Phew
-
Kelkyman in the squad is interesting, seems Emery was as impressed as we were.
-
In Emery terms that strikes me as a cautious line-up - not necessarily defensive, just maybe a gameplan with a lot of focus on stopping the opposition.
Which is fair enough.
-
That's not a bad looking bench. Once Moreno and Ramsey are back we're going to look very strong.
-
From 2 keepers on the bench to 0 keepers on the bench (before anyone else says it 😂)
-
Phew
Exactly what I just said out loud 😂
-
Is that a back three with two wing backs?
-
Kelkyman in the squad is interesting, seems Emery was as impressed as we were.
Probably, but is there anyone else to fill the bench?

Looks like the same as last week to me.
-
Emi's a welcome sight, he has never looked better.
-
Like that line up. Don’t lose please.
-
I can Digne and Cash giving them hell.
Good line up for a tough away game.
-
Is that a back three with two wing backs?
I think Konsa RB with Cash in front of him.
-
Diaby and Ollie to run them ragged for 60 minutes and then we bring on Zaniolo and Durán to kill them off.
-
anyone going for a swim?
-
Great news about Emi, hopefully the Polish Cafu has got his shooting boots on!
-
I despise this fixture...
-
Is that a back three with two wing backs?
Yes. Think of them as marauding goal making machines.
-
anyone going for a swim?
Most definitely, will share once I've got my togs on
-
Think we will win with a late funeralty.
-
From the Beeb
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking before the match against Liverpool, about Emiliano Martinez's return to the starting XI: "For us no.1 is Emiliano. Hopefully he can have the same performance we had last week with Olsen."
On Matty Cash playing right wing: "He was a winger when he was coming through at Nottingham. He played as a winger and we use him sometimes as a right-back but he can play as well as a winger. And Bailey played on Thursday. We have a lot of matches and we need to use every player and today is Cash."
On the test of coming to play Liverpool away: "Always Anfield is difficult and a big challenge. We want to play the matches at a high level and we are going to face one of the best teams in the Premier League. We want to try and impose our style and here I am very excited to watch us against them."
-
Is Bert injured?
-
Is Bert injured?
most of his career
-
Is Bert injured?
No. He's thinking.
-
Is Bert injured?
most of his career
Yes. Saw it on the match pack part of the official site earlier. Didn't specify other than he was added to Mings, Moreno etc.
-
On the test of coming to play Liverpool away: "Always Anfield is difficult and a big challenge. We want to play the matches at a high level and we are going to face one of the best teams in the Premier League. We want to try and impose our style and fuck the fuckers."
-
Gomez in for them. He probably still has nightmares about 7-2 and Ollie Watkins.
On paper, a decent Villa side and bench. Let's hope we do it on the pitch.
-
anyone going for a swim?
If this means you want a stream, I'll send you a link mate.
If it means that you want to avoid the match, I'm doing the same. I almost never watch this one. Hate them, hate Anfield, and everything connected to it/them. Commentary will be a sperm bank. Klopp and his shit tracksuit can fuck off.
Will still send you a stream if you want one, though 😂
Come on you Villa boys!
-
Concourse now twice as big, which is nice. And 5G, which is mad.
-
Thought Endo might have started for them to try and negate our midfielders.
Sound be a good game this.
-
Is that a back three with two wing backs?
Yep, same setup as v Burnley
-
Are there any trickles please?
-
Can anyone cry me a river as well? Cheers
-
Likewise, would love to spend a couple of hours by a river this afternoon
-
I guess we'll soon find out if the Newcastle game was just a bad day at the office. Hopefully Watkins can find his PL shooting boots, he normally does well against this lot. If we can win the midfield battle we're in with a chance. Big test for Carlos and Torres. Time to really show what they're about.
-
anyone going for a swim?
Most definitely, will share once I've got my togs on
I'd like to come too please?
-
I imagine Cash is in to pin Robertson back
-
Concourse now twice as big, which is nice. And 5G, which is mad.
I misread 5G as SG and was getting angry.
-
FTF.
-
May I have a river from one of you please?
-
Hmmmm
-
1-0 down, from us being slack leading to a corner
-
I hate these twats. Hope we fuck em up.
It'll probably be the other way round though. And no doubt we'll have to listen to the pundits furiously masturbating over "Trent".
-
Not the best start.
-
Needless corner given away
-
I hate 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'.
-
Fuck off.
-
Not good defending
-
The worst possible fucking start. On Torres too.
-
FFS!
-
Pau will have to learn fast
-
Useless
-
Oh happy days
-
Gifted
-
Last thing we needed to do was to give them a head start. Come on Villa, fight you feckers.
-
God, I hate playing these f*ckers at Anfield.
-
Last thing you want is to concede an early goal to these. Gotta take the sting out of this now or we could get battered.
-
Garbage from Torres
-
This is the worst start I can remember under Emery. We are miles off it
-
We're capable of scoring a couple but can't see us not conceding again. Defence was always a worry.
-
Absolutely fucking infuriating.
-
I'm afraid we look like flat-track bullies at present...
-
In case anyone wants to see it, their goal
https://twitter.com/ElzerMalin92372/status/1698320768822652997
-
These always play like they're on speed for the first 20 minutes. Need to contain them.
