Title: Aston Villa vs Burnley pre match thread POSTPONED
Post by: Smirker on December 16, 2021, 09:36:23 AM
Saturday 18th December, kick off 3pm.

This is one of those games where after we go on a good run, and we're all feeling positive, we have what is on paper a winnable game and I get excited for it, only for it to end in disappointment (Leeds last season at home was another). A win here would take us to five wins from seven, that's top 6 form.

Hopefully complacency doesn't set in. 1-0 would be excellent.

Win by one goal, FTF.

Think Burnley's league position is a bit misleading, and think they'll pull out of the relegation scrap soon-ish.  Expecting a tough game, but ultimately we're in pretty good form right now & I think the way we're playing under Steven Gerrard will make us much more resilient against sides like Burnley.

Us 2-0 Them.

Another win and Stevie G will match John Gregory's record for best start as manager. It's be a different challenge and they'll be more "robust" than Norwich I expect.

3-0, and Mee gets scissor tackled by Mings and Konsa together, one on each leg.

Burnley are a horrible outfit. I'd love to see them relegated with their anti-football tactics. Expect them to sit deep and try and frustrate us. I can see us winning by the odd goal, so 1-0. As for Ben Mee, he deserves the 'Schmeichel' treatment after that disgraceful tackle on Wesley.

I hope we smash the cloggers.

But what team we can put out come Saturday is anyones guess if Covid strikes again.

Assuming Buendia will miss out (he looked like he was really struggling on Tuesday) and possibly Young too (minutes and a knock) then with no more issues it's still a decent 11.  Any more injuries or suspensions and we're down to bare bones for Chelsea though.

             Martinez
Cash   Konsa   Mings    Targett
   McGinn   Luiz    Ramsey
    Chuk     Ings   Watkins

Still with Bidace, Cam and Trez in support up front, but no back up for midfield really.

Greggers managed 9 wins out of his first 11 league games (and the two defeats were to relegated teams, not the top two in the country!) plus a home win against Atleti in a VP atmosphere that has never since been matched. He set a high bar, Mr Gerrard still has a way to go.

I've no doubt Burnley will be studying videos of our matches to see if they can find the spot Buendia has been kicked on so they can do it again.

Chukwuemeka's physical presence would be good for this. I reckon Ings too.

2-0 Ings, McGinn

Have this down as a home win but Burnley are spoilers and are more than capable of getting a draw if they drag us into that sort of battle. Nakamba getting crocked doesn't help but still going for a home win 1-0*

*provided we don't lose another couple of players to COVID

They've one win all season, and are goalless from their last three games. If we've aspirations of a higher finish, we need to be beating a bottom three side at home, however agricultural they might be. If we can put out close to a first choice midfield, I think we'll run them ragged.

Bit of a pain in the backside opposition since we came back up but I think we're playing well enough to win this comfortably.

Think I'd bring back Ings for this and try him in inside forward role as Ollie is scoring at decent rate so would keep him as CF.

3-1 win. Despite the current circumstances I'd urge anyone going to enjoy it as not sure the Chelsea match will happen with the cases rising and could easily be significant restrictions on attending sporting events in January/Feb.

I was hoping for a cracking pre Christmas day out but the spectre of Omnicron has blunted that feeling.
As for the game, should it go ahead, I can see an attritional battle but would hope we can rise above it. We're in a better position to go up against the likes of Burnley with this manager so I think we will prevail.

2-0

I'd imagine the problem would be our end rather than Burnley's. Depends if we've got an outbreak. Moyes I think commented the problem is youth players coming into the bubble so seeing we have a lot of youth players involved...….. 60-40 for going ahead based on nothing really

Unfortunately it seems impossible to predict as the criteria for postponement seem to vary from club to club. There has been no indication of it being at risk but if it was me I’d be leaving it as late as possible before committing.

Have played these shithouses 8 times in Premiership

Home - W 1 D 2 L 1

Away  - W 1 D 2 L 1

So not a formality to win by any means but they do seem a bit shitterer this season and i fancy them to actually drop

A very bruising 1-0 with a scrappy Konsa goal

I think you may have done Wimbledon a disservice there. I think we only beat them 7-1 . Also I think the Wimbledon game just before Christmas was something like 5-0 and the 7-1 game came afterwards, possibly the following season.

