Kelkyman in the squad is interesting, seems Emery was as impressed as we were.

In Emery terms that strikes me as a cautious line-up - not necessarily defensive, just maybe a gameplan with a lot of focus on stopping the opposition.

Which is fair enough.

That's not a bad looking bench. Once Moreno and Ramsey are back we're going to look very strong.

From 2 keepers on the bench to 0 keepers on the bench (before anyone else says it 😂)

Probably, but is there anyone else to fill the bench?

From the Beeb

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking before the match against Liverpool, about Emiliano Martinez's return to the starting XI: "For us no.1 is Emiliano. Hopefully he can have the same performance we had last week with Olsen."

On Matty Cash playing right wing: "He was a winger when he was coming through at Nottingham. He played as a winger and we use him sometimes as a right-back but he can play as well as a winger. And Bailey played on Thursday. We have a lot of matches and we need to use every player and today is Cash."

On the test of coming to play Liverpool away: "Always Anfield is difficult and a big challenge. We want to play the matches at a high level and we are going to face one of the best teams in the Premier League. We want to try and impose our style and here I am very excited to watch us against them."

Gomez in for them. He probably still has nightmares about 7-2 and Ollie Watkins.

On paper, a decent Villa side and bench. Let's hope we do it on the pitch.

If it means that you want to avoid the match, I'm doing the same. I almost never watch this one. Hate them, hate Anfield, and everything connected to it/them. Commentary will be a sperm bank. Klopp and his shit tracksuit can fuck off.

Will still send you a stream if you want one, though 😂

I guess we'll soon find out if the Newcastle game was just a bad day at the office. Hopefully Watkins can find his PL shooting boots, he normally does well against this lot. If we can win the midfield battle we're in with a chance. Big test for Carlos and Torres. Time to really show what they're about.

Not sure where Pau was for that goal. This was the worry, it was hard to judge how good our defence would be after them not being tested against joke teams, we look all over the place here.

About 3 yards behind his man

Problem with Watkins in the end isn't even the finishing - it's the touch. Just doesn't have the instinctive technique and close control for this football. It's a shame, as I like him for so much of what he does, but just compare him to that child Ferguson yesterday...he just doesn't quite look like he belongs.

Liverpool at home have 1 defeat in 43 and won last 13 I think the commentator just said. So losing here isn't a disaster but we look hopeless at the back without Mings, just like we did last season when he didn't play.

It's not the losing, it's the manner in which we're doing it.

I agree, but we gave them a goal with a defensive mess and that pretty much set the tone. Then lost yet another player to injury. I'm trying to look on the bright side, but it's difficult!

Correct on all counts.

Need a massive performance in the 2nd half to salvage some dignity, at the very least. I said before that I'd take a last ditch draw if it was us coming from behind to nick a point, so that's still on, maybe.

We've been complete s*** tbh.

My big fear pre match was no Mings for this type of occasion and it's been a game to forget for Pau so far to put it mildly.

At least we strung together a few decent moves end of the half but Liverpool could easily score 3 or 4 here.

There's a reason they've lost once in the last 40 odd at home and you simply can't concede to them in first 10 minutes and expect a result.

Extremely poor from everyone - including (not often you say this) Emery. The starting lineup is wrong, the shape was wrong (completely overrun in midfield), and when he went to correct it thanks to the injury he brought on a player so utterly useless you wonder if he's been bribed.

Stop trusting those who don't deserve it, Unai. They were horrible against Newcastle and they're horrible again today. You don't owe them shit.

Man. United lost 7-0 at this venue last year.

I think at places like Anfield you can talk about technical quality all you like but who's actually talking in that backline as Pau certainly isn't and Konsa has never been that talkative at CB.

End of last season Mings marshalled the backline brilliantly and Liverpool hardly created a serious chance up to the 90th minute, complete contrast today.

I didn't think we would turn in another performance like that after Newcastle, despite the opposition.

We are getting caught so many times down the flanks with a simple lofted ball, and when we win the ball back, we've been too slow to move it on many occasions allowing them to swarm over us.

Fair play to Bingo. Had our number right from the start with their high press, from which their first goal came from. This is where I hope, in the future, Unai varies the tactics a bit and not always play out very slowly from the back.
The other ball that is killing us today is their long ball tactic which our defence doesn’t seem to have an answer to.

The one place that you need to keep the first twenty minutes tight is Anfield.

Chelsea away will be much easier than this, don't worry about that.

I think Liverpool will be Man. City's closest challengers in the league. They have flaws in defence and midfield but that attack is scary so can see why they want to hang onto Salah for 12 more months.

Bemusing why we've just decided to have no one within 5 yards of Macalister though. McGinn needs to be getting into him far more as he did when he played for Brighton.

Also - what's the point of Watkins if we're not pressing? We've got a stupidly high line without putting pressure on the ball. That might be the shape - they've overwhelmed us numerically in that area, so we stand off them worried that they'll go through us - but they just go over us anyway so what's the point? And what's the point of a physical, hard-working but technically insecure striker if we're just standing around doing nothing?

Not good enough. Need to make big changes.