-
Finally an attack
-
I hate these wankers.
-
I’m really struggling to see the ball in the shadows and sunlight
-
These always play like they're on speed for the first 20 minutes. Need to contain them.
It must be all that "asthma" medication.
-
Diaby with two excellent runs so far
-
Better the last few minutes
-
That would've been a beautiful goal if Diaby could've squared to Watkins.
-
I’m really struggling to see the ball in the shadows and sunlight
We are playing with the sun in our eyes.
-
Had to mute the commentators. Embarrassing
-
What a shock, an injury.
-
I’m really struggling to see the ball in the shadows and sunlight
We are playing with the sun in our eyes.
I'm sure it was a Liverpool tactic
-
Carlos down
-
not another bloody injury
-
Looks like he knows he’s coming off
-
Shit, Diego is down.
-
Bailey on for Carlos it seems.
-
Diego looks gone.
-
Fucks sake another injury
-
Bailey on
-
Bailey as well. I know he was good against Everton but my God do I not back him against these, I'm sorry to say.
As for the injuries...I don't know what to say.
-
Oh, I thought it was strange that we'd gone a week without someone being injured. Normal service is resumed.
-
These injuries are getting ridiculous.
-
I love the size of Emery's bollocks.
-
Poor guy. Hope it’s not bad.
-
I'm angry. Why are our players dropping like flies?
-
Bailey away. No.
-
How bad did it look?
-
Well thank fuck we got lenglet in
-
2-0 Cash OG
-
“I think Konsa will probably be smiling inside because he’s back where he wants to be..”
WTF kind of comment is that to make after an injury?!
-
Fucking hell.
-
How bad did it look?
You can never tell
He walked off
0 2
-
No we have our best winger and top scorer playing RB, ridiculous!
-
Back to our forelock tugging best
-
Horseshit
-
FFS!
-
Shit, shit, shit playing too high today.
-
This is every bit as bad as Newcastle. Sort it the fuck out.
-
Was he offside
-
Not much Cash can do about that
-
Looked off?
-
Think I might go sit in the garden instead
-
Shocking defending.
-
Lets concentrate on Europe
-
I fucking hate this lot with a passion only equalled by my hatred for manure.
-
Play someone decent
Newcastle, get it wrong, lose a CH, get battered
Liverpool, get it wrong, lose a CH.....
-
2-0 Cash OG.
-
This is going to be a long afternoon
-
Bailey you w⚓
-
A bit worrying that the two times we have met competent opposition we've failed to show up.
-
Torres again. Lost his man, Nunez, giving him the keys to Anfield. Pathetic.
-
Why are we either magnificent or utterly abysmal? Have we no middle gears at all?
-
I swear most of the goals we’ve conceded over the past few years have been mainly gifted to the opposition.
-
Show us the fucking lines you twats.
I'm not saying anything dodgy is going on but don't pick and choose.
I'm angry. We haven't even started.
-
We haven't turned up have we.
-
This is just like the bad old days.
-
Bailey is utterly shit, jogging around like defending is beneath him.
-
Fuck it all.
Honestly, flat-track bullies this season. We haven't looked as good as we thought because we were honestly playing three sides as bad as we're going to face this season. Much, much, much work to do.
-
2-0 Cash OG.
Keeps his recent scoring run going....
-
I am just going outside and may be some time.
-
Is that not offside?
-
Let’s just kick these c**ts off the park now.
-
I absolutely hate Liverpool, hate them!
-
Not sure where Pau was for that goal. This was the worry, it was hard to judge how good our defence would be after them not being tested against joke teams, we look all over the place here.
-
This is just really bad.
-
I thought Salah was offside but no replay with VAR lines again.
-
A game to forget so far.
-
Why are we either magnificent or utterly abysmal? Have we no middle gears at all?
Look at the opposition.
-
Need to see some character now in this team.
-
However good the transfer window was, we shouldn’t be lining up with a right back on the wing.
-
Not sure where Pau was for that goal. This was the worry, it was hard to judge how good our defence would be after them not being tested against joke teams, we look all over the place here.
About 3 yards behind his man
-
Show us the fucking lines you twats.
I'm not saying anything dodgy is going on but don't pick and choose.
I'm angry. We haven't even started.
I thought he looked off from the ball from TAA
-
Looks like we are going to be flat track bullies this season.
-
2-0 goal
https://twitter.com/ElzerMalin92372/status/1698325378995982757
-
Bailey is utterly shit, jogging around like defending is beneath him.
Yep. He should have been sold.
-
Why are we either magnificent or utterly abysmal? Have we no middle gears at all?
Look at the opposition.
Yeah but we could lose to Liverpool by playing well too.
-
This is painful
-
Where the fuck are our midfielders?
-
Bailey is utterly shit, jogging around like defending is beneath him.
Given away possession first two times with no fight, head already down. Terrible sub
Torres having a horror show. Watkins and Kamara haven't shown up either.
-
Anymore and we're into damage limitation.
-
Definitely offside. They didn't show more than the shot which came off the post. The pass for that shot was from an offside position
-
Can we bring off Bailey already? I'm sorry, he looked OK against some inadequate opposition but he's completely out of his depth.
-
They're carving us open at will. We look very fragile at the back
-
Torres looks too slow and weak for this league. Nowhere near his man again for that free kick.
-
Should've been 3, free header
-