So did San Marino, with the fastest international goal ever at the time. Sir Graham's last stand before his humiliating reign was terminated.

From Sky Sports:
Five Premier League games due to take place this weekend have been postponed because of Covid-19 outbreaks.
Following the announcement on Thursday morning that Manchester United's game against Brighton on Saturday was off, the Premier League later confirmed four more fixtures would be postponed:    It now means five of the 10 matches scheduled for the weekend have been scratched from the schedule with the only games set to take place on Saturday now being Aston Villa's home game against Burnley and Leeds vs Arsenal.

Mostly for El Ghazi on his left foot.

Filling in the form was easy enough. At least it says that it's submitted. Getting to the Covid pass on the NHS app was a different matter as I lost my phone charger. All sorted now. DON'T FORGET YOUR COVID PASS. It said on the email that you can't get in without it, or a negative test result from the app.

I got an api error when I submitted mine. Now the link says the form has been submitted.

Any ideas?
Filling in the form was easy enough. At least it says that it's submitted. Getting to the Covid pass on the NHS app was a different matter as I lost my phone charger. All sorted now. DON'T FORGET YOUR COVID PASS. It said on the email that you can't get in without it, or a negative test result from the app.

Not sure what I can do. I haven't got any photo ID (no passport, and my driving licence has expired) and therefore can't complete the application for a Covid pass. I've telephoned the NHS and they are sending a letter (by post) that should arrive within 3-5 working days. Clearly I can't go tomorrow, as they obviously won't accept the cards with the confirmation of double-vaccination on them. I just hope the letter turns up for Boxing Day.....

You don't need a photo though do you? I've not uploaded one to mine and I've used my pass over here and in Ireland.

To get a Covid Pass you need photo ID - I telephoned 119 and they confirmed this - they said that all they could do was post a letter to confirm my status (once they'd checked my vaccination history) but weren't able to email this.....

I didn’t. Just downloaded a pass from the NHS app. Saved in apple wallet. Jobs a good ‘un. I’ll be getting there earlier than usual though as I’m anticipating delays getting in.

Horrible, scrappy, niggly game if Burnley get their way.

If we play as we did against Norwich though we'll be too good for them.

2-0 to us.

Cornet is doubtful, apparently. Hamstring injury.

From the Guardian, our injury list is as follows: Traoré (hamstring, Jan), Bailey (hamstring, unknown), Nakamba (knee, unknown), Sanson (Covid-19), Steer (Covid-19), El Ghazi (Covid-19)

A shambles to let it get this close to kick off.

Letting down a lot of people. Pathetic.
pretty much everybody has already set off and therefore increasing the risk of catching it.
So they have unnecessarily  put people at risk.

Day four of isolating with COVID and I am climbing the walls. Finding a dodgy stream to watch the game was going to be the highlight of today.

Could more be done to protect outbreaks at clubs inc educating players on the value of vaccines and quicker test turnarounds?

They test the players the day before the game & don’t get the results until the morning of the game. So if they get more positive results I don’t see how they could tell us earlier.

It’s probably for the best.
you would think a multi million pound business has the capability of getting tests turned around quicker than this.

Yep I it was within 3hrs PCR (obv on-site labs) that stopped me travelling 72hrs in advance, but presumably it might have been PCR tests swabbed first thing today.

Be interested to know WHEN we got the test results. Did it take 4 hours for the Premier League to approve a requested postponement? It's diabolical really. Whether its a delay from the club or getting a response from PL to postpone you should  have a longer window to warn people against travelling. If that's not possible because of the time needed for tests then a club that already has confirmed cases should postpone 24 hours before.

Multiple players/staff managing to catch it in a group of 20-30 max, with regular testing/protocols in place.

Imagine the uptake in contractions after 42k fans mingling at Villa Park for 2-3 hrs, rubbing shoulder to shoulder. It was negligence of the highest order not to foresee this and call the game off during  midweek. There’s a lot of ill feeling towards the club/league and wasted time/expense on the part of fans as a result.

The UK saw a rapidly climbing 93,000 confirmed cases yesterday (*almost certainly a tonne more than this in reality). Once again, the Premier League putting money before the fans.

