fashion and long-throws being back in, is there any reason why the defending team don't just stick a player a yard or two in front of the touchline and put the thrower off?

Ted Danson was getting some joy with his launchpads today for Spuds but I think it's illegal to allow one team to towel-dry their balls while the away side has to be left with damp, smudgy balls.

So Rogers goal was a goalkeeping error, and the second, a goal of the season contender, was only mentioned as it was unexpected. The Agony Aunt could have written a better football report than that.

Watkins and Rogers both returning to form now.
Buendia is like a new signing.
Martinez looking settled (but with stronger competition to keep him on his toes now).
We are conceding fewer goals than at any time during Emerys reign. Pau looking strong, Cash and Digne getting the balance right between defending and getting forward. As for Konsa, you hardly notice him - utterly dependable and doing everything right, as he has done for a quite a while.

to be fair we should be going to spurs and beating them its only the old inferiority complex that thinks a point at the lane would be good. They have been shit for seasons. no madders, romero pulled out during the warm up and their new manager bounce is now on the wane. Still enjoyed the game and was delighted with the goals and the 3 points.
Emi made a big impact from the bench

Wait! That would've been a London top two for good measure. You'd think some would've mentioned it.

Really strange game for me. Thought we both massively rode our luck (if they'd had Kane or even Son...) and thoroughly deserved it.

Pau superb and Cash shoving the boos where they belong. Digne took a battering, so delighted he was able to do that before going off.  I'm probably still a bit giddy, but that might be the best Villa goal I've been there for. I've been a very erratic attendee but still.

My favourite bit is the claim that their football is exciting and energetic, when in truth it's wimbledon/stoke-esque long balls to run on to and an over-reliance on set pieces. The myth of the spurs 'way' is clearly still going strong.

Great goals, both of them.

Thought Pau, Konsa and Cash were excellent today, as was Kamara.

Rogers, aside from the goal not the best still.  I thought Digne had an unusually poor game as well.

On the statistics (which I know isn't everything) today seems to be pretty 'on-brand' for how they've been playing all season. I'd never watch them in a game we're not playing in though so maybe I'm missing something.

The goal was three moments of absolute premium quality interwoven into the finest of silk.

When Digne laid the ball off to Buendia, I said to myself "please score", not because I wanted the lead, but because the preceding play DESERVED a goal.

A great goal,by Morgan Rogers,  kept us in the game.
Second half we were much better especially when Emi and Ollie came on for Donyell and Guessand.
(Think I’d rather have Bailey than Guessand as he seems the weak link).
The Cash, Digne , Emi goal was superb, a joy to watch, and Matt has had a very good season so far.

Looks like Unai is now working his magic with his team again.

to be fair we should be going to spurs and beating them its only the old inferiority complex that thinks a point at the lane would be good. They have been shit for seasons. no madders, romero pulled out during the warm up and their new manager bounce is now on the wane. Still enjoyed the game and was delighted with the goals and the 3 points.
Emi made a big impact from the bench

I've always felt like it's been a game over the years to measure where we are really.  If we are in a decent place we tend to win there and when we're struggling we don't.

There’s nothing quite like stuffing it up Spurs when all the pre game talk is about them going 2nd with the win they were clearly going to get. Fuck you and your bias.

The goal we conceded was very avoidable if we showed a bit more positivity going forward with the ball. I get it’s part of our game plan early on to keep possession as much as possible but it invites pressure when we screw up as proved. Good games for everyone with Digne being my MOM for the pull down for Emi’s goal and his general game against their best player. He was also a soldier for the way he responded to some very heavy tackles. Rogers’s best game for us this season so far.

Apparently we agreed to the use of towels? What we didn’t agree to was those throws were foul ones. Feet over the line mostly.