Worst performance under Emery by a mile. Loads worse than the Newcastle game in which we played some lovely football and had loads of chances. This is embarrassing.
-
I’m going to cut the grass or something more fun than this.
-
It wasn't offside, I just slowed down PWS's post.
-
When will Bailey suddenly injure his back.
-
Show us the fucking lines you twats.
I'm not saying anything dodgy is going on but don't pick and choose.
I'm angry. We haven't even started.
I thought he looked off from the ball from TAA
Looked it but can't tell without the lines. I don't like how they pick and choose.
-
Not sure why Ollie Watkins was playing everyone onside at that free kick.
-
Struggling with the Thursday - Sunday?
-
Dicking around with it at the back is not wise against a good team away from home.
-
30% possession, no shots at all.
-
Paul having a mare
-
We've shown absolutely nothing so far. We've just made it so easy for them.
-
Plenty of time to get back into this and we are capable of scoring twice.
-
Tune in, see score, read here, tune out.
Nevermind - it’s like we have performance nerves against teams like this
-
Pau I mean
-
nice play from Diaby
-
WTF Torres. Jesus.
-
Pau needs a bollocking at half time. Wake up ffs.
-
Pau I mean
His pal who makes compilations of his performances is going to be busy tonight.
-
Glutton for punishment me but does anyone have any interesting rivers to look at, mine's just dried up.
-
Plenty of time to get back into this and we are capable of scoring twice.
When the drugs don’t work.
-
Finally a shot!
-
Pau needs a bollocking at half time. Wake up ffs.
I’d bring Chambers on. Torres needs to know that this isn’t remotely good enough.
-
Should have buried it
-
When are we playing Hibs again?
-
Good chance missed villa
-
ive got a river pm me
-
And then nearly concede a 3rd
-
When are we playing Hibs again?
We're playing like Hibs.
-
McGinn you've got to hit the fucking target!
-
Pau again rubbish
-
Watkins not on it
-
FFS McGinn, has to get that on target.
-
McGinn should have done much better with that.
-
Glad I’m off match thread duty
-
Great chance we should've made more of that. Diaby looking lively.
-
I think we've found our level. Beat the shit, lose to the better sides. Twas ever thus. We had a great window but this is why I wanted another defensive midfielder.
-
Ffs McGinn
-
Glad I’m off match thread duty
Ha ha!
-
Pau needs a bollocking at half time. Wake up ffs.
I’d bring Chambers on. Torres needs to know that this isn’t remotely good enough.
Agreed. His head looks fried. Keeps on doing it.
-
Pau having a nightmare.
-
Diaby pretty much the only one playing well so far
-
Come on Watkins
-
Sod this. The sun's out, I'd rather cut the lawn.
-
Get Zaniolo on to rough them up a bit.
-
Looks like not-very-effective McGinn has turned up today. And Kamara is having a nice Sunday in the park strolling around. Just not on it.
-
I think we've found our level. Beat the shit, lose to the better sides. Twas ever thus. We had a great window but this is why I wanted another defensive midfielder.
We needed a forward. Watkins is well off it. Going to gave to go some to get 20 goals now.
-
Obviously extremely early days with him here but Pau reminds me a bit of John Stones. Can look graceful on the ball, can be a defensive car crash.
-
Torres looks too slow and weak for this league. Nowhere near his man again for that free kick.
I suspected as much. Weird signing. Early days though, maybe he’ll improve.
-
Diaby pretty much the only one playing well so far
Digne not doing to bad and i say that not being his biggest fan
-
Paul having a mare
I'd sub him if we had somebody to replace him with. Can the fella on loan from Barca be any worse?
-
Torres looks too slow and weak for this league. Nowhere near his man again for that free kick.
I suspected as much. Weird signing. Early days though, maybe he’ll improve.
I don't think it was a weird signing, he just wasn't supposed to be playing as much as he has so soon.
-
Another chance wasted
-
We’ve got Zaniolo to frighten them in the second half. Or earlier.
-
Sod this. The sun's out, I'd rather cut the lawn.
Don't blame you. I'm popping out to the washing line to check if any clothes are dry. This is a nightmare!
-
Twat
-
Ffs another chance
-
Liverpool hit the bar. Another defensive shambles.
-
We are missing Jacob Ramsey in this game.
-
I wanted a statement performance today. We haven't beaten anyone half decent yet.
-
Cut my grass yesterday. Doh!
-
They have to score that
-
Bailey seems to have this weird technique or tendency to not connecting/slicing his shots.
-
It's back to the good old days of the mid-nineties, when we'd just turn up and let these get two or three without reply.
-
We are creating chances now. Come on!
-
Bailey. Fuck sake.
-
what an awful miss
-
We look alarmingly fragile at the back
-
Sloppy as fuck
-
Cut my grass yesterday. Doh!
I’m on holiday, might see if Rudy needs his grass cutting.
-
Bailey is brainless.
-
Torres is having an absolute Ugo debut* of a game. Horrific.
* I know.
-
This is a major rude awakening for Torres. Hopefully he can adapt and get better.
-
Hod on earth did he not flag that offside
-
Cut my grass yesterday. Doh!
I’m on holiday, might see if Rudy needs his grass cutting.
I'll join you. Peroni?
-
For as shite as we've been we still look dangerous going forward, but an utter disaster at the back.
-
Hod on earth did he not flag that offside
Anfield.
-
Fuck this, I'm on holiday too! Pub.
-
Cut my grass yesterday. Doh!
I’m on holiday, might see if Rudy needs his grass cutting.
I'll join you. Peroni?
Yes please.
-
Torres is having an absolute Ugo debut* of a game. Horrific.
* I know.
He will adapt. Patience
-