Gutted for the fans who have been put out by this, but a bit of common sense by Villa and the Premier League and it could have all been avoided. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Club's fault for not issuing a statement at the time that they submitted a request for postponement. That would given Burnley and our far away supporters time to make a decision about travelling.

Yes, that might have helped but if the league had said no then people would be doubly pissed off if they’d cancelled travel arrangements only for the game to go ahead.

Clubs should not have been put in this position in the first place.

It's not an appeal it's a request based on good authoritative  data and responsibly stating that the Villa do not have enough players to field a team. No request made by clubs on actual match days have been rejected so far.

Can see people not bothering for a while whilst this shit is going on.
I didn't travel down this morning because I didn't want to risk having to isolate over the family Christmas. Had I done so, I'd have been there before the official announcement (260 miles round trip).

Apparently it's 4 more Villa players ?
they should have been more careful to be honest.

Surely we should be staying in a hotel night before game with players in separate rooms?

Would be disappointing if players were with families overnight, caught the virus from family and tested positive this morning I presume getting to Bodymoor around 9am.

In terms of "hardship" it's not too much to ask given we always spend away matches at hotels and didn't have any additional cases before Norwich game.

Only travelling in from Sutton so feel for those who were coming in from various parts of u.k to watch today, said a few days they really should've called this off Friday evening or Saturday morning at latest, 12.45pm really isn't good enough when people are starting to set off so need to improve testing procedure for sure if it can't be done quicker.

I'd be surprised if we played again this year tbh. Think next time we'll play is the Monday night in the FA cup unless premier league put a new midweek round for Jan 5th if plenty of xmas games get wiped out as looks pretty certain currently.

The club will have notified the PL at the earliest opportunity. In all honesty it was bordering on criminal that the game was taking place with 40k people & cases at the level they are.

Games will restart on 8th January & I don't think fans will be there or if they are it will be a reduced capacity.

Is the premier league board still full of old men who don't get up early (given Ellis was on it for years).

Two hours between us informing the prem there was issue with today and then them only starting to form a decision which took another 40 minutes?

Decision reached by half 11 wouldn't have stopped everyone leaving the house but at least the Burnley fans wouldn't have been that far down the M6 rather than about to park up in Witton when they were told to turn back.

Think telling anyone not jabbed at all to spend night before home game in hotel away from family is worth considering (jabbed players can spend it at home). That would be one incentive perhaps as I assume some of the ones who tested positive from Friday-Saturday were probably innocently playing with their kids and picked it up from them.

Certainly would be expecting whoever is in the squad who have been double vaxxed to be getting their boosters this week, would have no issue if that's deemed queue jumping.

Fell so sorry for you Richard, I was over halfway here when I found out and I live much closer than you. Safe journey back.Abdolute shit show from our so-called 'well run' club. They send out countless communications about illegal domestic Covid passports, yet not one single email or text notifying of the postponement.

Anyone up for a class action to claim compensation on travelling expenses?

1322 email, yet I reckon 1247 alert to phone from Villa app, no text yet, apart from the 10.01 don’t travel if symptoms…

Yep, text at 10am to say not to attend with symptoms, but no text to say that the game was off.

I’d just picked up a sarnie in Perry Bar and was walking back to my car when I had a message off a mate to say it was off.

Anyone who tested positive yesterday (for this morning’s results) was likely exposed at LEAST 48 hours earlier, more likely no later than Tuesday - you simply don’t become contagious that quickly. I’d imagine if we’ve got a few more players gone down today, there will be more test positive before it gets better (unless we’ve been doing distanced no contact training all week?)

Yes I think that’s correct.

I was going today but deep down I wasn’t feeling it at all.
With the way this variant is spreading (mild or not) I think all of this weekends games should have been called off.

Scandalous from the Premier League. As soon as the Burnley Watford game was cancelled at short notice, they should have realised it was possible/likely that the same would happen to all games. If players were awaiting PCR results from Friday this was always a strong likelihood. Fucking twats, people have wasted all sorts of money this close to Christmas.