Lovely win. It reminded me a bit of the 2-0 on new years day in Unais first season. Soak up the pressure for first 50 odd minutes, then pick them apart.
As Monty said earlier in the thread Brazilesque 2nd goal…though I’d go for the class of WC 82.
Thought Rogers and bizarrely Digne got kicked all over the park today…do we keep on booing Danso for the next 10 years?
Anyway watched the game on a phone, whilst standing in the pissing rain watching my lads team. They won a scrappy affair 3-2, with the final whistle going on both games at the same time. Home to dry off, a lovely lasagne and hot cup of tea..a good Sunday to be alive!!

Probably not the time to be picking faults after such a good result, but he is one of a few who just gives the ball.away too easily and too often when we are going forward.  Can't knock his work-rate and the defensive side of his game though.

We defended well, winning header after header in our own box.  Onana, Konsa were particularly good, as was Torres with the ball at his feet.  Lovely pass from Cash and brillianr from both Digne and Buendia for the winner. I honestly fancies us today as I don't think Tottenham are that good a side.  Great win, feels good.

The ability of Torres to get accurate, well weighted passes into the front 3 or 4 was again on show today.

come the moment, come Rogers.
Second half, they huffed and puffed for 10 mins, then the Goal of the season. Three perfect moves, Cash , Digane, Emi.
After that they huffed and puffed again.
Great game management, call out for Ollie and Barkley for their cameos
Beat city next week and we are back on track

Fantastic away performance. Hung in after going a goal down and worked our way back into the game. Our two goals were both fantastic. The second one in particular was one of our best goals in a number of seasons in terms of the skills shown. Onana grew into the game after a slow start. Everyone did their bit. We still need to create more, as great as it is we can't keep relying on a couple of outside the area crackers. Once we do that we'll be a hell of of a side.

Agree on that point. We still haven’t found that gear yet, but hopefully it comes with more confidence.

Struggling to sort the gold, silver and bronze rankings for:

A) Matty Cash's 70 yard drilled half volley pass

B).Lucas Digne plucking the ball out of the air at almost head height and then flicking it back almost in one movement

C) Emi Buendia cutting inside and tucking one away in the far corner from outside the area with his weaker foot

We are slowly gaining momentum, the bench played its part today and good to see players coming back. My only concern is without Mings we seem vulnerable from corners or any high ball into the box. The new players didn't get minutes, looking forward to see how Emery handles Sancho, if he can get this lads head in the right place we might have a good player.

Haha, me too! My boy’s team won 4-1 in a 2.30 kick off. I was watching on my phone but I felt a bit neglectful so switched to listening on 5Live instead. In the time it took to go from watching to listening, Buendia got our winner.

Lamb kebab, rice and peppers for dinner, and a hot cup of tea. Lovely!
My lads 15 and I’ve been to virtually every game since he was 6, so Ill give myself a break.
Sounds like the perfect Sunday as well Perce.

I’ve just remembered, isn’t Cash public enemy number one at Spurs for a challenge on their tough guy Romero?
Its pathetic that they still boo him over a bad tackle that happened two seasons ago. Geordie levels of grudge holding.

Yeah me too. But Ben Mee is a malicious thug who deliberately sets out to inflict possible career ending injuries. I can't remember Cash's tackle on Romero but I doubt it was deliberate or malicious.

McGinn, Cash prepared to send a 70 yard pass down the right. There's good control in from Lucas Digne. Oh, it must be and it is! It's Emiliano Buendia.
Some great comments on MOTD from Shay Given, 'gets better each time you watch it...best goal I've seen this season...world class..it's a PlayStation goal...

Fair play to Shay, he gave it plenty of praise. Obviously I enjoyed the goal and the win it brought, but it reminded me of one of those TikTok videos where a guy kicks a coke bottle off two walls and a fridge before it drops in the bin.

Another (pitchside) angle for Emi's goal. https://x.com/AVFCOfficial/status/1980016101602755002

C was mightlily impressive and was the easy part.

For me it’s the 2nd Digne touch - less eye catching but the awareness to pop it directly back into Buendia’s path. 👨‍🍳😘

Agreed, without Digne's ridiculous first touch, Cash's pass is over hit.