I'll join you. Peroni?
Yes please.
Biscuits. Admin.
-
I think it's now pretty clear that the way to get at us is long balls and lots of pace up front. They aren't doing anything clever here, and don't have to because we're giving them too much time to look up and pick out those long balls.
-
We'll come back into this in the second half.
-
Cut my grass yesterday. Doh!
I’m on holiday, might see if Rudy needs his grass cutting.
I'm off to count the stones in the calçada in the pavement. This is not how I planned to spend my Sunday afternoon.
-
We'll come back into this in the second half.
;D
-
The odd bit of decent attacking play amongst the car crash defending.
-
Unai needs to see who he can and can't trust. And unfortunately a lot of them we looked at ourselves as fans: Cash, Bailey, even Watkins really. Just aren't looking good enough for top level aspirations.
-
Really bloody bad.
-
Torres is having an absolute Ugo debut* of a game. Horrific.
* I know.
He will adapt. Patience
He's so slow, playing him in a high line is asking for trouble. Would take him off but Lenglet is probably as slow
Diaby and Luiz have been excellent
-
We miss Mings so much.
-
Diaby is our one shining light
-
Unai needs to see who he can and can't trust. And unfortunately a lot of them we looked at ourselves as fans: Cash, Bailey, even Watkins really. Just aren't looking good enough for top level aspirations.
Correct on all counts.
-
Crap from Diarby
-
Unai needs to see who he can and can't trust. And unfortunately a lot of them we looked at ourselves as fans: Cash, Bailey, even Watkins really. Just aren't looking good enough for top level aspirations.
This is why we will need another couple of windows as we put Monchi to work.
-
Liverpool at home have 1 defeat in 43 and won last 13 I think the commentator just said. So losing here isn't a disaster but we look hopeless at the back without Mings, just like we did last season when he didn't play.
-
I think that's the first time I've heard Watkins' name mentioned. He really isn't good enough.
-
We miss Mings so much.
Absolutely.
-
We'll come back into this in the second half.
;D
Have faith.
-
Liverpool at home have 1 defeat in 43 and won last 13 I think the commentator just said. So losing here isn't a disaster but we look hopeless at the back without Mings, just like we did last season when he didn't play.
It's not the losing, it's the manner in which we're doing it.
-
I think that's the first time I've heard Watkins' name mentioned. He really isn't good enough.
He is not.
-
Please no 10 minutes of injury time. Get them off, give them a bollocking, make some subs.
-
Bloody ex Liverpool commentary
-
I think Konsa is only half the player when he doesn't have Mings playing next to him.
-
Dougie has been our best player by far.
-
Unai needs to see who he can and can't trust. And unfortunately a lot of them we looked at ourselves as fans: Cash, Bailey, even Watkins really. Just aren't looking good enough for top level aspirations.
Correct on all counts.
Problem with Watkins in the end isn't even the finishing - it's the touch. Just doesn't have the instinctive technique and close control for this football. It's a shame, as I like him for so much of what he does, but just compare him to that child Ferguson yesterday...he just doesn't quite look like he belongs.
-
Had three chances that weren't even on target
-
Like a training session for 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'
-
Dougie has been our best player by far.
That's because he's signing for Liverpool in January. Joke.
-
How was that not a foul to Cash? His shirt was nearly pulled off his back.
-
We can score against these, whether we can stop them scoring more is another matter.
-
I think Konsa is only half the player when he doesn't have Mings playing next to him.
He’s having a decent game which can’t be said of our other centre half
-
Nowhere near aggressive enough in both boxes today.
-
Liverpool at home have 1 defeat in 43 and won last 13 I think the commentator just said. So losing here isn't a disaster but we look hopeless at the back without Mings, just like we did last season when he didn't play.
It's not the losing, it's the manner in which we're doing it.
I agree, but we gave them a goal with a defensive mess and that pretty much set the tone. Then lost yet another player to injury. I'm trying to look on the bright side, but it's difficult!
-
How was that not a foul to Cash? His shirt was nearly pulled off his back.
Especially when he was given a yellow card for the slightest of contact.
-
The ref there was looking directly at Diaz grabbing handfuls of Cash's shirt and gave nothing.
-
I agree, but we gave them a goal with a defensive mess and that pretty much set the tone. Then lost yet another player to injury. I'm trying to look on the bright side, but it's difficult!
Giving them a goal isn't generally a positive thing though?
-
Hopefully the second half will be better. Should have scored, but should probably have conceded more.
-
Unai needs to see who he can and can't trust. And unfortunately a lot of them we looked at ourselves as fans: Cash, Bailey, even Watkins really. Just aren't looking good enough for top level aspirations.