Villa can put all the safeguards they like in place, but the players then go home and make contact with their families (who could have been in contact with any Tom, dick or Harry), or the younger less tied down players such as Dougie or Leon, off out partying with their extended group of ‘friends’ - As an example, Sanson had posted pics of a family trip to Disneyland Paris recently. Is that really a wise thing to do mid-season in the middle of an upturn of a pandemic?

I’m not saying they have to live like nuns, but they are paid handsome amounts to stay as fit and healthy as possible, to enable them to be called upon for matchdays. They, above all people should be keeping as low a profile as possible to minimise transmission. They need to shoulder some of the blame in all of this too imo.

However, that aside, fan safety should be the paramount priority in all of this, and 42k in a packed out villa park when there were 92k confirmed cases the previous day (and climbing) shows utter negligence towards the fan base imo. Fans would turn up to support the team no matter what, and the league is playing with this devotion, irrespective of the covid situation. They should be taking the decision out of fans hands to keep everyone safe (ie. Not just the fans who decide to turn up regardless of the risk, but the people they would make contact with over the coming days post-match).

I think it’s done till FA Cup third round now. And rightly so imo.

I guess that the only way to ensure safety is to test everyone (including the players) before they enter the ground. It would be a pain but at least the matches could go ahead. Nobody carrying the virus, vaccinated or not, would be allowed to enter. There would be depleted teams but football would go ahead and maybe some of the younger players would get a chance.

It's a tricky one.

Obviously all the data shows double vaxxed + booster means very little chance of ending up in hospital with severe illness. No vaccination at all and picking up virus and passing it on could endanger the individual significantly more and anyone in their inner circle not vaxxed either.

Will have to make a judgement call I think once the data comes through of how significant the variant is at putting people into hospital otherwise you might aswell just call the season off as unrealistic to think January won't be disrupted given variant will still be sweeping through the U.K.

If this bugger of a virus can ever morph into a cold like virus then it's not a problem at all and football can just continue as normal. Long way off that I suspect.

One thing I would like to see be published by the premier league is a list by club how many players are unvaccinated

This in my view could help determine if a game should be called off …. For instance if the majority are not vaccinated then under 23s should make up a team

I have no idea what our situation is but since we were hit last season as well it makes me wonder

Yep its a red herring in terms of the game being called off. I got the virus back in late August 8 weeks after my 2nd jab. Obviously getting vaccinated is really important and i do think whether they like it or not, these role models not getting vaccinated in fairly big numbers is irresponsible. But its conflating two issues blaming the covid rates amongst footballers to vaccination rates.
I was proper rough for a week when i had it and still cant smell nearly 3 months later, but God knows where i would of ended up without the jabs.

I think unvaccinated players in the PL should be made to play in traditional Dutch wooden clogs until they get doubled vaxed and boostered.

That'd soon change their minds.

Match of the Day commentator Jonathan Pearce, speaking on Football Focus

In my opinion, the league missed out on an opportunity. If they had called every game off from Wednesday night onwards, it would have given a 10-day isolation period before the Boxing Day matches.

I preferred the bit where he sympathised with the fans the gist of which was 'not just those from Burnley and Birmingham but fans who travel from all around the World to watch football in this wonderful Theatre".

I'd imagine that caused a few expletives to be uttered by those viewing in Small Heath. :D
Pearce seems to like us.
Believe he was a student at Birmingham Uni and watched Villa in our league winning 1981 season.

Was best mates with one of my best mates.  Top man. Some years ago we went to Charlton on  a monday night. He said I will meet you in the bar afterwards as he was commentating with Tony Gayle. We rocked up after the game and the doorman said no chance. Pearce or Pint as we called him rocked up and said they are with us and in we went.

I'm sure I watched an England game a few years back where Jonathan Pearce noted the opposition keeper bearing some resemblance to the ventriloquist Roger de Courcey. He referenced this a few times during the commentary, by the latter stages of the game simply calling said keeper De Courcey. I can't remember the opposition, I can picture the keeper (he did bear a striking resemblance to the owner of Nookie Bear) and I'm sure I didn't dream this happening.

I loved that UEFA cup run. If only Hendrie had scored or laid off the chance to Milosevic in the home game against Athletico Madrid. Still love the run. That Collymore power drive against Madrid from distance is still one of my favourite Villa goals.