This game has come too early in the season for us. The players and the new players haven’t settled in together yet. We still look a threat on the attack but are very vulnerable at the back. As good as he can be offensively, Digne has never been the best defensively and he doesn’t have Mings behind him to cover that - Torres can’t perform that role and Moreno will be the same position when he comes back. So we’re going to have to have a rethink about the set up for these bigger games because the left side of defence is really vulnerable without Mings.

I think Bailey's been o.k compared to his usual standard on the road. Had nice link up with Diaby for one of the chances and he's settled back quickly into shape when out of possession.

Logical move would've been to put Tielemans on but Unai obviously dosen't trust him to play more than 45 minutes v serious opposition yet.

Think Zaniolo will be on soon enough. Need to get him and Diaby drifting infront of their back 4 and see if we can cause them issues that way as if we get a goal back you never know.

Diaby is our one shining light

Luiz and Konsa have been very good too. Cash and Digne have been ok. Kamara and Watkins anonymous, McGinn lost on left, not challenging TAA not giving Digne any support with Salah. Was a crazy sub by Emery and has unbalanced us horribly. Torres, worst individual performance I've seen from a Villa player in some time. Warning signs there in previous two games for me.

Might aswell hook Kamara on a yellow and get the Donk on for him. I'd also hook Watkins and get a good look at Duran. Chambers is horrid at LCB when played there previously, Lenglet just in the door and would be destroyed in that high line. One of them will have to come in for Torres though. Tactically I'm not sure what changes we can do with both Diaby and Bailey now on pitch. I guess 433 and try get at their full backs.

Bailey was a mistake, we needed someone to press the opposition and not give them time on the ball, Bailey is the exact opposite of that and has never showed much away and definitely against better opposition. Yet still always seems to be the go to man for some reason. Unai is great at some things, Bailey is not one of them unless it is a team we can dominate, and even then it is close.

We'll give them a better game at VP I'm sure.

Anfield has simply been too much for someone like Pau Torres so he certainly needs to step up at other tough away grounds as season goes on.

Kamara also been really disappointing.

It's a bad day but we responded after Newcastle and I expect the same after the break. Beat Palace and get something v Chelsea and it will be at least 10 points from opening six and that's a solid start in anyone's book when we've had 4 away and just two at home.

Spurs away last season was perfect away performance. Low blocked them to death first half and then showed more ambition second half and scored two decent goals so I think we'll see more of those type of performances as high line is just too risky without Mings.

Since then we've won two prem games very convincingly and cruised through in europe.

Loads of teams finish at least top 6 getting drubbed at Anfield so in long term it's a result that dosen't hugely matter as long as lessons are learnt and we can't just rock up away at teams with rapid forwards and park our defence on the halfway line all game.

It shows that the high line is too dangerous against sides with loads of pace, especially if we give them time to look up and pick long balls over us.

That said 2 of the goals were from set pieces where we really need to be more solid.

The worrying thing about this is that we have no answer to pace against our suicidal high line. It works when we're laying a lesser team as we have more of the ball, but it's been absolutely blown apart by both Newcastle and Liverpool. I really don't think we've got the personnel to make it successful against teams with pace, because Torres and Carlos are both extremely slow. Very concerning, Emery hasn't been able to change it at all twice now, and we've been absolutely battered out of sight both times. Liverpool could have had 8 today.

Its going to be a long season. Without Mings we have a bottom six standard Defence.

Well this is just nonsense, what we have is a defence that struggles against express pace, being exposed by the quickest attack in the league.
And one thing you cannot get away with in the Premiership is a Defence that struggles against pace.

We’ve gone from a team that struggled against anyone, to a team that routinely beats sides we should. An injury list that’s got to be the worst in the league but still managing to win 2 of the first 4 with 3 being away.
There’s some justification for criticism about the high line but if anyone thought we’d be competing for the top 4 then this is your wake up call. We are 8th (I think), and if we finish 8th and win a trophy then I’ll be happy.

Never in it aside from a 5 minute spell before half time.

Reminded me of some of our mid 90s results v them, 3-0 used to be a common score in league and cup.

We go again v Palace and ultimately those games and getting wins from them define our season much more than today. That is the reality.

1-0 down at the time and wide open all game up until then. We needed to tighten up.

We still have that weak underbelly that shows itself from time to time but I’d like to bet it’ll be ironed out given time.

Well said.  We are only 6 games into what is going to be a long season.  Lost to two very good sides, won the rest.  I'll take that.
Newcastle have been poor apart from one game.

I think that’s probably the thinking man’s viewpoint. It’s still enough to be fucked off about!

Just think where we were 12 months ago. Massively underachieving under a fraud of a manager with some good players so that's what puts results like today into perspective.

Uni got it wrong all over the pitch today. Hopefully a couple back for Palace and injury to Costa not serious.

Can anyone really justify why Duran is here and not Archer?

Selling Archer raised £18m whereas selling Duran would probably register an FFP loss as it is highly unlikely we would get our money back at this stage let alone turn an £18m profit.

But no I wouldn't have sold Archer or purchased Duran.

Bringing Bailey on for Carlos made sense as the starting setup wasn’t working. So I don’t blame Emery for that, he needed to do something. Bailey could have done better, so Emery was right to bring him on.

Can’t blame Emery for all of that. Bailey isn’t good enough away from home.

Can blame him for the obviously poor tactics though, right?

He’ll win us plenty of games with his tactics. But this is one that he lost from the outset.
can hardly blame the chairman….