That's exactly it. He's done incredibly well, and worked his nads off, to get where he is. But nothing in this game is natural to him.
-

Need a massive performance in the 2nd half to salvage some dignity, at the very least. I said before that I'd take a last ditch draw if it was us coming from behind to nick a point, so that's still on, maybe.
-
We've been complete s*** tbh.
My big fear pre match was no Mings for this type of occasion and it's been a game to forget for Pau so far to put it mildly.
At least we strung together a few decent moves end of the half but Liverpool could easily score 3 or 4 here.
There's a reason they've lost once in the last 40 odd at home and you simply can't concede to them in first 10 minutes and expect a result.
-
Boooooo!
-
Dreadful half. Awful.
-
Unai needs to see who he can and can't trust. And unfortunately a lot of them we looked at ourselves as fans: Cash, Bailey, even Watkins really. Just aren't looking good enough for top level aspirations.
Correct on all counts.

If only Watkins could finish like Archer
-
Hopefully the second half will be better. Should have scored, but should probably have conceded more.
Agreed. Think we've looked OK with the ball but all over the shop without it.
-
Reality check
-
Might as well do away with the offside rule if it's only used occasionally.
-
Hope that wasn't our good half.
-
Really thought performances like this were behind us
-
For the chance I just think Ollie was expecting Bailey to reach it first so simply wasn't set to strike it properly. It happens. Was another fantastic cross from Digne.
McGinn was the bigger miss, have to be getting it on target at least.
-
Extremely poor from everyone - including (not often you say this) Emery. The starting lineup is wrong, the shape was wrong (completely overrun in midfield), and when he went to correct it thanks to the injury he brought on a player so utterly useless you wonder if he's been bribed.
Stop trusting those who don't deserve it, Unai. They were horrible against Newcastle and they're horrible again today. You don't owe them shit.
-
Absolute garbage - Torres beyond crap. Liverpool have thankfully decided to treat it as a training session instead crushing us like Newcastle did.
That better be our bad half.
-
Our high line is killing us with the amount of time their midfield has to pick a pass.
-
We really struggled with the pace they came forward. Grim.
-
Really thought performances like this were behind us
Man. United lost 7-0 at this venue last year.
I think at places like Anfield you can talk about technical quality all you like but who's actually talking in that backline as Pau certainly isn't and Konsa has never been that talkative at CB.
End of last season Mings marshalled the backline brilliantly and Liverpool hardly created a serious chance up to the 90th minute, complete contrast today.
-
Salah looks offside for that second gol
-
Torres needs to wake up. Cash very erratic at the moment. Needs to calm his game down. Digne can’t get in the game. Bailey has been lovely since coming on. Watkins is off the pace. Centre midfield pair look frustrated.
A lot to do even just to stay in the game.
-
I feel we are going to miss Tyrone more and more and more as this season.
I’m guessing Digne has gone back to being shit because he’s not agging for a move now?
I worry that we will revert to a team that hold its own, but can’t complete with the ‘big boys’.
-
We've made it so easy for them. Not pressing their back line is funeraling us.
-
For the chance I just think Ollie was expecting Bailey to reach it first so simply wasn't set to strike it properly. It happens. Was another fantastic cross from Digne.
McGinn was the bigger miss, have to be getting it on target at least.
I'd definitely put that one down as a miss for Bailey rather than Watkins, as soon as Bailey went for it it became a really tough chance for Watkins.
-
We're too fucking slow. Slow to start, slow to move the ball & slow to close down.
-
I didn't think we would turn in another performance like that after Newcastle, despite the opposition.
We are getting caught so many times down the flanks with a simple lofted ball, and when we win the ball back, we've been too slow to move it on many occasions allowing them to swarm over us.
-
Fair play to Bingo. Had our number right from the start with their high press, from which their first goal came from. This is where I hope, in the future, Unai varies the tactics a bit and not always play out very slowly from the back.
The other ball that is killing us today is their long ball tactic which our defence doesn’t seem to have an answer to.
-
Thanks to everybody who sent me pms. Although my now deleted message was not actually a request but a cunningly crafted sentence which showed people where they could find one. ;-)
-
There's a reason they've lost once in the last 40 odd at home and you simply can't concede to them in first 10 minutes and expect a result.
Exactly this.
The one place that you need to keep the first twenty minutes tight is Anfield.
Pay’s defending has been atrocious, but the ball Martinez played to him for the first goal was suicidal with two Liverpool players bearing down on him. Martinez should of put his foot through it and cleared it up field.
-
Not sure about the decision to bring on Bailey tbh, we look outnumbered in the middle of the park and we need all the cover we can get. Bailey does not offer cover, or much else really
-
I feel we are going to miss Tyrone more and more and more as this season.
I’m guessing Digne has gone back to being shit because he’s not agging for a move now?
I worry that we will revert to a team that hold its own, but can’t complete with the ‘big boys’.
Chelsea away will be much easier than this, don't worry about that.
I think Liverpool will be Man. City's closest challengers in the league. They have flaws in defence and midfield but that attack is scary so can see why they want to hang onto Salah for 12 more months.
Bemusing why we've just decided to have no one within 5 yards of Macalister though. McGinn needs to be getting into him far more as he did when he played for Brighton.
-
Also - what's the point of Watkins if we're not pressing? We've got a stupidly high line without putting pressure on the ball. That might be the shape - they've overwhelmed us numerically in that area, so we stand off them worried that they'll go through us - but they just go over us anyway so what's the point? And what's the point of a physical, hard-working but technically insecure striker if we're just standing around doing nothing?
Not good enough. Need to make big changes.
-
High line but no press. Bizarre. Torres very very poor. Should have taken one of our chances.
-
This game has come too early in the season for us. The players and the new players haven’t settled in together yet. We still look a threat on the attack but are very vulnerable at the back. As good as he can be offensively, Digne has never been the best defensively and he doesn’t have Mings behind him to cover that - Torres can’t perform that role and Moreno will be the same position when he comes back. So we’re going to have to have a rethink about the set up for these bigger games because the left side of defence is really vulnerable without Mings.
Worry about Carlos. I hope he’s not another one we can’t rely on to stay fit.
-
This was always going to be a good indicator of where we are, and unfortunately it's miles behind.
-
Every time we got the ball they were on us like a shot and we Xiang seem to cope with that level of intensity. Looking forward to seeing what Unai does about this
-
Schmeichel giving
Peter Walton Dermot Gallagher pelters. Good lad.
-
Thanks to everybody who sent me pms. Although my now deleted message was not actually a request but a cunningly crafted sentence which showed people where they could find one. ;-)
Ha! Thought it was pretty clear!
-
This was always going to be a good indicator of where we are, and unfortunately it's miles behind.
Yep. Newcastle, we were in the game, we got overwhelmed but hey, could've gone in a few directions, strange game. Today's more of a test.
And we're not just losing. We're being funeralled.
-

Yup. Bailey fluffed it. Watkins was never going to get a shot off even if Bailey had left it for him.
-
Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
-
Not sure about the decision to bring on Bailey tbh, we look outnumbered in the middle of the park and we need all the cover we can get. Bailey does not offer cover, or much else really
I think Bailey's been o.k compared to his usual standard on the road. Had nice link up with Diaby for one of the chances and he's settled back quickly into shape when out of possession.
Logical move would've been to put Tielemans on but Unai obviously dosen't trust him to play more than 45 minutes v serious opposition yet.
Think Zaniolo will be on soon enough. Need to get him and Diaby drifting infront of their back 4 and see if we can cause them issues that way as if we get a goal back you never know.
-

Liverpool didn’t seem to have any problems with their new players
-
Bailey's been horrific.

Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
Are you thinking of Leeds?
-
Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
Erm.... we didn't did we?
-
Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
We didn’t, did we?
-
Diaby is our one shining light
Luiz and Konsa have been very good too. Cash and Digne have been ok. Kamara and Watkins anonymous, McGinn lost on left, not challenging TAA not giving Digne any support with Salah. Was a crazy sub by Emery and has unbalanced us horribly. Torres, worst individual performance I've seen from a Villa player in some time. Warning signs there in previous two games for me.
Might aswell hook Kamara on a yellow and get the Donk on for him. I'd also hook Watkins and get a good look at Duran. Chambers is horrid at LCB when played there previously, Lenglet just in the door and would be destroyed in that high line. One of them will have to come in for Torres though. Tactically I'm not sure what changes we can do with both Diaby and Bailey now on pitch. I guess 433 and try get at their full backs.
-
Thanks to everybody who sent me pms. Although my now deleted message was not actually a request but a cunningly crafted sentence which showed people where they could find one. ;-)
What with English being your second language it's no surprise.
-
Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
They were 5th
-
Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
No we didn't
-
Disappointing considering we finished above these last season.
Eh? They finished six points clear in the end.
Liverpool will be going for 2nd strongly, we can still finish top 6 regardless of today as we have enough in the squad to beat most of the bottom half home and away and that's as important as results v top sides.
-
We’ve been set up in the exact opposite way you’d expect against 3 really quick forwards. It’s not the first time. We’ll create more opportunities but we’ll concede even more.
-
Schmeichel giving Peter Walton Dermot Gallagher pelters. Good lad.
Should be giving our defence pelters. Been very poor
-
Not suprised by this, playing a high line against this mob was looking for trouble. That said if we had taken our chances we could have been level.
-
Let’s hope that wasn’t our good half.
-
Schmeichel giving Peter Walton Dermot Gallagher pelters. Good lad.
He has a good point as well. How many VAR people think from the goalkeepers view of the ball when deciding offside.
-
I think Liverpool will be top 2, so one of the very hardest games of the season. Bit I’d like us to give it more of a go.
-
Oh crap. I'm going for a walk.
-

Watkins should be busting his balls to get that cross. He should be kicking Bailey into the back of the net with the ball.

you’ll never walk alone.

This is my thinking, demolish anything in the way and make sure it goes in.

Decent save Alisson

They’re coming in to a more settled side generally.
-
Unbeaten in the last 125 times they've been leading at HT according the the commentary.
-
They've closed us down as we try to walk the ball out & hit the long ball behind our back line. Exactly the same as Newcastle.
You could pull any of that midfield.
-
Save from cash
-
Attempt on target
-
And nearly a 3rd
-
Watkins shit header
Miss from 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'
-
and then another long ball in behind to create a chance for them.
-
End to end.
-
When is Moreno back?
-
Mcginn off today
-
Mcginn out of the game.
-
McGinn back to his Gerrard form
-
Liverpool taking there foot off the gas now.
-
3-0, game over
-
Tackle the fucker ffs
-
Knew that would happen.
-
This has been pretty dismal.
-
We are just so sloppy. We look like a villa team of old.
-
Their 3rd

Why the fuck they let them get a corner , TAA should have been tackled by digne
-
Shameful actually
-
I think Liverpool will be top 2, so one of the very hardest games of the season. Bit I’d like us to give it more of a go.
we've gifted them the game. They've not needed to do anything for it. We've made it easy for them
-
I thought we might lose but we'd be competitive at least. Awful to see us so disjointed and idealess.
-
I despise Liverpool
Don't particularly like us when we play like this, either. Wankers
-
I hope he fucks off to saudi.
-
Absolutely wank defensively for the second time against a half decent side.
-
This performance shows that the Newcastle game was not an aberration.
-
Horrible.
-
No Mings = defensive shamballs
-
Kamara beaten far too easy for the header. He has been appalling today.
-
Watkins shite
-
Concerning that the only decent sides we've played this season have ripped us to shreds.
-
Picking up an injury every match we play isn’t helping
-
First time I've felt Unai has not got it right tactically by the sound of it. Very grim.
-
Last season, this was 1-1.
Disaster as we keep on picking up injuries and a massive reality check for us.
-
How is watkins still on the pitch
-
Hammered in our only two tough games. Bring on the relegation fodder.
-
On the radio at half time they were saying if Klop could design a team to play against it would be this Villa team
-
If you were playing a drinking game for every time the commentators mentioned Alexander-Arnold was their captain today you would be falling down incapable by now.
-
Let's throw all out eggs in the Conference basket.
-
This performance shows that the Newcastle game was not an aberration.
Hmmm, maybe losing our best defender in the Newcastle game, for the season, may have something to do with it?
-
Although Newcastle result clearly not a fluke
-
Without Mings, seems Cornalities are back for the opposition.
-
I'm far more concerned about our tactics and defense, again, than I am about Watkins.
-
Bringing Bailey on was a mistake.
Doubts starting to form.
-
How is watkins still on the pitch
Because we don’t really have anyone else we can bring on.
-
Its going to be a long season. Without Mings we have a bottom six standard Defence.
-
A rare away game that I didn't go to today. So bloody glad after watching this. As others have said I hoped these type of performances were behind us.
-
Hate the way the negativity creeps back in on here so quickly. We are away at Anfield without Mings with new players still bedding in.
-
Hate the way the negativity creeps back in on here so quickly. We are away at Anfield without Mings with new players still bedding in.
Agreed. We ought to be delighted.
-
Although Newcastle result clearly not a fluke
Second match where we have played a high line and midfield / forwards have not pressed. Look how much time they had for the pass for the own goal. He faked three passes. Could easily let in 5 again.
-
This performance shows that the Newcastle game was not an aberration.
Hmmm, maybe losing our best defender in the Newcastle game, for the season, may have something to do with it?
Maybe but it is what it is; the two games we’ve had against decent sides and we’ve been destroyed.
-
Bringing Bailey on was a mistake.
Doubts starting to form.
you been gunning for our best manager in 25 years since day one.
-
I'm far more concerned about our tactics and defense, again, than I am about Watkins.
Yep.
-
First time I've felt Unai has not got it right tactically by the sound of it. Very grim.
Newcastle the same, the Bailey change was insane
-
Concerning that the only decent sides we've played this season have ripped us to shreds.
That’s the worry
-
Hate the way the negativity creeps back in on here so quickly. We are away at Anfield without Mings with new players still bedding in.
I did expect better than this. But this is a bad day, at the worst place to have a bad day. Emery will make them suffer for this, I doubt we’ll see a performance this bad again for a while.
-
Unai Emery sitting down looking gutted.
-
Its going to be a long season. Without Mings we have a bottom six standard Defence.
Bit of an OTT post.
Have you seen the bottom six in the prem this season? Everton and Burnley are examples of bottom six defences.
-
Hate the way the negativity creeps back in on here so quickly. We are away at Anfield without Mings with new players still bedding in.
Yeah but we were all hoping we would be competing against these top 6 sides because that’s where we see ourselves
Not the case so far
-
The weekend after the first European Thursday night fixture... Bodes well.
-
Its going to be a long season. Without Mings we have a bottom six standard Defence.
Well this is just nonsense, what we have is a defence that struggles against express pace, being exposed by the quickest attack in the league.
-
This and Newcastle shows we are not able to go toe to toe with decent sides, at least away. I hope that from now on Emery sets us up way more defensive and spoiling in these away games and not so open. Better 0-0 than getting hammered.
-
Watkins makes gomez look like Alan Evans
-
Well if we can beat the poorer sides then at least relegation won’t be a worry. Woooo
-
Weak header McGinn.
-
Hate the way the negativity creeps back in on here so quickly. We are away at Anfield without Mings with new players still bedding in.
And Watkins still bedding in.