There's a national shortage of lateral flow test kits

My first Christmas as a father I thought I'd start as I meant to go on and bail on the inlaws visit.

I started walking down to the match that afternoon and got as far as the Yew Tree before someone told me the game was off. I had a quick pint and walked home, my new wife cried and thought I'd been teasing her, quite rightly I got treated like a king for 'putting my family before the Villa" that day......

Until her big mouthed uncle arrived.

Ok fair enough but I think the suggestion that everyone takes a lateral flow test prior to entering the stadium is a non starter. 40,000 people waiting for the result would cause mayhem.

No worries, apologies, didn’t mean to sound pedantic or know all, it’s just that we’ve unfortunately had to become experts on these bloody tests recently. One adult son tested positive ( with both tests) and is now holed up in his flat feeling crappy on his 32nd birthday, another one coughing his guts up in his room in our house ( he had to move back in when his relationship broke up). He’s a teacher and god knows how he hasn’t had it yet , most of his classes and colleagues have. Despite having negative LFTs he was so ill yesterday we decided not to go to the match before it was cancelled anyway and he drove to the centre to get a PCR. We are now awaiting the result and bricking it. Our 3rd son miraculously didn’t get it when all of the rest of his small company of 6 did , so he’s been doing LFTs twice daily and voluntarily self isolating until recently. And we are now not sure if it’s safe for our fourth son and his wife to come up from London at Christmas.

Cheers , you too. Hope your wife is feeling fully better now.
Yeah she's fine now mate.

I can remember getting to Villa Park on Boxing Day 1995 and the game was postponed. It was the last season before under soil heating was installed and the pitch was terrible.
Liverpool at home. I went. Then went home

I remember Man City was cancelled 1993-94 too. I have programs for both the original game and the rescheduled match. Both had the same cover.

Funnily enough I was trying to find a game that was postponed around 94/95 today other day due to heavy snow. I had it in my mind it was against Southampton. That ring a bell with anybody?

I too suffered that Boxing Day cancellation v Man City. I was taking my 4-5 year old nephew and my sister dropped us off. Got to the ground to discover the game was off so went to the club shop to console him - and gain time as there was no transport that day. We then went to the car park and saw the players driving off. I had forgotten this but Yorke was driving out and he wound his windows down to sign autographs. My nephew was starstruck but silent and I said “go on, say hello” to which Yorke blurted a sheepish hello.

Re yesterday I only discovered the game was off just as I got to New street. A pain, but I know a few people who had to bail out yesterday because of positive tests or not wanting to potentially ruin Christmas and felt the game wasn’t certain to go ahead. However I really think there should be a cut off point for cancellations to reduce fans being inconvenienced, say 5 hours before kick off, more where the away fans would have a longer journey.

I had a stroll around Digbeth and the German market then jumped on a train back to London. Brum was pretty busy, but less than I expected. Mask wearing in the station was lower than I would have thought by the way.

Seem to recall a midweek game away to Brighton when we got to that London at about 11.30,left the pub at something past 3.00  and only found out the game was off when we stopped at a cafe just outside Brighton at about 5pm.We carried on to the seaside for a drink and were pleased to find quite a few Villa had done the same.Think the game had been called off aound lunchtime.

Edge, the lateral flow test is the one you do at home where you get a result in between 15 -30 minutes. You may be thinking of the PCR which is the one where you have to wait for the result to come back from the Lab.
That's the one lol
Sod Covid!

Me my Dad and brother all got it in September. Neither my wife or kids, my mum or my brothers flatmate did though. A colleague has had it, then his daughter and much later his son. His wife has never had it at all. Cast iron immune systems!

Great result yesterday. Some lovely movement. Cracking goals in each half by SJM who is revelling in his role under Gerrard and what a good player JJ is becoming. Defence is once again really solid. Oh and fuck off Sean Dyche. You were soundly beaten. Gerrard is proving us all wrong. 5 wins out of 7 is a brilliant return.

We got as far as Newport Pagnall and someone drove past holding up a sheet of A4 with 'Game Off' scrawled on it.

The first half - I know about Archer's stunner, Mings's header and that last minute one off the corner by Emi 1.