Bartley was certainly a surprising sub to bring on 😀 Bogarde you would assume would have been on there for Onana. Emery seems to have been very impressed with Watkins efforts off the bench, he's usually shite/sulky when coming on.

I suspect it is because previously he has been dropped to the bench when fully fit where he knew this time was because of still suffering effects from the collision during the internationals. But MOTD showed the work rates for both him and Lil Emi after they came on.

Bentancur reminds me of Hourihane a bit. A passenger in midfield off the ball but a good knack for scoring from deep.

All our lads ball-watched as he made himself available for his goal yesterday.
Without the deflection off Onana, it looked like it was heading straight to Martínez so they had enough good fortune yesterday without claiming we were lucky.

Our two wide men were more at fault for me. Guessand put no pressure on the cross going in to start with and Rogers is big and bold enough to deal with that ball in the air. Once it comes back towards the penalty spot it usually favours the attacker..

OK, i’ve had 24 hours to think about it and I’m now calling it

I’ve been watching Villa live since 1975 and I reckon little Emi’s goal yesterday is one of the best if not the best I’ve ever seen Villa score
It had so many facets to it It was football perfection.

The ridiculous ball from Cash is an unbelievable bit of skill on its own, then the takedown from Digne is prime Bergkamp then the superb little flick, the execution from Buendia is pinpoint accurate and from outside the box
You might not see anything as good as that again as long as you live

If someone made a football film and put that sequence in everyone would say nah that could never happen in real life it’s unrealistic

I think we might have just seen the best goal we’ll ever see

I never knew that. Sad face.

Yes we were, so too Bissouma, who has also flattered to deceive there.
I was surprised Bentancur hadn't scored more for Spurs because he does have a decent shot on him and is good at arriving into space in the box. He's lightweight though and I'm glad we didnt go for him.

Got to say, I think Bailey's goal against Man City is right up there. Nearly the whole team involved and against one of the best sides there's ever been. Just icing on top of a fantastic performance too.

But this was pure eye candy. Who does Cash think he is! I love that he has the cohones to even attempt that pass. Wonderful technique. And I couldn't be happier for Buendia. I so hope he continues to grow in importance for us.

Quite possibly the best result of the season Nelly

Timing wise it is quite critical too as it continues our upward trajectory and allows us to look up now table wise.

When you look at the next three fixtures too it’s even more of a positive as we have City,Liverpool and Bournemouth

Man City and Liverpool will be hard games but we’ll have chances.  Bournemouth have had a great start but are they’re of a defensive unit relying on the break? If so, that could be a harder game.

The deflection on Bailey's goal ruined it, deflections are evil.

Far better, possibly even than Buendia's, was our total team goal three days after Bailey's, when McGinn finished a back to front move to beat Arsenal at VP.

As Alan Partidge nearly said about Bravo 2 Zero - it gets better with every watch.

It was a great goal because there's not much Spurs could've done better to stop it. All my favourite goals (that aren't thunderc**ts from 30 yards, which is a separate category) are the ones where the opposition are turned into bystanders because so many goals are down to poor defending it's nice to sometimes have nothing negative to say and just be able to admire something spectacular.

Are we really saying Cashie is the new Sid? It was good but...

Of course not, but he played a pass that was up there with the best by anyone, including Sid.

So is a Villa player finally going to win goal of the season? Its about time, Tone and Dalian's efforts were so long ago. Duran's thundercvnt against Everton should have got it last season.

Indeed not. They cleared their lines effectively on 2 phases. McGinn even advises/instructs Cash to pass back to Emi. Digne had dropped deeper and Cash spotted just enough space behind their defender - pin point accuracy. Digne 1st touch matches the pass and 2nd totally takes defender out. Emi dummies with the first touch and the finish was exquisite. No keeper stops.

It won't even be goal of the month.

The fourth time we've beaten these away from home since promotion. Three of them were 2-1 wins, after falling behind.

Remember when these were our bogey side (along with a few others)?