It's the nature of the defeats, we're absolutely miles off where we thought we were on the evidence so far
-
Zaniolo
-
Emery gets it right far more often than not, but when he gets it wrong it tends to be a bit of a car crash.
-
Bailey off
-
Bringing Bailey on was a mistake.
Doubts starting to form.
you been gunning for our best manager in 25 years since day one.
Bailey was a mistake, we needed someone to press the opposition and not give them time on the ball, Bailey is the exact opposite of that and has never showed much away and definitely against better opposition. Yet still always seems to be the go to man for some reason. Unai is great at some things, Bailey is not one of them unless it is a team we can dominate, and even then it is close.
-
Hate the way the negativity creeps back in on here so quickly. We are away at Anfield without Mings with new players still bedding in.
Yeah but we were all hoping we would be competing against these top 6 sides because that’s where we see ourselves

We'll give them a better game at VP I'm sure.
Anfield has simply been too much for someone like Pau Torres so he certainly needs to step up at other tough away grounds as season goes on.
Kamara also been really disappointing.
It's a bad day but we responded after Newcastle and I expect the same after the break. Beat Palace and get something v Chelsea and it will be at least 10 points from opening six and that's a solid start in anyone's book when we've had 4 away and just two at home.
-
Man Utd still finished third with a very iffy record against the top six.
I’m disappointed, with them signing a whole new midfield and Van Djik suspended I thought we’d at least give them a game.
-
Bailey off
Quite the statement.

I most certainly haven’t.
Bailey being taken off. Faith restored. Just a wobble.
-

Not affected Liverpool's new players. It wouldn't be so bad if it looked like we were prepared or even up for it. We've gotten them 3 point and they've not has to work for it. In fact they've been taking the piss.
-
Bailey off for Zaniolo. Ultimate 'you were shit' moment is a sub being subbed.
-
Somewhat dispiriting we have played two half decent sides so far (and tbh even one of those aren’t that good) and they have both torn us a new one.
-
Bailey ain't happy
Well stop being shit son
-
Its going to be a long season. Without Mings we have a bottom six standard Defence.

Spurs away last season was perfect away performance. Low blocked them to death first half and then showed more ambition second half and scored two decent goals so I think we'll see more of those type of performances as high line is just too risky without Mings.
-
Bailey ain't happy

Bit harsh on him though, he's been no shitter than most.

Since then we've won two prem games very convincingly and cruised through in europe.
Loads of teams finish at least top 6 getting drubbed at Anfield so in long term it's a result that dosen't hugely matter as long as lessons are learnt and we can't just rock up away at teams with rapid forwards and park our defence on the halfway line all game.
-

It shows that the high line is too dangerous against sides with loads of pace, especially if we give them time to look up and pick long balls over us.
That said 2 of the goals were from set pieces where we really need to be more solid.
-
Bailey ain't happy
Well stop being shit son
Don't think he was that bad when he came on...don't rate him either but had some decent moments today. Watkins for one has been miles worse
Was a dreadful tactical change by Emery to start with. Completely messed the shape of the team around when Carlos went off. Cost us any chance today.
-
The referee has just given us a throw in which a Liverpool player took so the ref then changed his mind!

No, the shape at the beginning was the problem. The personnel choice (Bailey) was the issue.

Starting to think we shouldn't play either Watkins or Duran. Start Diaby and Zaniolo up there.

Fuck was that Duran
-
Duran two shit finishes
And 2 more attempts than the fella he replaced
-
Poor shots from Duran but support players just jogging forward.

Duran looking like a pub player on a Sunday morning.
-
Why let Archer go and keep Duran. He is so raw. Not ready as a number 2. Very odd.

If he'd have waited 2 seconds the support was there
-
Starting to think we shouldn't play either Watkins or Duran. Start Diaby and Zaniolo up there.
I'd go with that
-
The worrying thing about this is that we have no answer to pace against our suicidal high line. It works when we're laying a lesser team as we have more of the ball, but it's been absolutely blown apart by both Newcastle and Liverpool. I really don't think we've got the personnel to make it successful against teams with pace, because Torres and Carlos are both extremely slow. Very concerning, Emery hasn't been able to change it at all twice now, and we've been absolutely battered out of sight both times. Liverpool could have had 8 today.
-
Is that now 1 goal for Watkins in the last 11 premier league games?

I don't get the Duran signing at all. If we hadn't paid good money for him he'd be considered miles behind the likes of Archer, Philogene and Kellyman.
-

He saw Watkins bringing in an apple every day for Unai so started doing the same.

Well this is just nonsense, what we have is a defence that struggles against express pace, being exposed by the quickest attack in the league.
And one thing you cannot get away with in the Premiership is a Defence that struggles against pace.
-
Klopp the moaning prick.
-
How long to go?
-
Is that now 1 goal for Watkins in the last 11 premier league games?
Archer 1 in 1 for Blades
-
Watching an air show over Leicestershire at my in-laws. Glad I didn’t bother watching this today.
-
It's like the players watch too much Sky Sports and don't believe we have a right to get anything there. They should stop socialising with referees.
-
Is that now 1 goal for Watkins in the last 11 premier league games?
I think you know that it is. Haha
It’s why we needed another striker.
-
Great to hear our fans still singing.
-
The worrying thing about this is that we have no answer to pace against our suicidal high line.
Yeah, he needs to get this sorted. It’s suicidal against teams like Liverpool who have been doing this a lot longer and better than us for years.
-
Disappointed with mcginn today , Watkins I don't think is good enough so not suprised but mcginn .
Wolves 3 1 down
-
There’s not a lot of positives we can take from this drubbing

There’s not a lot of positives we can take from this drubbing
we can beat poor teams

Club must have thought the money was too good to have turned down. Without bringing anyone else in we should have kept him.
-

Just a wake up call.
-
Harsh to blame the attack when the defence has gifted goals and left us with a mountain to climb.
-
Good move there
-
As others have said against better teams we have to modify shape and tactics. Not overhaul but a few noticeable tweaks
-
This really shows the benefits of a settled defence. And Mings.
-
Watching an air show over Leicestershire at my in-laws. Glad I didn’t bother watching this today.
Where's that
I.miight pop along
-
Great move but nobody thee to finish it.
-
McGinn just stopped running...good play from Diaby though.
-
I might be unpopular for saying it, but we’ve had performances and defending like this with Mings in the team.
I don’t think this is just because we are missing him.
-
Harsh to blame the attack when the defence has gifted goals and left us with a mountain to climb.
Yup. Especially v a top team
-
Two very difficult aways games and we lost our centre half in the first 20 minutes in both. That’s pretty tough.
-
Harsh to blame the attack when the defence has gifted goals and left us with a mountain to climb.
We've been miles off it in every single position bar keeper.
Hopefully we won't see this high line for a long while on the road. Can't be rocking up and playing it at Man. City or Arsenal anyway.
-
Great move but nobody thee to finish it.
Again nobody there.
-
Cosby, the Victory Show - the Red Arrows are due to fly over at 5:30 to close the show.
Quite a lot of people are in the park watching the display
-
I might be unpopular for saying it, but we’ve had performances and defending like this with Mings in the team.
I don’t think this is just because we are missing him.
Agreed. But generally I feel we’re a better team with him in the side. He’s a big loss.
Pau & Carlos are both practically new to this league and each other and it will take a little time especially against teams with the strength of attackers that these lot have.
-

I don’t think this is just because we are missing him.
I agree. It's a sum of the parts thing and if the people in front of him don't do their job, we get shat on.
-
Mind I haven't noticed lenglet which is a good thing
-
I’m taking Zaniololo as a small positive
-
Substitutes have done nothing
-
4 mins added time

Bringing Bailey on for Carlos made sense as the starting setup wasn’t working. So I don’t blame Emery for that, he needed to do something. Bailey could have done better, so Emery was right to bring him on.
Can’t blame Emery for all of that. Bailey isn’t good enough away from home.
-

Archer 1 in 1 for Blades
If cherry picking like this it is only fair to point out that Watkins has 40 in three premier league seasons which is a rate only Yorke and Benteke can beat in the past 30 years.
-

It's always the way. Missing players become legends when things don't go well. Earlier this week it was "who needs him"
-
Nice bit of shit housing from Duran

I like that stand and stare from Duran.

If Bailey isn’t good enough away from home, and Emery brings him on away from home, how come he can’t be blamed
-
Can anyone really justify why Duran is here and not Archer?
-
We’ve gone from a team that struggled against anyone, to a team that routinely beats sides we should. An injury list that’s got to be the worst in the league but still managing to win 2 of the first 4 with 3 being away.
There’s some justification for criticism about the high line but if anyone thought we’d be competing for the top 4 then this is your wake up call. We are 8th (I think), and if we finish 8th and win a trophy then I’ll be happy.
We still have that weak underbelly that shows itself from time to time but I’d like to bet it’ll be ironed out given time.
-

Watkins is a good player and provides a lot. But we know he can be streaky and we’ve had since January to find and bring in another option when he’s off it.

Their first clean sheet this season.
-
Emery is great, but he fucked up today. Hopefully he, and the players, learn from it.

I didn’t say he couldn’t be blamed. I said he couldn’t be blamed for all of that.
Bailey has to take some responsibility for his own performances too.
-
And that's that.
Sadness in my eyes.
-

I can imagine they’ll have hours and hours of going through this under the microscope.

Archer is worth £18 million. Duran not so much.

He’ll win us plenty of games with his tactics. But this is one that he lost from the outset.

Well said. We are only 6 games into what is going to be a long season. Lost to two very good sides, won the rest. I'll take that.

Watkins is the scapegoat when we're crap. You should know that by now. Watch the Ollie Watkins thread tonight.

The midfield battle was being lost and he brings on Bailey? Sorry, it was a shocking decision.
-
Never in it aside from a 5 minute spell before half time.
Reminded me of some of our mid 90s results v them, 3-0 used to be a common score in league and cup.
We go again v Palace and ultimately those games and getting wins from them define our season much more than today. That is the reality.

I think that’s probably the thinking man’s viewpoint. It’s still enough to be fucked off about!

1-0 down at the time and wide open all game up until then. We needed to tighten up.

Newcastle have been poor apart from one game.

Just think where we were 12 months ago. Massively underachieving under a fraud of a manager with some good players so that's what puts results like today into perspective.
-
Uni got it wrong all over the pitch today. Hopefully a couple back for Palace and injury to Costa not serious.
-
Can anyone really justify why Duran is here and not Archer?
Selling Archer raised £18m whereas selling Duran would probably register an FFP loss as it is highly unlikely we would get our money back at this stage let alone turn an £18m profit.
But no I wouldn't have sold Archer or purchased Duran.
